Nehemiah 8:5-8
5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:
6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.
8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
Jeremiah 3
1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.
2 And though they say, The Lord liveth; surely they swear falsely.
3 O Lord, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the Lord, nor the judgment of their God.
5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the Lord, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.
6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.
7 How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
8 They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife.
9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the Lord’s.
11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the Lord.
12 They have belied the Lord, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.
14 Wherefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the Lord: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.
16 Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.
17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.
18 Nevertheless in those days, saith the Lord, I will not make a full end with you.
19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the Lord our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not your’s.
20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
22 Fear ye not me? saith the Lord: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.
24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the Lord our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.
26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.
28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30 A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;
31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary
Commentary on Jeremiah 5:1-9
None could be found who behaved as upright and godly men. But the Lord saw the true character of the people through all their disguises. The poor were ignorant, and therefore they were wicked. What can be expected but works of darkness, from people that know nothing of God and religion? There are God’s poor, who, notwithstanding poverty, know the way of the Lord, walk in it, and do their duty; but these were willingly ignorant, and their ignorance would not be their excuse. The rich were insolent and haughty, and the abuse of God’s favours made their sin worse.
Commentary on Jeremiah 5:10-18
Multitudes are ruined by believing that God will not be so strict as his word says he will; by this artifice Satan undid mankind. Sinners are not willing to own any thing to be God’s word, that tends to part them from, or to disquiet them in, their sins. Mocking and misusing the Lord’s messengers, filled the measure of their iniquity. God can bring trouble upon us from places and causes very remote. He has mercy in store for his people, therefore will set bounds to this desolating judgment. Let us not overlook the “nevertheless,” verse 18. This is the Lord’s covenant with Israel. He thereby proclaims his holiness, and his utter displeasure against sin while sparing the sinner, Psalm 89:30-35.
Commentary on Jeremiah 5:19-31
Unhumbled hearts are ready to charge God with being unjust in their afflictions. But they may read their sin in their punishment. If men will inquire wherefore the Lord doeth hard things unto them, let them think of their sins. The restless waves obeyed the Divine decree, that they should not pass the sandy shores, which were as much a restraint as lofty mountains; but they burst all restraints of God’s law, and were wholly gone into wickedness. Neither did they consider their interest. While the Lord, year after year, reserves to us the appointed weeks of harvest, men live on his bounty; yet they transgress against him. Sin deprives us of God’s blessings; it makes the heaven as brass, and the earth as iron. Certainly the things of this world are not the best things; and we are not to think, that, because evil men prosper, God allows their practices. Though sentence against evil works is not executed speedily, it will be executed. Shall I not visit for these things? This speaks the certainty and the necessity of God’s judgments. Let those who walk in bad ways consider that an end will come, and there will be bitterness in the latter end.

18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.

In our last message, we talked about the deliberate departure of Jesus Christ from the crowds and the fame that He could have so easily reveled in. By His example, we see how Christian leaders ought to conduct themselves, knowing that, if they truly follow Christ, they will not be friends of the world, nor will they gain the fame and accolades of those celebrated by the world.
Despite the way He shunned fame, Jesus still had many who, at least on the surface, expressed a desire to follow Him. Such a person, identified as “a certain scribe,” comes to Him in this passage and says, “Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.” We don’t know exactly what drove this scribe to declare his desire to follow Jesus. Perhaps, the healing miracles and casting out of devils had something to do with it. However, in light of what we have discussed already, Charles Spurgeon wondered if, perhaps, this scribe saw joining Jesus’ little band as a career move for himself. Spurgeon said, “I wonder if this man thought, ‘Well, now, I am a scribe. If I join that company, I shall be a leader. I perceive that they are only fishermen, the bulk of them; and if I come in amongst them, I shall be a great acquisition to that little band. I shall no doubt be the secretary.’ Perhaps he may have thought that there was something to be made out of such a position.”
Jesus, of course, knew the heart of this man. He knew whether he was making a sincere request or not. Jesus does not respond to the man’s question with a negative or positive answer. Instead, He describes the reality of what following Him means. Jesus says, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” D.A. Carson notes, “In the immediate context of Jesus’ ministry, the saying does not mean that Jesus was penniless but homeless; the nature of his mission kept him on the move and would keep his followers on the move.”
Jesus did not place stock in having a fine house to live in. He was the Son of God, and surely He deserved a palatial residence. He could have even, with a word, sprung a castle for Himself out of the Judean wilderness. But Jesus’ mission was not to live like a king here on earth. His mission was to declare the arrival of the kingdom of God, and that required mobility. Of course, the homes of others, like Peter, were open to him, but Jesus did not seek such security for himself. There were likely many mornings when Jesus’ disciples woke up and did not know where they would sleep that night.
Like the scribe, we must count the cost of following Christ. And Jesus did not hide that cost from us. If personal security is more important to us than the kingdom of God. We will not be effective disciples unless we are also willing to serve God without knowing where we might lay our heads each night.
William Cushing writes:
Down in the valley with my Savior I would go,
Where the flowers are blooming and the sweet waters flow;
Everywhere He leads me I would follow, follow on,
Walking in His footsteps till the crown be won.
Down in the valley with my Savior I would go,
Where the storms are sweeping and the dark waters flow;
With His hand to lead me I will never, never fear,
Dangers cannot fright me if my Lord is near.
Down in the valley, or upon the mountain steep,
Close beside my Savior would my heart ever keep;
He will lead me safely in the path that He has trod,
Up to where they gather in the rest of God.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

44 Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter.
45 Thou art thy mother’s daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which lothed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite.
46 And thine elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.
47 Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.
48 As I live, saith the Lord God, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters.
49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

This is an uncomfortable subject for many of us, but if you listen and take heed, this particular series can not only change your life spiritually, but it can save your life physically.
In this passage, Israel is rebuked by God for engaging in some of the same sins that led to the abomination of homosexuality which led to the destruction of Sodom many years prior. One of those sins was gluttony, “a fullness of bread,” an abuse of the Lord’s abundant supply and provision. Their pride led to their over-confidence in their provisions which led to the sin of gluttony. Because all their needs were supplied, they grew haughty and failed to remember where their blessings had come from. They placed their trust in the supply, not the Supplier.
Gluttony also led to “an abundance of idleness.” The abundance of Sodom’s provisions and the relative ease by which they gained their food and supplies led many to grow idle. They felt like they did not have to work. They spent their days feasting and pleasure-seeking, running from one party to the next, pursuing only the gratification of the flesh.
Their gluttonous mindset also led to a lack of concern for the poor and needy. Millions in America will feast today without a single thought for the many around the globe who don’t have basic food staples, much less a feast. We are so stuffed that we throw away food that we don’t want — food that others would count as a luxury. We demand certain brands and a certain level of quality in food production while millions would be grateful for our so-called “food waste.”
There are many good things that God wants us to take advantage of, and His provision of food is one of those things. However, He does not want us to abuse His supply and use it as a means by which we become proud, arrogant, indulgent, lazy, and insensitive to those who are in need, thinking to ourselves that we can receive good things from the Lord and not be punished for evil behavior.
If the Lord tarries his coming and we live, next time, we will continue looking at what the Bible tells us about overcoming gluttony, obesity, and God’s plan for man’s eating habits.

PRACTICAL STEP: In “The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle,” Mike Anderson continues sharing the importance of exercise as a part of your dietary changes. He writes, “Humans are naturally lazy because we’re programmed to conserve energy. In the past, we were forced to exercise to find food and there was a balance between the calories expended to locate or farm food and the calories we consumed. Today, we have created an incredibly artificial living environment that’s also designed to conserve energy. The result is that many Americans are so inactive they’re practically living their lives in bed rest! Humans in industrialized countries are very much like caged birds, but in our case we’re caged in our chairs and couches. Despite our technical advances, we’re still trapped in Stone Age bodies and those bodies need to be exercised — just as faithfully as they are fed every day.
“The best incentive to exercise is that it simply makes you feel wonderful and alive! But if you need an immediate reason to exercise, here’s one you can’t resist — you’ll enjoy a much better sex life!”

In closing, as we focus on overcoming the sin of gluttony, and managing our bodies as God intended, we must not lose sight of the most important part of our existence — our spiritual life. Even those of you who are fit, who eat right, and who exercise regularly must still address the condition of your soul. You may keep your body in perfect condition till the day you die, but you will still die — we all will, and the only thing that will matter is the condition of your soul. Is your soul in shape? Is your soul in right standing with God?
The only way to make sure of that is to trust Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and the consequences of sin. He alone can save your soul, put you in right standing with God, and ensure that you do not perish in Hell. Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, here is how you can trust Him today.

Jeremiah 3
1 If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the Lord, return unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove.
2 And thou shalt swear, The Lord liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.
3 For thus saith the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

An unhumbled heart is like ground untilled. It is ground which may be improved; it is our ground let out to us; but it is fallow; it is over-grown with thorns and weeds, the natural product of the corrupt heart. Let us entreat the Lord to create in us a clean heart, and to renew a right spirit within us; for except a man be born again, he cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Commentary on Jeremiah 4:5-18
The fierce conqueror of the neighbouring nations was to make Judah desolate. The prophet was afflicted to see the people lulled into security by false prophets. The approach of the enemy is described. Some attention was paid in Jerusalem to outward reformation; but it was necessary that their hearts should be washed, in the exercise of true repentance and faith, from the love and pollution of sin. When lesser calamities do not rouse sinners and reform nations, sentence will be given against them. The Lord’s voice declares that misery is approaching, especially against wicked professors of the gospel; when it overtakes them, it will be plainly seen that the fruit of wickedness is bitter, and the end is fatal.
Commentary on Jeremiah 4:19-31
The prophet had no pleasure in delivering messages of wrath. He is shown in a vision the whole land in confusion. Compared with what it was, every thing is out of order; but the ruin of the Jewish nation would not be final. Every end of our comforts is not a full end. Though the Lord may correct his people very severely, yet he will not cast them off. Ornaments and false colouring would be of no avail. No outward privileges or profession, no contrivances would prevent destruction. How wretched the state of those who are like foolish children in the concerns of their souls! Whatever we are ignorant of, may the Lord make of good understanding in the ways of godliness. As sin will find out the sinner, so sorrow will, sooner or later, find out the secure.

LISTEN: Why I Thank God for My Imperfect, “Functional” Family
Daniel Whyte IIIJOSHUA 24:15: “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
We hear a lot about dysfunctional families in the popular discourse of the day. They are a staple of movies, TV shows, and books. The dysfunctional family is so prevalent that it might be considered the norm. And with extended families gathering all across this country on Thanksgiving Day, that dysfunction is anecdotally at an all time high. According to Merriam-Webster, the word “dysfunctional” means: “not functioning properly; marked by impaired or abnormal functioning; characterized by abnormal or unhealthy interpersonal behavior or interaction.”
However, dysfunction does not have to be the norm, especially for Christian families. I am thankful today that my family, while not perfect by any means, is at least functional. My wife and I have been together for thirty years and we have seven children. We’re not perfect; we are all sinners. But, by the grace of God, we have for many years been a functional Christian family that has worked together in the service of Christ and his Church. We are marking our 30th Thanksgiving together this year, and we are also celebrating the publishing of ten books about Thanksgiving and gratitude.
1. I am thankful for the mercy and grace of God in my imperfect, but functional family. It does take a lot to live in community with other sinful human beings. We often buy into the lie that our wife, our husband, our children ought to be angelic, a far cry from the horror stories we hear about in the news of domestic violence, neglectful parents, and depressed children. But the truth is that your family is likely as messy as they come because each and every member — from the brand-new infant to the most gray-haired great-grandparent — is a stone-cold sinner with a desperately wicked heart. Only the mercy and grace of God can help a bunch of sinful human beings co-exist relatively peacefully in the same house for any length of time. And that mercy and grace is available to you in spades through Jesus Christ. God’s mercies are new every morning; and, living in any family, you will need it that frequently.
2. I am thankful for my imperfect, functional family having a purpose to live for. Rick Warren has written the books, The Purpose Driven Church and The Purpose Driven Life. I think he or someone ought to write The Purpose Driven Family. Every Christian family ought to be engaged in some kind of eternal purpose that is in service of God, the local Church, the local community, and the Church universal. My family has helped me in the ministry ever since our children were young. Having a purpose that goes beyond your family life and interpersonal relationships will help you weather the abundance of storms that will come your way.
3. I am thankful for my imperfect, functional family because it is a training ground for the future. Inevitably, in any family, children will grow up and family members will grow apart (geographically, at least). Many parents make the mistake of trying to cling to the family as it has always been (and, in this day and time, we have many young adults who try to do the same thing). But, it is perfectly natural for family members to launch out on their own and walk the specific path that God has for them. They are not abandoning the family, because no matter how much one tries, you never truly can do that. Instead the experiences, lessons, and discipline that each member learned while in the family will shape them for the future. Yes, there is friction in families, but friction is not always a bad thing. Friction is often a sign of function in families as when “iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another,” helping them prepare for the future.
Your family, like mine, isn’t perfect. But, through Jesus Christ and the principles found in the Bible, your family can be functional and bring glory to God by demonstrating his mercy and grace and fulfilling the Gospel-focused purpose that He has for you.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 325 messages in this series.
This is message #326 titled, How to Pray for the Good and Faithful Saints That You Don’t Know, Part 7.
Over the past few messages, we have looked at the specific prayer requests that Paul made for the believers in Colosse. He prayed for them: (1) to have the “knowledge of God’s will”; (2) to walk worthy of their salvation; and (3) to be “fruitful in every good work.” In his next request in verse 10, he prays that, by being fruitful in every good work, they would ‘increase in the knowledge of God.’
We typically get it backwards. We think that we need to gain knowledge and grow in knowledge before we can be fruitful in every good work. However, the truth of the matter is that most of us already know the simple things that we need to do. We know from years of Bible reading, church attendance, and sermon hearing that we ought to pray, meditate on the Word, and witness to others. We often use a lack of knowledge as an excuse for a lack of obedience. However, Paul prays for the believers to know God’s will, to walk worthy of their salvation, to be fruitful in good works, and then to grow in the knowledge of God.
Albert Barnes says that growing in the knowledge of God is “another way in which we may walk worthy of the Lord in order to please him. Growing in the knowledge of God is endeavoring to become better acquainted with his true character. God is pleased with those who desire to understand what He is; what He does; what He purposes; and what He commands. Hence, He not only commands us to study his works, but He has made a world so beautiful as to invite us to contemplate His perfections as reflected in that world. All good beings desire that others should understand their character, and God delights in those who are sincerely desirous of knowing who He is, and who inquire with humility and reverence into His counsels and His will. People are often displeased when others attempt to look into their plans, for they are sensible that they will not bear the light of investigation. God has no plans which would not be seen to be, in the highest degree, glorious to Him.”
God is a mystery, not because He chooses to be, but because the human mind cannot comprehend Him. In Scripture, God invited man into communion with Him as much as possible. Moses desired to see God’s face, and God would have granted that request except for the fact that it would have killed Moses, for “no man can see God and live.” So, God allowed Moses to see His backside. The New Testament is the account of God revealing Himself to man through Jesus Christ. He is not hiding from us, and we do not have to “find” Him. He knows us and He wants us to know Him.
Prayer is one way we get to know God. In prayer, we talk to God as if we are talking to a friend. We learn things about Him as He speaks to our hearts and through His Word in our individual circumstances. He reveals Himself to us as we grow more mature and are increasingly able to grasp His revelation of Himself. Getting to know God is the pursuit of eternity. In these finite forms, we will never fully know Him — and, in eternity, we may well-nigh drown in His fathomless depths — but we ought to start growing in the knowledge of our Creator now. And we ought to pray for others to do the same.

LISTEN: The Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony #93 (A Message for the Church, with Daniel Whyte III)

Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

This is an uncomfortable subject for many of us, but if you listen and take heed, this particular series can not only change your life spiritually, but it can save your life physically.
Sodom is colloquially known as the hotbed of homosexuality that the Lord judged in the day of Abraham. However, this passage reveals that there were many other sins rampant in that city that helped lead to its destruction — so much so that God used Sodom as an example to Israel (even calling the abominable city Israel’s “sister” despite the fact that homosexuality does not seem to have ever been a problem in Israel). It was never addressed as one of Israel’s sins.
Among the sins, the “iniquity,” of Sodom was gluttony. The inhabitants of the city had a “fulness of bread.” As we learned in a previous message the Hebrew word usually translated as “bread” in the KJV can also be used to mean fruits, vegetables, and meats. The Hebrew word translated as “fulness” is only used here in Scripture and it means filled to the point of satisfaction of satiety. The people of Sodom ate until the leaned back in their seats, sighed, and said, “I’m stuffed.”
John Gill points out that “the land of Sodom was very fruitful before it was destroyed. Genesis 3:10 says it was ‘like the garden of the Lord.’ It brought forth plentifully so that there was great fulness of provision and of all sorts of food (which is what is meant by the term ‘bread’). This, by itself, was not sinful, but a blessing. It was a show of the Lord’s mercy and goodness to them that they had such plenty. But it was their sin that they abused it with luxury and intemperance, and eating and drinking to excess, which led on to that sin, and kindled the flames of it, and were the fuel to it, which has its name from them. Besides this, the fulness of good things they enjoyed became a source of pride.”
There are many good things that God wants us to take advantage of, and His provision of food is one of those things. However, He does not want us to abuse His supply and use it as a means by which we become proud, arrogant, and indulgent, thinking to ourselves that we can receive good things from the Lord and not be punished for evil behavior.
If the Lord tarries his coming and we live, next time, we will continue looking at what this passage tells us about overcoming gluttony, obesity, and God’s plan for man’s eating habits.

PRACTICAL STEP: In “The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle,” Mike Anderson continues sharing the importance of exercise as a part of your dietary changes. He writes, “Humans are naturally lazy because we’re programmed to conserve energy. In the past, we were forced to exercise to find food and there was a balance between the calories expended to locate or farm food and the calories we consumed. Today, we have created an incredibly artificial living environment that’s also designed to conserve energy. The result is that many Americans are so inactive they’re practically living their lives in bed rest! Humans in industrialized countries are very much like caged birds, but in our case we’re caged in our chairs and couches. Despite our technical advances, we’re still trapped in Stone Age bodies and those bodies need to be exercised — just as faithfully as they are fed every day.
“The best incentive to exercise is that it simply makes you feel wonderful and alive! But if you need an immediate reason to exercise, here’s one you can’t resist — you’ll enjoy a much better sex life!”

In closing, as we focus on overcoming the sin of gluttony, and managing our bodies as God intended, we must not lose sight of the most important part of our existence — our spiritual life. Even those of you who are fit, who eat right, and who exercise regularly must still address the condition of your soul. You may keep your body in perfect condition till the day you die, but you will still die — we all will, and the only thing that will matter is the condition of your soul. Is your soul in shape? Is your soul in right standing with God?
The only way to make sure of that is to trust Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and the consequences of sin. He alone can save your soul, put you in right standing with God, and ensure that you do not perish in Hell. Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, here is how you can trust Him today.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

Commentary on Jeremiah 2:1-8
(Read Jeremiah 2:1-8)
Those who begin well, but do not persevere, will justly be upbraided with their hopeful and promising beginnings. Those who desert religion, commonly oppose it more than those who never knew it. For this they could have no excuse. God’s spiritual Israel must own their obligations to him for safe conduct through the wilderness of this world, so dangerous to the soul. Alas, that many, who once appeared devoted to the Lord, so live that their professions aggravate their crimes! Let us be careful that we do not lose in zeal and fervency, as we gain knowledge.
Commentary on Jeremiah 2:9-13
Before God punishes sinners, he pleads with them, to bring them to repentance. He pleads with us, what we should plead with ourselves. Be afraid to think of the wrath and curse which will be the portion of those who throw themselves out of God’s grace and favour. Grace in Christ is compared to water from a fountain, it being cooling and refreshing, cleansing and making fruitful: to living water, because it quickens dead sinners, revives drooping saints, supports and maintains spiritual life, and issues in eternal life, and is ever-flowing. To forsake this Fountain is the first evil; this is done when the people of God neglect his word and ordinances. They hewed them out broken cisterns, that could hold no water. Such are the world, and the things in it; such are the inventions of men when followed and depended on. Let us, with purpose of heart, cleave to the Lord only; whither else shall we go? How prone are we to forego the consolations of the Holy Spirit, for the worthless joys of the enthusiast and hypocrite!
Commentary on Jeremiah 2:14-19
Is Israel a servant? No, they are the seed of Abraham. We may apply this spiritually: Is the soul of man a slave? No, it is not; but has sold its own liberty, and enslaved itself to divers lusts and passions. The Assyrian princes, like lions, prevailed against Israel. People from Egypt destroyed their glory and strength. They brought these calamities on themselves by departing from the Lord. The use and application of this is, Repent of thy sin, that thy correction may not be thy ruin. What has a Christian to do in the ways of forbidden pleasure or vain sinful mirth, or with the pursuits of covetousness and ambition?
Commentary on Jeremiah 2:20-28
Notwithstanding all their advantages, Israel had become like the wild vine that bears poisonous fruit. Men are often as much under the power of their unbridled desires and their sinful lusts, as the brute beasts. But the Lord here warns them not to weary themselves in pursuits which could only bring distress and misery. As we must not despair of the mercy of God, but believe that to be sufficient for the pardon of our sins, so neither must we despair of the grace of God, but believe that it is able to subdue our corruptions, though ever so strong.
Commentary on Jeremiah 2:29-37
The nation had not been wrought upon by the judgements of God, but sought to justify themselves. The world is, to those who make it their home and their portion, a wilderness and a land of darkness; but those who dwell in God, have the lines fallen to them in pleasant places. Here is the language of presumptuous sinners. The Jews had long thrown off serious thoughts of God. How many days of our lives pass without suitable remembrance of him! The Lord was displeased with their confidences, and would not prosper them therein. Men employ all their ingenuity, but cannot find happiness in the way of sin, or excuse for it. They may shift from one sin to another, but none ever hardened himself against God, or turned from him, and prospered.

How to Have True Hope in Horrific Times
There’s no doubt; we live in horrific times. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, and natural disasters are increasing in intensity, laying waste to lives and property. Millions of refugees around the world are fleeing war, terrorism, crime, and poverty. Governments are frozen in the grip of dysfunction. Society is polarized with hatred and animosity becoming par for the course. Social media has, for many, rendered real human relationships non-existent. Depression and anxiety are increasing as are suicide and crimes born out of desperation. It seems the authority structures of the world are stretched thin and the rest of the world is at its wits’ end.
It is easy to understand why so many feel hopeless. We look at the world and wonder, Will it get better? We work and pray and vote. But nothing seems to change.
Where can we look for true hope that is sustainable in horrific times? The only hope available to us is a hope that is not of this world. A hope that is in a Person — a Person who captures us with love and, if we believe in Him, will one day rapture us out of this world. The Person in whom we can find true hope is Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Savior of the World.

Some Misnomers About Hope
Believe it or not, many in the church who say they have hope do not have a biblical hope. They are confused or ignorant about what the Bible says they should place their hope in. Let’s look at some of these misconceptions.
Some people say, “I have hope in my salvation.” That sounds good, but that’s wrong. We do not have hope in our salvation because our salvation is a present possession. In John 5:24 we read, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” Jesus is speaking in the present tense. We don’t hope for salvation. Once we receive Jesus Christ into our lives, we already have salvation.
Some people say, “I have hope in eternal life.” In other words, I’m looking forward to death. If you have been walking with Christ for a while and you have seen the terrible effect of sin in this world, it is easy to begin to look forward to death. But death isn’t the hope of the Christian. Being released from this finite life and escaping the pain and suffering of this world is not what we look forward to. Death is simply the wages of sin. Death can’t be the hope of the believer because all believers are not going to die. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:51, “We shall not all sleep.” So, death is not our hope.
Some people say, “I have hope in Heaven.” But Heaven itself is not our hope either. Our hope is not a physical place. The Apostle Peter wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope…” Our hope is not a location. Peter goes on to say, “To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you.” Notice the words, “reserved in heaven.” Our hope is in Heaven, but it is not the place itself.
So, the church is not hoping for salvation; we already have that. The church is not hoping for death; simply, escaping this life is not what we’re looking for. And, the hope of the church is not Heaven; we are not looking forward to a place.
