Oops. Accidentally sent a blank tweet by wiping dribbled soup off my phone. Sorry. #
Toddler quote of the day: (she was fast asleep then sat bolt upright as I was leaving the room) "Animals don't have nostrils do they?!" #
I just made a hot chocolate. But instead of using milk I used custard. I feel sick now. #
Toddler Quote of the Day: "Ta daaa!" (she had taken all of her clothes off and star-jumped into the bathroom) #

On This Day… 2 Yrs Ago

21st Feb 2010

Snow Day. Where I grew up we were surrounded by countryside. Almost every winter, without fail it snowed. Proper good snow. Snow is good. Snow is my friend. Snow meant a number of different things:

No school (unless a teacher could make it in and open up. We had no excuse for not turning up as our house was actually attached to our primary school).
No power, or water, or both.
No traffic. The country lanes were impassable.
A heroic attempt at making a snowman would usually halt half way through, ending up with a big ball of leaf-strewn snow sittin gin the middle of the garden.
We went sledging. We ALWAYS went sledging.

Except when I left home I also left the countryside, which meant I hadn't been on a sledge since 2001, when I came back home from university for Christmas. Plus, it barely ever snowed! I moved to the North of England where, if anything, you would expect MORE snow than where I grew up in the Midlands. But no. Every winter was practically snow free. Unitl…

You know in Edward Scissorhands when old lady Wynona Ryder says something like "It never used to snow before he came, but now it snows every year", well that's what happened when we had our first child. Matilda seems to be my good snow charm. Ever since she was born we have had snow every winter! And last year, thanks to the (admittedly tiny) slopes of the nearby golf course, we actually managed to go sledging!

The New Face of Jack Samsonite

Anyone who has read my Bio page will know that I'm not exactly fond of my headshot used to promote me/my book. But it would appear that now is definitely the time to change it…

Today, whilst I was at my day job, I walked into the silicone room (it's a room where they cast silicone, not a room made of silicone, though that would be a lot more interesting) and a Chinese friend of mine burst out laughing, right in my face!

Tom! I went on your website! I saw your photo! You look so funny! You look like an American religious man who says 'You must do this!' and your face! Your cheeks are like (bloats her face out) It looks so fat!

The funny thing was she seemed surprised that I wasn't lapping up the praise!

It's not even the fat cheeked thing. But an American religious man who says "You must do this!"??!!! Why????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's one of the worst reviews my face has ever had!

So, expect a new photo.

Very soon.

(I'll be sucking my big fat cheeks in).

(And doing my best to not look religious).

Last Week's Tweets

I'm crouching beside my bed, in the dark, whilst reading tweets. I've been here quite a while & now my knees have locked & I can't stand up. #
Being me is just one big rollercoaster ride of fun filled adventure and excitement!

And creaky knees. #
I'm writing a list of all the stories I want/need/have to write. There are so many that I keep forgetting them! #
I'm listening to a new audiobook at work today. Bit boring really. Shame. #
Ooh, Jack Samsonite has been reprinted again, this time with a spangly new addition to the cover! http://t.co/GnIGrAaX #
What is it with the Nintendo Wii? My toilet has a better WiFi connection! #
So @totalfilm are hyping the nips out of the Hunger Games movie. I'm guessing I should read the book? #
Toddler Quote of the Day: "Daddy can you skip to the bit where Dumbo drinks the wine? That's my favourite bit!" nice work Disney. #

I think my daughter has been possessed overnight #thechildfromhell #
I just lost 7lbs in 12 hrs on the 'I'm Hideously ill' diet! #
Trying to explain to the possessed child (thankfully exorcised) that snow doesn't equal Christmas. Failing. #
All work and no play (play = writing) does give me time to listen to lots of audiobooks. This week I will be… http://t.co/23OqwH9C #

It's Official

I mentioned in an earlier post that Jack Samsonite 2 is being published in 2013. This was actually really hard for me to do because it was never actually a signed and sealed deal!

I don't think it's because I'm a pessimist but more because I'm naturally cautious ('If it seems too good to be true, then it probably isn't true' is a lesson that springs to mind), and celebrating an event before the event has actually arrived really does seem like waving a red rag at fate.

So even though my publishers had told me that they wanted to publish my 2nd book, and even though they confirmed this at a recent blogger event, I still didn't allow myself to get too carried away until I signed the contract.

It was exactly the same with my first book too. I remember being SO excited by the news, but not allowing myself to get excited about it, because it really did seem too good to be true (I may have blogged about this last year, I can't remember), until months later when the contract arrived. It's a bit like having a baby, only with less blood and screaming and… babies.

Anyway, getting to the point, MY BOOK 2 CONTRACT ARRIVED ON FRIDAY!!!! I promptly signed it, then put the relevant copies straight back in the post. It is now official, my second book is definitely… okay, this is the part where I remember that even a contract doesn't ensure a book will be published, but more that there is an intention for it to be published, but there's plenty of stuff that can derail that intention en route. But hey, if I wait until the book is actually published ("if") to celebrate, my entire nose might explode from the anticipation (it happens. True fact). So celebrate I did. Like this – "woooooooo!"
