Moonlight and Merlot

The continuing saga of the lives, loves and heartbreaks of the residents of Dion Valley, CA.

As with all the best things in life, this is for adults only.

*****

Lela could feel the power descend over them as she cast the circle. The moon glowed high and bright in the darkening sky and her eyes were filled with the silver power it lent on nights such as this. She spread her arms, lifted her hands to the heavens, took a deep breath, and then began the chant she had waited all year long to say.

The wind picked up, swirling around her, whipping her hair about her face. Her words grew louder and stronger as she spoke the spell, a rush of power sweeping through her, overtaking her, guiding her words and thoughts and will.

She was connected with the Earth, the wind and the sky, with the tress and the grass and the ground and the land. She could feel each of her friends around her clearly and distinctly, feel their presences, the rhythm of every single breath that they took. She felt surreal and electric and powerful beyond anything she could ever imagine. She was like a great lightening rod, a conduit of unearthly, wonderful power.

She could feel the beat of ancient drums in her chest, hear the voices of the witches and sorcerers of the past saying the beautiful, binding magic spell along with her. Those phantom, echoing voices of the past strengthened her resolve, made her stand up straighter, gave conviction and force to her voice. She could feel the spell growing in intensity and power all around them, feel the barrier between all the worlds heed her command. Just a little more and it would open. Just a little more and she would have all that she had ever dreamed.

Everything was perfect, just as it all should be, right up until the moment when the whole world stopped.

[Until next Tuesday…]

Six Sentence Sunday

Here are the opening sentences of the Sky Pirate story I work on intermittently.

Most of the problem I have with this story is that there is a super-fine line between information dumping and world building and I just haven't found the proper shoes to walk it yet. Still, I like what I have, so hopefully it'll work out.

Was it worth it? Daric asked himself again as the airship he was trying to pilot shuddered around him and coughed out black, pungent smoke. Was it really worth it?

And though he had been very nearly captured, shot at, and now probably destined to crash and die horribly in the remote forest below, he decided that yes, it had been worth it. Totally and completely worth it.

Be sure to stop by the OFFICIAL SITE and check out all of this week's enticing sentences!

Special Guest Suzanne Rock & CONTEST!!

It is my extreme pleasure to have super hot romance author SUZANNE ROCK here with me today!

LisaFox: So, tell us about you. Who is Suzanne Rock?

SuzanneRock: Good question, lol. I'm currently a full time stay-at-home mom of two children, five and three. This happened in the past six months, lol. For fourteen years before that, I worked in the biotech industry doing scientific research on rare genetic disorders. I'm on temporary hiatus from that while I focus on raising my children and my writing. I love to read, and will devour anything I can get my hands on. I also love hiking and kayaking. I don't really do the latter much anymore since my kids are so small. Hopefully in a few years I'll be able to take it up again. ;)

LF: You are a romance author, but do you consider yourself a romantic?

SR: I guess that I'm more of a practical romantic. I can't help it, it's the scientist in me. ;) While I do believe that there is someone for everyone, and that love is indeed possible at first sight, I know first-hand that HEA (Happily Ever After) doesn't come without a lot of work. You can't sit back and expect everything to just go with the flow, that everything will come naturally. Some things will come naturally, yes, but some things you'll need to work at. I think a lot of people believe that marriage is a happy ending to their relationship, and then don't bother investing much more into their partner. Marriage is the beginning, not the end, and it takes a lot of work in order to be successful. The best marriages happen because both people are 100% committed to making the relationship work. ;)

LF: Your latest release, DARK OBSESSION, is book two in your Immortal Realms series. Can you give us an overview of that world?

SR: In the Immortal Realm series, Earth is divided into two subcultures. The first is the human world that we know today. The second is all of the immortals that live among us in secret. Each type of Immortal (vampires, werewolves, fey, witches, etc.) all have their own clan with their own hierarchy. Representatives from each of these clans, along with select humans chosen for their diplomatic ability and discretion, gather in Barcelona, Spain and form the Immortal Council, a kind of United Nations. Here, deals are struck and laws are formed that protect all of the clans. As you can imagine, there is a lot of fighting and back-door dealings, just like in the real United Nations. Sanctions are placed on some clans, and others are thrown out altogether. There's spying and intrigue. When something emerges that threatens Earth's existence, the Immortal Council is thrown into chaos. How the clans put aside their differences and defeat this threat is the basis of this series.

LF: Your hero Javier sounds mighty hot. Who do you see playing him in the movie?

SR: Goodness, I've never really thought about that. I know that a lot of writers work from pictures of actors and models when forming their stories for inspiration, but I'm not like that. I have a picture of Javier in my head, but have never really translated it into real life. Antonio Banderas would probably be a good fit. I think the character he portrayed in Interview with a Vampire, Armand, is a pretty good representation of Javier.

LF: What do for fun? I mean, besides writing?

SR: :) Like I mentioned before, I enjoy reading, hiking and kayaking. I live in a development that's a hilly three mile loop, and I try to walk it at least three times a week. I find that walking really helps me with plotting. It's probably something to do with the outside air and increase in oxygen. (I'm sorry, I got a little geeky there for a moment. :)

LF: Any new projects in the works?

SR: I have just contracted a new novella, called Honor Bound, with Red Sage. It's due to come out in November. You can read more about it here: http://suzannerock.com/?page_id=642

I've started a new quarterly newsletter. The first issue will come out in June. In each installment, I'll pick one random subscriber to win a prize. J You can sign up for my newsletter through the right sidebar on my website here: www.SuzanneRock.com

I'm also gearing up to teach an online class through RWA, called "Ebook and Digital Publishing, is it for me?" The first class will be in June. For more information and to sign up, you can go here: http://suzannerock.com/?page_id=64

And finally, I have a second series with Loose Id called the Kyron pack series. This is about a group of werewolves who own a string of casinos in Vegas and have become involved in a turf war. I've written two books in this series already and it has been pretty successful. My second book came out last summer, and I know that there are fans out there who would really like to read the third and last story in the trilogy (Josh's story). Never fear, my friends, I'm working on that story now and hope to get it to my Loose Id editor this summer. You can read more about that series here: http://suzannerock.com/?page_id=100

Long ago Javier chose to walk away from the one person who mattered in his life. Now that he is free once again to roam the Earth, he becomes obsessed with making up for past mistakes. His mission is to gain Catherine's vote for the vampires on the Immortal Council, but when he sees her he realizes he wants much more. He wants her heart. When she disappears from the Council's halls, he tracks her down, determined to make her remember the past — and the love they once shared.

Catherine can't let her passion for Javier rekindle — no matter what the cost. Much has changed since he abandoned her so long ago. With the Immortal Council fragmented and her werewolf king abducted, Catherine has little patience for Javier's empty promises. Still, he is persistent, and she sees the value in having an ancient vampire for an ally. They strike a deal: she will submit to his every carnal desire if he will help find her king. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned, and their erotic interludes ignite the passionate anger of Catherine's only fey ally. Now, all three of their lives are in jeopardy. To survive, Javier must build an intimate bond with the only woman who has ever rejected his love, and a man who'd like nothing more than to see him dead.

Phoebe rolled her eyes and went to stand in the spot Lela pointed out to her. The stupid spell hadn't even begun and she was already bored. Standing out in the middle of nowhere, in the grass and dirt no less, did not qualify as a fun evening in Phoebe's world. Things she did for friendship. Really. Lela owed her big for this.

She glanced over at Zach but there was nothing going on there. Which, of course, was no surprise at all. Zach was beautiful for sure, but not exactly exciting. The fact that their families hated one another gave him most of his appeal and Phoebe wondered just how much longer that would continue to tickle her. And what she would do when the novelty wore off.

Nick's voice floated over to her and she turned in his direction. He and Lela seemed to be discussing something very intensely, but she couldn't make out a single word they were saying. From Nick's body language, he seemed rather upset about something. Trouble in paradise? she wondered as they continued their debate. She certainly hoped so.

A sharp pain stabbed her in the temple and Phoebe winced. As she brought her hand to her head, he vision went dark, but in the blackness was… a familiarity. There was something she was supposed to do. Something she was not allowed to forget. The pain hit her again and she almost screamed out loud. She heard Zach ask if she was all right, but his voice seemed distant, like it was coming to her from down a long tunnel. There was only the pain and the darkness and the sense that she needed to…

"Phoebe," Lela's voice called, cutting though everything and just as suddenly as it had come, it all disappeared. She very nearly swooned from the sudden departure of all that discomfort and she had to make a conscious effort to keep upright.

She glared at Lela. She did not like the way the other girl was looking at her. "What?" she asked.

"I need you to focus," Lela said, giving Phoebe that frowny face of hers. "We're about to begin."

"So, begin," Phoebe said. "No one's stopping you. It's about time we get this done anyway.

Lela gave her a long look that Phoebe bore as patiently as humanly possible. Lela did wear on her last nerve sometimes. The stare went on and on and just when Phoebe was about to open her mouth, Lela looked away and up at the stars.

"All right," Lela said finally. "Let's begin." She picked up a silver knife and waved it in a circle over all their heads. "God of the Grapes, Caretaker of the Valley, Hear my call…" she chanted and Phoebe shivered as she felt power descend down all around her.
