LISTEN: The Story of Jesus and the Sudden Storm, Part 1 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 613 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 980 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 8:23-27
23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
——-
By way of introduction, allow me to share with you what John MacArthur wrote about this passage: “The small group of disciples who followed Jesus were the true and open believers, those who were publicly and permanently committed to Him. The boat they entered into was probably a small, open fishing craft of the type commonly used by fishermen such as Peter, James, and John. The Sea of Galilee lies just over 600 feet below sea level, near the northern end of the Jordan River. Mt. Hermon rises 9,200 feet to the north, and strong northerly winds often plummet down the upper Jordan valley with great force. When they meet the wanner air over the Galilee basin, the intensity is increased. Hitting the cliffs on the eastern shore, the winds swirl and twist, causing the waters beneath them to churn violently. The fact that they come quickly and with little warning makes the storms all the more dangerous and frightening.”
As we noted in our message on yesterday, when the twelves disciples of Christ entered into the ship with Jesus, they had no idea where they were headed next. They did not know where they would next lay their heads or when they would next see their families again. However, unlike others, these disciples did not let that keep them back from following Jesus. It turns out that what was in store for them was a great storm.
Matthew reports, “Behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves.” Violent storms were frequent on the Sea of Galilee. Knowing all things, Jesus would have known the storm was coming. Yet, He permitted the disciples to sail into it. It is important to note that this storm came, not because they had been disobedient, but in spite of their obedience to following Jesus. This reminds us that, sometimes, God allows us to go through storms in order to test us or teach us important lessons as He does with the disciples here.
Notice the difference between the reactions of Jesus and the disciples as this “great tempest” tossed their ship on the sea. The Bible says Jesus “was asleep.” Jesus was not worried or concerned. He had come into the ship to get away from the crowds so He could rest, and that is what He did. His peace was not dependent on outward circumstances; His peace came from within. Storm or no storm, Jesus was at rest. He knew that the storm was under God’s control — yea, even His control. He had nothing to be worried about. So, He slept.
Compare that with many of our fellow men and women today who cannot sleep even in a warm bed in their own, quiet house. Why? Because there is a storm, a “great tempest,” in their minds and hearts. Some people lay awake worried about tomorrow, about bills that need to be paid, about tensions on the job, about consequences of sin, about family problems. They have no inner peace, and so when the storms of life cloud their minds, they cannot sleep — or they turn to drugs to numb them into a few hours of shut-eye.
The disciples did not have the inner peace or trust in God that Jesus had. So, when they saw the great tempest thrashing about them, with waves tossed higher than their ship, they were very afraid. They had followed Jesus into the ship when they very well could have stayed safe and dry in Peter’s house in Capernaum. They feared for their safety, if not for their lives, and they wondered how Jesus could sleep at a time like this. They hurried to wake Him, “saying, Lord, save us: we perish!”
What is your response to the storms of life? Are you at peace in the midst of a tempest, or does your mind automatically turn to the worst possible scenario? One of the lessons we ought to learn from this account is that following Jesus does not make us immune from storms. However, it should give us the confidence to know that God is in control, and that, if we are in His will, everything will work our all right.
William Cowper wrote:
The billows swell, the winds are high,
Clouds overcast the wintry sky;
Out of the depths to Thee I call,
My fears are great, my strength is small.
O Lord, the pilot’s part perform,
And guide and guard me through the storm;
Defend me from each threatening ill,
Control the save, say, Peace, be still.
Amidst the roaring of the sea,
My soul still hangs her hope on Thee;
Thy constant love, Thy faithful care,
Is all that saves me from despair.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! LISTEN: The Scripture & the Sense: Jeremiah 8 (with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte III reads the Word of God on a daily basis and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as Matthew Henry’s Commentary On the Bible. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.
Today we are reading Jeremiah 8.

LISTEN: The Story of Jesus and the Would-be Disciples, Part 4 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 612 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 979 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 8:18-23
18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
——-
We began this mini-series on Jesus and the would-be disciples with the Lord withdrawing Himself from the oncoming crowds and giving the command to depart unto the others side of the Sea of Galilee. While that may sound like a simple command, the actual process of getting a boat ready to sail could take some time. So, while Peter and the other disciples prepared the boat for their departure, we can imagine some of the crowd catching up with Jesus on the shore. Among those people would have been the scribe and the man who wanted to bury his father. Both of these individuals saw that Jesus was about to depart and chose this time to deliver their best presentations of devotion.
Jesus’ response to both of these men revealed that while, perhaps, they had good intentions, they were not ready to completely follow Him. Jesus knew that there would be few people willing to follow a leader if it meant not knowing where they would lay their head to sleep each night or if it meant possibly cutting off ties with close family members. In contrast to the would-be disciples, verse 23 concludes this segment of the chapter with the statement, “When Jesus was entered into a ship, his disciples [the Twelve] followed him.”
Most leaders would have jumped at the chance to grow their number of followers, but Jesus was content to continue on with the twelve He had chosen. If the other two men were indeed ready to follow Jesus, they would have been ready to drop what they were doing and follow Jesus into the ship, ready to go wherever he might lead them. The Twelve didn’t know where they might end up when they chose to follow Jesus. When Jesus came to them as they were fishing or tax collecting or sitting under a tree, He said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” The Twelve dropped what they were doing and began to follow Jesus. They didn’t make excuses; they didn’t say, ‘Let me do this one thing first’; they didn’t ask questions. They placed their trust in Jesus, not just with their words, but with their actions. The Twelve arose and followed Him.
And here, in this passage, we read again that “when Jesus was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him,” no questions asked. If Jesus came to us today with a one-way ticket for an ocean-liner heading across the Pacific, and said, “Come, get on the ship with me,” what would we do? No explanation. No destination. No future plans. Just, “Here’s your ticket; get on the ship.” Would you drop what you were doing and immediately follow Jesus? I hope you can answer that question in the affirmative because that is the kind of dedication Jesus requires of those who would be His disciples.
It is believed that the Indian missionary, Sadhu Sundar Singh, first penned the words of the now-popular song:
I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
No turning back, no turning back.
The world behind me, the cross before me;
The world behind me, the cross before me;
The world behind me, the cross before me;
No turning back, no turning back.
Though none go with me, still I will follow;
Though none go with me, still I will follow;
Though none go with me, still I will follow;
No turning back, no turning back.

NEW RELEASE! How to Stand in the Gap: The Purpose, Power, and Importance of Intercessory Prayer
“Somebody somewhere is praying for you.” Around the world today, there are grandparents praying for their grandchildren. There are mothers in their prayer closets praying for wayward sons. There are fathers sitting up late interceding for their daughters. Somewhere at six o’clock in the morning, there are a handful of people on their knees in a church classroom praying for their community, their city, their nation, their world.
This book is an invitation to Christians who want to engage in work that is dear to the heart of God—praying for others. Christians have a heavenly assignment to intercede. We stand in the gap between heaven and earth, offering up intercessory prayers for our brothers and sisters in Christ, for those in our families, and for those outside the household of faith. This book aims to show you just how to do that.
In eight powerful chapters, we take an in-depth look at the prayer life of the Prophet Daniel and how he did not neglect the strong urging, need, and leading to intercede for his people, the children of Israel. You will learn what it means to be an intercessor, how to prepare for intercessory prayer, how to be an effective intercessor, how to intercede for the church, and much more. The Prophet Samuel told the Israelites, “Far be it from me to sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you.” Likewise, we should regard it as sin if we do not engage in intercessory prayer.
God is looking for intercessors. He is looking for people to stand in the gap. He is looking for people who will pray and seek His face, not only for themselves, but for others. This book will equip you to be that person.

——-
As we continue looking at the story of Jesus and the would-be disciples, we are introduced to another man who is described as already being a disciple. We do not know his name or station in life. However, he appears to have been someone who at the very least “followed” Jesus’ teachings and actions in the Judean region. He was interested enough to stick around Jesus and bold enough to describe himself as a disciple of Jesus. However, based on his statement to Jesus, we know that he had not yet decided to follow Jesus full-time, 100%.
However, it appears that this man was on the cusp of that decision. He was about to dive deep into the living water. But, he had one thing he felt he needed to take care of first. He tells Jesus, “Lord, I must needs go first and bury my father.” To be clear, the man’s father was not yet dead; but, apparently, his soon passing was anticipated. Among first century Jewish culture, family ties were a big deal. The death of a father meant that the family structure would be shaken up a bit. The father’s wealth would be divided among his sons, with the oldest son getting a double portion and becoming the de facto leader and public head of the extended family. The burial and mourning process was an extended multi-day affair, and if one did not show up and mourn appropriately, he was seen by other family members as not having done his or her duty.
Jesus, of course, knew all of this. He knew that this man was worried about what his family would think if he did not show up to the mourning procedures. He also knew that this man was probably eager to gather his inheritance whether it was money, livestock, or land. However, as with the scribe, Jesus does not answer this man with a “yes” or “no.” Instead, He again sets out to describe what it often means to follow Jesus. And, sometimes, following Jesus means shunning family tradition, personal propriety, and societal norms. Jesus shockingly tells this man, “Let the dead bury their dead. Come thou and follow me.”
J.C. Ryle points out that Jesus was not afraid to discourage potential disciples. Unlike many modern evangelists, Jesus was interested more in quality than in quantity. Ryle said, “Nothing has done more harm to Christianity than the practice of filling the ranks of Christ’s army with every volunteer who is willing to make a little profession, and to talk fluently of experience.”
Jesus makes it clear that ultimate dedication is necessary for disciples of Christ. His statement, “Let the dead bury their dead,” expresses that those who are spiritually dead (those who are not true disciples) have a legitimate concern with this physical life and all that it entails, including attending funerals and taking care of the bodies of those who die. However, those who are spiritually alive (those who are true disciples of Christ) know that physical death is not the end. So, attending a funeral, or burying a body, or attending a family gathering is neither here nor there; all those things are ultimately matterless. The true disciple is more concerned about the spiritual realm, the kingdom of God, and whether people, dead or alive, are citizens of that kingdom. That is what Jesus is looking for in His disciples.
Alfred Snead wrote:
Fully surrendered—Lord, I would be,
Fully surrendered, dear Lord, to Thee.
All on the altar laid,
Surrender fully made,
Thou hast my ransom paid;
I yield to Thee.
Fully surrendered—life, time, and all,
All Thou hast given me held at Thy call.
Speak but the word to me,
Gladly I’ll follow Thee,
Now and eternally
Obey my Lord.
Fully surrendered—silver and gold,
His, who hath given me riches untold.
All, all belong to Thee,
For Thou didst purchase me,
Thine evermore to be,
Jesus, my Lord.
Fully surrendered—Lord, I am Thine;
Fully surrendered, Savior divine!
Live Thou Thy life in me;
All fullness dwells in Thee;
Not I, but Christ in me,
Christ all in all.

LISTEN: Why I Still Thank God for America (Thanksgiving Message, with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIIPsalm 136:1-3
1 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
2 O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.
3 O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.
—–
Over the past few years, America has experienced some of its toughest days — politically, economically, socially, and especially spiritually. Church attendance and baptisms in many denominations are on the decline. Revival still tarries. More and more people are classifying themselves as having no religious beliefs. Christians who hold long-standing biblical positions, such as opposition to homosexuality and the importance of praying in Jesus’ name, have been criticized and discriminated against. The Supreme Court, with our president’s approval, made homosexual marriage legal in the United States. The global wave of terrorism has still not abated. In fact, we were hit at home harder this year than any year since 9/11, with attacks on both coasts — including one which became the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Not to mention the killings and attempted killings of police and the wave of hostility that has come against law enforcement in this country. Also, the killing of black men by police has seized headlines again and again over the past few years, sparking protests, riots, and more violence, exposing the fact that America still has not transcended racism. Add to that the over 700 people who have been murdered in Chicago’s gang violence this year alone — an epidemic that seems to have no solution. In America today, millions of people remain unemployed and millions of families still have not recovered from the effects of the Great Recession. Perhaps, most depressingly, the nation was afflicted by a long presidential campaign season filled with scandal, lies, vitriol, and negativity, laying bare the discordant and divided status of these United States.
Considering all this, it is easy to see why many come into the holiday season feeling a bit down about the state of the Union. But, because the Christian’s hope is not of this world, we can rejoice on behalf of our country this Thanksgiving season. Yes, even with all that I have just named, I still thank God for America. In his first inaugural address, Abraham Lincoln said, “Intelligence, patriotism, and a firm reliance on Him who has never yet forsaken this favored land, are still necessary to adjust, in the best way, to all our present difficulty.”
In our passage today, we are reminded that being thankful is a choice. The Psalmist thrice summons us to thankfulness. “O give thanks unto the Lord… O give thanks unto the God of gods… O give thanks to the Lord of lords…” We are called to be thankful because of who God is not because of what is happening around us. But the Psalmist still gives us a reason to be thankful — “because his mercy endures forever.” Surely, it is accurate to say that God’s mercy has been extended to America. With all of our sin, our rebellion against Him, our idolatry, our crime, our violence, and our unwillingness to love and forgive each other, it is past time for God’s judgment. But, still, He shows us mercy, and the ship of state sails on.
So, why do I still thank God for America? Why should you thank God for America? Here are three reasons:
First, I still thank God for America because America is a land where the Gospel is still being preached clearly and without compromise. Psalm 33:12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” There may come a day when true, biblical preaching is driven underground and where real Christians are jailed or killed for preaching Christ and Him crucified. But, it is not this day. If you want to hear the Gospel in America, you can still hear it. If you want to preach the Gospel in America, you can still preach it. Romans 10:15 says, “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” I thank God that there are still bringers of glad tidings in America. I thank God for those preachers and churches who are uncompromising in their proclamation of the Gospel and biblical principles.
Second, I still thank God for America because America is a land of great provision and great opportunity. Psalm 107:8-9 reads, “Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” God’s goodness is on rampant display throughout all of America. We are indeed the wealthiest nation on earth — and that is only by the grace and blessing of God. In the little town where I live, I can visit five grocery stores, three dollar stores, two drug stores, twenty or more restaurants, a dozen convenience stores — all within a five-minute drive from my house. On top of that, America is still a place where, if you have a dream and if you work hard in pursuing that dream, you can make a living and be successful in life. Many in this nation and around the world have their desires satisfied and their hunger filled because of the wonderful blessings of God on America. I still thank God for the provision, freedom, and opportunity that we have in this country.
Third, I still thank God for America because there are still good people in America — good people who love their neighbors and who just want to live and let live. Notice what Paul says in First Timothy 2:1: “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men.” Yes, that is God’s command: to give thanks for all men — all people — who live in our nation. There is an abundance of talk about how America is divided by race, religion, class, and education. But there are good white people, good black people, good Latinos, good Native Americans, and good Asians in America. There are good rich people and good poor people; good Millennials and good Baby Boomers. There are good Christians and good Jews. And, yes, there are good immigrants and good refugees who have come here seeking a better life. God, in has infinite sovereignty, has seen fit that we are all in this country together at this time in history. And we ought to give thanks for all who live in this great nation.
So, this Thanksgiving weekend and throughout this entire holiday season, as you gather with family and friends — some of whom you may have political, social, or religious disagreements — choose to be thankful for America and for the blessing that it is to live in this great nation under God.
In closing, the greatest blessing that any person can have in America or anywhere else in the world is a real relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the central figure of the Gospel message. He is God’s Son who came to earth to die on the cross for our sins so that we could be saved from sin, from the punishment of sin, and so that we could have a real relationship with God. If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, please listen as I share with you how you can receive the greatest blessing of all.
Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
LISTEN: The Work You Should Be Doing Until Jesus Comes, Part 3 (Second Coming Chapel with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Luke 14:15-24
15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

The Work You Should Be Doing Until Jesus Comes, Part 3
In our last message, we focused on the unfortunate excuses of those who had been invited to the Lord’s feast. They had already been informed that the Lord was preparing a great banquet. They had advance notice. Yet, when the time came to attend, they came up with sorry excuses as to why they could not.
When the servant reports to his master what has transpired, verse 21 tells us that “the master of the house” became “angry.” The Greek word translated as “angry” means to be provoked or aroused to anger; to become exasperated. Imagine how you would feel if, after sending out invitations, you went through the time and expense to set up a great feast, and when the time came for the feast, all those who had said they would attend suddenly had an excuse as to why they couldn’t attend. Albert Barnes said, “The master was angry at the people who had slighted his invitation, who had so insulted him by neglecting his feast, and preferring their own gratification to his friendship and hospitality. So it is no wonder that God is angry with the wicked every day. So foolish as well as wicked is the conduct of the sinner, so trifling is his excuse for not repenting and turning to God, that it is no wonder if God cannot look upon their conduct but with abhorrence.”
The master’s response is not to continue pursuing those who rejected the invitation. However, his great feast would not go to waste. He tells the servant, “Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.” Again, those who had been originally invited to this feast were representative of the religiously observant Jews. These people, who should have jumped at the chance to sit at the Messiah’s banquet table, would have never sat down to eat with the poor, the maimed, the crippled, and the blind. Yet, the master extends his invitation to these. It is the same feast, but a different crowd will partake of it.
The servant must take on a sense of urgency in the fulfillment of his task of invitation. The master tells him to “go out quickly.” The Greek word translated as “quickly” means briefly in time, speedily, or rapidly in manner. The work of invitation is no leisurely task. The church today must recover a sense of urgency about evangelism. We must go quickly to inform the world about the standing invitation to the Lord’s feast. We must make plain that tomorrow is not promised to no man, and that if the Lord’s invitation is rejected today, there may very well never be another chance to accept it again.
Daniel Warner wrote:
Hark! ’tis the Shepherd’s voice I hear,
Out in the desert dark and drear,
Calling the sheep who’ve gone astray,
Far from the Shepherd’s fold away.
Who’ll go and help this Shepherd kind,
Help Him the wand’ring ones to find?
Who’ll bring the lost ones to the fold,
Where they’ll be sheltered from the cold?
Out in the desert hear their cry,
Out on the mountain, wild and high;
Hark! ’tis the Master, speaks to thee,
“Go, find My sheep where’er they be.”

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. LISTEN: The Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony #95 (A Message for the Church, with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Daniel 5:1-6
1 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
2 Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.
4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
6 Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
——-
This is an uncomfortable subject for many of us, but if you listen and take heed, this particular series can not only change your life spiritually, but it can save your life physically.
Belshazzar was the son of the last king of Babylon. We come to this passage at a time when the king, Nabonidus, is on a prolonged absence from the city and so his son, Belshazzar, sits on the throne as regent. During his regency, the army of the Medes and Persians marches against Babylon. Belshazzar, foolishly trusting in the strength of the walls of Babylon to keep the invaders out, schedules a “great feast” at the time of the assault. He invites a thousand of his lords to the feast and drinks wine with them to the point of drunkenness.
We are all familiar with what happens next: In his inebriated state, he calls for the vessels of the Hebrew Temple to be brought so that the wine can continue to be poured and drank by him, “his princes, his wives, and his concubines.” As they drink out of vessels dedicated to the worship of God, they praise the false “gods of gold, silver, brass, iron, wood, and stone.”
About this time, Belshazzar notices a disembodied hand writing on the wall across from him. This scares him so much that he quickly becomes somewhat sober and demands an interpretation. After the court astrologers fail to interpret the mysterious writing, he calls for the Jewish prophet Daniel who has, in Belshazzar’s words, “the spirit of the holy gods,” and offers him a reward to interpret the strange words, “Mene, mene, tekel, upharsin.” Daniel, of course, rejects the gifts but interprets the writing saying, “This is the interpretation of the thing: Mene; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. Tekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. Peres; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”
Unlike the passage in Ezekiel which we have looked at over the past three messages in this series, the king’s gluttony and drunkenness is not named specifically as a cause for the destruction of Babylon. However, it does show us the lifestyle of those who engage in gluttonous behavior. Gluttony and drunkenness are often coupled with partying, riotous behavior, foolishness, and idolatry. It is a well-known fact that alcohol lowers one’s inhibitions. A person in an inebriated state may do or say things that they would not otherwise do or say. If Belshazzar hadn’t been drunk, he probably never would have called for the vessels of the Temple. Being filled with food can have the same effect. We feel satisfied after a good meal, and, without the power of the Holy Spirit, that can lead to physical sin and neglect of spiritual duties. It is always good to intake food and drink with moderation so that we can remain in full control of our mental and physical state at all times.
If the Lord tarries his coming and we live, next time, we will continue looking at what the Bible tells us about overcoming gluttony, obesity, and God’s plan for man’s eating habits.
——-
PRACTICAL STEP: In “The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle,” Mike Anderson shares “essential dietary guidelines” that are the keys to the RAVE diet. He writes, “The #1 Golden Rule: Always eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. Eat whole foods that come in their natural packages and avoid foods that come in a package or can, unless they are fresh-frozen. Some of the sample menus will contain items that are canned. This is for convenience. If you can find the item in its natural state or are willing to take the time to prepare it, instead of buying it in a can, then you should do so.
“2. Always eat whole foods: In packaged goods, look for the words ‘whole,’ ‘sprouted wheat’ or ‘organic rolled oats’ in the first ingredient, not the second or third. Always eat whole-wheat pastas or whole wheat breads. Make sure the label says whole wheat, not wheat flour. Don’t let the words ‘hearty wheat,’ ‘stoned wheat,’ or ‘multigrain’ on the package fool you. Such ingredients are made from refined white flour and there’s no difference between white flour and wheat flour. Wheat flour has some caramel coloring and sounds healthier, but it’s not.”
——-
In closing, as we focus on overcoming the sin of gluttony, and managing our bodies as God intended, we must not lose sight of the most important part of our existence — our spiritual life. Even those of you who are fit, who eat right, and who exercise regularly must still address the condition of your soul. You may keep your body in perfect condition till the day you die, but you will still die — we all will, and the only thing that will matter is the condition of your soul. Is your soul in shape? Is your soul in right standing with God?
The only way to make sure of that is to trust Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and the consequences of sin. He alone can save your soul, put you in right standing with God, and ensure that you do not perish in Hell. Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, here is how you can trust Him today.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
