LISTEN: The Scripture & the Sense: Jeremiah 23 (with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte III reads the Word of God on a daily basis and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as Matthew Henry’s Commentary On the Bible. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Jeremiah 23.

LISTEN: How to Pray for the Good and Faithful Saints That You Don’t Know, Part 10 (Praying Through the Bible #329 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Colossians 1:1-14

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,

2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,

4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,

5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

7 As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ;

8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.

9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

— PRAYER —

We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 328 messages in this series.

This is message #329 titled, How to Pray for the Good and Faithful Saints That You Don’t Know, Part 10.

Over the past few messages, we have looked at the specific prayer requests that Paul made for the believers in Colosse. He prayed for them: (1) to have the “knowledge of God’s will”; (2) to walk worthy of their salvation; (3) to be “fruitful in every good work”; (4) to ‘increase in the knowledge of God’; and (5) that they would be ‘strengthened with all might according to God’s glorious power.’

In our last message, we looked at the ways the mighty strength of God ought to be used in our lives; the might of God strengthens us to be longsuffering and patient. Verse 11 tells us that another way the strength of God empowers us is that it enables us to be joyful during times of longsuffering and patience. Being longsuffering and patient “with joyfulness,” is not always easy. We think of joy as something that simply comes to us, picks us up, and carries us along. However, joy does not always happen that way. Joy is very often a choice. Joy is very often a condition that stands in opposition to our circumstances. Joy is very often a state of mind in which we exist when the world around us and people around us are not reflecting that joy.

The Greek word translated as “joyfulness” in this verse is chara and it means “calm delight, exceeding gladness.” It is used throughout the New Testament to describe those who have heard the Gospel or the news of the Kingdom of Heaven being established on Earth. It is the same term used in Matthew 2:10: “When [the Wise Men] saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.” These verses show us that our joy is not based on circumstances, but on the Gospel of Christ and the good news that the Kingdom of God has come to dwell among men. As long as we keep that in mind, we can be joyful at any time.

William Burkitt said, “The cross of Christ and sufferings for Christ are unavoidable. Although they will shock an ordinary patience and constancy of mind, might — all might, power — glorious power, which is here prayed for us, and elsewhere promised to us, can and will enable us to stand under them. Glorious power will be victorious power. Patience is needful, nay, indispensably necessary, to enable a Christian to bear trials and glorify God in an afflicted condition. All patience is necessary in order to cheerfully bear our afflictions. Patience at all times, patience under all crosses, patience, if possible, without any mixture of impatience; patience that may give a man the possession of himself, and quiet the whole man, the tongue, the hand, and the heart.”

Such patience, longsuffering, and joy can be wrought in us and in others by prayer to God.

Barney E. Warren wrote:

I will sing, hallelujah, for there’s joy in the Lord,

And He fills my heart with rapture as I rest on His Word;

I will trust in His promise; I will shout, I am free;

In my blessed, loving Savior, I have sweet victory.

I will live for the Savior, I am His evermore;

I am resting in His favor, I am safe and secure;

For the light shining brighter on my path every day

Cheers my happy soul with rapture as I walk in the way.

When I reach heaven’s portals, in that land of the blest,

I shall sing with holy angels of this rest, happy rest;

I shall dwell there forever with my Lord and my King,

And with everlasting praises make those high arches ring.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have done the most important thing in life. TEXT: Matthew 8:28-34

28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.

29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.

31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.

32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.

33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.

34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.

——-

In this record of Jesus casting out demons, we have seen many strange things — men dwelling in graveyards, demons conversing with Jesus, their request to enter a herd of swine, and a stampede of suicidal swine. But, in this story, there is perhaps nothing stranger than the response of the community to these events. Jesus had delivered them from the terrorization of two demoniacs that made venturing outside the city unsafe. He restored the men, two members of their own community, to sanity. The swine-herders, who apparently had been watching these events from a safe distance, “went into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.” The Bible says, “Behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.”

What a strange reaction to such deliverance! What a strange reaction to this display of authority and power! How are we to understand the mentality of the people in this region? Dr. John MacArthur writes: “We are not told exactly what the people from the city thought of Jesus. We only know that they had a glimpse of the supernatural and it caused them to panic. They saw One who could control demons, who could control animals, and who could restore shattered minds to sanity—and they wanted nothing to do with Him.

“It is here that we find the first opposition to Jesus recorded in the gospels. The people did not ridicule or persecute Jesus; they simply asked Him to leave them alone. Perhaps they resented His righteousness exposing their sin, His power exposing their weakness, or His compassion exposing their hardness of heart. Perhaps they could not tolerate Jesus because of His perfection. But unlike the scribes and Pharisees, these people showed no interest at all in who Jesus was or in His teaching or work. They seemed totally indifferent to His person and ministry. They did not care if He was the Messiah. They did not seem to care whether His powers were good or whether He was from God. They did not care anything about Him, except that He would go away. Their rejection of Jesus was in the form of great indifference, the same indifference to God shown by most men throughout history—the indifference that wants to let God alone and to be left alone by God. The Lord was an intrusion with whom they did not want to be bothered.”

Most people today treat God this way. They don’t want God interfering with their plans. They want to live the way they like. They say, “I’m doing it my way.” If you ask them if they hate God, they would say, “No. I just don’t want him messing up what I have going on.” However, no matter how hard we try to shut Him out, in the words of Peter Larson, “God intrudes” at one point or another, and forces us to reckon with Himself.

Dr. MacArthur continues, “In great contrast to the attitude of those people, Mark tells us that one of the men who had been demon-possessed begged Jesus ‘that he might accompany Him.’ He was so grateful to Jesus for deliverance and so drawn to Him in love and adoration that he could not bear to be separated from Him. But Jesus had other plans for the man, and ‘He did not let him, but said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.”‘ Jesus sent the man back to his own people—the very people who had asked Jesus to leave—to testify- to them of the Lord’s love and mercy. The man was to be an evangelist and missionary to his own people, living testimony that the One whom they had rejected nevertheless loved and sought to redeem them. Even to those who entreat Him to depart, Jesus extends His grace.”

In this way, Jesus did not leave the people of the Gerasene region alone as they requested. He still determined to reach them, sending to them as a witness one of their own who had lived through the depths of darkness and demonic possession and had been delivered by the power of God. Whether we like it or not, whether we want Him to or not, Jesus continues to intrude in our lives because He loves us and longs for us to be delivered from darkness as well.

——-

Jesus casting out demons is described several times in the gospels. However, it is only in the case of the Gadarene men that we read of what happened to demons after they were cast out of a person. In this case, the demons had begged Jesus to let them enter a herd of swine who were feeding “a good way off.” “If thou cast us out,” they said, “suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.”

The Bible does not tell us where demons go when they are cast out. Being spirits, they are not limited by the physical dimension of space. However, in Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus describes the behavior of a demon that has been cast out: “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.”

Regarding this passage, Dr. John Walvoord and Dr. Roy Zuck state, “Satan’s ‘house’ is the body of the person who is possessed by the demon. It appears that the demons are restless and seek bodies in which to reside. When the demon left, this man’s life was changed for the better; but his life was still empty. When the demon returned, he brought others with him; and the man’s life ended in tragedy. The primary application is to the nation of Israel, especially that generation present when Jesus ministered on earth. The nation had been purged of the demon of idolatry which had plagued them in the Old Testament. But reformation was not enough. Reformation could cleanse, but it could not fill. The nation should have received the Saviour and been filled with spiritual life. Instead, the people rejected Him and the end was destruction. There is a personal application. It is not enough to clean house; we must also invite in the right tenant. The Pharisees were proud of their ‘clean houses,’ but their hearts were empty! Mere religion, or reformation, will not save. There must be regeneration, the receiving of Christ into the heart. We cannot be neutral about Jesus Christ.”

This teaching shows us that demons always seek a place of possession. They desire control over some physical aspect of the world — preferably, a person; however, in the case of the Gadarene men, they settled for swine.

Jesus permits the demons to enter the swine, telling them simply, “Go.” The Bible says, “When they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.” Why did Jesus allow the demons to enter into the swine? David Guzik says, “The fact that the demons immediately drove the swine to destruction explains that He wanted everyone to know what the real intention of these demons was. They wanted to destroy the men just as they destroyed the pigs. Because men are made in the image of God, they could not have their way as easily with the men, but their intention was just the same – to kill and destroy.”

Some have paid a lot of attention to the seeming significance of the demons being allowed to enter the swine. The popular commentary is that, since it was against the Mosaic purity regulations for Jews to eat swine, much less raise them, that Jesus was simultaneously judging the Jews in that region for their disobedience to the Law. However, it is just as likely that the herd of swine was owned by Gentiles. Either way, it must have been terrifying for the herd’s owners and the people standing by to see hundreds of swine, suddenly driven mad, stampeding down a slope, and hurling themselves off a cliff into the sea. The people who witnessed that event would have never forgotten it.

In that moment, Jesus showed the ultimate outcome of demonic influence and the ultimate end of the demons themselves. Just as the swine “perished in the waters,” those who are not freed from Satan’s chains will perish as well. And the demons who drove the swine to destruction will also end up in eternal destruction and perdition.

Bernard of Morlaix wrote:

The world is very evil,

The times are waxing late,

Be sober and keep vigil,

The judge is at the gate.

The judge who comes in mercy,

The judge who comes in might,

Who comes to end the evil,

Who comes to crown the right.

Arise, arise, good Christian,

Let right to wrong succeed;

Let penitential sorrow

To heavenly gladness lead,

To light that has no evening,

That knows nor moon nor sun,

The light so new and golden,

The light that is but one.

O home of fadeless splendor,

Of flowers that bear no thorn,

Where they shall dwell as children

Who here as exiles mourn;

’Midst power that knows no limits,

Where wisdom has no bound,

The beatific vision

Shall glad the saints around.

LISTEN: The Story of Jesus and the Graveyard Demoniacs, Part 6 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 625 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 992 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)

——-

Jesus’ confrontation with the Gadarene demoniacs — or, more correctly, the demons possessing the Gadarene men — show us important contrasts between the work of God and the work of the devil. We have seen how demon possession or demonic influence always leads to spiritual death and very often leads to physical death. Demonic influence is also the root of most division and conflict in the world. Satan is the divider-in-chief, and whenever he can influence one person or one group of people to oppose another, he will. Thus, the Gadarene men in this passage had been driven from their families and communities and were abiding in a graveyard.

The demons’ conversation with Jesus reveals other important workings of the demonic realm: such as the fact that the devil’s minions are restless. They agitate and are agitators. Peace, rest, and calm are foreign concepts in the kingdom of darkness. That is why the devils “beseech” (or beg) Jesus to send them into a herd of swine feeding “a good way off.” They cannot fathom the thought of being cast into the ether; they long for a physical form to possess, consume, and control. In contrast, God honors the free will of His creation and only fills those who willingly come to Him with His Spirit. He forces no man into salvation or His service. But, if he can, the devil will take and use without regard to the well-being of the person.

The Church of Satan, which pops up in the news every month or so nowadays, claims that one of its core tenets is the embracing of the spirit of rebellion, freedom, and rejection of authority. Basically, they want what the Book of Judges describes as every man doing what is right in his own eyes. Ironically, however, it is God’s people who are truly free because they have willingly submitted to God. Those under the influence of the devil are in bondage because the devil does not care about the effects of sin on the person. He only wants to use the person to further his own dark ends.

We must also note that demons have no power except that which they are allowed. The demons “besought” or begged Jesus to send them into the pigs; they could not do even this on their own. This harkens back to Satan who had to get permission from God to afflict Job. Tertullian remarked, “If a legion of devils had not power over a herd of hogs, how much less have they over Christ’s flock of sheep.” This truth is important to remember when we face off against Satan. If we are in Christ, the devil has no power over us except that which we allow. We give the devil opportunity to influence our lives through sin, lack of prayer, lack of Bible reading, lack of church attendance, and fellowshiping too often with those who remain in the world. The Bible would not instruct us to resist the devil if he could not be resisted. The devil’s power has always been limited and he is subject to the power of God which resides in each and every one of us.

Maltie D. Babcock wrote:

This is my Father’s world,

And to my listening ears

All nature sings, and round me rings

The music of the spheres.

This is my Father’s world:

I rest me in the thought

Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas–

His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world:

The birds their carols raise,

The morning light, the lily white,

Declare their Maker’s praise.

This is my Father’s world:

He shines in all that’s fair;

In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,

He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father’s world:

O let me ne’er forget

That though the wrong seems oft so strong,

God is the Ruler yet.

This is my Father’s world:

Why should my heart be sad?

The Lord is King: let the heavens ring!

God reigns; let earth be glad!

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law.

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him.

I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! LISTEN: How to Overcome Temptation, Part 104 (Anger and Wrath) (Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class #228 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

Welcome to the Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class. I am Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society and pastor of Gospel Light House of Prayer International. The purpose of this time together is to teach young believers everything they need to know about their faith in Jesus Christ and provide them with the knowledge they need to live victorious Christian lives.

Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13:

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

— PRAYER —

Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 103 (Anger and Wrath)”

In this section of our Onward Christian Soldiers discipleship class, we are looking at specific temptations that are, as the Bible says, “common to man.” We are looking at what the Bible says about these sins so we can be aware of its dangers and so that we can hide Scripture in our hearts to use when we are tempted.

The sin that we are looking at today is the sin of anger and wrath. This is the fifth sin in a list of 12 temptations that comes from two sources — one ancient and one modern. The first source is a list that was developed by monks in the early church called “the seven deadly sins” or the “cardinal sins.” The second source is a Barna survey from 2011 which tracked the top temptations Americans admitted to struggling with.

Today, we are looking at Proverbs 15:18. (Remember, the text of this lesson is made available online after each class, so you can go to our website Gospellighthouseofprayer.com, click the “Onward Christian Soldiers” banner on the home page, and begin to learn these verses by heart throughout the week.)

Proverbs 15:18

A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

– – – – –

On last week, we looked at the “wrathful man who stirs up strife.” In contrast to such an individual is the man who is “slow to anger” who “appeaseth strife.” Another translation reads that such a person “calms disputes.” This person embodies the spirit of the peacemaker whom Jesus said “will be called the children of God.”

Those who engage in peacemaking — whether in the family, in communities, in churches, between nations, or between groups of people divided by race, economics, education, or class — are doing the work of God who sacrificed and sent His only begotten Son into the world to make peace with man. Upon Jesus’ birth, the angels sang, “Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, goodwill to all men.” We all ought to strive to be people who foster goodwill and peace with others and among others without compromise and disobedience.

First Corinthians 15 speaks of those who have the spirit of love or “charity” as not being easily provoked. A true Christian servant will seek ways to defuse potentially explosive situations by setting the example and responding to negative issues in a godly manner and sometimes in godly anger. Followers of Christ endeavour to promote peace without compromising or accepting fake peace which is only the covering up of strife and not the resolving of it.

If you struggle with anger or wrath, take this passage to heart and begin to use it the next time you face that temptation.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward.

I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
