Auction for Will Sanders

Will Sanders is a local teenager who is currently dealing with what is considered a mysterious and unknown disease that has called deterioration of his nervous system, causing atrophy of the muscles and   inflammation in the white matter in his brain, which effects the brain’s ability to receive and transmit messages. Currently, he is on the undiagnosed diseases list at National Institutes of Health.  Instead of letting this major disease which could be deadly get the best of him, he finished out high school where for many years, his teachers and students had no idea that he was suffering.

Recently, Will’s doctors advised his mother that it was time to seek power of attorney and to experience as much life as he can. Upon hearing this, Will’s mother wanted to give her son a summer he wouldn’t forget by purchasing an RV and traveling the United States.

We want to help make this happen for this brave young man and his family.

Author Micalea Smeltzer has been kind enough to set up a fundraiser to help reach their $30,000 by hosting an auction. I’ve donated signed copies, sometimes two, of all of my books that you can bid on by visiting the links below. There are also foreign copies in the auction for those who’d liked to try to win signed copies from different countries.

All the information about the auction can be found HERE

You can read more about Will Sanders HERE and HERE

Getting to Know Tsk, Tsk, What to Read

It’s getting to know you time!

But first, last week’s winner of a digital copy of Me Before You is Katie Ferra! Congrats. Please email your address to jenniferlarmentrout@live.com using the subject line “Me Before You”

Blogger of the Week:

Tsk, Tsk, What to Read

What country are you in?

United States

How long have they’ve been blogging and rolling?

Almost 2 years

Q1. Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging because I love to read and really wanted to be able to share my thoughts with other readers. Being able to discuss and share our love for books and the authors that write them….

Q2. Do you do weekly memes and if so, what is your favorite meme and why?

Not really…. There are some great ones out there and am considering doing the Teaser Tuesday one… ;)

(Teaser Tuesdays are fun!)

Q3. What is your favorite aspect about blogging?

My favorite aspect of blogging would probably being a part of such a fabulous community of people. Sharing ideas and thoughts and of course out love for reading!!!

Q4. If you can be stuck on an island with any author, who would it be and why?

OMG… This is like the hardest question to answer.. There are so many!!!

Ahhhhh!!!!!

Ok. Michelle Leighton… And because she would make being on an island in the middle of nowhere absolutely the most comical and best time… And I think we would have kidnapped A.m. Hargrove somehow so she would have to be there too… LOL!!!

I might have disqualified myself with this…

(Hmm… methinks you might have done a wee bit planning on this before)

Q5. What book would you give up your left arm and maybe even a leg to see it translated into film or TV? Tell us why!

Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost..

Fabulous characters and storyline that would be phenomenal on screen

(OMG. Me too!)

Q6. What is your favorite question to ask an author and why?

My favorite question to ask an author is what do they like to do for fun in their spare time… I think this gives us a chance to see them in a different light and not just as someone sitting at a computer typing away…

(I think we pretty much sit at the computer typing away all day)

Q7. What TV show is a not-miss for you?

Well right now it’s FACEOFF on syfy…

Season is ending this week though…

I love watching the imaginations and the creations of the make up artists. They are so talented, it just blows me away to see what they can do in such a short amount of time…

(Can we be friends? Faceoff is one of my favorite shows. I’m amazed and blown away by what they do)

Q8. What is your favorite movie that you can watch over and over again?

Ahhhh… So hard…

My favorite movie that I can watch over and over… Ugh… So many…

But to choose one…

Star Wars series

(Star Wars brings the smiley face)

Q9. Are you a cat, dog, fish, or gerbil person?

Definitely a dog person but I love all animals..

Q10. Do you prefer print or digital?

I prefer print… Even if I get the book in digital I will ultimately buy it in print…

Q11. What is your favorite genre to read and why?

My favorite genre to read is paranormal…

I love the underworld stories and vampires are just my fave

Q12. What would you like to read more about?

I also love dystopian novels and really do wish there were more of those out there. I know there are several great ones but I’d like to see some in the more mature young adult area too

Finally, what is your favorite book of all time and why?

Man… You don’t let up on the hard questions…

I have way too many..

But a book that I always recommend and an author I absolutely adore would be ON DUBLIN STREET by Samantha Young

Today you have a chance to win a digital copy of On Dublin Street. You know the drill. Entry below.

Lux Series news

I have super exciting news to share with you guys today. As you remember, I’ve hinted toward such news earlier, and here is one of the announcements.

I know that a lot of the Lux series readers have contacted Entangled Teen and me, expressing their disappointment and concern about having a hard time locating the first books in the Lux Series in their local bookstores and libraries.  It’s something that everyone has been working on for months to not only get Lux Series into every store but to broaden the audience, which is hugely important with an Obsidian movie in the works. So I’m really pleased to let you guys in on what’s been going on in the background to make this happen…

On June 3, 2014, special collector’s editions of the Lux Series will be released and shelved.  So some of you might be wondering what does a special collector’s edition mean?

Firstly, you don’t get just one book on June 3rd, but you get TWO books on June 3rd. There will be two volumes releasing that day.

Lux Series Volume 1 (Obsidian and Onyx)

Lux Series Volume 2  (Opal and Origin)

You can actually pre-order Volume 1 right now, as it’s already up on Amazon by clicking HERE, and you’re going to want these special editions.  And here’s why.

Volume 1 will have not one but TWO never seen before, original material that was cut from Obsidian and Onyx, featuring Katy and Daemon.

Volume 2 will have two Daemon POVs. You’ll get that very special chapter of Opal in his POV. You know, a certain smexy scene from Chapter 33 in his POV, and you will also finally get the last scene of Opal in Daemon’s POV.

This bonus material will only be available in the collector editions.

And that’s not all. There are a lot of cool things you’ll have a chance at getting with these new bound editions, plus surrounding them at RT and ALA coming up next year that I can’t wait to share with you guys.

The collector ‘s editions will also be rebound with brand spanking new and very fresh covers. And guys, I’ve seen the covers and not only are they absolutely stunning, they’ve done something so cool with the cover, my jaw hit the floor. They are so different, and I am beyond happy with them.

Since these new volumes are releasing in June of next year, all existing and current paperbacks in the Lux Series (Obsidian, Onyx, Opal, and Origin) will be phased out. That means once the print run is exhausted, no more books will be printed with their current covers. So if you guys are wanting any of those books with the old covers, you might want to go grab yourself one, as they will not be reprinted. At this time, I am hearing that the cover for Opposition will most likely match the new collector’s editions of the Lux Series, and I’m also hearing some cool things that they might be doing with that, but the cover for Opposition hasn’t been confirmed either way at this time.

Now, I know there’s going to be the question: What about the cover models that are currently featured on the Lux Series? Pepe and Sztella are always going to hold a special place in my heart as Daemon and Katy, as I know they’re going to hold a special place in the reader’s heart, but as you guys know, they are featured on many, MANY and MANY covers at this time, which is one of the problems we were running into when it came to getting the earlier novels stocked heavily in the bookstores. They will not be on the new cover and most likely not on Opposition, because…

People had seen the images/covers before.

They’d seen the images/covers many times.

The team at Entangled had to make a decision: keep the existing covers and not get the books into more hands, because with the new distribution we literally HAD TO change the covers, or we changed the covers and got the books reissued back into the market.  Thankfully, the decision was made to change the covers. It was hard, because I do love the old ones, but it was the right decision for the series, and because as an author, I want all the readers to get the chance to read the Lux Series. There are a lot of people out there that don’t order books online or read digital copies and only shop at bookstores. And I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve been contacted by readers who wanted to read the Lux Series but couldn’t find Obsidian or Onyx in their bookstores or libraries. And that’s always sucked, because we all knew what the problem was, but we couldn’t, at that time, do anything about it.

So I’m thrilled that this is happening. Not only will these new editions hopefully expand the readership, but it is also a great method to get what you guys want in your hands—new, never-before-seen material and extra bonus content.

All of this is great news and I cannot wait until the covers are revealed. I’m not sure when exactly that is happening, but probably sometime over the next couple of months.  And of course, these changes are ultimately leading up to what we ALL WANT TO SEE.

No. No. Not Theo James. Movie tie-in covers.

Oh yeah.

Movie and TV Updates

Appears to be time for me to do a quick update about the Lux series movie option and the Covenant series TV option since I’ve been receiving a lot of questions recently about the two deals.

There are no updates that I can share at this time. That doesn’t mean things are not happening. Trust me, things are definitely moving along on both deals, but there isn’t anything I can talk about at this time.  Movie and TV people tend to be very strategic in the way they make announcements and let updates out to the public, and I’m only brought in on these things when they are at a certain stage.  Waiting totally sucks, but I hope and I *think* it will pay off in these cases.

When books are optioned for film or TV and even when they are acquired and moving into production, there will be long, really loooooooonnnngggg gaps of silence that do not mean that interest has waned or been lost,  but just that there are things can’t be public knowledge yet.

An option is the first step in getting a book made into a movie or TV show and a lot of things happen during those periods of silence.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

- I will have no control over casting on either of these deals, which I’m a 100% okay with because I’m not a casting director.

- I don’t know what network will pick up the Covenant Series or if it will be aired in what country. That won’t even be decided until a pilot is ordered by a network and picked up by said network.

- I have full faith in both companies that they will do right by both series.

If you’d like more info on the Obsidian film option or the Covenant TV option, please check out the FAQ part of this website. Also, that is the section that will be continuously updated when there is news I can share with everyone. So if you miss a blog post and are curious if there is any updates, check there and you’ll get an immediate answer to your question.

With all that being said, there will be some book related announcements over the next week or so, and probably even some leading into early-ish next year that have been brewing in the background for quite some time. Totally good and totally cool stuff.

Check out this AWESOME-I-ALMOST-FELL-OVER-REVIEW-FROM-KIRKUS-BOOK-REVIEWS.

Yes, it’s another novel about exotic paranormal hybrids, but this one’s written with wry humor that seeps into nearly every sentence, making it constantly entertaining no matter its subject. The narrative sizzles with as much tension as romance. Armentrout’s sophisticated, layered humor keeps the narrative bubbling all the way through, and she delivers a terrific character in Roth, the unrepentant demon. Totally entertaining.” – KIRKUS Reviews

AHHHHHHH.

So here is the random contest. Prize is a bunch of swag below.

What’s cool about this swag pack? A lot of the stuff is signed by the authors. Not all, but a decent amount. Also there are only a handful of origin bookmarks left and I’m not able to send anymore out in swag requests, so……

This is the image to share for one of the entries in the giveaway. Check out the details in Rafflecopter. This contest is like all my others. Winner has 7 days to claim prize. You know the drill by this point.

Getting to know Fic Fare

It’s getting to know you time!

But first, last week’s winner of Goblet of Fire is Patricia Cruz ! Congrats. Please email your address to jenniferlarmentrout@live.com using the subject line Goblet of Fire Winner

Blogger of the Week:

Fic Fare

What country are you in?

United States

How long have they’ve been blogging and rolling?

I year and 6 months

(Ack, you’re about to hit the terrible twos)

Q1. Why did you start blogging?

It all happened because of a little suggestion by a friend. She noted that I was reading a ton, and simply posting my reviews to Goodreads. She said I should start putting those reviews on my blog to share my thoughts with my followers. Once I started, I couldn’t stop and it turned into this amazing hobby where I’ve gotten to read amazing books and meet amazing authors and get to know them on more of a personal level than just having read their words and that’s something I could never have expected!

Q2. Do you do weekly memes and if so, what is your favorite meme and why?

We do Top Ten Tuesday and Waiting on Wednesday – I have to say the Top Ten Tuesday is my favorite – it makes me think about the books I’ve read or am planning to read in a different light than just whether it was good or not.

(I love the Top 10 posts too. They are very cool and it’s that time of year for them. Or will that be Top 13?)

Q3. What is your favorite aspect about blogging?

I love getting the chance to interact with authors, and I love sharing the things I get to experience with my followers. Whether it’s an author interview or an event or a giveaway of some sort it’s all been an incredible experience.

Q4. If you can be stuck on an island with any author, who would it be and why?

UGH I can only pick one? Maybe I’d pick Tracey Garvis Graves! I think her research for On The Island might do us some good!

Q5. What book would you give up your left arm and maybe even a leg to see it translated into film or TV? Tell us why!

Reboot by Amy Tintera – holy crap can you imagine Wren kicking everyone’s asses and sweet Callum. I remember doing a top ten tuesday on this very topic. I know for a fact that your books were on that list, and thankfully, the following week you made your announcement!

(Well, thank you. I need to check out Roboot. I am so far behind on reading)

Q6. What is your favorite question to ask an author and why?

What is the last book you recommended to someone?

(Good question!)

Q7. What TV show is a not-miss for you?

The Walking Dead… because ZOMBIES

(YESSSSS!!!!)

Q8. What is your favorite movie that you can watch over and over again?

Any Indiana Jones movie … except Crystal Skulls because..meh

(I loved those movies)

Q9. Are you a cat, dog, fish, or gerbil person?

I am an any kind of animal person (except bees)

(Bees need love too)

Q10. Do you prefer print or digital?

I love love print because then I can get them signed (I hope) but don’t mind digital at all.

Q11. What is your favorite genre to read and why?

Dystopian without a doubt.

Q12. What would you like to read more about?

I love well-done sci-fi and time travel stories!!

Finally, what is your favorite book of all time and why?

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

It’s a thought provoking read, with incredibly developed characters and a story that will have you laughing and crying and sobbing in turns. I found myself incredibly moved by Will & Clark’s story… When I even look at the cover, I’m immediately taken back to them and their situation.

Today, you have a chance to win an Kindle copy of Be Before You.

I’m done

Guys. GUYS. I am done. I am finished with the first draft of Opposition. I AM FINISHED

This is me right now

Good Lord, this book was going to kill me. It took 31 days to write, which I know, isn’t a huge amount of time, but I was spending like 12 plus hours a day working on this book. And last books are always the hardest for several reasons. It’s end and that’s always bittersweet and I firmly believe that last book in a series can make an entire series. And it also can break an entire series. So there’s a lot of pressure when it comes to that.

But it is the end of this story. So…

But this is the 9th book I’ve written this year. I think. I might be forgetting one. 9 books. I think I need a coma.

So I’m taking off the rest of December from writing. Well. Kind of. I don’t think I could go several weeks without writing and I probably will start working on Stay With Me next week (I’m EXCITED), but I need the break from the pressure of HAVING TO WRITE. And besides I have so much to do since I’ve spent the last month buried on my computer.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that the 1st draft of Opposition is done, sent off to a beta reader or two and for now it’s a closed book.

P.S. I’ll have the Getting to Know You post up tomorrow.

Why I’m not the person to ask about Self-Publishing

Someone asked me today how did I become a bestselling author from self-publishing and it’s a question I get asked a lot from authors who are traditionally pub’d thinking about going the self-published route and those who are now starting out.

I would love to answer and say, “Because I’m da boss.”

But that’s so not true.

I am the last person anyone should ask about how to be a successful self-published author.  That might sound like a strange statement when I had a self-published book hit number 1 on New York Times and all that jazz, but it’s actually the truth.

Why? Because my success (whatever “success” really means, b/c it’s so subjective) story is not one tied only to self-publishing. I am not an “indie” success. Not really. Not like most “indie” authors who started off  self-publishing books and who did ALL THAT WORK, from ground zero of book one and so on, all by them themselves or with their team of people. And by me saying I’m not an “indie” success is not me knocking indie authors. It’s me saying they deserve WAAAAAAY more credit than I do. Like they deserve a round of mother-freakin’ applause.

They deserve a Dean Winchester gif saying:

Because they’d done things that only I can dream of.

My venture into self-publishing was not the typical dive into self-publishing, which is why I’m the worse person to get that advice from.  Here is why.

Before Wait for You was self-published and did it’s thing (which is my only book I’ve self-published), I’d already had 12 books on the market. Those 12 books were with small presses, which means on those 12 books, I had the support of a publisher, editorial team and marketing. Out of those 12 books, at least 6 or so of them could be found in bookstores. I’d  secured two “traditional contracts” before Wait for You was self-published and did it’s thing, one with Disney/Hyperion and one with Harlequin Teen. And I’d debuted on the USA Today bestseller’s list 3 times (I think??) before I self-published Wait for You.

What does this mean?

It’s means I came into self-publishing with a platform– an audience, relationships with bloggers and reviewers that were built and cultivated over the course of 12 books in different genres.  And that platform wasn’t just built by me–it was framed out and added on by my agent, my publishers, editors, and marketing teams I’d worked with on 12 books leading up to Wait for You. I’d had 12 books under my belt to get to know the market and I worked with many marketing teams to create my own strategy. I also had 12 books published and was able to skirt the stupid stigma that some people still associate with self-publishing. Some people who wouldn’t review a self-published book picked up Wait for You for review because they didn’t realize it was self-published.

And by the way, that stigma is stupid and makes me do this when people talk smack about self-published authors:

Because no matter what, I am PROUD to be a part of the self-publishing community and the fact that they are proving there are needs where small and big publishing houses were lacking, and these authors are typically business savvy, ballsy, and bad-ass. They are the ninja of authors.

Anyway, having all those things going into self-publishing is not normal for self-publishing. It’s getting more normal.  A lot of traditional authors are going that route, but my case and their cases, are not typical self-publishing cases.

I should probably never be toted as that percentage of success stories, because the real success stories are Colleen Hoover, Jamie McGuire, Tamara Webber (did I spell her name wrong? Probably), Abbi Glines, HM Ward, Katy Evans, Molly McAdams, Cora Carmack, Jay Crownover, Amanda Hocking, Bella Andre–oh my Goodness, I could keep going. These are the people who probably could give the best advice and are truly sensations when it comes to how they built their brands from the ground up.

Of course, I had a HUGE hand in the building of my brand, because I take responsibility for myself and my career,  but I also had a lot of help. I had a lot of pushes and I had a lot of people that helped me a long the way. I jumped into self-publishing with a parachute AND a safety net. So if I turned out to be one giant fail whale, I could be like the nope octopus and pretend that never happened.

There was nothing special, ballsy or groundbreaking about that or gives me any right to dispense advice.

So when people ask me how did I become a “successful self-published” author, my answer is probably not what people are looking to hear. It’s kind of weird and it goes like this:

“Well, I signed with two small presses, did good with them, got an agent, sold to the big guys, signed a few more with the small presses, hit bestsellers list, and then I self-pub’d a book.”

And let’s be honest, that just ain’t real helpful.

But you know what I can say that is helpful?

Never give up.

Cheesy, right? Come on, that is cheesy-mc-cheesers, but it’s true. Want to know why?

Ask me why I self-published Wait for You instead of how did I make it successful.

Answer. Yo.

I self-published Wait for You, because after the small presses, the agent, the books in stores, and the bestsellers lists, I got rejected on the manuscript. Turned down. Thank you, please come again.

But I didn’t give up.

Instead of shelving the book, I self-published that beeotch and within a month and a few days of being rejected, Wait for You hit the NY Times list and…. well, here we are.  *GRINS*

I feel that everything I’d done, my agent and what my publishers had done were all leading up to what happened with Wait for You. So in a way, it was a group effort and atypical. I don’t know what it takes to be a successful self-published author because my experience was based on working with publishers and my agent, interacting with readers and reviewers all before I took the dive.

I’d love to find out though and to self-pub again, but I also know I’d probably wouldn’t be able to recreate what happened with Wait for You, because it’s kind of like the Big Mac sauce. I think I know there’s thousand islands dressing in  there, but I ain’t sure. It’s the same with making it work–I think it was because I had a platform and a strategy, but I can never be sure. Not a hundred percent.

But there are others out there who can and who do it book after book. They are the ones who deserve to give advice and who you should be listening to. Not me. But I could probably give advice on how to do marketing the best you can and how to use Supernatural gifs. You know, real useful stuff.

And in closing, a Theo James gif…

How long have they’ve been blogging and rolling?

Since January 16th 2012

Q1. Why did you start blogging?

I started blogging back when I was tired of waiting on The Ivy: Rivals by Lauren Kunze and I wanted to do an activity to distract me. I also started because I wanted to feel the thrill of receiving ARCs.

Q2. Do you do weekly memes and if so, what is your favorite meme and why?

My favorite meme ended a while ago. Still, it will always be my favorite because from my first post to the last, it was the meme with a small community that made me smile and laugh and just be thankful for.

(Soooo, what was the meme? I’m soooo curious.)

Q3. What is your favorite aspect about blogging?

The community. Cliche, but the truth. The comments I receive and the people I got to know despite my quiet personality.

(That’s not cliché)

Q4. If you can be stuck on an island with any author, who would it be and why?

Though I probably annoyed her enough from Facebook comments and going to all her book’s launch parties, and the one splendid talk at starbucks, I would enjoy spending a long time on an island with Brigid Kemmerer. I love all her characters, though Hunter can be emotional, and she is the first author I had a interesting conversation with.

(Aw, this will make Brigid so happy. She’ll probably cry. I bet she’s crying right now as she reads this)

Q5. What book would you give up your left arm and maybe even a leg to see it translated into film or TV? Tell us why!

Hidden Talents by David Lubar. I leafed through my brittle pages of this book many times and I just need to see this movie.

(I’m gonna have to look this book up.)

Q6. What is your favorite question to ask an author and why?

What is a mundane but exciting event in your life that you would like to share?

(Cleaning the house.)

Q7. What TV show is a not-miss for you?

Desperate Housewives because Brenda Song’s voice, exciting stories with terrific, flawed characters and suspense.

Q8. What is your favorite movie that you can watch over and over again?

The Prestige! A must see for all the world. The best final line. No matter how many times I see this movie, I want to watch it again. Tesla!

(Is this the one about magicians? I remember watching it and being confused as all holy hell)

Q9. Are you a cat, dog, fish, or gerbil person?

Dogs! Cute, lovable, always happy, delighted by my presence and non-judging.

(Cats totally judge. It’s true. It’s even in the way they look at you, you can tell they are judging you and your life choices)

Q10. Do you prefer print or digital?

Print.

Q11. What is your favorite genre to read and why?

Contemporary mysteries because I like being surprised and relate to what places and events the characters mention.

Q12. What would you like to read more about?

Where a character pretends to be another person because they want to and not because they are force to.

( I want to read a book where a stripper strips because they want to and not because they have to, so I feel ya.)

Finally, what is your favorite book of all time and why?

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire because the amazing mystery, terrific challenges, Herminone’s steadfast friendship, Ron’s struggle to be a non-jealous best friend, Victor Krum and Cedric Diggory at their fineness. “What would come, would come … and he will have to meet it when it did.” (Rowling 734), is the last line that inspires me to not be anxious towards the future challenges and just prepare for any possibility.

Today you have a chance to win Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. You know the drill.
