LISTEN: The Story of the Gentle Gentile General, Part 4 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 594 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 961 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)

TEXT: Matthew 8:5-13

5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

After Jesus clearly stated that He would come and heal the centurion’s servant, one might think that He would be offended when the centurion rejected that offer. You or I might have thought, ‘I just offered to come to your house and heal your servant and now you think you can place demands on me — such as ‘speak the word only.'” But Jesus does not react that way. Instead, Matthew records that He ‘marvelled.’ The word ‘marvel’ means to wonder at or to have in admiration. Jesus marvelled so much that He turned about to the crowd and said, “Verily [truly], I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.”

Dr. Warren Wiersbe notes, “Twice in the Gospels it is recorded that Jesus marveled: here, at the great faith of the Gentile centurion, and in Mark 6:6, at the great unbelief of the Jews. Matthew recorded two ‘Gentile’ miracles: this one and the healing of the daughter of the Syrophoenician woman. In both cases, the Lord was impressed with their great faith. This is an early indication that the Jews would not believe, but the Gentiles would. Also, in both of these miracles, our Lord healed from a distance. This was a reminder of the spiritual position of the Gentiles ‘afar off.'”

What impressed Jesus about the faith of this gentle Gentile general? First, Jesus marvelled at the centurion’s understanding of Jesus’ own authority. Most of the Jews saw Jesus as ‘one of the prophets,’ not necessarily God in the flesh and the promised Messiah. While most of them accepted His miracles, they did not view them as anything more than the miracles performed by Elijah or Moses. In fact, the religious leaders accused Jesus of working miracles such as casting out devils through the power of Beelzebub (Satan). They did not recognize his authority as God. But this gentle Gentile general did.

Second, Jesus marvelled at the centurion’s belief that, sight unseen, Jesus could heal his servant. The Man Jesus had never seen this servant, didn’t know this servant, and no one would expect a doctor to be able to heal without first going to diagnose the patient. But the centurion saw none of that as a barrier to the miracle he requested. He asked Jesus to do something extraordinary without a doubt in his mind that Jesus could do.

Finally, Jesus marvelled at the fact that a Gentile would have so much faith in Him. That is why He exclaimed, “I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. The Jews were still struggling to come to terms with the idea that Jesus was their Messiah. They viewed Him with, at best, skepticism, and at worst, disdain. The religious leaders did not like him shaking up the established order of things. And the commoners flocked to Him because of the miracles He performed and his plain, bold teaching of Scripture. But, as is shown throughout the gospels, when Jesus called on the multitudes to commit to being His disciples, very few were willing to follow Him. So, it was remarkable that the Jews who had 1,400 years of Scripture and history to base their beliefs on were blinded to Jesus’ true nature, yet this Gentile general who as “afar off” from God could so easily see who Jesus was and what He could do.

I wonder if we have a faith that Jesus would marvel at today. How often have you dared to believe that God could do the seemingly impossible? Or are we bound by the constraints of limited belief and limited understanding of God’s nature? Jesus expressed His concern that the faith exhibited by this gentle Gentile general would not be a common thing when He said, “When the Son of Man cometh, will He find faith on the earth?” You and I can’t answer for all the earth. But, we can answer for ourselves. We can choose to believe God to do the impossible — not based on fanciful imagination or wishful thinking, but based upon what Scripture tells us He has done down through the years.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,

2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,

4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,

5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

7 As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ;

8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.

On this, the 100th birthday celebration of Billy Graham, I want to share something from the evangelist whom God made great regarding the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He said, “Too often we seek to excuse ourselves in our sins, but God seeks to convict us of sin and save us from it. Sin then is not a toy with which to play but a terror to be shunned.”

We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 323 messages in this series.

This is message #324 titled, How to Pray for the Good and Faithful Saints That You Don’t Know, Part 5.

In our last message, we began looking at the specific prayer requests that Paul made for the believers in Colosse. The apostle first prayed for these believers to have “knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” He wanted them to know God’s will for their lives and to have the wisdom and spiritual understanding to carry it out.

Then, the apostle prayed specifically that the Colossian believers “might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing.” The term “walk” has to do with the lifestyle of the believers, their daily living. What is the manner in which Paul prayed for them to walk? “Worthily.” The Greek word translated “worthy” is “axios”. It means: appropriately or suitably; more specifically, it means as becometh a believer.

There is a proper, appropriate, and suitable way for a believer to live, and Paul prays that the Colossians would live in that manner. When believers walk worthily, they are living in a manner that is “pleasing” unto the Lord. John Gill said, “To ‘walk worthy’ of Christ is to walk by faith in him; to walk after his Spirit, and according to his word, and in his ordinances; to have the conversation as becomes his Gospel, and to live worthy of that calling wherewith the saints are called by grace to the obtaining of his kingdom and glory.” He goes on to say, “The apostle prays that their knowledge might issue in practice; for knowledge, without practice, is of no avail. He first asks for knowledge, and then practice, for how should men act according to the will of God, or Christ, unless they know it? and when they know it, they should not rest in their knowledge, but put it in practice.”

Researchers sometimes use the term “practicing Christian” to denote someone who attends church, reads the Bible, witnesses and prays frequently, as opposed to a “nominal Christian” who is a believer in name, but rarely attends church, reads the Bible, witnesses or prays. Well, every Christian ought to be a “practicing Christian.” That is what Paul prays for on behalf of the Colossian believers, and that is what we ought to pray for for ourselves and for other believers. Nominal Christians don’t do any good for the church or the world. Only those who know the will of God through wisdom and spiritual understanding, and then proceed to practice what they know to be the will of God, help grow the Kingdom of God.

Walk worthy of the Lord

Come give your heart to Christ

Live always bearing fruit for Him

Live strengthened by His might

Walk worthy of the Lord

All power to His name

Give Him glory; Give Him honor

Urge all others to do the same

As we celebrate what would have been Billy Graham’s 100th birthday today, I want to share Part 3 of one of his messages titled “The Sin of Tolerance” from the evangelist whom God made great Billy Graham first preached this sermon on February 2, 1959.

Jesus was intolerant toward selfishness.

He said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself” (Luke 9:23). Self-centeredness is the basic cause of much of our distress in life. Hypochondria, a mental disorder which is accompanied by melancholy and depression, is often caused by self-pity and self-centeredness.

Most of us suffer from spiritual near-sightedness. Our interests, our loves, and our energies are too often focused upon ourselves.

Jesus was intolerant of selfishness. He underscored the fact that his disciples were to live outflowingly rather than selfishly. To the rich young ruler he said, “If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven …” (Matt. 19:21). It wasn’t the giving of his goods that Jesus demanded, particularly-but his release from selfishness and its devastating effect on his personality and life.

He was intolerant of selfishness when he said, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matt. 16:25). The “life” which Jesus urges us to lose is the selfishness that lives within us, the old nature of sin that is in conflict with God. Peter, James and John left their nets, but Jesus did not object to nets as such—it was the selfish living they symbolized that he wanted them to forsake. Matthew left the “custom seat,” a political job, to follow Christ. But Jesus did not object to a political career as such—it was the selfish quality of living which it represented that he wanted Matthew to forsake.

So, in your life and mine, “self” must be crucified and Christ enthroned. He was intolerant of any other way, for he knew that selfishness and the Spirit of God cannot exist together.

Jesus was intolerant toward sin.

He was tolerant toward the sinner but intolerant toward the evil which enslaved him. To the adulteress he said, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more” (John 8:11). He forgave her because he loved her; but he condemned sin because he hateded it with a holy hatred.

God has always been intolerant of sin! His Word says: “Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil” (Isa. 1:16). “Awake to righteousness, and sin not” (1 Cor. 15:34). “Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts …” (Isa. 55:7).

Christ was “so intolerant of sin that he died on the cross to free men from its power. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Sin lies at the root of society’s difficulties today. Whatever separates man from God disunites man from man. The world problem will never be solved until the question of sin is settled.

But the Cross is God’s answer to sin. To all who will receive the blessed news of salvation through Christ, it forever crosses out and cancels sin’s power. Forest rangers know well the value of the “burn-back” in fighting forest fires. To save an area from being burned, they simply burn away all of the trees and shrubs to a safe distance; and when the fire reaches that burned-out spot, those standing there are safe from the flames. Fire is thus fought by fire.

Calvary was a colossal fighting of fire by fire. Christ, taking on himself all of our sins, allowed the fire of sin’s judgment to fall upon him. The area around the Cross has become a place of refuge for all who would escape the judgment of sin. Take your place with him at the Cross; stand by the Cross; yield your life to him who redeemed you on the Cross, and the fire of sin’s judgment can never touch you.

God is intolerant of sin. That intolerance sent his Son to die for us. He has said “that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish.” The clear implication is that those who refuse to believe in Christ shall be eternally lost. Come to him today, while his Spirit deals with your heart!

Democrat Joe Manchin Blasts Trump After he Defeats President’s Candidate in Senate Race

Minutes after securing reelection Tuesday night, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin took a harsher tone against President Donald Trump, blasting him for the failure of his Republican challenger, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, an ardent White House ally.

Manchin barbed the president for not being able to get Morrisey over the finish line despite the state having voted for Trump by a margin of more than 40 points in 2016.

“Let me say that I never expected that this race would be the national race it turned out to be,” Manchin said in his victory speech. “I never expected President Trump to come to this state as much as he did, sending Vice President Pence, sending his family, time after time. And you stood tall.

“What you said, what West Virginia said, loud and clear tonight: ‘Mr. President, we want our senator, not your senator,'” Manchin added.

The incumbent Democrat also condemned “toxic rhetoric” and demanded Trump play a more unifying role.

“When I raise my hand and swear to God to uphold the Constitution, that’s for everybody. That is for everybody. And we’ve got to stop this absolute toxic rhetoric that’s going on in this country — we have got to stop this toxic rhetoric,” he said. “We’ve got to bring people together. Mr. President, I want you to be a president of the United States, not the divided states.”

After his speech, Manchin told Business Insider that “no one’s ever won in a state where the president had a 42-point spread,” repeating his claim that voters rejected Trump’s choice of candidate.

But Manchin said he was not worried that his harsher tone against Trump would upset the president, who often lashes out at critics and those who downplay his status as a GOP kingmaker.

8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled [a Greek word which means to ‘wonder at’ or express ‘admiration’ for], and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

As we approach Billy Graham’s birthday celebration, I want to share something from the evangelist whom God made great regarding the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He said, “The object of Christian faith is Christ. Faith means more than an intellectual assent to the claims of Christ. You are not called upon to believe something that is not credible, but to believe in the fact of history that in reality transcends all history.”

When Jesus tells the Roman Centurion, “I will come and heal him,” this gentle Gentile general has what many of us would consider to be a shocking reaction. His immediate response is, “Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof.” Here is Jesus, the Great Physician, a proven healer and miracle-worker, offering to come to this man’s house to heal the servant that he is obviously very concerned about. Yet, the Centurion says, ‘I am not worthy that you would come under my roof.’

Why would this centurion initially reject Jesus’ offer to do what he desired? The Centurion explains himself further by saying, “I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.” The Centurion was a man in authority over others, but also under the authority of others. In the chain of command, he had superiors and inferiors. He usually had 100 soldiers in his command, but, depending on time and circumstance, he could command up to 800. As a centurion, he also had the authority to discipline Roman citizens with a vine-staff as citizens were protected from other forms of flogging by the law.

The centurion recognizes the mantle of authority on Jesus as well — and he recognizes that Jesus’ authority is much greater than his own. Just as the centurion could tell a man to go, or come, or do this, the centurion knew that Jesus could do the same. The centurion likely also felt that it would have been inappropriate for Jesus to come to his house to do a favor for him, as he would not have expected one of his superiors to come to his house to do something for him at his own request. So, the Centurion’s solution was simple: “Speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.”

It would seem that the centurion made things more difficult for Jesus. Usually, when we are making a request from someone who is in a position of greater authority, we try to make it as easy for them to help us as we possibly can, knowing they have the prerogative to say “no.” But this Centurion, while expressing his humility before Jesus, inadvertently places constraints on how Jesus can work this miracle, which simultaneously reveals the depth of his own faith. Dr. Warren Wiersbe notes, “It would seem that everything about this man would prevent him from coming to Jesus. He was a professional soldier, and Jesus was a Man of peace. He was a Gentile, and Jesus was a Jew. But this soldier had one thing working for him: he was a man of great faith. This centurion understood that Jesus, like himself, had authority. All Christ had to do was speak the word and the disease would obey Him the way a soldier obeyed his officer.”

Just as the centurion recognized that the disease afflicting his servant was under the authority of Jesus Christ, we must recognize and act as though every circumstance in our lives is also under the authority of Christ. We must approach Christ just as humbly, yet with as much faith and confidence as this centurion if we want Christ to act on our behalf.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. As we approach Billy Graham’s birthday celebration, I want to share Part 2 of one of his messages titled “The Sin of Tolerance” from the evangelist whom God made great Billy Graham first preached this sermon on February 2, 1959.

Our Lord’s Intolerance

His was the intolerance of a pilot who maneuvers his plane through the storm, realizing that a single error, just one flash of broad-mindedness, might bring disaster to all those passengers on the plane.

Once while flying from Korea to Japan, we ran through a rough snowstorm; and when we arrived over the airport in Tokyo, the ceiling and visibility were almost zero. The pilot had to make an instrument landing. I sat up in the cockpit with the pilot and watched him sweat it out as he was brought in by ground control approach. A man in the tower at the airport talked us in. I did not want these men to be broad-minded, but narrow-minded. I knew that our lives depended on it. Just so, when we come in for the landing in the great airport in heaven, I don’t want any broad-mindedness. I want to come in on the beam, and even though I may be considered narrow here, I want to be sure of a safe landing there.

Christ was so intolerant of man’s lost estate that he left his lofty throne in the heavenlies, took on himself the form of man, suffered at the hands of evil men and died on a cross to purchase our redemption. So serious was man’s plight that he could not look upon it lightly. With the love that was his, he could not be broadminded about a world held captive by its lusts, its appetites and its sins.

Having paid such a price, he could not be tolerant about man’s indifference toward him and the redemption he had wrought. He said, “He that is not with me is against me” (Matt. 12:30). He also said, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life, and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36).

He spoke of two roads, two kingdoms, two masters, two rewards, and two eternities. And he said, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matt. 6:24). We have the power to choose whom we will serve, but the alternative to choosing Christ brings certain destruction. Christ said that! The broad, wide, easy, popular way leads to death and destruction. Only the way of the Cross leads home.

Playing Both Sides

The popular, tolerant attitude toward the gospel of Christ is like a man going to watch the Braves and the Dodgers play a baseball game and rooting for both sides. It would be impossible for a man who has no loyalty to a particular team to really get into the game.

Baseball fans are very intolerant in both Milwaukee and Los Angeles. If you would cheer for both sides in Los Angeles or Milwaukee, someone would yell, “Hey, make up your mind who you’re for.”

Christ said, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon … no man can serve two masters” (Matt. 6:24). One of the sins of this age is the sin of broad-mindedness. We need more people who will step out and say unashamedly, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15).

Jesus was intolerant toward hypocrisy.

He pronounced more “woes” on the Pharisees than on any other sect because they were given to outward piety but inward sham. “Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!” He said, “for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within ye are full of extortion and excess” (Matt. 23:25).

The church is a stage where all the performers are professors, but where too few of the professors are performers. A counterfeit Christian, singlehandedly, can do more to retard the progress of the church than a dozen saints can do to forward it. That is why Jesus was so intolerant with sham!

Sham’s only reward is everlasting destruction. It is the only sin which has no reward in this life. Robbers have their loot; murderers their revenge; drunkards their stimulation; but the hypocrite has nothing but the contempt of his neighbors and the judgment of God hereafter. That is why Jesus said, “Be not as the hypocrites” (Matt. 6:16).

One of the pet words of this age is “tolerance.” It is a good word, but we have tried to stretch it over too great an area of life. We have applied it too often where it does not belong. The word “tolerant” means “liberal,” “broad-minded,” “willing to put up with beliefs opposed to one’s convictions,” and “the allowance of something not wholly approved.”

Tolerance, in one sense, implies the compromise of one’s convictions, a yielding of ground upon important issues. Hence, over-tolerance in moral issues has made us soft, flabby and devoid of conviction.

We have become tolerant about divorce; we have become tolerant about the use of alcohol; we have become tolerant about delinquency; we have become tolerant about wickedness in high places; we have become tolerant about immorality; we have become tolerant about crime and we have become tolerant about godlessness. We have become tolerant of unbelief.

In a book recently published on what prominent people believe, 60 out of 100 did not even mention God, and only 11 out of 100 mentioned Jesus. There was a manifest tolerance toward soft character and a broadmindedness about morals, characteristic of our day. We have been sapped of conviction, drained of our beliefs and bereft of our faith.

The sciences, however, call for narrow-mindedness. There is no room for broad-mindedness in the laboratory. Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level. It is never 100 degrees nor 189 degrees—but always 212. Water freezes at 32 degrees—not at 23 or 31.

Objects heavier than air are always attracted to the center of the earth. They always go down—never up. I know this is very narrow, but the law of gravity decrees it so, and science is narrow.

Take mathematics. The sum of two plus two is four—not three-and-a-half. That seems very narrow, but arithmetic is not broad. Neither is geometry. It says that a straight line is the shortest distance between two points. That seems very dogmatic and narrow, but geometry is intolerant.

A compass will always point to the magnetic north. It seems that is a very narrow view, but a compass is not very “broad-minded.” If it were, all the ships at sea, and all the planes in the air would be in danger.

If you should ask a man the direction to New York City and he said, “Oh, just take any road you wish, they all lead there,” you would question either his sanity or his truthfulness. Somehow, we have gotten it into our minds that “all roads lead to heaven.” You hear people say, “Do your best,” “Be honest,” and “Be sincere—and you will make it to heaven all right.”

But Jesus Christ, who journeyed from heaven to earth and back to heaven again—who knew the way better than any man who ever lived—said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matt. 7:13,14).

Jesus was narrow about the way of salvation.

He plainly pointed out that there are two roads in life. One is broad—lacking in faith, convictions, and morals. It is the easy, popular, careless way. It is the way of the crowd, the way of the majority, the way of the world. He said, “Many there be that go in thereat.” But he pointed out that this road, easy though it is, popular though it may be, heavily traveled though it is, leads to destruction. And in loving, compassionate intolerance he says, “Enter ye in at the strait gate … because strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life.”

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

As we approach Billy Graham’s birthday celebration, I want to share Part 1 of one of his messages titled “The Sin of Tolerance” from the evangelist whom God made great regarding the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Billy Graham first preached this sermon on February 2, 1959.

One of the pet words of this age is “tolerance.” It is a good word, but we have tried to stretch it over too great an area of life. We have applied it too often where it does not belong. The word “tolerant” means “liberal,” “broad-minded,” “willing to put up with beliefs opposed to one’s convictions,” and “the allowance of something not wholly approved.”

Tolerance, in one sense, implies the compromise of one’s convictions, a yielding of ground upon important issues. Hence, over-tolerance in moral issues has made us soft, flabby and devoid of conviction.

We have become tolerant about divorce; we have become tolerant about the use of alcohol; we have become tolerant about delinquency; we have become tolerant about wickedness in high places; we have become tolerant about immorality; we have become tolerant about crime and we have become tolerant about godlessness. We have become tolerant of unbelief.

In a book recently published on what prominent people believe, 60 out of 100 did not even mention God, and only 11 out of 100 mentioned Jesus. There was a manifest tolerance toward soft character and a broadmindedness about morals, characteristic of our day. We have been sapped of conviction, drained of our beliefs and bereft of our faith.

The sciences, however, call for narrow-mindedness. There is no room for broad-mindedness in the laboratory. Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level. It is never 100 degrees nor 189 degrees—but always 212. Water freezes at 32 degrees—not at 23 or 31.

Objects heavier than air are always attracted to the center of the earth. They always go down—never up. I know this is very narrow, but the law of gravity decrees it so, and science is narrow.

Take mathematics. The sum of two plus two is four—not three-and-a-half. That seems very narrow, but arithmetic is not broad. Neither is geometry. It says that a straight line is the shortest distance between two points. That seems very dogmatic and narrow, but geometry is intolerant.

A compass will always point to the magnetic north. It seems that is a very narrow view, but a compass is not very “broad-minded.” If it were, all the ships at sea, and all the planes in the air would be in danger.

If you should ask a man the direction to New York City and he said, “Oh, just take any road you wish, they all lead there,” you would question either his sanity or his truthfulness. Somehow, we have gotten it into our minds that “all roads lead to heaven.” You hear people say, “Do your best,” “Be honest,” and “Be sincere—and you will make it to heaven all right.”

But Jesus Christ, who journeyed from heaven to earth and back to heaven again—who knew the way better than any man who ever lived—said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matt. 7:13,14).

Jesus was narrow about the way of salvation.

He plainly pointed out that there are two roads in life. One is broad—lacking in faith, convictions, and morals. It is the easy, popular, careless way. It is the way of the crowd, the way of the majority, the way of the world. He said, “Many there be that go in thereat.” But he pointed out that this road, easy though it is, popular though it may be, heavily traveled though it is, leads to destruction. And in loving, compassionate intolerance he says, “Enter ye in at the strait gate … because strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life.”

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled [a Greek word which means to ‘wonder at’ or express ‘admiration’ for], and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

As we approach Billy Graham’s birthday celebration, I want to share something from the evangelist whom God made great regarding the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He said, “Today even the calendar speaks of Jesus’ death. Why isn’t the calendar dated from Mohammed’s flight, or from Buddha’s birth? Because Jesus is the only One who has ever died for mankind. But He did not remain dead; He was raised to life and the power of His resurrection changed the world forever! ”

On yesterday, we were introduced to a Roman Centurion, the gentle Gentile general, who comes to Jesus — or, according to some, sends representatives to Jesus — requesting the healing of his servant. This is quite remarkable on the Centurion’s part considering that, in the Roman Empire, slaves or servants were considered property who had no legal personhood. This servant was likely not even a native Roman as most slaves in the Empire were those captured during Rome’s conquests. Yet, this Roman centurion had concern for his servant’s well-being. He likely had sought traditional remedies for the servant’s paralysis, and having no success, he turned to Jesus, the Jewish preacher with the growing following from Galilee.

Notice the character of this centurion, and how closely he identifies with the suffering of his servant. He tells Jesus, “Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.” Can you imagine experiencing a pain that can only be described as “grievous torment”? That is an extremely specific descriptor. Yet, somehow, the Centurion who, based on his description of himself, could have had any number of things going on, is able to describe the pain of his servant — someone whom society would not have expected him to care for in any real way.

It is not far-fetched to see how Jesus may have identified especially with the feelings of the Centurion toward his servant. Jesus himself had come not just to save humanity, but to live with, suffer with, and identify with humanity in a sin-cursed world. Jesus could have just as well described the “grievous torment” of lost souls paralyzed by sin. Jesus didn’t have to care for us, but because He is a gentle, loving Savior, He cares for every part of our lives and seeks to make us whole. And that is what He set out to do with the Centurion’s servant. His immediate response is recorded in verse 7: “I will come and heal him.”

No questions. No judgment. No delay. Simply, “I will come.” And, “I will heal him.” How wonderful is it that we serve a Savior like that? A Savior who hears of the “grievous torment” of one of his creation through the compassionate concern of a man who did not have to be concerned? A Savior who immediately says, “I will come. I will heal.” Just as with the leper, we see the will of God toward His creation. He wants to heal us. He wants to save us. In the words of the Psalmist, He ‘forgives all our iniquities; heals all our diseases; redeems our lives from destruction; crowns us with lovingkindness and tender mercies; and satisfies us with good things.’

Barney E. Warren wrote:

Simply trusting in the Savior,

Healing virtue now receive;

You must never doubt or waver,

His unfailing word believe.

Come, ye helpless, sick and suffering,

At His feet in meekness kneel;

Soul and body to Him offering,

He will all your sickness heal.

He is just the same forever,

Cast away your doubts and fears;

From affliction He’ll deliver,

Though you’ve suffered many years.

Listen to the declaration:

Christ forever is the same;

All the power in earth and heaven

Is in His majestic name.

Casting all your care on Jesus,

Sickness, sorrow, grief, and pain;

Oh, believe His blessed promise,

There is healing in His name.
