Glowing Eyes in the Dark

I am a grown woman. I have a child of my own. I know that there is nothing lurking in the night.

However, I question this when a glance into my bedroom reveals glowing blue eyes staring at me. Small, but definitely glowing, and blue, not my black cat's yellow eyes. And is that…blue light coming out of its mouth?

It??

No, no. More like…yeah, like THIS. Only blue.

Here's the thing. Yeah, there's a light switch by my door, but I have a ceiling fan too, and I sleep with it on. So when I go in each...

New Story Alert!

A very short one just for fun. Pancakes, a Demon, and You right here for your reading pleasure!

I am now working fervently on editing the story for Goodreads. I am. *nods firmly*

Oh, and for any (still) following it, I put up a new chapter of Hits on AFF.

Now I am working on Romeo. Yep.

Summertiiiiimmeee…

…and the living is easy…

Okay, I'll stop singing now. Don't leave!

So I'm free for the summer. This is glorious news! I have so much to do, and now I'll have time to do it! Just as soon as I stop screwing around. ;)

Maybe you do better, but for me it's hard to shift into work-at-home mode instead of vacation mode. When I can do stuff whenever I want, the odds are when I want is going to be "later." And though I have tons of stuff on my list that I very much want to do…well, it still lands...

I'm Sending a Book to Milwaukee

It's supposed to be secret, you know? Don't let your right hand know what your left hand is doing and all?

That said, I'm sending a copy of my book to Milwaukee. It's going in this library. I'm very pleased.

See, in my daydreams I get rich from my books, yes, but that's not really the goal. No, what I really want is for my stories to be read. As I said over on my "About" page:

I want to write the book you reach for when you need a favorite quote at half past your bedtime, the book you read bits...

Sparklebrain Reason Two: Great Review

So yesterday I was already in not-so-stable shape (shut up) because of Wendy Pini-induced sparklebrain that kept me from sleeping properly.

Then I saw this: Reviews by Jessewave (NSFW due to pretty boy-pictures! No pr0n, though.)

We're just not gonna mention how wildly happy (and giddy, and dumb) yesterday was, 'kay? That blog post was pretty much the sum of yesterday's coherency. Which is why you get this one today.

Am I dancing still? You know it! I've been thrilled to receive some pretty...

Sparklebrain Reason One: Wendy Pini

Have you ever met your hero? I have–and she's even more amazing in person.

If you like fantasy or awesome or elves or stories of the Other or great art or amazing storytelling or any of a number of wonderful things, you've heard of (or should have heard of!) ElfQuest. It is, of course, the magnificent creation of Wendy and Richard Pini. She's the artist and author. He's the publisher, businessman, promoter, sounding board, supporter…together they are an incredible team.

If you haven't read...

In Response to @WSJ: #YASaves

In reaction to this article by a clueless person:

I work in a middle school. We had, for a brief time, a Gay-Straight Alliance. A parent–not a bad guy, just clueless–asked me "Are there gay kids in middle school?"

Well, yeah. Before they go to high school, they go to middle school.

If you're a parent, I'm not necessarily talking about you, but it might be time for a reality check. Because I have to say: clueless parents are by far the majority. I deal with parents every single day who have no...

Why 99 Cents Is a Perfectly Good Price for a Book

I love (and by love, I mean, get alternately amused or annoyed by) the accusation that a low price devalues me, and every other writer with me.

Do I think 99 cents is all my book is worth? Hell, no. I put a lot of hours and tears and edits into that book. I have complete faith in its ability to whisk readers away for hours at least (it's a fast read). I think it might even make their lives better–I've already had two readers tell me it's become their comfort book, reread when they need a...

Strreeetttch

I'm writing a romance story.

Those of you who know me can pick your jaw up now.

You may have noticed I'm not big on romance as a genre. I had a scarring experience as a teen with 1970s era Harlequins. And I'm easily annoyed by sentiment. Those women who watch romantic comedies? Not me. My favorite romantic movie scenes are Hicks teaching Ripley how to use his gun and Martin Riggs boasting "that's my girlfriend!" as Lorna Cole beats up three guys.

Not long ago I read and loved Jenny Crusie's a
