“It is better to be a woman than a wife, and do not degrade your sex by making the whole of your existence turn on the pivot of matrimony.”

The Old Farmer’s Almanac, 1876, in an article advising women to educate themselves and learn skills and not rely on simply finding husbands.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac turns 225 this year, by the way. I have the 2017 issue right here, and it is predicting a very cold winter. Can’t wait.

“Evidence from the study suggests that coastal cities like New York may only have a few decades of habitability left. As for whether there is anything we can do to stop or slow the process, Eric Rignot, one of the study’s co-authors, wrote his own study last year that concluded that the glacial melt is now “unstoppable.””

You Don't Own Your Home and Never Will - Pete Sisco - Liberty.me

You Don't Own Your Home and Never Will - Pete Sisco - Liberty.me:

…..“Moreover, the terms and conditions under which you occupy “your” home are a further burden to you. You can’t add onto the home without permission, you can’t subdivide the land without permission. You can only have certain pets and only a certain number of them. You must maintain the home to a certain standard. Violation of any rule can cause you to lose the home and be evicted for repeated non-compliance with State orders. (After all, they are the true owners.)”

Buck Owens - Streets of Bakersfield (original)

When I discovered Buck Owens and my life changed, I thought Country & Western music was one thing.

Nope.

Buck is Western music. The two are simpatico (my new favorite word), but not the same thing. Western music developed out of country, which was from the South. In West Texas, elements of swing were added, not to mention steel guitar for miles, and a brisk beat.

It migrated even further West and was perfected in Bakersfield, California, most notably by our hero, Buck Owens.

You will notice that even the sad songs in Western music aren’t all that sad, what with that brisk beat. It’s because they lived in the West rather than the South. How a happy song was ever written in the South I’ll never know. Perhaps heat exhaustion?

Me, I wouldn’t never go to any of these places because they are too hot. I live way up North, far away from these hellholes, and I am totally jonesing for some snow.

Just a month to go, about!

”It’s important to have goals in life, but the thing you have to learn, in having a goal, is to not to set an impossible goal, something too high you can never reach. You need to have a series of smaller goals that you can accomplish, and slowly work your way up. This is what I have done. My goal right now: I want to be the All-Being, Master of Time, Space, and Dimension. Then I want to go to Europe.” - Steve Martin

Happy 71st, Steve!

My dog Duke. Dukey, I usually call him. My god, I have never bonded with a dog so much in my whole life, and I have had dogs pretty much the whole way, since I was a little kid.

This dog, though. Man.

He has a heart murmur, just like me. He hates people telling him what to do, just like me. He loves sleeping for most of the day, just like me. We’re simpatico.

He is old. 14-15 years old according to vet estimates. At the end of his life, and I can see it. With dogs, it goes faster. A year ago, he was much better. He is riddled with arthritis. He has cataracts, so his sight is compromised. And personally, I don’t think he can hear very well.

He is a sweetheart tho, and sleeps with me. He is very affectionate, which is uncommon with his breed. I carry him up and down the stairs. His appetite is very good. He has painkillers for his arthritis.

But I know. One day…
