2020 In the Rear View Mirror
Happy New Year!
I waited until today to write this up because I didn’t want to jinx it. Physically, 2020 sucked for me. Professionally, it was one of my best years to date. So… let’s call it a draw, 2020, shall we? AND NEVER SPEAK OF IT AGAIN!

On the physical front, 2020 was painful and damn-near debilitating. In no particular order, I got shingles (again), dislocated my knee (again), had a kidney stone (again), and had a migraine so bad back in June I couldn’t stand up for t...

Exciting News
I’m an Esther Friesner fan. Always have been since I first stumbled upon her work years ago. She’d edited and created some of the more dark and humorous anthologies over the years at Baen Books, all of them with a play on words to mess with those who oftentimes take themselves a little too seriously. Hey, I’m a fan.
Well, I was joking around last week and mentioned that Baen missed out on one hell of an opportunity. Instead of “Fangs for the Mammaries” (one of Esther’s anthologies), I stated ...

The Christmas Update
I had a friend reach out to me this evening and it reminded me that I haven’t updated the website in almost two months.
Oops.
So what’s new, you ask? Well, I turned in the epic fantasy novel on October 30 and now am waiting to hear back on that from the editor. While that was going on, I went ahead and started the sequel. That’s about 15% complete at the moment. There are a few things I’m waiting to hear back from the editor about, so there’s not much further I can go for the time being. I...

Aang vs Korra — The War of the Avatars
I don’t watch a lot of TV. I’ll pick up a show here and there, but week in and week out commitment? Ugh, no thanks.
However, my burgeoning career as an author has allowed me to pretend I have a little gravitas within the industry (I don’t, really, but roll with it). I’ve been watching a few shows on my streaming channels (I have a few. Not many, but a few) and I just finished Avatar: The Last Airbender yesterday. Today I started Avatar: The Legend of Korra and right away I felt a very differe...

Cover Reveal and Quick Update
Crossed 120,000 words in the epic fantasy novel today. I’m hoping to wrap it up by next weekend while keeping it under 140,000 words, but I’m not getting my hopes up (about the completion date, not the word count).
In the meantime, I have another cover reveal. About a year and a half ago I was approached about writing a novella in the Sha’Daa universe, in collaboration with Eric S. Brown and Gustavo Bondoni. It was going to be titled SHA’DAA: ZOMBIE PARK, which is a fricking cool title. The ...

We Shall Rise Anthology
I’m alive, I swear. I’m nearing the end of the epic fantasy novel and I keep forgetting to update here.
Kurt Miller, the cover artist of multiple New York Times bestsellers, was tasked with doing the artwork for the next Black Tide Rising anthology, WE SHALL RISE. My short story, Appalachia Rex, was chosen to be the “cover story”.

Yeah, so my whole “Catholic schoolgirls vs zombies” story? It’s scheduled to be published June 2021 from Baen Books, along with stories from Mike Massa, Jod...

Good Versus Evil
One of the really cool things about being a reader as well as a writer is to go back and read those who inspired you when you were younger. To be whisked away to faraway and magical lands of adventure. Of dragons and knights, of the entire escapism which, to me, is what epic fantasy is supposed to be about. Where the good guys win and the evil is defeated, and a character’s redemption arc isn’t some hamfisted attempt to have a popular villain become marketable by cynical profiteers.
That… was...

The Unlucky Few
I’ve been backing away from social media this past week in order to focus on the Epic Fantasy novel and I actually became far more productive. Weird, that. It’s almost as if social media is nothing but a time sink. Weird, right?
I hit the usual halfway point in regards to word count but I can’t shake the feeling this means I’m about 1/3 of the way through this novel. I’m being hopeful at having it done by Halloween, but at the current writing pace that would put the book at almost 700 pages l...

Second Chance Angel Release
My quasi-adoptive (she sort of adopted me, and I didn’t say no) sister, Kacey Ezell, had a book come out yesterday with her coauthor Griffin Barber. It’s a space opera noir thriller that I can’t wait to get into, and is titled SECOND CHANCE ANGEL. It’s available at Barnes & Noble, Target, and other booksellers. I’ll post the link to Amazon here. I’ve got my copy but since I’m neck deep in Top Secret Epic Fantasy project, I won’t get to read it until October. So no spoilers, people!

No hea...

It Can’t Happen To Us
We forget we’re mere mortals more often than not. We think “it can’t happen to us” while watching people around us get old, sick, and eventually die. But it can happen to us. It does happen.
Men are taught from an early age by society that once you’re no longer a young boy, you just need to toughen up and hide your hurts. We’re not supposed to complain about our various hurts, be they emotional mental, or physical. We put off getting screened for diseases like cancer. While women are encourag...
