Culture is a network, not a hierarchy
Last year at this time I blogged about six key themes that would be affecting HR in 2013. Those themes were indeed hot topics throughout the year and will continue to be important trends for 2014.
This year I want to look at just one theme. (One massive paradigm shift, actually.) It has been rolling into how we do business for some time now, and it’s beginning to hit critical mass in human capital management. 2014 is likely the year that it takes off.
What is it? The shift from hierarchy to net...

Ten Favorite Blog Posts of 2013
This week, we gathered a list of our most popular blog posts of this year, and in the process we rediscovered some of the other posts we created this year that flew more under the radar.
I thought in honor of the (too-rapidly) approaching end of the year, I’d highlight some of my personal favorite of those blog posts from 2013, in case you missed them!
How to Sidestep the Generation Gap
Reconciling the needs of different age groups in the workplace is becoming an important topic in HCM. This pos...

What are you doing on January 9-10?
Got some fun post-holiday plans? I do! On January 9-10, I will have the honor of speaking at the IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) conference on Employee Engagement in Denver Colorado. While I admit that the prospects of the Mile High City in January might be a little daunting, I’m so excited about the topic that I’m happy to pack my mittens and scarf and brave it!
This is shaping up to be a great event for anyone who has an interest in employee engagement. (And it is...

A Tale of Two Workforces
Or, Why Contingent Employees Need Engagement, Too.
Charles Dickens knew all about unfortunate employees. His A Christmas Carol character, Bob Crachit, may be the most famously exploited permanent employee in all of literature, partly because Dickens himself was something of a social crusader in his day for better work conditions.
Thankfully there aren’t many employers like Ebeneezer Scrooge left. But I can’t help but think, if Dickens had been born in 1952 instead of 1812, the famous author mig...

People Analytics and the Wave of the Future
Just in case you missed it, I feel compelled to blog today about a terrific article that was posted on the Atlantic Monthly’s site last week. It is all about big data and human resources, and the rise of people analytics, and well worth a read.
“Predictive statistical analysis, harnessed to big data,” writes author Don Peck, “appears poised to alter the way millions of people are hired and assessed.” That may not be news to most of us, but Peck’s article is comprehensive and informative and pa...

Are Your Employee Awards Black-Friday Enabled?
It’s Thanksgiving time here in the United States. So you might expect that this week I’d be blogging about gratitude, thankfulness, and pie. (Mmm, pie.) Butwe covered gratitude last week, so I’ve decided to skip right ahead to another important tradition that takes place this week. Shopping! Make way for Black Friday.
For those who live overseas, Black Friday has become a huge shopping phenomenon in the U.S., where fantastic and unexpected prices on consumer goods brings out the deal-seekers i...

The Power of Workplace Gratitude: A Brief Bibliography
This past Tuesday Jennifer Sartor and I hosted a webinar for the Chief Learning Officer magazine about the science of gratitude. The webinar looked at the amazing scholarship around gratitude and its impact not only on us as individuals but also on our organizations and their business results. (Watch it here!)
As a follow up to that webinar (and in honor of being a week away from Thanksgiving) we’ve put together a little bibliography of the studies we presented, with links to the abstracts—or...
