There was really nothing more Lela could do at the Altar, but she was loath to leave it. So many months of planning and scheming and fantasizing and daydreaming had to come to nothing.
Well, maybe not nothing. Something had happened. Not the glorious summoning of an otherworldly god from the vast, unknowable heavens, come to wreck havoc at her command and smote her enemies, but something did indeed occur. She only wished she knew what. There had been a rush a power, the feeling of a presence, but before she could get a grip on what that presence was, the circle had been shattered and it had fled into the night. She wasn't foolish enough to think that it was some benign sprit either who just randomly thought a jaunt in this realm of existence would be a lovely change of pace. She knew whatever it was that had been released had an agenda all its own. And as an unbound entity, it had the freedom to do whatever it wished without a mortal master to control it.
"Let's get out here," Nick said, taking her arm and helping her to her feet.
She shot Phoebe another furious look, but it was pointless. Being mad at Phoebe was a total waste of time and energy mostly because the woman simply did not care. It was like being mad at a brick wall. The satisfaction of yelling only lasted a few brief seconds in the face of such solid, unrelenting indifference. It was a shame really because Lela could have used a good scream right then.
Nick began leading her away. But Lela stopped him with a hand on his shoulder. "Wait," she said and then turned back to the Altar. She bowed her head and said a quick cleansing spell over the ancient stump. She knew this was entirely a 'close the barn door after the horse is out' situation, but she wanted – needed – to do it nonetheless. It wouldn't eradicate the undoubtedly evil thing they unleashed, but maybe it would make sure the Altar itself wasn't forever sullied by what they had done. At least she hoped so.
The air seemed to stir around her, a gentle breeze that Lela took as a good sign. Maybe all was not lost. With a deep sigh, she turned to Nick and took his hand. She would need him and his strength in these coming days. There was much to be done.
