If It’s Wednesday, It Must Be Montezuma

Montezuma Castle, that is. That was our Wednesday trip.

Wednesday was quite a journey to get to our destination. We hit two rest stops!

This was the view from the first. We were not far from Casa Grande, and still had a long long ways to go. But the little one had to pee, and all the world stops for that, let me tell you.

Here’s more gorgeous terrain, with rather more road than I like, but hey. It’s still pretty.

I’m always trying to catch birds in motion. Here’s a vulture from the rest stop almo...

Absence Makes the Hit Count Drop

Adventure Week continues, but I’ve been too tired to blog. Also I’ve been trying to catch up on Camp NaNo. At this point (the morning of The End) I need about fifteen thousand words.

If I were a reasonable person, I’d give up. I may yet.

But. It’s 0748, and I have 35,401 words on Beast. I know I can type 15,000 words in a day, but can I write them?

Let’s see. :D

May It Be Forever Untrod

So it’s Adventure Week here at Camp KD. Yesterday was Kitt Peak. Today it was Kartchner Caverns.

These are the Whetstone Mountains outside of Benson, Arizona. In 1974, two dedicated (read “so obsessed they were possibly dangerous to themselves”) cavers revisited a sinkhole one had seen before, and realized the hole was “breathing.” There was a cave down there.

The story is told elsewhere, but I’m going to explain that for fourteen years they kept the cave as secret as they could. They knew many...

Monsoon Too Soon!

Not that I’m complaining, really. We need the rain. I love the storms. But…

It’s not supposed to be here yet!

Generally the monsoon starts around July 4th. I kept that in mind when I planned my one and only week totally off work this summer. My friend and I came up with a list of things to do close to home, and off we went.

Today my friend and I went to Kitt Peak National Observatory. We had planned to have a picnic, walk the whole place, take bunches of pictures, have a great time, and learn lo...

Someone is Superficial on the Internet!

Sometimes I forget that I tend to hang out (online) with people much younger than I am. That the feels are ALL THE FEELS and everything is COMPLETELY INDISPUTABLE.

Anyway. Yesterday I came across a post on Tumblr that upset me. I don’t know if the original was a guy’s post, or from his bio, or what, but it was a picture of a young man and beneath it was a paragraph about who he was and what he found attractive.

In that paragraph, he said he liked–oh, I can’t remember exactly. Something along th...

Over It? You Wish! (and so do I)

Someone reviewed one of my novels the other day, and in the review she made mention of the occasional homophobia my boys run across in my SF.

Okay, first, a clarification–I know it’s common usage (I do it too) but it’s not homophobia. These persons aren’t pathologically afraid of GLBT people. They do not spot a boy in a tiara or a girl with a “boy” haircut and run away screaming. They don’t hide in their houses for fear of encountering gays.

The behavior the reviewer was talking about is not an...

Want to Write Fast?

Turn off the internet.

No, really. You can do it. And you probably won’t actually die.

YMMV.

One scene down, bunches more to go. Onward!

Impatience Has Its Good Points

I don’t wait well. Possibly I should qualify that. If I’m in a waiting room? I’m fine. I’ve got my book, I’m good, just be loud when you call my name. On hold? I’m all right. You’ve probably got ten, maybe even fifteen minutes before I start getting annoyed. (Less if you have some perky recorded voice telling me I can do my business on the internet. If my task COULD be handled on the internet, it damn sure would alreadybe dealt with, okay?)

But when the outcome is uncertain and it matters to m...

Procrastination

I’m 42 years old and I have a problem. Time just…slips away from me. I’ll sit down at my computer meaning to get some writing done, and hours later there are still no words and I don’t really know why.

When kids come to school late and tell me they overslept but they don’t know what they were doing up so late, I tell them “it must not have been important, then.”

Even when I drag myself to work, one bump can derail me. I’ll get stuck on what I want to say in this paragraph and some part of me th...

Sorry About the Structural Damage

Sometimes the damned universe just won’t MOVE. You’re doing all you can, you’re shoving with all you got, and it won’t MOVE.

I’m a patient person, until I’m not. When I decide on something, I want it done. Let’s GO, let’s MOVE, it’s TIME.

The universe does not often work like that. The parts of the universe run by bureaucracies NEVER work like that.

I’ll just be over here. Banging my head on the wall.
