LISTEN: How to Pray for the Good and Faithful Saints That You Don’t Know, Part 6 (Praying Through the Bible #325 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Colossians 1:1-14

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,

2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,

4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,

5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

7 As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ;

8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.

9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

— PRAYER —

We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 324 messages in this series.

This is message #325 titled, How to Pray for the Good and Faithful Saints That You Don’t Know, Part 6.

In our last message, we continued looking at the specific prayer requests that Paul made for the believers in Colosse. He prayed for them to (1) have the “knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding”; and (2) to walk worthy of their salvation in a manner that would be pleasing to the Lord. In his next request in verse 10, he continues the theme of this second point, praying that these believers would be “fruitful in every good work.”

Being fruitful or bearing fruit is a repeated metaphor in the gospels. Jesus said that those who truly follow Him will be a “fruitful vine,” and that is what Paul prays for here. When we bear fruit with our lives, we are ‘walking worthy’ of our salvation and ‘pleasing the Lord.’ While good works are not a requirement for salvation, they are a requirement for the life of a believer. The New Testament places a high value on what we do, not just what we believe. While our salvation and eternal destination is secure by our faith in Christ, we will be judged based on our works. Second Corinthians 5:10 says, “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive [reward or punishment for] the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”

Regarding this specific prayer request — that the believers would be “fruitful in every good work” — Dr. John MacArthur writes, “Fruitfulness also results from knowledge. Fruit is the by-product of righteousness. It is the mark of every redeemed individual. Jesus said in John 15:8, ‘By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciple.’ Paul told the Romans, ‘You also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, that we might bear fruit for God.’ The Bible defines fruit in various ways. Here Paul speaks of bearing fruit in every good work. Converts (those we win to the Lord) are referred to as fruit. Paul spoke of the household of Stephanas as the ‘first fruits of Achaia.’ He also desired some fruit among the Romans. Hebrews 13:15 defines praise as fruit: ‘Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.’ Giving money can also be fruit. Godly living is fruit, as indicated when the writer of Hebrews tells us that God’s discipline produces in us ‘the peaceful fruit of righteousness.’ Finally, the holy attitudes mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23 are referred to as ‘the fruit of the Spirit.'” These verses read, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

We all ought to pray for ourselves and for each other to be fruitful in every good work. Doing good work is not always easy. People will oppose you. The inertia of the flesh will drag on you. And the devil will try to trip you up by throwing temptation across your path. Know, however, that ‘these same afflictions are experienced by your brethren in the world.’ You are not alone. You need prayer for the accomplishing of good work. And your brothers and sisters in Christ around the world need prayer as well.

Ida C. Reid wrote:

Would you gain the victory over every sin?

Would you in each battle for your captain win?

Hide away with Jesus, yield not to despair;

Find your secret closet—He will meet you there.

Would you spend your lifetime in the Lord’s employ?

And the richest blessings from His hand enjoy?

Hide away with Jesus from the world of care;

Find your secret closet—He will meet you there.

Would you walk with Jesus in the narrow way?

Hear His faintest whisper when your feet would stray?

Hide away with Jesus from the tempter’s snare;

Find your secret closet—He will meet you there.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have done the most important thing in life. For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door, by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

LISTEN: The Story of Jesus Casting Out Many Devils and Healing Many Who Were Sick, or There’s a Devil Loose (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 599 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 966 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Matthew 8:14-17

14 And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever.

15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.

16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

——-

Matthew continues his account of Jesus’ ministry by telling us that the evening after Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law, many people brought their demon-possessed and sick relatives to the house where He was staying and He healed many of them. Obviously, after touching and healing the leper, speaking and healing the Centurion’s servant, and then healing one of his disciple’s relatives of a fever, word got around that this Jesus was not just an authoritative teacher and preacher, but a man of compassion and a man of action. (Many so-called preachers and teachers today are great public speakers, but they have no track record of action. Jesus was not that kind of preacher. He spoke and He acted.)

Dr. John MacArthur wrote in his commentary on Matthew: “After Jesus had healed the leper, the centurion’s slave boy, and Peter’s mother-in-law, Matthew reports that the crowd brought Him countless other people to be healed. Because these were brought to Him when evening had come, it is possible that the first three healings had been done on the Sabbath. Because of their religious leaders, many Jews were afraid to ask Jesus to heal on the Sabbath, and since it ended at sundown, they now felt free to bring many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill. As He had done before and many times afterward, Jesus here performed mass healings, without regard to individual faith or circumstances. Whether the problem was spiritual, as with the demon-possessed, or physical, as with those who were ill, He healed all. He was giving evidence of His deity and messiahship, and everyone who came for healing was healed. As mentioned in the previous chapter, for all practical purposes Jesus banished sickness and disease from Palestine during the course of His earthly ministry. ”

By casting out demons and healing diseases, Jesus rectified, in this temporal world, the cause and the effects of sin. The devil tempted Eve and instigated the Fall of the human race, introducing sin to all mankind. Demon-possession was and is an extension of Satan’s influence in the world. Jesus casting out devils by His word was a foreshadowing of how He would crush Satan’s head on the cross. In the Old Testament, we have no record of demons ever being cast out. In the multitude of Laws given in the Pentateuch, there is not one that instructs on how to cast out a devil. But, with Jesus’ arrival, this situation is rectified. Jesus casts out devils, and He gives His followers authority to cast out devils in His name as we see in the Book of Acts. This is symbolic of the fact that Satan no longer has control over the human race — and especially of those who have Christ living inside of them.

The continued healing of those who were sick removed one of the effects of sin from the life of those who were ill. Sickness and disease is a result of the Fall and sin’s entry into the world. In the New Heaven and New Earth where sin will be eradicated, the effects of sin will also be non-existent. Jesus was the living embodiment of the Kingdom of Heaven. Wherever He went, the Kingdom followed, and that is why Jesus healed so many. He was telling the world that the Sin-Cleanser, the Disease-Healer, the Kingdom-Bringer had arrived.

Today, Jesus is still taking on our infirmities, diseases, and sins. However, we must follow the example of the “many” in this passage and go to Him for healing and deliverance. And, if we have already been delivered, we should be in the business of bringing others to Him so they can be delivered from sin, the effects of sin, and the punishment of sin.

Anne Steele wrote:

Deep are the wounds that sin has made;

Where shall the sinner find a cure?

In vain, alas, is nature’s aid,

The work exceeds all nature’s power.

Sin like a raging fever reigns,

With fatal strength in every part;

The dire contagion fills the veins,

And spreads its poison to the heart.

And can no sovereign balm be found,

And is no kind physician nigh,

To ease the pain, and heal the wound,

Ere life and hope forever fly?

There is a great Physician near;

Look up, O fainting soul, and live;

See, in His heav’nly smiles appear

Such ease as nature cannot give!

See, in the dying Savior’s blood,

Life, health, and bliss, abundant flow!

‘Tis only this dear, sacred flood

Can ease thy pain, and heal thy woe.

Sin throws in vain its pointed dart,

For here a sovereign cure is found,

A cordial for the fainting heart,

A balm for every painful wound.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him.

I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! LISTEN: The Story of Peter’s Sick Mother-in-Law (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 598 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 965 since Jan.

——-

Now we come to the third record of Jesus healing someone in this passage. From the way these healing miracles are reported, it appears as though they all happened as Jesus and His disciples were on their way from the location of the Sermon on the Mount to Peter’s house in the city of Capernaum. First the leper met them and was healed, then the centurion met them and requested healing for his servant. Now, Jesus and His disciples are in Peter’s house where we find that Peter’s mother-in-law is sick.

The Evangelical Commentary On the Bible, edited by Walter A. Elwell, states, “[In these verses,] Jesus continues his healing ministry. By his touch, Jesus expels a fever, and by his word he drives out demons. In verse 17, Matthew does not restrict the prophecy of Isaiah to purely spiritual maladies. Yet the One who carries infirmities bears iniquities too; Jesus’ healing of diseases cannot be separated from his forgiveness of sins or from the death that secures forgiveness.”

Dr. Warren Wiersbe notes, “[Peter’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and Peter and Andrew [according to the parallel account in Mark] told Jesus about her need when they all arrived home after the synagogue service. Women did not hold a high position in Israel, and it is doubtful that a Pharisee would have paid much attention to the need in Peter’s home. Jesus healed her with a touch, and she responded by serving Him and the other men.”

The mention of Peter’s wife and his mother-in-law is significant. Throughout His ministry, Jesus tended to the needs and requests of women when any other religious leader would have passed them by. It is also significant because it undermines the Catholic Church’s establishment of celibacy as a requirement for its priests. This passage shows us that Peter, whom they claim their popes succeed, was married. In fact, tradition states that the only disciple who wasn’t married was John.

Jesus’ healing of Peter’s mother-in-law might seem “minor” when compared to the healing of the leper or the centurion’s servant. After all, she had a fever that would have likely passed in a few hours or just a day or two. However, it shows us that Jesus is concerned about what affects all of His creation, no matter how small it may seem.

Unlike the accounts of the two previous healings, this account shows us the aftermath of someone who has received healing from Jesus. Matthew writes, “She arose, and ministered unto them.” This reminds us that Jesus heals us not just to celebrate and revel in our blessings, but to turn around and minister to Him and for Him to others. Everyone we meet may not receive a miracle healing or miracle blessing, but God can use us to serve, bless, and comfort others we meet along the way.

Thomas Jervis wrote:

How vast is the tribute I owe

Of gratitude, homage, and praise

To God, who gives all I possess,

The life and the length of my days!

When sorrows I dreaded were come,

I poured out my sighs and my tears;

To Him, who alone can relieve,

My soul breathed my vows and my prayers.

Great source of my comforts restored!

Thou healer and balm of my woes!

Thou hope and desire of my soul!

Thy mercy no plague can oppose.

How boundless the gratitude due

To Thee, O Thou God of my praise!

The fountain of all I possess,

The life and the light of my days!

LISTEN: The Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony #90 (A Message for the Church, with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Proverbs 25:16:

Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

——-

This is an uncomfortable subject for many of us, but if you listen and take heed, this particular series can not only change your life spiritually, but it can save your life physically.

This proverb can be summarized with these words: “too much of a good thing is a bad thing.” It warns us against over-indulging in the good and pleasurable things of life. Honey is good. Honey is a healthy, natural food. Doctors have found that (raw) honey is a good source of antioxidants, it has antibacterial properties, it can heal wounds, it is filled with phytonutrients, and it can help with digestive issues. However, eating too much honey is a bad thing. Honey is high in fructose and carbohydrates. Researchers say that people who are already overweight and/or diabetic should avoid it as much as possible. The high fructose consumption has a negative effect on the gastrointestinal tract and interferes with the ability of the intestine to absorb nutrients in food.

This proverb, of course, ought to be extended to all forms of eating and drinking and even all forms of human activity. Moderation is the watchword. Too much of anything can and will turn into a bad thing. Statistics show that 20% of individuals suffer from “food addiction,” and that number is much higher among those with obesity. According to the Yale Food Addiction Scale, the most addictive foods are processed foods that are “usually high in sugar, fat or both.” The study found that the top 15 foods people are most addicted to are: pizza, chocolate, potato chips, cookies, ice cream, french fries, cheeseburgers, soda, cake, cheese, bacon, fried chicken, rolls, buttered popcorn, and breakfast cereal.

Now, most of these foods should only be had on rare occasions; some of them can be had more frequently in moderation. However, when we eat these or any foods, we ought to eat an appropriate portion. The Bible says, “Eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.” Most of us eat beyond the point of sufficiency; we eat until we are stuffed and feel satisfied. However, while the stomach may crave more food during mealtimes, we must not give in to the “lust of the flesh.” We must eat with our minds just as much as we eat with our bodies. We must learn to tell our bodies “no” and only eat that which is sufficient for us at any given time.

If the Lord tarries his coming and we live, next time, we will continue looking at what this passage tells us about overcoming gluttony, obesity, and God’s plan for man’s eating habits.

PRACTICAL STEP: In “The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle,” Mike Anderson continues sharing the importance of exercise as a part of your dietary changes. He writes, “Walking is probably the best exercise for all of us. It’s easy, cheap and gets you outdoors, which can do wonders for your mental state. It wasn’t that long ago that walking wasn’t an exercise at all, but transportation for the vast majority of Americans, so try to find opportunities during the day that allows you to walk more, instead of driving to a destination.

“Always get at least half an hour of exercise a day, or 45 minutes five times a week. If you’ve had a busy day, even 15 minutes can be beneficial. Try walking for 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening. I guarantee it will transform your life within a month.

“Get out in the sun occasionally. It will bring some perspective into your life, it’s the best way to get vitamin D and recent studies have shown that moderate exposure has a protective effect against all sorts of cancers — including skin cancer. Just the opposite of what we’ve been told for the last 20 years.”

——-

In closing, as we focus on overcoming the sin of gluttony, and managing our bodies as God intended, we must not lose sight of the most important part of our existence — our spiritual life. Even those of you who are fit, who eat right, and who exercise regularly must still address the condition of your soul. You may keep your body in perfect condition till the day you die, but you will still die — we all will, and the only thing that will matter is the condition of your soul. Is your soul in shape? Is your soul in right standing with God?

The only way to make sure of that is to trust Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and the consequences of sin. He alone can save your soul, put you in right standing with God, and ensure that you do not perish in Hell. Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, here is how you can trust Him today.

LISTEN: The Story of the Gentle Gentile General, Part 6 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 597 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 964 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Matthew 8:5-13

5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

——-

After Jesus expresses His admiration for the “great faith” of the Roman centurion, in contrast to the lack of faith among many of the Jews, Jesus issues these parting words: “Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.” He confirms the faith of the centurion and expresses that his request will be granted according to the measure of his faith.

Adam Clarke said, “‘According to thy faith be it done unto thee,’ is a general measure of God’s dealings with mankind. To get an increase of faith is to get an increase of every grace which constitutes the mind that was in Jesus, and prepares fully for the enjoyment of the kingdom of God. God is the same in the present time which he was in ancient days; and miracles may be wrought for us by the instrumentality of our faith. But, alas! where is faith to be found!”

Jesus found great faith in the centurion because Scripture teaches that God deals with us in accordance with our faith. Those who have faith in God for great things will see those great things done. Note that Jesus says to the centurion, “be it done unto THEE.” Jesus worked this healing miracle, not only for the sake of the servant, but primarily for the sake of the centurion who had faith that the miracle could be worked. Without the centurion’s faith, the servant would not have been healed — and not just healed, but “healed in the selfsame hour.” When Jesus told the centurion “go thy way,” He commanded the servant’s instantaneous healing. The servant going his way and returning to his house was an extension of his faith. He didn’t see the servant healed, but he believed, based on Jesus’ word, that the servant would be healed. Luke 7 tells us that by the time the centurion arrived home, he “found the servant whole that had been sick.”

That is the challenge for us today: to have great faith in God, to believe the words of Jesus, and to ‘go our way’ — to go about our day, to live our lives — believing that God will do as He promised.

Erdmann Neumeister wrote:

I know my faith is founded

On Jesus Christ, my God and Lord;

And this my faith confessing,

Unmoved I stand upon His Word.

Man’s reason cannot fathom

The truth of God profound;

Who trusts her subtle wisdom

Relies on shifting ground.

God’s Word is all sufficient,

It makes divinely sure,

And trusting in its wisdom,

My faith shall rest secure.

——-

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

LISTEN: How to Overcome Temptation, Part 102 (Anger and Wrath) (Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class #226 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

Welcome to the Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class. I am Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society and pastor of Gospel Light House of Prayer International. The purpose of this time together is to teach young believers everything they need to know about their faith in Jesus Christ and provide them with the knowledge they need to live victorious Christian lives.

Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13:

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

— PRAYER —

Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 102 (Anger and Wrath)”

In this section of our Onward Christian Soldiers discipleship class, we are looking at specific temptations that are, as the Bible says, “common to man.” We are looking at what the Bible says about these sins so we can be aware of its dangers and so that we can hide Scripture in our hearts to use when we are tempted.

The sin that we are looking at today is the sin of anger and wrath. This is the fifth sin in a list of 12 temptations that comes from two sources — one ancient and one modern. The first source is a list that was developed by monks in the early church called “the seven deadly sins” or the “cardinal sins.” The second source is a Barna survey from 2011 which tracked the top temptations Americans admitted to struggling with.

Today, we are looking at Proverbs 15:1. (Remember, the text of this lesson is made available online after each class, so you can go to our website GLHOPI.com, click the “Onward Christian Soldiers” banner on the home page, and begin to learn these verses by heart throughout the week.)

Proverbs 15:1

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

– – – – –

This proverb is directed at those who would seek to prevent the anger or wrath of others from rising up against them. While the one who has a tendency to become angry or wrathful is responsible for his own behavior, there are things that we can do if we want to defuse potentially explosive situations volitile explosive people. Here we read that a “soft answer turns away wrath.” The Hebrew word translated as “soft” means: wise, kind, loving, or gentle, not boistrous, not passivive-aggressive, vindictive not tit-for-tat, not angry in kind when dealing with someone who has a tendency to become angry or wrathful, there is wisdom in treading carefully even if you think you are in the right and especially if that person is in a position of authority.

The meaning of the Hebrew word translated as “grievous” is: hurtful, painful, or offensive. It is not wise to use such language toward a person who has a tendency to become angry, just as it is not wise to stir up a hornets’ nest. If you do, you are likely to get stung.

Some have argued that one of the reasons why we have so many instances of police brutality toward young men is because many young men have not learned how to respect authority. They have not learned the wisdom of this verse. They have not learned that when the man across from you not only has the authority of the government, but has a baton, a taser, and a gun in order to enforce that authority, the wisest course of action is to have a soft answer and to avoid using grievous words. This is not to say that the police in these situations are always justified in their actions; however, it is saying that the Bible gives us a way to preserve our own life and well-being — and that is to not stir up anger or wrath in others through foolish words.

If you struggle with anger or wrath, take this passage to heart and begin to use it the next time you face that temptation.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward.

I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. LISTEN: The Work You Should Be Doing Until Jesus Comes, Part 1 (Second Coming Chapel with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Luke 14:15-24

15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

— PRAYER —

The Work You Should Be Doing Until Jesus Comes, Part 1

The parable that we are looking at today is not so much a parable about the Second Coming of Christ as much as it is a parable about what we, as believers, ought to be doing while we await Jesus’ return. As we explore this parable, we will primarily focus on the role of the master’s servant once again. However, Jesus told this parable not directly to His servants (the disciples), but to certain Pharisees and lawyers (or doctors of the Law) whom He had been invited to dine with one Sabbath day. In order to understand the context of this passage, allow me to share with you what Dr. Warren Wiersbe wrote in his commentary:

“Sabbath day hospitality was an important part of Jewish life, so it was not unusual for Jesus to be invited to a home for a meal after the weekly synagogue service. Sometimes the host invited Him sincerely because he wanted to learn more of God’s truth. But many times Jesus was asked to dine only so His enemies could watch Him and find something to criticize and condemn. That was the case on the occasion described in Luke 14 when a leader of the Pharisees invited Jesus to dinner. Jesus was fully aware of what was in men’s hearts, so He was never caught off guard. In fact, instead of hosts or guests judging Jesus, it was Jesus who passed judgment on them when they least expected it. Indeed, in this respect, He was a dangerous person to sit with at a meal or to follow on the road! In Luke 14, we see Jesus dealing with different kinds of people and exposing what was false in their lives and their thinking.”

In the course of the dinner discussion, Jesus stated that those who were truly blessed were the ones who got their reward “at the resurrection of the just.” The Bible informs us that, “When one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.” This parable — the Parable of the Great Banquet — is Jesus’ response to this man. Wiersbe goes on to state, “The Jewish people pictured their future kingdom as a great feast with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the prophets as the honored guests. This anonymous guest was confident that he would one day be at the ‘kingdom feast’ with them! Jesus responded by telling him a parable that revealed the sad consequences of false confidence.

“In Jesus’ day when you invited guests to a dinner, you told them the day but not the exact hour of the meal. A host had to know how many guests were coming so he could butcher the right amount of animals and prepare sufficient food. Just before the feast was to begin, the host sent his servants to each of the guests to tell them the banquet was ready and they should come. In other words, each of the guests in this parable had already agreed to attend the banquet. The host expected them to be there. But instead of eagerly coming to the feast, all of the guests insulted the host by refusing to attend, and they all gave very feeble excuses to defend their change in plans.”

Matthew Henry said, “In this parable observe the free grace and mercy of God shining in the gospel of Christ, which will be food and a feast for the soul of a man that knows its own wants and miseries. All found some pretence to put off their attendance. This reproves the Jewish nation for their neglect of the offers of Christ’s grace. The apostles were to turn to the Gentiles, when the Jews refused the offer; and with them the church was filled. The provision made for precious souls in the gospel of Christ, has not been made in vain; for if some reject, others will thankfully accept the offer. The very poor and low in the world, shall be as welcome to Christ as the rich and great; and many times the gospel has the greatest success among those that labour under worldly disadvantages and bodily infirmities. Christ’s house shall at last be filled.”

As I mentioned previously, we as believers are represented by the servant in this parable. It is our job to invite (and remind people of their invitation) to God’s Great Banquet. Just as Jesus has gone to Heaven to prepare a place for us, He has also gone to prepare a feast for us. We who believe in Him are His servants tasked with going into the world. The Great Commission is Jesus bidding us to extend His invitation and say to the world, “Come; for all things are now ready.” Much of our faithfulness will be measured by how diligent we are in extending God’s invitation to the world. May we think on that as we delve deeper into this parable.

Eliza E. Hewitt wrote:

Bear the good tidings all over the world,

Let the bright banner of love be unfurled,

Wherever sorrow and sin shall be found,

There let the news of salvation resound.

Think of the millions who never have heard

One precious promise from God’s holy Word;

Think of the lives marred and darkened by sin,

Tell them the story that brings light within.

Oh, what a song shall in Heaven be sung!

By every nation and kindred and tongue;

Some may be there through our efforts and prayer,

Joy everlasting together we’ll share.

—–

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven.

When the centurion requested that Jesus heal his servant, Jesus immediately stated that He would come to the centurion’s home and do just that. However, the centurion expressed that he did not feel worthy enough for Jesus to come into his house and exhibited faith that Jesus could heal his servant with just a word leading to Jesus ‘marvelling’ at his faith. Jesus stated that He had yet to come across the “great faith” that this Gentile had shown among the Israelites, who had every reason to express such faith in Him.

As we touched on on yesterday, this encounter was a foreshadowing of the Jews rejecting Christ and the Gentiles embracing Him. In fact Jesus says as much in verses 11 and 12. “And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

This would have been shocking news to Jesus’ mostly Jewish audience. The Jews assumed that only their people would sit down in the Kingdom of Heaven with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But Jesus says that many from the east and west — Gentiles, like this Roman centurion, from the ends of the earth — would sit down at the heavenly banquet table in God’s kingdom. The guarantee of Heaven does not come with racial identity, family heritage, or lineage; it comes only through faith in Christ. That is what Jesus wants the Jews to understand — only their faith in Him can save them.

In contrast, those who do not place their faith and trust in Christ are “cast out into outer darkness” where there is “weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Many “sons of the kingdom” — the Jews of yesterday, and many church people who are religious but lost — will end up in Hell. Charles Spurgeon said, ‘We see that Jesus was unafraid to speak of hell, and in fact did so more than any other in the Bible. There are some ministers who never mention anything about hell. I heard of a minister who once said to his congregation, “If you do not love the Lord Jesus Christ, you will be sent to that place which it is not polite to mention.” He ought not to have been allowed to preach again, I am sure, if he could not use plain words.’

If Jesus would tell His own people — the Jews He came to save “first” — that many of them would end up in Hell, surely He must not have been playing around. He didn’t want them to end up in Hell; He wanted them to see the importance of placing their faith in Him, following the example of the Roman centurion. And He wants us to see the importance of placing great faith in Him — for temporal things like healing, but, more importantly, for eternal life.

Daniel W. Whittle wrote:

I believed in God’s wonderful mercy and grace,

Believed in the smile of His reconciled face,

Believed in His message of pardon and peace,

I believed, and I keep on believing.

I believed in the work of my crucified Lord,

Believed in redemption alone thro’ His blood,

Believed in my Savior by trusting His Word;

I believed, and I keep on believing.

I believed in the heart that was opened for me,

Believed in the love flowing blessèd and free,

Believed that my sins were all nailed to the tree;

I believed, and I keep on believing.

I believed in Himself, as the true living One,

Believed in His presence on high on the throne,

Believed in His coming in glory full soon;

I believed, and I keep on believing.
