“You either lead by example or you don’t lead at all.”

I’m a quote guy. I love ‘em. Little pre-packaged nuggets of wisdom. No heavy lifting required. And every once in a while, I come by one that stops me in my tracks. That’s what happened today when I stumbled across this quote: “You either lead by example or you don’t lead at all.” It’s from a book called The Leadership Challenge, by James Kouzes and Barry Posner.

The simple truth of that sentence is a bit arresting, isn’t it?

I can’t think of anyplace where this truism holds more true than with...

Guest Blog: Culture’s Most Important Ingredient

Are you creating a great culture or a toxic brew?

I once worked at a super hip downtown NYC entertainment company as manager of a new division. Before you reached our floor, you could hear the music booming from the lobby. Upon getting off the elevator, you might have wondered if the receptionist was going to take your name or offer you a cocktail. When you walked to your office, you might see a fashion model or the next Jay-Z. We had our own enormous health club, which was probably the most sophisticated workout space below 23rd Street. We...

Beyond Compliance: How HR Can Help Build a Best-in-Class Safety Culture

Safety programs grew out of disasters like the Triangle Fire

The final count in the Triangle Fire was 146 lives lost.

Employees think crowdsourcing can fix the annual review process. We talk a lot around here about the merits of crowdsourcing—specifically, about what a strong solution it is for talent management and for breathing new life into the stagnant annual performance review process. So when we were tossing around ideas about a theme for this Summer’s Globoforce Workforce Mood Tracker report, someone suggested we put that assertion to the test, and ask employees themselves what they think is wrong with reviews, and how to fix them. It was sort of a no-brainer.

So th...
