Trauma Triage: How to Help Your Culture Survive a Merger

What is holding your culture together?

One of the most exciting, terrifying and intensely traumatic experiences any company can experience has to be a merger or acquisition. If you’re about to experience one, or even in the midst of one, you’re likely feeling pretty apprehensive about what’s coming your way.

When it comes to M&As, company culture is a true double edged sword. A culture clash (or even a unified culture of negativity) can gut your organization from the inside, and often ensure the outright failure of the merger. But...

The Witness Effect: How Social Recognition and Gratitude Impact Everyone

People who witness gratitude aspire to better themselves. As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve been researching and digging around in current scholarship for the webinar we are hosting on November 19, at 2pm EST. (It’s called The Science of Gratitude: A Recipe for a Happier Workplace.)

One of the interesting things I have run across is the work of UNC professor Barbara Fredrickson. She has done a lot of research not only on the power of giving and receiving gratitude, but also the impact on those who merely witness positive interchanges in their workplace....

What Organizational Virtuousness Is — and Why You Want It

Virtuousness is typically something we think of as old fashioned–like this Allegory of Virtue and Riches by Godfried Schalcken.

Virtue isn’t really something people talk much about these days. It tends to call to mind pictures of pious saints or innocent maids all-in-a-row.

So imagine my surprise while I was researching our Nov 19th webinar on the Science of Gratitude, and the topic of “company virtuousness” kept cropping up. Never one to resist a word challenge, I started to dig a little deepe...

5 Recognition Moments that Changed History

“Employees should be happy they are employed.” “Why should I have to thank someone for doing their job?” “Praise makes no difference.” These are some of the sad excuses leaders sometimes make for not recognizing, encouraging and appreciating their employees enough.

As crazy as it sounds, there are still folks out there who think praise and public encouragement don’t make a difference. Allow me to present five cases from the history books to help change their minds. In each of these five instan...

Happiness, Flow, and How to Be a Better Leader

One of the more interesting notions to come out of the field of positive psychology is the idea of “flow.” A term in workplace psychology, flow has been described as the “secret to happiness” and is far more important than money in driving motivation at work.

Flow is, in a nutshell, what some might describe as “clicking” or “hitting your stride” or “firing on all cylinders.” It’s likely you’ve experienced it—if not at work, then perhaps while playing a sport or involved in something creative.

T...

10 Things CEOs Can Do to Protect the Talent Pipeline

CEOs can nurture the talent pipelineCEOs care deeply about people metrics and talent management. In fact, according to PwC’s 2013 CEO Study, a majority of CEO’s are “particularly anxious” about the shortage of key skills in their companies, and the fierce competition for global talent. And in the , CEOs around the world rated human capital as their #1 challenge for the coming year.

Perhaps this is because they have become acutely aware in recent years that the ability to hire, develop and ret...

How to Construct an HR Dashboard That Will Wow the C-Suite

Man holding a tablet with a chart

Companies today run on metrics. You’ve surely sat in enough meetings to know that most departments in most companies keep dashboards to highlight their performance and to red-flag their issues. That’s not just because charts are pretty. (Although it certainly doesn’t hurt if they are.) Dashboards shine a light on your successes and your challenges—a light that often illuminates a path to the future. That’s because data is a language most senior leaders speak fluently. And if you want their at...
