TGIF--Have a Roaring Good Day!
This came up on Flickr this morning...and I didn't know that it had a blurb yet, so here 'tis! I have one more final look at it before it goes to press! Woohoo! I'll give a little roar with excitement!
October 2012 by Sourcebooks Savage Hunger (Heart of the Jaguar #1) by Terry SpearIn the heat of the jungle, jaguars are clawed, dangerous, and hungry for love. With hopes of overcoming night terrors and thanking the man who saved her life, Kathleen McKnight returns to the Amazon. A jaguar at heart, Connor Anderson doesn't just protect her, but wants to claim her for his own.
And Donna shared this with me and I had to share it with you all!!! It just goes to show that dogs better stay out of a wolves' territory, unless they're invited! :)
I'll be at the Book Boost some time today.
I've autographed books at Hastings last night, a couple at B&N, though am trying to set up a book signing, and hope to do some more today at Walmart and Books-a-Million!
I was supposed to be off today, but have to run to work to help out. Argh. I need to write!
Have a wonderful TGIF!!!

Whoever Would Have Thought It Would Come to This!

I often am asked the question, when did you decide to become a writer?
I've always written stories, always made up stories to share, so being a writer is just part of being me.
It's like asking an artist when they decided to draw. It's in their blood.
The question I guess should be: When did you decide to submit your first work for publication?
Eons ago. Before typewriters were invented. When knights were still slaying dragons. When the Crusades were still going on. And werewolf trials were not a thing of the past.
Okay, not quite that far back, but yes, before personal computers, the Internet, Word Perfect and MicroSoft Word. Before people were running around with tiny handheld phones that didn't have to be attached to the wall to work.
Which meant? I used the typewriter. Now, admittedly, that was much better than writing on paper with quill and inkwell. But still, mistakes are mistakes and I make a lot while typing. Imagine the benefits of the computer now, compared to before. The ease of moving one section to another with a cut and paste. The ease of deleting a line and reinserting another. The ease of finding words to replace ones I'm using too frequently with a built-in thesaurus. The ability to do spell check without looking it up in a dictionary. Or when I can't even get close to a phrase or properly spelling the word, just do a Google search and voila! That's what it looks like. Google will even tell me: Did you mean???
Of course! That's just what I meant!
I was writing children's stories at first, so it was easier as they weren't as long. But I didn't have the fancy correcto typewriter, just a piece of white tape that I'd stick in while I retyped a word, and the white powder would flake off. So I tried to ensure each page didn't have mistakes, but sometimes...
I did write by hand, by the way. I found it easier sometimes to get scenes down, and rework them before I had to put them on the typewriter and try so hard not to make any mistakes. Did any of you take typing up in school?
I hated it, yet I was always glad that I had taken it because it truly did help over the hunt and peck method my grandfather used. :) Although I have to admit he had two of the fastest fingers on the west coast.
I did cut and paste when I was using the typewriter, by the way. I'd type my pages and literally cut and tape my sentences to a blank piece of paper when I wanted them to be in a different order. Then I'd type the whole story over again.
So when the personal computers happened???
No, I didn't immediately begin to work on a story. I was still working on teddy bears, earning awards, and my first thought was I wanted to get them on the Internet. I wanted to share them with the world. So I did!
And I found computer role-playing games. I was still raising two little kids and homeschooling them and working at the US Army Reserves, so I wasn't idle. And then?
Divorce happened.
And that was the catalyst that changed my whole world. The first weekend my kids went to stay with their father was the first day that I began my real writing journey. I began to write a western historical romance and two years later, I stopped writing when my father died, but after publishing his 13th Mission about his WWII bombing mission when he was shot down and held prisoner by the Germans for 16 months in the EX-POW Bulletin, I never stopped writing.
Which brings me to today.
I think back to when I was working on active duty at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey as a personnel officer, working on my advanced course in personnel by mail and taking classes at Monmouth University to earn my Masters in Business Administration and how I had no time except to do assignments and work and go to school, and play with my adopted kitten.
If someone had asked me then if I was planning on writing a book...a dozen books...a couple of dozen books, more...I would have smiled and thought they were crazy.
I have nearly 50 books either published/self-published/or works-in-progress.
I tell myself: You've come a long way, baby!
Here's a little inspiration for you--hot military man in a salute to the flag. Think he's one of the gang in A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing? I think he's getting ready to shift.
Have a super Wednesday!

Real Men Wear Kilts!

I'm at Cindy's Love of Books with giveaways today!
http://cindysloveofbooks.blogspot.com/2012/03/q-with-terry-spear.html
And here's her review!!
http://cindysloveofbooks.blogspot.com/2012/03/review-seal-in-wolfs-clothing.html
All I can say about this book is "OMG". Wow I loved, loved loved this book.
I am not sure if its just me or not but I always worry when I read a series that the next book won't be as good as the previous one and that I won't love the books anymore but one thing I have discovered since reading Terry Spear's Wolf Series is that I don't have to worry about that because Terry some how manages to out do the previous book and just when I think I love the previous books I end up reading a new one and loving it more.
Out of the whole wolf series I have to say that I love them all. She has great characters and great chemistry in them all. I have to say even though its not possible to shape shift her books all make it seem possible and believable.
I can hands down spend a day reading Terry's books. I have a hard time putting them down and I just need to read what happens. This book was no exception. I started it early in the morning and read it all day. Trying to read slowly so that I can savour the book because the next one in the series (book 10), A Howl for the Highlander, A Highland Wolf Wedding (book 11) and Silence of the Wolf (book 12) aren't coming out until 2013.
Thankfully though, Terry has a new series coming out called the Jaguar Series and the first book, Savage Hunger will be coming out in October 2012. I can't wait to read that new series. ~~Cindy's Love of Books
And here are some more terrific reviews!
http://romancejunkiesreviews.com/artman/publish/paranormal/A_Seal_in_Wolf_s_Clothing.shtml
Finn Emerson is one of Hunter Greymere's former Navy SEALS team mates. On the search for a gray wolf that has almost taken out one of their comrades and endangered another, Finn believes that the next target is Hunter. But when Finn finally tracks him down, he discovers that Hunter has just left on his two week honeymoon. Suspecting that the assassin will target Hunter's sister, Meara, he is determined to keep her safe. He has been attracted to Meara for a long time, but as one of Hunter's team mates, he knows she is off limits. Besides, she is a handful and known for her impulsive actions whenever she seeks to right a wrong.
With her brother away, Meara Greymere is in charge of the five cabins that make up the cabin resort her brother owns. An alpha wolf, she is on the lookout for a mate. So she takes this time to book only alpha bachelors into the cabins with a whole new selection of prospects for the second week. She cannot deny being attracted to Finn, but as a Navy SEAL, he is not even a possibility. She is already upset at the way he pops up from time to time to take Hunter away on a mission. But in reality, the missions are usually contracted by Hunter.
After taking her brother and his bride to the airport, Meara returns to her cabin, immediately becoming aware of the scent of a wolf in her home. But before she can search for the intruder, her first renter arrives.
Finn is busy placing surveillance bugs in Meara's cabin when she arrives home earlier than expected. Hearing her speak to a male who seems to be interested in her, he makes it look as if he and Meara are lovers and have spent the night together. Once the new arrival leaves for his cabin, Finn explains the danger to Meara and gives her a choice; she either goes with him to a safe house or spends the time with Hunter and his bride on their honeymoon. Given little choice, especially after a body bearing the same identity as her new renter is discovered, she agrees to accompany him. But as they spend time together and passions rise, Finn discovers that he wants to do more with Meara than protect her. But is he willing to give up his adventurous life to mate with her?
An exciting read, A SEAL IN WOLF'S CLOTHING, the ninth novel in author Terry Spears' WEREWOLF series, is an action-packed, passionate paranormal romance that I hated to see end. Meara is seeking a mate, but she does not consider the Navy SEALS as candidates because they are always running off on dangerous assignments. She wants her mate to settle down with her. Finn cannot imagine giving up his adventurous life, but the more time he spends with Meara, the more he finds life without her unimaginable. Suspenseful, sexy and exhilarating are just a few of the adjectives to describe this delightful tale of a hunky Navy SEAL werewolf and the feisty female werewolf he cannot resist. Infused with passion, sexual tension, romance, danger, surprising plot twists, handsome Navy SEALS, werewolves and true love, this story is definitely a keeper – one you will not want to miss! A SEAL IN WOLF'S CLOTHING can be read as a standalone, even though it is part of a series. In fact, this is the only book of the WEREWOLF series that I have read. But I look forward to reading the rest. ~~ Romance Junkies
http://mindingspot.blogspot.com/2012/03/seal-in-wolfs-clothing-by-terry-spear.html
I've been a fan of Terry since her beginning days of the werewolf. There are several things I've come to expect from her stories but the biggest two are that she has strong, flawed characters that you can't help but adore and enough action to fulfill even the biggest diehard's fantasies. Not to mention, she always tosses in enough heat to throw the most seasoned chef right out of his own kitchen.
I'm happy to say that Terry hasn't lost her touch. The searing power between the two main characters was enough to make me, Little Miss No Loverockets Please, tingle and blush. The characters definitely didn't disappoint either. They're strong and flawed and every second with them is a blast.
Now we get to my favorite part, the action. This is no simple romance, people. We're dealing with some dangerous beasts who have no problem ripping each other's throats out if the need arises. In this book, Meara's being targeted by an unknown assassin. Actually, one man controlling several assassins. The problem is that you don't know why or who the bad guys are versus the good guys. Thankfully, you don't get to figure it out until the end, either! I love it! Another more than well-done book, Terry! Thank you! ~~ Minding Spot

This was my favorite of the series so far. I loved Finn and Meara together. I really liked how Meara decide to find herself a mate by using the family's cabins but gets more then she bargained for with her little scheme. Add in hunky SEAL Finn and you just knew sparks were gonna fly. All the secondary characters were just as interesting as the two MCs. Ms. Spear really knows how to write a fantastic shifter book with sexy heroes/heroines with lots of chemistry. I can't wait to read more in this series.

When I Got THE CALL!
Authors often talk about when they got THE CALL and it generally means they sold a book. Often, their first book, and what they were doing at the time. How they responded, what they felt afterward.
The RITA/Golden Hearts awards are coming up for the members of Romance Writers Association, and this is another time when we hear that writers have received that all important CALL. I always am hopeful each year that when I get home from work, I'll have one of those from Houston. But no such luck so far. Still, I'm always a little a flutter, and hopeful.
Then there are smaller chapter contests where winners receive THE CALL. And also contracting with the all important agent that will prompt THE CALL.
So you see, there are all kinds of reasons why the phone jingling can be good news. Not just another political hopeful asking for your vote, or some other solicitor intruding on your privacy.
Here's what happened before I received MY CALL.
Every once in a while I'd check Amazon ranking for A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing, and when I saw it had reached #1 on the fantasy, ghost category, I took a screen shot. Just for posterity. The figures go up and down all the time. Mostly up. Down is better!
I wondered if reaching #1 on Amazon might have been an indicator of sales all over. But I've been told in the past that Amazon's sales were only about 1% of all the sales. I didn't check B & N online. I just thought that the book was doing fantastically well on Amazon, and that was that. It would go back up and that was that also. :)
On V-Day, March 15, which I've got to remember forever and ever...I was trying to get my blog posts finished. I had two sites I was on that I had to get the links to and share the news about more giveaways. It was my long night at work, so I was trying to get a million things done that morning, since I was off. I was working on Savage Hunger edits. I knew I wouldn't be able to do anything that night because I'd get home so late and then I'd be back at work all the next day.
Rachel Firasek, a local author who had been in my local chapter, and who I celebrated over lunch with on Saturday, wishing ALL of you could have been there too!!!....had sent me this, excited that Amazon had made A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing an editor's pick for romance for March!!!

I was thrilled, busy still with trying to get blogs done, and a million other emails finished. I had just announced about SAVAGE HUNGER and it's beautiful cover the day before to all the loops so was still responding to comments about that.
And then....
At 9:15, I remember the time because normally I would have been at work and missed the call, the phone did its little musical jingle and I ran to get it, expecting another nuisance call, or maybe a call from my son or daughter, but they're both at work, so mostly figured it was an unwanted call.
Sourcebooks stood out on the Caller ID.
My first thought was that Deb was giving me my editorial notes for A Howl for the Highlander . I was thinking I needed to get a pen and paper so I could start scribbling stuff down furiously.
I picked up the phone and said, "Hello?"...thinking I REALLY should have grabbed pen and paper first.
"Maybe you should sit down," she said.
I HADN'T expected her to say those five little words.
I knew it had to be good news. In stories, if someone tells you that, it's bad news. If you have to sit down, often there's been a death in the family, or someone's in the hospital--near death. It's amazing how many things go through your mind when you're hit with something you don't expect.
But I knew it had to be good news coming from Sourcebooks. Silly me wasn't even thinking of lists. I was thinking how I couldn't sit down as there were no chairs close to where the land line is hooked to the wall. I was thinking when I usually received a good news call from my editor that Sourcebooks was buying another of my books. But I still have 5 I'm working on and I can't submit any until I finish some of these up. So it COULDN'T be that!
I'm thinking, screw the chair, what's the news?
I heard her say, "Bestsellers list."
I don't remember how I reacted over the phone. I'm really an introvert. It takes me a while to process things. I didn't even really hear what list I'd made. I sort of figured it had to be A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing, though I'm not sure I even heard Deb say that.
I remember thinking that it couldn't be for a release that had been out in December, Dreaming of the Wolf. When it comes to lists, since I've never been on one, I'm not really all that knowledgeable. But I figured it had to be the current book. But I also was thinking, wouldn't it be too soon too tell? It had only been out a week. How could it have received THAT many sales in a week?
"Wow," I think I said. I honestly can't remember. I was stunned. Thrilled. Ecstatic.
I was ready to hang up and post the news to the world. But wait!!! I didn't know which list I had made!!! Thankfully, I had the presence of mind, somehow, to ask, "Which list?"!
"The USA Today bestseller's list!" she said.
Poor Deb. I can't even remember if I thanked her right away. I know I didn't thank the staff and CEO and owner of Sourcebooks, Dominique Raccah, for taking the chance with me back in 2008 (April 1, you know April Fool's Day!) with my first release of Heart of the Wolf that was their first romance book that made Publisher Weekly's Best Book of the Year. Or for continuing to buy the series! Or for buying the new jaguar shifter series.
I know I said something about Finn being a SEAL and those remarkable abs helped to sell the book. LOL Hey, even I ran my hand over the cover when I finally received my copies as if I could magically feel them!
It was time to get back to the real world, thank Deb (I think I thanked her!), and I had to tell my kids, first thing. I couldn't get hold of either of them.
Although my daughter chided me because she'd called my cell phone a million times and it was in the car. My son was at work and couldn't take calls. Who to tell? Who to tell?
My critique partners first. Betty Womack, Randy Bruskrud (who I missed meeting at conference one year), Judy Gilbert, Pam Tyner, Tamara Hunter, Vonda Sinclair and Annie Rayburn (both of whom I met at the Orlando Nationals and had a ball with, and hoping to meet the other rebels soon!). Through family deaths and the ups and downs of this business, we've all been there for each other for years.
No one responded to my email. Everyone is required to be at their desks waiting for my email when I get THE CALL. It's just mandatory.
I tried calling work. No one answers the phone before 10 AM.
By the time I finally started announcing it to the world, my hands were shaking, I had tears in my eyes, and thought, darn it, I have to go to work in a couple of hours. I can't look like I've been crying!
Tears of joy.
Oh, I remember telling Deb I would love to call work and tell them I had to take the day off. And my coworkers would have killed me. We were really short-handed all week at work and had huge amount of business because of Spring Break and so stressed to the max already. But boy, what I wouldn't have given to take the day off!
It's taken over 15 years of writing, revising, submitting, dealing with agent and editor rejections, with close calls, with my first two young adult books that were picked up, edited, then dumped when the publisher dropped their YA line a month before my first book was due to be published. With many encouraging words from editors with different houses that loved my voice, but couldn't buy because I had too much seriousness (in my comedy romances), too much light-heartedness (in my vampire novellas), too much romance (in my fantasy)...I really figured I could get published if: I kept writing.
I had tons of agent rejections. Not for me. Not for me. Not for me. You're work has merit, but quit sending me anymore of your queries. Not for me. Not for me. Not for me.
I talked with an agent who represents one of my author friends and she was a delight to talk with! I have nothing against agents, and I think that some really do earn their weight in gold. But for me, it just has never worked out. I've known authors who have sold to a publishing house and then asked an agent to represent them. And it worked! I've even tried that, but the agents still didn't want me. I really am easy to work with! :) But you have to find an agent who believes in you, in your work, who LOVES your work as much as your editor does, and without that, it won't work. So I'll probably continue to be agentless for a very long time! Maybe forever!
But that's okay. Because what's most important is that I continue to write!
I seemed to always have been the proverbial square peg that couldn't fit into the cylindrical hole...
Until Sourcebooks took a chance with my wolves.
My Rebel Romance Writer critique partners said that someday I would have a truckload of manuscripts to ship to NY that would all be bought and I'd have it made.
Well, instead I've self-published a lot of those novellas and novels that I sent out to a couple of agents or editors and received rejections for, figured, next story and wrote something else. I always, always knew that if it wasn't this story that sold, it could be the next one. And so instead of wearing out the last manuscript by submitting it to a million different houses and agents, I'd just write a new story.
I told myself that with every story, my writing got better. That I learned more about how to polish them. That I was learning. And even today, I can never be complacent. I have to remind myself to hook, or add conflict, or setting details, to deepen character motivations, to make the story have emotional impact.
Seeing other authors make the lists or receive other wonderful recognition, I always felt encouraged to keep on trying and maybe one day I would too.
It's all about persevering, keeping the faith, and working hard at it.
I have all of my readers to thank, because without readers, I wouldn't be where I am today.
On the USA TODAY's bestseller's list!!!
Oooorah!
Now, with that off my chest, I've got to get down to brass tacks, or kilts and claymores and write some more on A Highland Wolf Wedding, because I just bet you want another story. Right???
Love you all! And thanks!
Terry

And thanks!

New News Gets Old Fast

USA Today posted A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing on their site!
I've spent the morning trying to post the news to the colleges and high school I attended, newspapers, and all that stuff. I NEED to finish Savage Hunger edits! I have 100 pages left to go.
But in the news business, new news gets old really fast so you have to report it before it's old news and someone with new news transplants you!

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy St Patty's Day whether you have an Irish root in your body or not!!! May the luck always be with you!

My grandfather's family were from Ireland and my grandmother's family had Irish roots also. That's why I love potatoes.
:)

And mints. They're like green, right??? :)
Have a super great Saturday!

Jack Stanton can't believe the clerk gave him an occupied room at the Shady Villa Inn, but worse, he was ready to ravage the woman in that bed—until he realized his mistake. Now the woman he thinks is Josephine claims to be some other woman—and though he could never abide by Josephine's fickle ways, this Lisa Welsh intrigues him like no other. Still, if she isn't Josephine, he figures he best help her find her way back to where she really belongs no matter how much he wants to keep her with him.
Together, Lisa and Jack must solve the mysteries and face the troubles in their worlds or they will never be free to share the love that binds them across the ages. So the question to win a copy of A Ghost of a Chance at Love is: Would you take a chance to find romance and love in the old west? Or would you rather take the old west with you to contemporary times? Good luck and have fun!Terry"Giving new meaning to the term alpha male where fantasy IS reality."www.terryspear.com
