Diversifying

The Seventh DALAI LAMA wrote in the 18th Century:IF THERE IS A WAY TO FREE OURSELVES FROM SUFFERINGWE MUST USE EVERY MOMENT TO FIND IT.ONLY A FOOL WANTS TO GO ON SUFFERING,ISN’T IT SAD TO KNOWINGLY IMBIBE POISON?
I received a cool card from Dorothy Rua of a scene in Cromer, England (wherever that may be).   The photo was taken by Jim Colby.   I liked the sunset and the wild seafront.   Dorothy had more to say:
5-7-91Michael,You may not remember your first or last fishing experience but you’d never forget a scene this beautiful.  Aren’t those some of your favorite colors?  I grew up with gorgeous sunsets this brilliant (in Guam).  They’d literally take my breath away but I don’t recall one quite as romantic as this one.  Perhaps it’s the blues and purples.
No sooner did I get my card(s) in the mail to you when I found yours waiting for me the next day.  It was a welcome surprise.  We must have been on the same wave length.   Ad you remembered the picture…I love it!  MJA in NYC!  Very representative of your trip and the guy on the stone looks great too.  I just realized I have pictures of you in Cancun, Europe and now NYC.   The world traveler…  I wonder where the next trip will lead you.  Myself, I’d like to go on a cruise with a good friend (or friends).  It seems like the ultimate vacation for someone who doesn’t want to do anything but have fun and relax a little.
So you’re back on the job hunting trail.  It sounds like you’re diversifying.   Quite a range you’re looking at and I say “do it”.   Whatever it is you want, go after it!   Whatever you decide on I hope you’ll be able to use your creative talents.  You seem to have so much to share.   You might as well get paid for it.
I appreciate the fact that L.A. is not an inexpensive town, especially if you want to enjoy all it has to offer.   You still have that other option, you know.   The one you left here with:  the aging, but wealthy, Beverly Hills widow.  Ha-ha.   Who knows?   You may be able to find one that won’t require all of your services.  Then again, you may wish to experience all of Life’s varied activities.  Now I’m getting bad…really bad!  No apologies…I’ve been good for way too long.   I can feel it in my bones…time to break loose again. Ha-ha.Think of you often and always enjoy your cards.Love, DorothyP.S.  Love your card…you did send me one from NYC (which is still in my cubicle).  So you know I enjoy it.
A couple of days later I received a postcard from Tarpon Springs, Florida:May 9, 1991Hello Michael,Yesterday I went to SAINT MICHAEL’S SANCTUARY.  The DEAD MILMAN played at the University of Florida on April 21st.   It was just a little absurdity in Gainesville, FL for the day (where my friends will be moving in June).Tarpon Springs, FL (where they currently live) is mostly a GREEK community and they have these annual events.  My friends are strong environmentalists and this community won’t change quickly.More later, Love, Barbara Reynolds
May 10th…The L.A. at-the-movies choices included F/X 2 (an Action-Thriller) that I really liked starring Brian Dennehy.   The other was an unusual documentary about MADONNA, the singer, and an inside look at her life “in Black and White no less” called TRUTH OR DARE.   I wanted to see it.   Alan wasn’t too thrilled but I think was able to endure it to a certain extent.
On May 12th I found a collection of three unusual postcards to send to mom.   One was of a pic urinating; another was of Thorson’s Truck stop Diner in Beaumont, Texas and the last one was of Lautenberg Laboratories that showed clinical lab specialists sniffing the armpits of men for beta testing of personal hygiene.   I figured mom would frown (or laugh) at this unusual group of cards.
May 12, 1991Mom,I found a collection of wacky postcards in my closet that someone sent me a long time ago.  I saw these three and started laughing to myself.  I thought I would send them your way, hoping you’d get a pretty good laugh, too.It is MOTHER’S DAY.  I guess you are at the Banquet.  I know you go to Fruitvale with Helen, Tony, the girls and Helen’s parents at that Chinese Restaurant.  Let me know how it goes.I spent a lot of time writing today. I wrote a number of letters and then I decorated my bedroom by posting about two hundred cards and postcards to the walls of the bedroom.  I put about three pieces of scotch tape behind each card.  The cards covered most of the wall where my Silber Birds used to be.  Now there is nothing but cards on my bedroom walls.  I felt like a change of scenery.  It seems like something you would do. You know how you like to change the furniture around every once in a while. So, how is Grandma doing now?I think I am going to take a nap.  It’s 5:05pm and I feel a little drowsy.  I just heard a group of sirens a little while ago.  I’m glad I wasn’t involved. You and Ashly will be here in just a few weeks.  I can’t wait.  I hope I get a job with the government.  I feel a yearning for a secure job right now.  I think I wouldn’t mind serving ten years with them if it turns out to be an interesting position.  The money is decent.Alan has been talking about another side business other than his real estate.  He can’t seem to make up his mind as to what he wants to do.  I’m not so sure I would be involved or any part of it…anyway.I will keep you posted on the latest with me.  Kisses to the nieces (your granddaughters) from me.Love, Michael

Compassion Is The KEY Word

“It makes you wonder…all the BRILLIANT things we might have done with our lives if only we suspected we knew how.”--Ann Patchett, BEL CANTO, a novel
The 90069 zip code is outrageously expensive for Auto Insurance.   I had to have a plan b…so I am using my mom’s address in Alameda for my Auto Insurance through 20thCentury Auto Insurance.   What a dramatic reduction!   I wrote mom a postcard once she sent me my new insurance card.
I included a note with the postcard that depicted a photographic image of THE FLATIRON BUILDING in New York which is located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.   The photo is by Edward Steichen, an American who was born in Luxembourg in 1897.  He died in 1973.  I love the photo very much.
May 1, 1991Mom,  You forgot to include a “yellow stick ‘em” note with my 20thCentury Auto Insurance documents.   Gee whiz!  I did not even see the Business Reply envelope included either.  I used a stamp with my own envelope after I had sent the application to 20thCentury Insurance.  I know you will get a better Insurance rate from them (versus Allstate) also.   It’s worth it, too.
Here are three photographs of me taken while in New York.  In one photograph I am holding the MACY’s Flower day bag that I got from you.  I know you like those shopping bags.   The photograph of the 1010 Fifth Avenue address is where I would live in Manhattan IF I could afford it.  It’s right across the street from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It is such a nice, clean and ritzy area.  The last photograph was taken on Easter Sunday, 1991.  I was watching Bugs Bunny.I received a registered parcel note today.  I think it’s the postage stamps I ordered.
May 8th is right around the corner.  I better find and mail Ashley a birthday gift.Miss You, Love, Michael
The following day I mailed a NYC postcard of THE COMING STORM, oil on canvas, 1859 by Martin Johnson Heade, b.1819 d.1904 to Paloma:
May 2, 1991Paloma,Hi…just a note to let you know I got your letter and magazine clips.  I’ve been on the job hunt but I’m very picky.   Time will tell.  I just saw a GREAT film called LA FEMME NIKITA.  It was in French with English subtitles.  I just read in this magazine yesterday that the actress won a CESAR AWARD for it.  Did you see it?  She was great.  I love that movie.  I didn’t want it to end. It’s Friday and I am going to the Beverly Hills Library to find a book on Federal Exams.  On Tuesday, May 7th I will be takin a written test for an entry-level management job with the Federal Government.  The Graphics Art ordeal is slow.  I lack computer graphics experience and that costs more money for school, so I am in search of a decent, secure job right now that will pay well.  Keep me posted.I miss you.  Love, Michael
Barbara Reynolds sent me a card from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco:
3rd of May, 1991, 7:30AMI’m in a propeller plane en route from MIAMI to TAMPA.  I had a quick switch of flight.  This is better.  Now is better than later.  I guess I’m drifting.  I could use some sleep on the plane all night.  I walked yesterday.   Alice and I saw this exhibit SACRED ART OF TIBET:  Wisdom and Compassion.   Compassion is the KEY Word.  I learned last year in retreat in France…always good to be reminded. Don’s last day in SF is May 15th.  We had a fun walk through the set for BASIC INSTINCTS (Michael Douglas movie).  I’m looking forward to seeing my friend, Myra Abhati and her husband, Al.  He was born on my Birthday and teaches High School PHYSICS but will go back to school this year to work towards a PhD.  Ah…youth.  Is your course complete?  And are you loving life?  Great photos, great pix.  I know which one I like but I don’t know the number.  Love, Barbara. A miraculous thing happened today, May 3rd.  I saw a brilliant film that I absolutely adore.   It’s called TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY.  It was about a fantastic romance (with great dialogue) that ended with one dying.  Once upon a time there were two people IN LOVE and their names were Nina and Jamie. They were even happy enough to be able to live happily ever after, (not often the case) and then Jamie died. Nina is left with a house full of anxiety, a job teaching foreigners English and an ache that fills the night sky.  I highly recommend this one.  This film put actor ALAN RICKMAN ‘on the map’ for me.  He was amazing.
It seems Dorothy has the competitive edge with her latest in Black and White postcards that she recently sent me.
Postcard 1: VACANCES, 1987, by Edouard Boubat
5-5-91Hi Michael,It seems like a while since I’ve written you.  What’s new in your life?  I called and left a couple of messages on Friday.  You must be busy…a good sign, right?   I’ve been thinking about you lately, so I figured it must be time to communicate. Some things in my life seem a little better at times and other tings continue to remain the same. There are a few more changes on the job at Pac Tel Business Systems (PTBS).  My immediate manager, Mino, left for a position with BUSINESSLAND (they’re having financial problems so I don’t know why he made the switch unless they made him an offer he couldn’t refuse).   Larry (the Director) is still around and I’d like to see him here as long as I’m around.  One of those rare people that has the know how to manage people.   However, I think there still is more to come.
Postcard 2: PERILOUS RIDE DOWN CAPITOL BUILDING STEPS, Washington D.C., 1910Photographer is unidentified.
I didn’t get a chance to hear about your latest in the career front.  Between you envious job search and painting you may not have had time to inform me.I can’t decide whether or not to get my hair cut.   Sometimes I feel like leaving it a bit long and other times I know the length should be shorter to convey that “professional” look.   Too bad I am not involved in the ARTS, and then I’d feel more comfortable with the current length.  Oh well, of all the things on my mind HAIR is not at the top of the list!   Are you still growing yours? The new owners of PTBS are holding a meeting at one of the hotels in Oakland tomorrow.  It is supposed to include food and drinks.   Larry suggested I attend to hear what they have to say.  I may go just because it’s being held from 2pm to 5pm and I will still get paid for the time.  Anything to get out of my cubicle.
Postcard 3: WOMAN IN SEA, Hawaii, 1988, Photographed by Herb Ritts

I am still busy as every with all of the responsibilities of everyday life.  This past week had to be one of the longest ever.  I worked late most days.  I fit in a couple of baseball (Jean-Paul) games, school conferences to make sure both Nicole and Jean-Paul will have the choices they worked toward for this next school year.  I attended an important Homeowners meeting (I usually don’t attend them).  It ended this past Thursday night at 11pm and then I was homeward bound to bake a chocolate cake for work the next day!  Needless to say I dropped into bed at half past midnight.Yesterday was a full day…but I’m going strong today.   By myself (by choice) I am writing you while I watch the water hit the wall through the window at SKATES Restaurant.   There are only three other people in the area right now…so peaceful.  Wonderful!I still have to work on taking a trip to see you.  I wish I knew when you would be able to manage it---some days I wonder if I can manage anything.  Love, Dorothy
And finally I received a pleasant letter from my former Alameda roommate, Michael Miller (who I’ve known since he was a kid).  He’s like a brother to me.   I loved it.   He writes just like his personality.   I could practically hear him speak these words:
5/5/91Today is SUNDAY, May 5th, 1991, Cinco de Mayo CelebrationMichael, Hello from ‘me’ in Alameda.  I hope everything is going well down there in the land of the Palms.Don’t think I forgot about you.  I’m writing now but this is just a short letter.  I will write you again soon.  Thanks for the card from New York.  I appreciate that. This has been a pretty good weekend.  I had party on Friday and it was great.  Jim Ubl didn’t show up, however, but he told me he couldn’t make it.  I met these two people in San Francisco (Louis and Lisa), and they made it to the party.   They are pretty good people.  I’m ‘29’ now.  It feels sort of like ‘19’.  One year left…but it will be gone in a flash.I’ve been working in San Francisco.  That’s how I met those people.I’m going to try to make it to EUROPE this summer; although, I don’t have reservations yet.  I do know approximately when I want to go.  That will be between the middle of June and the end of July.  I’m going to go to the South of France. Are you working?  Or are you a famous artist now?  You’ll do it.  I have confidence in you.I’m thinking about eating something but I’ll probably ride on over to the post-office first and mail this letter along with two others.  Your letter will have company as far down as Santa Barbara (never mind).Hope to see you soon.  Take care.Peace,Michael (10:49am and sunny)

A Final Wave

“I have come to know of one thing,” he said, “of which I myself had no idea once.   As Uncle said of LOVE…it is this:  that you cannot eat your cake and have it.”--THE SUPPER AT ELSINORE (Seven Gothic Tales) By Isak Dinesen
Birda is such a sweetheart and an “artist”.   She sketched an actual bicycle on the outside of an envelope that included a letter for me.   She wrote as follows:
Michael,Today I went for a ride on the old bike.  I ended up by a fountain we once rode around together a long, long time ago.  It started me thinking about you.  I decided it was time to drop another line or two (more like twenty more).
Things are crazy again.  I was released to return to work last Monday.  When I won’t work they told me I was “on-call” which means there is no work.   The railroad is on-strike so there are no cars to be moved in California.  Rumor has it we are going back East to pick up cars and bring them back here to the West Coast.  I could be gone for up to two weeks but you never know.  It’s a day-to-day life I am living.
The weather is perfect.  I’m glad I’m not working and finally out of pain.  I’ve been off for too long but riding the bike is better than work any day.   Eight weeks ago I could only ride about eight miles and I was hurting too much to go on.   Now I just keep going.  I know when I go back to work I won’t have time to ride, so I’m on that bike all of the time.   Well, I’m on it for at least two hours a day.
April 18th…The phone rang and I had to run.  It’s Thursday and I didn’t win the LOTTO.  I am back to work on Monday (maybe).   The strike is over.   It’s amazing.  So I’ll be in California and back to normal.  I am telling you day-to-day is unbelievable.I was out on the bike again.  I’m going to get a tan now.  I may write more later or when I’m lying in the sun, soaking up those rays on a Thursday afternoon.   What a life.  I hope yours is well.   Write soon.Love,Birda
P.S.  New York:  I still haven’t been there.   Someday!   “Rules for a Perfect Marriage” I need to borrow it from you (if you have it).   I’ll need to know the rules if the time ever comes.   Move to New York?  I hate to tell you this but I’m glad you don’t have the funds.  I have a hard time getting to L.A.  If you moved to NY I’d never see y you.
April 20th…It’s me again, Birda.   It’s Saturday night and I’ve decided to stay home and just spend this evening alone.   That’s when I remembered I haven’t mailed your letter(s) yet.  I really am bad about that.  I was going through a box I keep all of my papers in the other day and I came across about five letters from way back that I never sent.
I am still not back to work and I’m off again on Monday (day to day changes).  It’s raining here and cold.  The perfect time to stay inside with the fire, a glass of wine and a blanket…Oreos and milk would be better but I had that last rainfall…   I know I was weak and it shows…but the Oreos were so good.
All I have to do now is remember to put this in the envelope and mail it.Take Care.   Me.
April 26th…I was so alarmed by the opening scene of this film called A KISS BEFORE DYING that just came out on April 26th.  Wow!   The opening has this surprising murder that I totally did NOT expect.  Frightening. Actor Matt Dillon learns that his secret girlfriend Dorothy's pregnancy will sour her relations with her ultra-rich father and so the career-minded Philadelphia student Jonathan Corliss (Matt Dillon) coolly murders her, making it look like suicide.   He then moves to New York to woo her twin sister Ellen (Sean Young).  All seems to go well for him, although Ellen's continued investigations into what she is convinced was not a suicide forces him to kill again.  Outrageous.

April 27th…I met Steven Antol for coffee.   It was brief.  Alan couldn’t make it but he picked me up in Venice after the meeting.   It was a waste of time.   I felt like a stranger while I was with Steven.   I feel better when I am with Alan.   He excites me and is much more interesting in every way.  When I got into Alan's car I waved good-bye to Steven and I really felt that it was a final wave.   It was.

Psychological Testing Exam

There is a telling that one afternoon Old Coyote went out for a walk because it was that time of year when his grandchildren were so peevish that he could not sleep at home.  He came to place on the sunny side of a big sandstone rock where Horned Toad was making pottery.   Ash she moved the molding stone over the soft clay jar, she sang a song.
Old Coyote moved closer and listened.  That would be a fine song to soothe those young ones to sleep, he thought.  But when Old Coyote came around the point of the rock, and Horned Toad saw him, she stopping singing.“Friend Horned Toad,” said Old Coyote, losing his patience, “if you do not teach me that song, I will eat you up.”
At that, Horned Toad began to sing.   And Old Coyote sang with her until he learned the song.  “Now I must be going,” he said, and trotted away singing the song.
About halfway home, he came to a small pond.   There a flock of ducks suddenly flew up in front of him and caused him to spill the song.  He looked about, turning over the stones and peering in the grass, but could not find the song.

Finally, he went back to ask Horned Toad to teach him the song again.“I was startled and spilled the song,” he said to her.  But there was no answer.“Horned Toad,” warned Old Coyote, “I will ask you four times, and if you do NOT teach me the song again, I will EAT YOU UP.”
Still she did not reply.   After asking four times, Old Coyote was enraged, so he swallowed the Horned Toad and started homeward.
When he was about halfway home, Old Coyote stopped and struck himself.  “What a fool I am,” he cried.  “Now I am going home without the song.  If I had just bothered Horned Toad long enough, she might have taught me the song again.  I wish I could take her out and see if she would sing it for me…”
At that moment, Horned Toad lifted her thunder-knife spines and cut her way out.  But Old Coyote fell over dead.   So that is how it happened that he did not learn the potter-making song. THE THUNDER KNIVES,  LagunaAn Isleta Myth
“I’ve Been Thinking About You” by London Beat and “You’re in Love” by Wilson Phillips seem to be the rage as far as music goes right now.  It’s all about LOVE (or so it seems).   We do ALL need “LOVE”.  This is for sure.
The movies are rather stale right now.   Everyone is going to see the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES and I have no desire for that nonsense.   There is another action thriller with Steven Seagal called OUT FOR JUSTICE.   Alan and I went to see it ‘just for fun’.   It kept us in suspense for a bit.
I am amidst a new job opportunity.  It is with a subsidiary of American Express called IDS (Investor Diversified Services).   I went to an initial interview with about 100 applicants who appeared.   We all took a Psychological Testing Exam.   I was one of the “7” that passed with flying colors.   It’s a good thing that I know the answers they want to see.  I have an edge when it comes to psychological thinking (at least I believe so).   Now the “7” of us will be reduced to “2” people who will be offered the job.
Guess what!   I had to memorize a speech.   Alan has helped.  I am one of the “2” winning applicants.  Now American Express-IDS will sponsor me to take my Series 7 test to be a licensed stockbroker.   After this the hard part begins…finding people with a lot of money to become my clients.   Who knows what will come next?
Through talking, he was able to relax.  Talking was the thing he was best at.  He felt his breath come easily.

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse

Question:   “WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE?”Answer:   “I believe that man was climbing to some high destiny that he had struggled from his ape-like existence to his present state of civilization, and that he was gradually climbing and that it was the duty of EVERY ONE OF US to help man onwards in his ascent.”  He added, “This does NOT necessarily mean we have to be goody goody.”--as read in the book by Ben Macintyre, AGENT ZIGZAG
April 12th…Alan and I went to see an interesting film called THE OBJECT OF BEAUTY today.  It opened today.  It featured actor, John Malkovich and actress, Andie MacDowell (who I absolutely adore).  It was a good example of ‘spending money you don’t have’ and ‘living an extravagant lifestyle when it is above your means’.
In a nutshell the story revolved around a tiny sculpture.    Jake (John Malkovich) and Tina (Andie MacDowell) take up residence in a London hotel, living way beyond their means.  He is a commodities broker whose shipment of cocoa beans is tied up by a Third World country's revolution. She is a woman with extravagant tastes who is still technically married to Larry, her first husband.
The two of them are so broke that when it comes time to pay for a dinner at the hotel, Jake hands a credit card to the waiter and prays that it won't be canceled.  A pair of hotel executives, Mercer and Swayle, repeatedly make attempts to confront Jake and Tina about their growing unpaid bill.Only one object stands between the couple and total insolvency (that explains the title THE OBJECT OF BEAUTY).   The object is a tiny sculpture by Henry Moore that was given to Tina by her husband as a gift. But just as she and Jake hatch a scheme to pretend the object is stolen and collect the insurance on it, a deaf housekeeper, Jenny, decides to steal it for herself.
After she steals it Tina and Jake get upset.  Then Jenny's brother decides to take it and sell it, but nobody will buy it and he ends up losing it.  Jenny searches with her brother and find it in a heap of rubble. Jenny returns it then steals it again and when the insurance company comes she hands it over.  Jake and Tina auction it off later and are able to pay for everything and go on vacation…such is life.

I continue to call mom on a frequent basis.  I had the opportunity to speak to my six year old niece, Ashley, on several occasions.   I asked Ashley, “Why don’t you write me a story?   You can write now so I’m sure you can write me a short book, right?”I guess my prompt got her mind going.   To my pleasant surprise a few days later I found a colorful story from her in book format (stapled together).   The story was titled MICKEY MOUSE AND MINNIE MOUSE.
Page 1:Minnie said to Mickey let’s go to the Birthday Party today, so they did.
Page 2: ...and one day a little girl said to one of her friends, “Mickey and Minnie are coming to my Birthday!”
Page 3:…and when it was time for the Birthday…Mickey and Minniecame to her house.THE END
Isn’t that the cutest mailbox surprise…ever!  It made my day.  Isn’t it amazing how something so simple can make you feel so loved?   I hope my inspiration on Ashley will inspire her to ascend beautifully in life.  I feel I have succeeded in the beginning steps of having her to think about and learn to actually WRITE.

He's Just A Friend

The moment was so profound for them.  It would be almost impossible to remember.   Lying naked they said nothing, short of anything to talk about, for desire apparently needed no words.--Eka Kurniawan, MAN TIGER
Just when you think you’ll never hear from someone again…you do.  I guess it is my entire fault because I sent him a postcard.  I was traveling to New York and wanted him to know I was traveling (like him…even though it is more a work effort on his part).
I received a letter from Steven Antol, the United Airlines flight attendant, once again.  Apparently, he does like when I write him a few lines.   I probably should not have written to him.  His letter allows me to envelope more thoughts of him, once again.   Is this wrong?   In reality I know it was just a passionate fling on secluded night on the shoreline of a Hawaiian beach.
I shared with Alan about the possibility of Steven coming to L.A.  He just frowned.  I made it clear to Alan, “I don’t really want to see him…but if I do I want you to meet him.  If he comes I’ll just meet him for coffee or lunch.  Maybe you can meet him the next time he comes for a visit.  He’s just a friend!”Of course Alan frowned once again.  I guess he doesn’t think I should associate with him anymore.  He is probably right because he broke off whatever he had.  It’s all a blur now.   I really have moved-on.   If only he had not replied to my silly New York postcard.  Here’s what Steven wrote:
April 5, 1991Dear Michael,Thanks for the postcard.  It was good to hear from you.  So you’re off having fun in New York?   I hope that you had a great time.  I haven’t really done any pleasure traveling lately.  I did squeeze a trip to visit my family in Pittsburgh last month.
This is a coincidence this month of APRIL as I am flying on LAX trips.  I am in Japan today and I have my first one (to LAX) the day after I get back.  I have three more after that.  I’ll either call you from Honolulu or leave a message on y our machine after I arrive LAX with the dates of my trip.  Let’s get together and have dinner.  I’d love to catch up talking with you and see how you’re doing since you moved to L.A.  I often fly to SFO and always forget that you’re not there anymore.
All is well with me.  I’m flying as much as I can.  I am trying to save money now so I can buy myself an apartment or a small house in the next few years.
Well, I may even talk to you before you get this letter.  I’ll mail it to you from HNL.  It will take about a week if I mail it from JAPAN today.  It’s the weekend here.Aloha and Sayonara…
P.S.  Does this stationery look familiar?   STEVENOn the outside of the envelope:  P.S.  I’m on my way to LAX.  I left a message on your recorder but I have a feeling you may not be home yet from your trip.
And then, Dorothy sent a cool card of a woman alone on the beach.  I couldn’t help but see that as her…very much alone.   She wrote:
4-7-91Dear Michael,
How wonderful of you to think of me on Easter morning over oatmeal at the New York Hilton (no less)!  Receiving cards from you is absolutely terrific.  The HANGING VASE AND PREYING MANTIS card is quite unusual.   The APPLES IN A POT OF PRIMROSES card contains so many of my favorite colors with the brilliance I am always so attracted to.  I just love the next three:  THE LAFAYETTE card with the happy friends parting after what must have been a truly fun evening together.   THE COMING STORM card with the man and his dog enjoying the last moments of calm before the ominous sky opens up on them is interesting.   And THE FLATIRON BUILDING card which describes perfectly the flat face of the building beyond the nights’ mist, yet within sight of the warmly dressed-up chap in the top hat.   And let us not overlook the 90s kind of guy with his casual, yet very together, look wearing GREAT smelling NEW WEST cologne.  I sniffed at the NEW WEST tester at NORDSTROMS a few weeks ago and really liked it.  It’s interesting you included it here.  Do you wear it?   I like the card and I like the scent.
I do want to mention your note and these great cards were quite a surprise!  I hadn’t checked my mail since the 3rd of April because I headed to CARMEL (as you know if you received the card I mailed from there).  I had already received the super PYGMALION AND GALACTICA card from New York, so I didn’t expect to hear from you again until you got back (maybe).   I was feeling a bit sad Saturday afternoon, so I decided to take a ride by myself hoping the beautiful sun-filled day would help me get beyond my sadness and remind me that choices still exist.   We just have to make them.  Anyway, I went to the post-office and discovered the New York HILTON envelope and thought someone had put me on their mailing list for some reason.  I seem to be on everyone’s.  And it wasn’t until I actually looked twice and realized it was from you.Love, Dorothy And then I received another cool letter from Paloma.   She’s so cute.  She sent more clipping of some FRENCH film stars that I don’t recognize.  I did recognize Rosanna Arquette, Anne Parillaud, Sophia Lauren and Girard Depardieu though.    There was some screenwriter she pointed out who she had seen before when she worked for CLUB MED on the Ivory Coast.   I wonder if she misses working at that resort.   She wrote as follows:
Balaruc, le 7 Avril 1991Michael,Thank you for ALL your cards from all over the place (and the napkin and the sugar!).  I really liked the little signature in the back of one of your business cards:  INNOVATIONS IN DESIGN…very impressive!
Why do you especially choose a card for me with the picture used in FRANCE for the Elancyl TV commercial?  Elancyl is one of those soaps and creams to make you skinnier.   Are you sending me a message or what?   And then you send me some EQUAL sugar.Thank you for my Birthday card (the Elancyl one).   It’s a bit late but as you say better late than never.   By the way, dear Michael, no need to remind me of your Birthday.  I don’t think I ever forgot it.Your most frequented store might be THRIFTY DRUG STORE (in Beverly Hills) but your most frequented HOTELS are the Caesars Palace and the New York Hilton!  I, personally, find this one pretty funny.
I don’t think you got the Gerard Depardieu picture.  He didn’t go to the Academy Awards this year.  Here in France they made a big deal of the rape story in the American papers that were published.   They kind of said that everything was made to discredit Depardieu because it wouldn’t be good for the American movie business if a French actor wins.  Here is a picture of Depardieu at the CESARS (the French Oscars).  Cyrano de Bergerac WON the Cesar Awards.
I am also sending you a picture of David Halliday, remember I asked you if you knew him.  He has played in an American movie called HE’S MY GIRL and he lives half in France and half in Los Angeles.  He is a famous singer here.  It wasn’t too hard for him because both of this  parents (who you can also see in the picture enclosed) are famous since the 1960s (also famous singers).   His mother’s name is SYLVIE VARTAN.   Do they sound familiar to you?   She’s been living in the States for years.   She is married to Tony Scotti, an American producer.   You may recognize the blond girl on the left named Estelle Lefebure.   She is David’s wife but she also is one of the ten most famous models in the world.
That’s great that people see me write on the word processor.   They think I am working.I saw GREEN CARD.  You’re right.   That was very funny.  I liked it a lot.  I think any actor that would have played the part would be likeable.  I also liked WITNESS a lot.  Remember that HARRISON FORD is very likeable there, too.
I just read something about SILENCE OF THE LAMBS called “LE SILENCE DES AGNEAUX” in France.   They say that Jodie Foster stayed for a few days in the place where they bring dead people (again…I don’t know the word for that place).  MORGUE   And she plays the part of an FBI Agent.  Isn’t that what you wanted to do?  Well, if you say its good I’ll go see it.   So you don’t like critics, huh?
Sure I can write “32”.   “32” is very young and I’m sure you agree on that, right?
I will stop writing now.  Jonathan is dancing.  He is so funny.   Right next to the water there is a place here in Balaruc where he can ride his bike.  I am going to take him.  It’s sunny and I like to walk there.  I am thinking of getting a bike too so I can ride with him.I’ll write again soon.  Love, Paloma
As I sorted Paloma’s letter into my PALOMA FILE I read another letter or two from her from ‘whenever’.   It’s always fun to go back and read her words:
…You’ll buy another car when you become a famous screenwriter, Michael (a corvette…that’s my favorite one).  At the same time you’ll just buy another one for me.   Well, just remember I always believed in you!   What were you watching to get in that car accident?   Seriously, I hope you’re feeling better.   What happened with the J. WALTER THOMPSON Advertising Agency job you were trying for?
I am sorry I didn’t write much lately.  I’ve had a lot of work.
Lisa just called me.   She’s coming at the end of JUNE with her sister, Alison.   Alison’s father, Michael, is taking them.  I am very happy to see them even if I’m sure Alison won’t recognize me.   She was five years old when I left.   She, of course, is now ten years old.  So what’s the scoop?   Do you have a nephew?
I am sending you one of the latest pictures of Jonathan and me.   Alexandre almost always takes ugly pictures of me.  My eyes are always closed or my hand is in front of my face (and stuff like that).  He messed-up the only pictures he took of me while I was pregnant.    I could have killed him for that.   That’s something I might never see again.  I’m not sure I want another baby.  In fact, right now I am even sure I don’t want another one.
Is Sherri still working?  I guess not.  I think you have to be really brave to have three kids.   They’re really a lot of fun but they really drive you nuts!   Yesterday, Alexandre’s sister came with her two kids who are about Jonathan’s age.   That was just like an earthquake!   Well, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about when all of your nieces are together!
Caroline had a baby (her second one) on February 28th.   Do you remember the first one at the wedding?  It’s a boy named ELLIOT.  Yuck!  I hope your brother didn’t have a boy only to call him ELLIOT.  If he did…then HOW CUTE!   And her sister, Coco, also had a baby boy last week named ENZO.    As you can see we like typical French names (?).
Do you have any good movies to recommend?
Paris is about 550 miles from here.  It takes about an hour by plane.  I keep missing you.  Love, Paloma
….does going to Hawaii and stuff like that ring any bells?   I am kind of sad we are not going to the States after all.  I got used to the idea.  It seems like I’ll never go back there!   Did someone put a spell on me…or what?
I’ll send you a card from GUADELOUPE and maybe some pictures if I can take some good ones.   We are also, of course, going to PARIS like we do every year (our plane leaves from there anyway).
What about you?  I guess you’re going to San Francisco for Christmas.  Do you remember my French friends in Berkeley:  Elisabeth and Agnes?   Did I ever give you their telephone numbers?   If I did you should try to call them once to find out if they still live there (when you go back to the Bay Area).   This way you could tell me about them.   The only big problem is I didn’t give you their phone number because I can’t find my address book.  I will try to find their number.
Well Michael, I have to go…but I’ll write again soon.  I hope that you will too!Love, PalomaI’m sad I won’t see you.
Alas, I received a fun card from Alan by the week’s end.   That was a pleasant surprise.   The guy pictured on the card was an inspiration for me to go to the gym, “Thanks, Alan!”
April 8, 1991Michael,I LOVE YOU.  New York was the best time for us!   Even though you hated PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and loved MISS SAIGON…I LOVE YOU.  After all, two weeks ago you never heard of MISS SAIGON.  Our relationship has evolved into a fulfilling friendship that can never be duplicated.   As we approach April 20th (17 months for us)…we should be thankful that we have a great LOVE and FRIENDSHIP.   We have to look like this card by the summer.  I hope you remember how great it is as your LIFE moves on.  I LOVE YOU and will miss you this weekend.  Come hope to me…soon.Love, Alan Neil FreimanP.S.  I hope you didn’t do it to memories of Steven (just kidding).  I know he’s just a friend.  I can’t wait to meet him for that drink in late April.

Cream Of Wheat

In a place that won't let us feelIn a life where nothing seems realI have found youI have found youIn a world that's moving too fastIn a world where nothing can lastI will hold you… A song played on a solo saxophoneSo stay with meAnd hold me tightAnd danceLike it's the last night of the world--Partial Lyrics from MISS SAIGON, The Last Night of the World
Well, Dorothy Rua sent another cool card from the Sierra Club with a photographic look of colorful starfish on the shoreline.  Here’s what she had to write about:
3-27-91Dear Michael, First, I want to tell you I love the SOME GUYS KNOW card you sent on the 13th…it will remain one of my favorites and will be kept separate with the selected ones I carry with me.  You couldn’t know this but this picture is nearly identical to a scene in a dream I once had!   I do enjoy the card!  The dream wasn’t bad either.  Ha-ha.
Your last 5…”FIVE” cards were great too…and a super surprise!  Each one was so different from the others.  I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw the chubby guy sitting in the corner, facing the wall.  I guess that’s motivation for going to your gym.   Speaking of working out…I’ve really been bad.  I’ve let the cold (sometimes rainy weather) keep me from my walks.   The last several times I went to the exercise room and there was a wait for the equipment so I quit going.  Now I am paying the price every time I look in the mirror or put on my jeans.  I may be able to hold in my stomach but how do you hold in your bottom and thighs?  I really have my work cut out for me this spring!  I hope the weather warms up soon.  Oink! Oink!
So…you’re getting close to the celebrities down there and they’re writing you love notes now, huh?   Did you Mom enjoy Joan Collins’ new book?
I’ve seen a small bit of the MAMA’S FAMILY show in the past but don’t really watch it.  I have seen the ads for DARK SHADOWS.  I have yet to watch that program.  I don’t watch much TV either.   If I have time I’ll read instead.  The programs I watch occasionally are IN LIVING COLOR on Sunday, MURPHY BROWN on Monday, ROSEANNE on Tuesday, CHEERS on Thursday and sometimes JEOPARDY.  Oh and I like EVENING AT THE IMPROV and “any good movie”.
Have you and Alan finalized any of your plans for New York City?  I will definitely look forward to your postcard from the Big Apple.
I went to a Housewarming Party this past Saturday and enjoyed the gathering.  I ran into an old friend or two I hadn’t seen in years.  It seemed extra cozy because it was so stormy outside.
As far as the household atmosphere goes…everything is status quo.  No big changes (though a few may be needed).  The kids continue to do well and bring me joy.  They’re really neat people!  Of course being their mom may influence my opinion.  I reached a milestone recently.  Nicole turned “13” and became my first teenager!  How can that be when I keep thinking I’m only “28”?  Oh well, Life goes o and I keep getting younger!  You’re right.  Family can be wonderful but your lifestyle is great too.  And as you say…you are happy.
So, ho was STAR watching after the Academy Awards?  Did you see anyone that made an impression on you?  I can only thing of a handful that would make any kind of impact on me (one being Sean Connery, 007 himself).   Then there are also “STARS” from the sea as I reflect on this starfish card.  All clinging on…but they are a colorful lot!  More later… Happy Easter,Love, DorothyP.S.  Thanks for mentioning the problem with a Beverly Hills address.
Soon…the time had come and Alan and I were flying to the East Coast.   I sent mom three cards from New York City that I thought she’d like.    When I went to see the Broadway Show of MISS SAIGON I thought of my mom while watching it and wanted her to experience it.  I want to bring her here.  I will.
March 29, 1991 Hi Mom, Here is a nifty postcard I picked up here at Bloomingdales, New York City.  Love You, Michael
March 29, 1991Hi Mom, Here is a postcard from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  I forgot how great it is here in NYC.  It really is like another world.  It is the closest you can get to a city like Paris, France.  We will have to come here together one day.  Love You, Michael Joe March 30, 1991Mom,Do you see the new reindeer .19 cent postcard stamp?   I really like it.
I have been having Cream of Wheatevery morning for breakfast.  Can you guess who that reminds me of?  It’s like the good old days when Dad made it for breakfast before I left for school.I cannot believe it is snowing here in New York.  Tomorrow is Easter Sunday.  I have only experiences sunny Easter Sundays.  I wonder how it will be here. Here is another postcard showing details of an exterior lid of a Japanese box, sprinkled design, inlay of mother of pearl and lead, aventurine on black lacquer.Love Always,Michael
As I wrote mom about the Cream of Wheat I wondered if my dad’s mother would make Cream of Wheat for him before he went to school.  I believe she did.  Yes, I think I recall him telling me so.  It’s tradition.  I’m glad he passed on the memory and action for my brothers and me.
I sent Paloma the same postcard of the John Sloan Painting THE LAFAYETTE because it had that aura of Paris, France through my eyes:
March 29, 1991Paloma,New York reminds me of Paris in a lot of ways.  There are Parisians here everywhere I go.   It’s so cosmopolitan.  I shouldn’t stay away from New York for so long. Thinking of You, Love, Michael Armijo
…and I wrote Paloma on Easter Sunday using the New York HILTON and TOWERS stationary:Dear Paloma,Here are a few postcards I picked up at the Museum here.  I thought you’d like to see them. It’s sunny today, so that’s good.It rained yesterday and was cold.I’ve seen two BROADWAY shows:  LOST IN YONKERS and MISS SAIGON.   Both were quite good. Lots of foreigners are here in this hotel.I like EQUAL sugar in my coffee.  Have some.I’m having breakfast here at the NY Café, enclosed is a napkin from here.Love You,Michael

I Miss Her

I have been wondering about this business of LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.  Of course it sounds foolish.   But isn’t it true that the shape of a face or the look of an eye can do more to determine love than the deepest spiritual compatibility?  Isn’t it true that the man who loves is NOT rational?  Well, it seems very possible to me that one can make the error of falling into love at first sight.  I believe THE CORRECT PERSON can make a mark that is unremovable.I stopped, under a magnolia tree, and repeated to myself:  LOVE IS A MYTH-Calder Willinham, END AS A MAN
It was time to write Paloma again after a great letter from her.  I sent her some of my self-made cards.  My writing clearly sums up what IS going on in my mind these days.  I miss her.
March 20, 1991Dear Paloma,I hope you like my latest collection of cards ‘in here’…chosen especially for you.   All of these cards I made myself and I found the illustrations in various magazines.
Your JUST MARRIED card was very romantic.  I liked it a lot!
Yes, I stayed at CAESARS PALACE in Las Vegas.  It was fun (a very nice hotel, too).  Vegas is only a 40-minute flight from Los Angeles but it takes four and a half hours to drive there from L.A.
Thanks for liking the turquoise color in my business cards.  They are kind of “beachy” aren’t they?  I didn’t need your critique about the two ink bars—but from you—it’s okay.

The other card you sent me with the colorfully clad gal drinking on a ledge was neat too…but what should it remind me of (?).  Oh…so it was January 3rd (your Birthday), huh?   Well, here’s your belated 1991 Birthday Card.  Better late than never…don’t forget May 26, 1991 now!
Very funny…I don’t shop at CARTIER or any shops on Rodeo Drive.  I do go to the IL FORNAIO or CAFÉ RODEO for breakfast sometimes.  My most frequented store in Beverly Hills is the THRIFTY DRUG STORE!  Ha-ha.  It’s true though.  I can also park there for forty-five minutes for free.
Last week was a star week for me.  I saw two major stars.  I saw JOAN COLLINS.  She was doing a book signing for her new book.  She signed it “Love to Michael –Joan Collins”.   And two days later I walked out of my building to get a newspaper at the local book store and guess who was crossing the street.  ROB LOWE.  He looked right at me and was parked on the street I live on (Palm Ave).  He drove off in a fancy charcoal gray Porsche.  He was probably coming out of CAROLCO PICTURES (their building is right across the street from me).  CAROLCO did all of the RAMBO and TERMINATOR movies (with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This coming March 25th I may see more celebrities because SPAGO (the restaurant that is famous for the Academy Awards after-party) is right across the street from me.  This year I’ll take my camera and take pictures.  Maybe I’ll get a picture of Girard Depardieu (if he is there).  I know…you don’t care for him much (neither do I).  He seems funny in the movie GREEN CARD.  He was very likable in that movie.
Please watch SILENCE OF THE LAMBS starring Jodie Foster.   It’s a good one!
That’s nice that your mom is no longer working and visiting you.  My mom just came to visit me last weekend and we had a good time.   I took her out to dinner.   I miss her.
You are so funny!   When you were sixteen years old you went out with a 30-year old man!   Jeez…I’m going to look for those sixteen year olds to do me a favor!  Ha-ha.  It is funny how you are “32” now.  Why can’t you write that number?  Yes, “32”!  I am getting obnoxious now aren’t I?   Well, I love you anyway.  You look “25” to me. I wish I could just snap my fingers and be in FRANCE right now.  I really miss you.  I think –in time—I will see you again.  Perhaps we will spend a lot of time together again.   Who knows?   I’m just glad we haven’t parted as friends because we’ve created a very special bond since Halloween 1983.   Jeez…on Halloween 1993 it will be “10” years (our 10-year reunion).
Alan has business in New York and I’ve arranged a round-trip for me to go too.  I have enough mileage air miles accumulated to do so.   On March 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st I will be in New York City.  I will MOST definitely send you a postcard or two!
Work?  No.  I am not working yet.  The job I was getting at that design studio did NOT happen.  He was going to call me in a couple of weeks.  So…right now I am doing some freelance work for a brochure design for an apartment building.  I have a second interview tomorrow for a CREATIVE DIRECTOR position with some Home Publishing Magazine.  It’s one of those magazines that informs everyone what residential homes are for sale.  It’s not very exciting but I need some sort of income (for a while anyway).
I am still painting.  I got some more canvases and I start an acrylic painting class on April 4th for ten weeks on Thursday nights.  It ought to be fun.Is this you working out?  Or now that you’re “32” don’t you work out this much of a sweat?  Ha-ha.  You’re going to slap me for that one.Later…Love You,MichaelP.S.  Love to Jonathan…Hello to Alexandre and your mom, etc.
March 23rd…Birda wrote to me in her beautiful handwriting.  It warms my heart that she thinks of me…still.  I do miss our bike riding.   We wouldn’t even schedule bike ride meets in Alameda.   We just knew how and when to find one another.   I miss her.  And with a black felt pen she wrote the following:
March 23, 1991Michael,It’s Saturday and it’s raining puppies and kittens.  It’s like what can you do on rainy days except write to a friend…
Things haven’t changed much.  Plans still go to hell whenever I make them.  I am still off from work and it gets crazier by the day.  The doctor gave me some kind of shot in the back yesterday.  The muscles are very sore today.  He said I might be back to work in about two weeks.  In the meantime it is exercise, ride the bike and be bored. Now the questions.   How are you?  How is the working world?  Have you been riding in between raindrops?   What are you doing around your birthday?  Not that I’m trying to make plans.   Would you like to?  How do they say in Hollywood?  Do dinner?   I know its two months in advance but think about it and let me know.
I have a vacation coming up so it gives me a week to set aside at least two or three days to get me there and back.  If you help with the plan it might work.Let’s see what gives us…2 months of RIDING, EXERCISE, NO HERSHEYS, NO OREOS, NO SMOKING (it’s working—kind of)…to have the race.   Write Soon.   See Ya,  Birda

Hide And Go Seek

Lack of LOVE, of meaning, of confidence in ones self, and the absence of a clear direction in their lives weigh so heavily that it sometimes leads them to self-destruction.   These extreme actions are a cry of despair, a call for help, a way of self-expression of those who do not know how to find happiness, or who have been prevented from doing so by the brutality of external conditions.--Matthieu Ricard, ALTRUISM
It’s funny.  As I found myself re-reading Dorothy Rua’s postcards from last week her line about wanting to “get on a plane and go somewhere” stuck in my mind.   A part of me believes that those who are always flying somewhere are running away from something.  Why not just stay put?  At times I’d much rather experience a new movie for escape.  It’s almost like taking a trip.
This coming March 15th has a series of films opening and I am interested is seeing all of them:  CLASS ACTION, GUILTY BY SUSPICIOUN, IF LOOKS COULD KILL, THE PERFECT WEAPON and TRUE COLORS.  I know I will see them all but not all at once.   There just aren’t enough hours to escape all of the time.

I managed to find the time though.  Alan and I were able to see all of the aforementioned films this week except for THE PERFECT WEAPON.  It’s hard to say which one is best because I’m still living off of the ultimate excitement ride of LA FEMME NIKITA.
I have my new stationary and business cards for MICHAEL’s INNOVATION IN DESIGN.  I love the design I did with simplicity and turquoise blue.   I plan to write to Paloma and on the stationary and send her a business card.  I just feel like I’m in a black hole though.  There are no Graphic Design opportunities coming my way.   There is a Creative Director Job with some Home Publication Magazine but who knows if I will have a chance.  I sent my resume.   I may have to try a new path as a Plan “B”.
And then another part of me wants to run away and go back to the CAESARS PALACE with Alan.  Sometimes it is fun to hide and just “play”.   Hide And Go Seek brings on a whole new meaning.
On March 14th I attended a book signing of her latest novel called LOVE AND DESIRE AND HATE.  I took MOM with me.  It was fun.  She signed my book, “LOVE TO MICHAEL, Joan Collins!”  It was rather surreal to see her in-person after knowing her as that evil vixen, Alexis Carrington.  She seemed rather nice in-person.
I do have another trip planned with Alan.   We are going to New York City again from March 28th through March 31st.   I’m excited about that because there are endless things to do in that city.
On the side, I find myself painting at home.  I do like to create.  It calms me.  It allows me to calmly think of things that will guide me on to my next pathway (especially when I take a break from the canvas and hear music).   I especially like the one by CLASH called SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO.   A part of me yearns to return to the Bay Area, find an apartment in Berkeley.   When I mention it to Alan he shudders and tries to encourage me to stay.

Alan says, “This is where dreams are made.  Wait and see.  You’ll find something, Michael.”And so, I must remain “balanced”.   I can’t hide under a rock.  If I don’t let THEM know that I’m here, they will never know about me.   I am lucky that I can vent my verbal feelings with my mother and Alan.  My written words also help me in my letter exchanges with Paloma, Dorothy and Birda.
He had to vent his anger somehow and he did it in words.--Eka Kurniawan, MAN TIGER

I Want To Get On A Plane and Go Somehwhere

He is endeavoring, perhaps for the first time, to understand himself and the meaning of life.--Ben Macintyre, AGENT ZIGZAG
I’m so excited to see this new French Film that is finally reaching the USA.  Paloma has insisted I see it.I already informed Alan, “We HAVE TO see this move.  Paloma says it’s so good!” I know it’s an action-thriller which is right up my alley.  I love those edge-of-your-seat exciting dramatic suspenseful films.  Luc Besson is the director and he is beginning to have quite a reputation in film in France (and the world) because of this movie.   It opens on March 8th here and Alan and I will be first in line at the box-office.

Last week I replied to one of Paloma’s recent letters.  She must have received it by now.  Here is what I wrote:
February 22, 1991Friday, 10:00AMDear Paloma:No, I didn’t move to Beverly Hills.  However, Beverly Hills is only two blocks from West Hollywood and I sometimes get mail addressed Los Angeles, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills.  The important part is the zip code which is 90069…and if you write the new additional four digit code (90069-4005) it even helps the mail get delivered faster.  Anyway, this is the new business stationery I designed at Graphic Design School (logo, business card, envelope and letterhead).  What do you think?  Well, it doesn’t’ matter because I like it.  Ha-ha.
How have you been?  I received your four GREAT cards yesterday and was very pleased to hear from you.  You had never sent me that bike card before…it is great!   The famous knives were interesting.  Why are they famous?  I also loved the little alley in Languedoc (beautiful).  The big card was cool, kind of 1950’s.

Believe me; I understand the NOT writing often bit.  It’s hard.  It has been especially difficult for me with school and all.  The good news is that I finished the night school on February 19th…so I’m free again on weekday nights!  It’s great.  Now I have to get an internship of some sort.   There is a place called DAZU that is supposed to call me any minute.  I will work for them for 3 weeks (no pay) for the experience.  They do all of the movie posters.  If they hired me on a permanent basis it would be great but I understand they already have a full staff.  Oh well…the experience of being around it would be good.
I’m also working on a brochure to show my Graphic Artwork and hopefully get some freelance jobs.  As soon as my brochure is ready I will send you one.  I am working on taking the photos right now.  So it may not be for a few weeks.
I guess I do like BLACK and WHITE a lot but the card you sent me with the guy on the bike is especially cool because it was BLACK and WHITE with pink on the flowers.  I like those the best.  It reminds me of a card I saw recently of a guy and a girl (rear views) in BLACK and WHITE and yet their jeans were blue.  I love BLACK and WHITE with one other color.
Thanks for the warning about the Cyrano de Bergerac.  I won’t go see the film then.  I never saw CAMILLE CLAUDEL wither but I wanted to see it.  It’s on video now and I was thinking of renting it.  If you say it is BORING I will pass because it’s even thought to see a boring one on video versus at the theater.
I can’t say I have heard of Gilad Janklowicz but if it takes him to get you into shape…GREAT!   Although, your body looked extraordinarily HOT the last time I saw you (which was less than a year ago).  But then, I guess you could have really porked-out into someone LARGE by now.  Ha-ha…only kidding.
Yesterday from 3:30 to 4:40pm I was jogging on a private beach in MALIBU.  It was so refreshing and I love it because hardly anyone goes there.  I’d rather run along the beach with my headphones and not a large audience.  I want to drive over there today but I’m expecting a guy, Sam, to call me about that internship.
I also had an interview with AD GROUP, INC., in Los Angeles and she seemed to like me and she may call me also.  I hope something comes along because funds are low.Wow.  Monica!  I haven’t heard about her in a while.  She’s still in HAWAII, huh?  Well, I’m single too and I am loving it.  I do go through periods of NOT wanting to be single though.  Maybe I’ll marry when I’m 35 or 45.  Those are still good ages and I’ll still be in good shape and I can grasp onto some HOT 25 year old bombshell.  Ha-ha.
The war is a scary thing right now.  I’m just glad I really don’t know anyone who’s out there.  There is no one in my immediate family out there.  I know of a few friends of friends who have relatives in the war but that’s it.  They won’t draft me because I’m too old.   I really don’t have a lot to worry about.  And this Saddam Hussein crazed idiot ought to let up soon otherwise his ass is grass.
My mom is coming to visit over St. Patrick’s Day weekend on March 16th and 17th.   It will be nice to see her.  I always take her to a cool restaurant and we have a good time.
Your reunion with your cousin sounded nice.  It’s really great to rekindle an old family friendship.  You should really feel lucky about that fact.
My friend, Alan that came with me to FRANCE is doing okay.  I still talk to him regularly and we are good friends.  His wife gives him trouble now and again.  He is going through a divorce.  He has two daughters that he has on Thursday and Sunday nights.  His business has its ‘ups and downs’ to.  He and his real estate partner were going to buy that Movie Poster business a couple of years ago.  He’s the one that gave me the lead as to who to contact about getting on there in graphic design.  Of course, it’s too early to tell what will happen and it still seems kind of flaky (or shady) to me.I just called Sam at DAZU (the movie poster place) and he said, “We are in the middle of a presentation right now.”I replied, “Okay, I will be here until noon.  If I’m not here please feel free to leave a message on my machine.”It only takes a minute to tell me when to report to work.   What a creep!  I hate to be strung along.  I told him I’d only be here until noon because I want to go running on the beach again.  It’s really my favorite place to escape and unwind.
You know, I’ve lived in the LA area for a little over a year now and there is a PALOMA STREET right on Venice Beach.  I’ve been wanting to take a picture of that sign with me under it for the longest time.  I’ll try and make a point of doing it very soon.  Oh well, I will cut this short for now.  Just know my thoughts are with you.  Give my hello and regards to Alexandre.  And a hug and kiss for Jonathan.Always, Love,Michael

In addition, I mailed Paloma a CAESARS PALACE, Las Vegas postcard.  I wrote:
March 1, 1991Hi Paloma,Alan and I managed an escape weekend from LA to LAS VEGAS.  Maybe I’ll get lucky…who knows?  We just had dinner.   We drank a bottle of DOMAIN du CAYRON GIGONDAS which was quite good.  I start an internship as a Graphic Design Artist at a design studio in Beverly Hills for a couple of weeks.   Then I will be on the lookout for another more permanent job in the field.  My beginning acrylics painting class at UCLA starts in April.Later,
Love, Michael
March 6thDorothy Rua sent me a trio of Black and White postcards in one envelope.   I almost thought it was from Paloma because it’s something she would do.  I guess I did send Dorothy a few postcards so that’s probably how she picked up the idea.  Of course, Paloma is the one who gave me the idea to send more than one card in an envelope.  Paloma is the ultimate in creativity in-my-book. She sent a 1988 postcard photo of actress Michelle Pfeiffer (photographed by Greg Gorman); another of a couple kissing on a Florida beach in 1988 (photographed by Pamela Hanson); another Sci-Fi looking one from 1970 titled “FROM THE SOMNAMBULIST” (photographed by Ralph Gibson).  I absolutely loved all three of them.  She wrote:
Hi Michael,Here are the only Black and White postcards I could find and so now you have a set. By now you are home from Las Vegas.  You mailed my postcard on Saturday and I got it on Monday!  Fast service!  It may have been a picture of a hotel but I like it!   I like the colors and it IS CAESARS HOTEL, the best as you say.  I even put it up at my desk which is something I don’t often do.
I’m really excited to hear you started an internship this week.  I will want all the details!  Maybe it will be what you want and you can grow with it.  Good luck!
Yes, a weekend in L.A. would truly be rand.  I would love to share so many of the places you’ve told me about…especially the ocean, the art galleries and restaurants!
Without going into detail I’m still not sure how to pull it off.   It’s mainly because I’m trying to resolve some things here and haven’t been able to yet.  A visit is still something I very much want to do.  I do plan to make it happen.  I hope you’re doing well.
It’s pretty sad when even Oakland looks good.   I was seated in a restaurant with a friend and overheard a guy who bought a plane ticket to L.A. for early April who plans to pick-up and move there to become a Private-Eye!
Then there’s MIKE, one of my managers, who left for Mexico last Friday, then heads on to EQUADOR this week!  I can’t stand it.   I want to get on a plane and go somewhere.  Maybe I have to stay in one place for a while because I did so much traveling in prior years and someone feels I’ve used up all of my allotted travel time?   It’s a bit off the wall, huh?  Oh well, LIFE always brings new forks in the road (perhaps interesting ones).
I may head up to LAKE TAHOE later this month.  They sure are getting a lot of snow these days.  I wouldn’t mind putting on some skis and falling down a few hills.  Plus…there’s always BOBBY D (music man) at CAESARS!  Have you been to the ocean/beach lately?
There’s so much more involved than getting on the plane.  The full story may be shared as we rock in those chairs on that white veranda porch.   Well, I can dream, right?  And some dreams come true!
Have you had any interesting job opportunities come into your life lately?  Are you still direcdting yourself into the creative field?  I feel you should continue to try getting a foot in that door.  You do have the talent.

How are things going with your friend, Alan?  Has he been able to wrap up things with real estate?  He was going to move, right?  Or are you guys too busy planning your next trip?  Where to?  What do the cards show?  Share your thoughts.  I’m interested.By the way, where is that picture of you and Alan in New York?  That’s really one wonderful trip you had.  If you have it…send it on over, okay?  Later, LOVE, DOROTHY

March 8thWhat can I say?  I love love LA FEMME NIKITA.  Where did this tough girl come from:  Anne Parillaud.   I’d be lying if I said she didn’t remind me of Paloma.  She did.  Paloma could have played the part.  Paloma could have been a top secret spy too (just like James Bond, 007).  It was double-feature night for Alan and I.   We also saw NEW JACK CITY, starring Wesley Snipes.  It was rough around the edges but also quite suspenseful.  LA FEMME NIKITA won the award for the night.  It was one superb thriller.  A movie like this really gets my brain moving, yearning and wanting something fresh and exciting in my life.
An X-ray of my skull would have shown a hamster running furiously in an exercise wheel, trying to generate ideas.--Viet Thanh Nguyen, THE SYMPATHIZER, a Pulitzer Prize winning novel
