Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 8:28-34
28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.
31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.
32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.
33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.
34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.
——-
As we return to this passage, we are going to take a close look at the circumstances surrounding the demon-possessed men who met Jesus after He and His disciples landed on the Gerasene shore.
The first thing we notice is that they were “coming out of tombs.” These demon-possessed men lived in a graveyard. Of all the places the demons could have driven these men to live, they felt most comfortable among a symbol of their father, the devil’s greatest scheme — the introduction of death into the human race. This element of their environs highlights the ultimate work of the devil in our own lives — his path always leads to death. Jesus said the devil comes only “to steal, kill, and destroy.”
Demon-possession, or any other work of the devil, always leads to spiritual death and can often lead to physical death. Ultimately, we all die as a result of sin — that thing which Satan introduced into the world. The Bible says, “the wages of sin is death.” Those who are under the most severe cases of demonic influence can be said to be trapped in a living death. The demon-possessed men had no life of their own. Their bodies were only being used to do as the devils pleased.
Then, we notice that these demon-possessed men are cut off from the their fellow-man. The Greek word translated as “fierce” means harsh or savage; a person who is hard to approach. The demons had driven these men out of their cities, away from their families, and into the graveyard. No doubt, in those early days after their possession, mothers came and offered food; fathers came and pled with their sons to control the darkness inside them; sisters, brothers, friends came and said, ‘Remember me? Remember when we did this together? Come back to us!’
But the devil always drives away and creates division. He steals lives and destroys family ties. When we look at the world today, we see demonic influence still at work in this manner. Fathers and mothers killing their spouses and children. Neighbors killing neighbors on a mass scale. Random acts of violence that further entrench mistrust and hatred. However, Jesus came into the world to undo death and break down the divisions that had arisen not only between man and God, but between man and fellow man. No one else had been able to reach these two demoniacs; the town and their families had given up on them as a lost cause. But Jesus’ arrival on the Gerasene shore brought hope and light to the darkest of circumstances.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! LISTEN: The Scripture & the Sense: Jeremiah 15 (with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte III reads the Word of God on a daily basis and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as Matthew Henry’s Commentary On the Bible. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.
Today we are reading Jeremiah 14.
Just Jesus: More of the Greatest Things Ever Said About the Greatest Man Who Ever Lived (Volume 2)
We are pleased to bring you the second volume of “Just Jesus: The Greatest Things Ever Said About the Greatest Man Who Ever Lived.”
In this second volume, we made a special effort to include quotes about Jesus Christ from people who have lived in the past 100 years, and thus may be more familiar to the reader. You will find that many of these quotes are highlighted in different type throughout the book. These quotes are from luminaries in the entertainment, music, literary, sports, religious, business, and political arenas. We hope that the inclusion of these quotes would make the book easier for you to relate to and more enjoyable to you as you read it.
Some of these new quotes include the following:
“The purpose of life is to be found through having Christ in your life, and understanding what His plan is, and following that plan.” — Julius “Dr. J” Erving
“I had never believed in Jesus before and I wasn’t going to go for it. I never would have, but let me tell you, Jesus is alive…” — George Foreman
“I came to my Christian faith later in life and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead.” — Barack Obama
“I really don’t see a reason why you wouldn’t want to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. I mean, not only was He the greatest human being to ever walk the earth, He’s everything that I want to strive for. He’s everything that anyone should ever want to strive for.” — Sam Bradford
“One encounter with Jesus Christ is enough to change you, instantly, forever.” — Luis Palau

28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.

34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.
——-
Earlier in this passage, we saw where Jesus cast devils out of many people who were brought to Him in Capernaum. That one-verse mention was an overview that described the reality of demon-possession in the first century. Now, in the verses that we are looking at today, we have a close-up view, a front-row seat to two very real men who were possessed by very real demons and who experienced very real deliverance through Jesus Christ.
By way of introduction, allow me to share with you from Dr. John MacArthur’s commentary on this passage: “After the miraculous stilling of the storm, Jesus and His disciples continued across the Sea of Galilee to the other side. By now it was daylight and the group of boats landed in the country of the Gadarenes. Those whom Matthew calls Gadarenes were also called Gerasenes, as found in some Greek texts. The small town of Gerasa was on the northeast shore of the Sea of Galilee, about six miles across the water from Capernaum, and the steep cliffs nearby fit the geographical setting described by Matthew.
“In their accounts of this incident, Mark and Luke mention only one demon-possessed man but do not state that only one was present. For their particular purposes they chose to focus on the more dominant of the two men. The Greek word used, dai-mon-i-zo-mai, simply means to be demonized, to be under the control of a demonic spirit, without regard to the kind or degree of control. Although its accounts of demonized people reflect many different conditions and degrees of control, Scripture does not clearly distinguish between being possessed, obsessed, or oppressed by demons.
“It is significant that Jesus never blamed a person for being either diseased or demon controlled. He recognized them as victims of powers beyond their own control and as in need of deliverance, not exhortation or condemnation. As we see with these two men who were demon-possessed, the personality and voice of a demon can at will, and sometimes continuously, eclipse the personality and voice of the occupied person.”
As Jesus and his disciples landed on the other side of the Sea of Galilee, the Bible says the two demon-possessed men came out of the tombs, “exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.” We note here the location of the men: they were in tombs, or more correctly, caves that served as tombs for the nearby community. This highlights for us the ultimate work of the devil in our lives — whether that work is demon-possession or not, it always leads to death. It leads to the death of relationships — these demon-possessed men were cut off from their families, their community, and society in general. However, Jesus came into the world to break down the divisions that had arisen not only between man and God, but between man and fellow man — including the divisions fueled by demon-possession. No one else had been able to reach these two demoniacs; the town and their families had given up on them as a lost cause. But Jesus’ arrival on the Gerasene shore brought hope and light to the darkest of circumstances.

Just Jesus: The Greatest Things Ever Said About the Greatest Man Who Ever Lived REVISED and EXPANDED (Volume 1)
All New Format with Over 100 New Entries!
Your heart will almost burst with joy and praise as you read what some of the most important people of the past and present, most Christian, some even non-Christian, have said about the most important Person who ever lived. I believe that your spirit will soar to higher heights in praise of the One who died for us as you read these eloquent and powerful quotations. The mighty words contained in this book are about the greatest figure who ever graced the earth — yet our Saviour and Friend — Jesus — Just Jesus!
HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF SOME OF THE POWERFUL STATEMENTS IN THIS BOOK:
“At the end of the day, only one thing matters, and that’s Jesus, Just Jesus, and nothing else.”
“Jesus of Nazareth, without money and arms, conquered more millions than Alexander the Great, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon; without science and learning, He shed more light on things human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined; without the eloquence of school, He spoke such words of life as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet; without writing a single line, He set more pens in motion, and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art, and songs of praise than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times.” — Philip Schaff
“As the centuries pass, the evidence is accumulating that, measured by His effect on history, Jesus is the most influential life ever lived on this planet.” — Kenneth Scott Latourette
“I have a great need for Christ; I have a great Christ for my need.” — Charles H. Spurgeon
“Jesus painted no pictures. Yet some of the greatest paintings of Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci received their inspiration from Him. Jesus wrote no poetry; but Dante, Milton, and scores of the world’s greatest poets were inspired by Him. Jesus composed no music; but Haydn, Handel, Beethoven, Bach, and Mendelssohn reached their highest perfection in the symphonies and oratorios they composed in His praise. Every sphere of human greatness has been influenced by this humble carpenter of Nazareth!” — Henry Ward Beecher
“I marvel that whereas the ambitious dreams of myself, Caesar, and Alexander should have vanished into thin air, a Judean peasant–Jesus–should be able to stretch His hands across the centuries and control the destinies of men and nations.” –Napoleon Bonaparte

Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 8:23-27
23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
——-
It is difficult to find peace and quiet these days. Many of us are familiar with the daily tempests of family life and work life. We are accustomed to the storms of conflict that arise over differences of opinion, personality, or simply who has the right of way in traffic or in a crowded grocery store aisle. Even if you live and work alone, you would be hard-pressed to escape the incessant buzz of email notifications, social media updates, text messages, and news alerts. Studies have shown that the constant intake of information in this information age has contributed to a rise in stress and anxiety. You would be hard-pressed to find someone who describes their mental state as “calm.”
In this story of Jesus, the disciples, and the sudden storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus not only rebukes and calms the sea, but He calms the mental state of His disciples who had grown agitated and fearful over the storm. They thought they were going to die. They roused Jesus from sleep telling Him, “We perish.” The “great calm” brought about on the sea also gave rise to a “great calm” in their hearts. It turned their focus from the Storm to their Savior. Matthew reports that “the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!”
That shift in focus is what we need to have throughout the storms of life. We must not look on the storms that surround us, but on the Saviour who can command the storm to be still. The disciples’ focus should have been on Jesus all along. Dr. John MacArthur said, “The believer who is aware of God’s power and love has no reason to be afraid of anything. Because God both can and will take care of His children, there is no hardship or danger through which He cannot or will not take them. God’s power and love will see us through any storm, and that is the essence of what we need to know and consider when we are in trouble. Yet, every believer realizes from his own experience that knowing about God’s power and love and trusting in them do not always go together. Our weaknesses and frailties are so much a part of us that, even after we have witnessed God doing marvelous things, we still fall into doubt and fear. In fact, like Elijah after the great miracle on Mt. Carmel and the disciples after the great miracles in Capernaum, we sometimes are most afraid just after we have been overwhelmed with God’s greatness. We marvel at His greatness, but as soon as trouble comes we forget His greatness and see only the trouble.”
What is the solution? How can we get from being overwhelmed by the storm to focusing on the Savior even while we are in the midst of the storm. The solution lies in Jesus’ gentle rebuke of the disciples: “O ye of little faith?” The disciples eventually learned to ask, “Lord, increase our faith!” One father who came to Jesus in the midst of the storm of his son’s illness said, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” We must learn to remember the greatness of Jesus even in the midst of great calamity in our lives. We must remember that He gives eternal life to all those who trust Him — and what storm can be greater than death? Surely, He can and will calm our storms, strengthen us through tragedy, and one day help us make sense of the often bewildering devastation of life.
Hugh Stowell wrote:
From every stormy wind that blows,
From every swelling tide of woes,
There is a calm, a sure retreat:
‘Tis found beneath the mercy seat.
There is a place where Jesus sheds
The oil of gladness on our heads;
A place than all besides more sweet:
It is the blood-bought mercy seat.
There is a scene where spirits blend,
Where friend holds fellowship with friend;
Though sundered far, by faith they meet
Around one common mercy seat.
There, there, on eagles’ wings we soar,
And time and sense seem all no more;
And heav’n comes down, our souls to greet,
And glory crowns the mercy seat.

LISTEN: The Scripture & the Sense: Jeremiah 13 (with Daniel Whyte III)
Today we are reading Jeremiah 13.

Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Luke 14:15-24
15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

The Work You Should Be Doing Until Jesus Comes, Part 4
In our last message, we saw how the Master, after having his initial invitations to the banquet rejected, sent his servant to “go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.” These were people that none of the religious, upright crowd would have wanted to sit with at the banquet anyway. They represented the outcast and “unclean” members of Jewish society. The religious Jews, the ones who attended synagogue every week and studied the Law and the Prophets, should have been eager to sit at the Master’s banquet. Yet, they despised God’s good gift and made excuses for why they couldn’t attend.
We should not pass over the fact that the terms poor, maimed, crippled, and blind were, in the eyes of many Jews, an analog for sinful. The Jews of that day firmly believed that such misfortunes fell upon those who had sinned or who were suffering as a result of the sin of their parents. So, the Master in effect sends his servant to call, not the righteous, but the sinners to the banquet. However, the servant returns from this round of invitations — invitations that, no doubt, are eagerly accepted — to find that the banquet hall is still not full. So, the Master says to him, “Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.”
Those in the highways and hedges were representative of the Gentiles — those outside the Jewish citizenship. John Gill writes, “Since the Jews put away the word of eternal life from them, and judged themselves unworthy of it by their contradicting and blaspheming it, the Master commanded his servants to turn from them to the Gentiles. The Gentiles might be said to be ‘in the highways,’ because they were outside the commonwealth and church of the Jews. They were not admitted to civil conversation, nor to religious worship, and were left to walk on in their own ways and in their own devising and choosing. They walked in their own highway — the broad road to destruction — either following the various sects of the philosophers, or going into different practices of idolatry. The ‘hedges’ denote their state of separation from God; being alienated from His life and afar off from him and strangers from the covenants God made with the Jews.”
The Master, who is representative of Christ in this parable, tells his servant to “compel” those in the highways and hedges to come in. The Greek word translated as “compel” is a strong term, which means “to necessitate, to entreat, or to constrain.” It is our job as servants to lay upon those outside the family of God the great urgency of the invitation. Why? Because they may never get another chance to accept the invitation. There is plenty of room at the Master’s table, however, as with the Jews who were initially invited, the invitation will not be extended forever. We must compel them — Jews, Gentiles, and sinners alike — to come in.
Charles B. Widmeyer wrote:
Jesus has a table spread
Where the saints of God are fed,
He invites His chosen people, “Come and dine”;
With His manna He doth feed
And supplies our every need:
Oh, ’tis sweet to sup with Jesus all the time!
The disciples came to land,
Thus obeying Christ’s command,
For the Master called unto them, “Come and dine”;
There they found their heart’s desire,
Bread and fish upon the fire;
Thus He satisfies the hungry every time.
Soon the Lamb will take His bride
To be ever at His side,
All the host of heaven will assembled be;
Oh, ’twill be a glorious sight,
All the saints in spotless white;
And with Jesus they will feast eternally.
Jesus has a table spread
“Come and dine,” the Master calleth, “Come and dine”;
You may feast at Jesus’ table all the time;
He Who fed the multitude, turned the water into wine,
To the hungry calleth now, “Come and dine”

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
