From the Vault of Goddess Karen

Some people just can't handle their shit. We're talking about pain here, and it's something I take very seriously. There's not so much of a difference between an "ow!" and an "ah!" Intermingled, they're the best soundtrack to an S&M session. Throw in some air being sucked through teeth and it's a freaking symphony. That being said, experience (plus common sense) prevents a dom from taking the pain to another, more harmful level. This is the consensual, fun kind of pain.

Pain and pleasure are twin sisters, you see. Some people will go to great lengths to avoid the pain aspect in favor of the pleasure, not realizing they are cut of the same cloth.

It's all about those lovely endorphins. "They are produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus in vertebrates during exercise, excitement, pain, consumption of spicy food, love and orgasm, and they resemble the opiates in their abilities to produce analgesia and a feeling of well-being." Thank you, Wikipedia, for your artful definition, I love you.

Sit-ups or a spanking? My choice is clear. And as much as I love spicy food, I'd rather have a varied platter of BDSM activities laid out before me. The endorphins don't only affect the submissive in the scheme of things; the dominant person gets off on them too. The rush as your paddle meets willing skin, the tensing of your bicep as you go in with the dildo…the physical act of dominating someone is its own sweet, sweet workout. If I don't have a fine line of perspiration along my hairline for my beloved to lick off, then I'm shortchanging myself.

The Incredible Graylin Fox

I am so excited to have one my very good friends and favorite authors GRAYLIN FOX here with me today!

LisaFox: So, tell us about you. Who is Graylin Fox?

GraylinFox: I am a smartass and come by it genetically. My father is always the one in the back of the room with the sharp, funny lines. Remember the "I'm a zit" line from Animal House? Dad did that at dinner one night. Mom almost hyperventilated. He and his brother make me laugh so hard I weep. I hung out with them during family gatherings growing up; it also got me away from the melodrama, and usually put me in front of sports. Two places I love to be.

Even though I have a smart mouth, it was kept in check in school. I love school. I went for 21 years. Seriously. Love it. But I did sit in back of the class and spend time watching classmates. Truly the best seat in the house. Never had a problem with classes growing up so people watching didn't hurt my grades. One setback? In grad school, I ended up with views of classmate's thongs and tramp stamps. That'll move you up front, and quick!

I love to read. I started reading avidly before kindergarten. I remember reading books instead of taking naps when I did start school. My mother read two to three books a week for as long as I can remember. She loved words and being able to delve into a reality someone created. She fostered that in me and after I read so many Harlequins I got sick, I moved to mystery, thriller, and fantasy.

My science fiction and fantasy love came from Dad; he took me and my brother to Star Wars (the first one released) on release day. I owe him big for that. We all do. We all waited to see Avatar as a family over that Christmas. The nerd force is strong in our family.

LF: You are a not a romance author. You mostly write fantasy and sci fi and psychological horror and other fun stuff like that. What do you enjoy most about writing your fantastical tales?

GF: I don't know how others came to start writing. But I started when a poem would not leave my head. So I wrote it down and the flood gates opened. I wrote 25 poems in the first two weeks. Some are still good. And they varied in topic, romance, horror, fantasy, just about everything was backed up in my head and flowed out quickly. So, I started writing because I didn't feel I had a choice.

Now I love it. I love going into another world and being the first to know what happens next. Horror, I can write it and read some of it. But I'm UNDER the seat in the movie theatre as a fan. I love science fiction and fantasy. I know the overall arc of a story but few of the details; they just spill out when I sit down to write. Always amazes me. It's an escape that has no equal for me.

LF: Your upcoming release, YOUR BIGGEST FAN has some romance in it. Kinda. Tell us more about it.

GF: Yes, there is romance in YOUR BIGGEST FAN. It is a psychological thriller and the romance adds to the main characters story. Her name is Mary and we meet her in high school as she has developed a serious crush on the lead singer of a boy band. A really serious crush. Her friends and mother bug her until she let's go, spurred on by the comments of a date, she puts away her teen dreams and begins to grow up.

She meets a man in college who makes her forget her teen crush and their romance appears perfect. Until it isn't and tragedy strikes, we see her grasp for her sanity. Recovering alone in a cabin, she teeters on the edge and reaches to fantasy to ease her pain.

LF: If you could, would you ever change places with any of your characters? Which one?

GF: The character I'm most like in my stories is Tessa, the heroine in The Summer Fae series. I am going to spend a lot of time with these characters and I wanted a smartass, go-ahead-kick-me-again attitude to deal with the things that will happen to her. She is vulnerable and caring inside, we see it, but others see her as stronger than she feels. I love writing her and the group she hangs out with now.

To be able to see the worlds she is going to see and see the magical beings of myth and legend, I would change with her if I could.

LF: Do you believe in the existence of extraterrestrial life?

GF: Yes, I'm a science nerd and I think it's very arrogant to believe we are the only beings in the universe. But I don't think we'll see little green men fly down and abduct bubba. Life doesn't have to mean humanoid sentient life.

LF: Any new projects in the works?

GF: Right now I've got the follow up to CONTAGION on the front burner. I will complete that this summer. It will be a full length novel.

And I have to give second place to your favorite, DEADLY BEAUTY, as it is screaming for attention. That will be completed this summer as well.

I keep writing poetry, it's my first passion and fuels me. I can write a poem now in about 15 minutes and write 2 or 3 each month.

LF: How can people find you online?

GF: I am at http://www.graylinfox.com

Mary's obsession with the boy band Caelan began in high school. She and her friends went to the shows, picked their favorite band member, and plastered their walls with posters. Mary's obsession leaked into college but soon was placed in a box of memories as she matured, fell in love, and built a life with her husband.

But Happily Ever After is elusive. When she suffers a horrific loss, can she depend on her old dreams to salvage her mind? Can she wander through those memories and still keep reality within her grasp?

Moonlight and Merlot

The continuing saga of the lives, loves and heartbreaks of the residents of Dion Valley, CA.

As with all the best things in life, this is for adults only.

*****

Phoebe stared up at the night sky, blinking rapidly, trying to clear her head, to figure out what had just happened. One minute she had been standing next to Zach, the next she was on the ground with all the air knocked out of her. It wasn't a pleasant feeling by any means and she needed to find out who was to blame so she could yell at them immediately.

She heard groaning coming for either side of her so she assumed that the others were in similar predicaments. Which meant that they would be no help at all. Which also meant that she was probably going to have to get up on her own. What good was having a boyfriend if he wasn't there to pick you up when you needed it? she wondered as she slowly sat up.

Lela was sprawled out to Phoebe's right, lying in dirt as though she were about to make an angel or something. Very unladylike. But then she didn't expect much else from Lela.

Zach was to her left and he was sitting up holding his head. She figured that probably meant she wasn't going to be getting any sympathy from him anytime soon or at least not until he was over his moaning and groaning. What a waste.

Across from her, Nick sat shadowed by the night. She couldn't tell what he was doing or how he was fairing with the darkness hanging around him like it was. Somehow though, it made him all that much more sexy.

"What the hell happened?" she asked, all of them and yet none of them. She mostly just wanted to complain, but she'd take an answer if there was one to be had.

"You!" Lela said, and then clutched her stomach with an awful groan. "You bitch! When I get up I am going to kick your ass!"

"What?" Phoebe asked. This was not at all what she had been expecting. "You're going to kick my ass? Your stupid spell almost killed us all!"

Lela struggled to get herself in an upright position and Nick was by her side in flash, helping her up. It really was sickening the way he fawned over her. "You," Lela said again, pointing her finger at Phoebe. "You destroyed it all! What the fuck were you thinking?"

"I did not," Phoebe said, her head rearing back in indignation.

"You did!" Lela insisted. "You stepped out of the circle and only the gods know what you caused. Something…" She touched her temple and then shook her head. "Something went very wrong Phoebe." She looked over at Nick as though seeing him for the first time even though he had been at her side for a while and then stared at the ground. "I don't even know what," she said quietly, defeat clear in her soft voice.

Phoebe rolled her eyes. "Oh, don't be such a drama queen, Lela. You really need to get a grip."

[Until next Tuesday…]

Six Sentence Sunday

Continuing from last week, here is a bit more of my newest project. I'd give you more details, but I don't really know that much about it at this point. I'm excited to see where it goes though!

It was too bad she was such a wuss. Even though her class had long since ended, she kept coming back to the coffee shop every day and the only thing she managed to learn about him was that he worked across the street in the Iroquois Building. Every morning when she set out, she promised herself that this would be the day she would actually speak to him, but every day she chickened out. He was just so gorgeous. How could she possibly approach a man like that? What would she even say? "Hi, you're pretty hot. I think I'm totally in love with you. Want to make wild, animal love back at my place?" Jessie snorted. Yeah. Right.
