Photos: 450 March to Stop Pipeline

About 450 people took part in a four-day march to stop a proposed fracked gas pipeline. The event ended March 20 in Northfield, Massachusetts, near Greenfield. Twenty people walked the entire 53 mile route. Fracked gas causes climate change, which the world's leading scientists say is a major threat to earth's ability to support human life. Grocery Workers Rally

On March 24 at 4 p.m. in Holyoke, there will be a two-hour rally for justice. Workers at Stop & Shop throughout New England are asking the billion dollar company for fair wages and benefits. Stop & Shop workers in the Valley are union members. They have a web site at www.ufcw1459.com.

April 22 Concert to Aid Cameroon

Derrik Jordan will perform a concert with other musicians in Putney, Vermont, near Brattleboro on April 22 at 8 p.m. Jordan is the lead singer and guitar player in Simba, probably the most popular band in the Brattleboro area. Simba plays reggae and highlife, among other kinds of music. Their concerts usually attract about 100 people, almost all of whom dance for almost the whole concert.

Group Works to Ban Plastic Bags in Keene

In Keene, a group of people are lobbying for the city to ban plastic bags. A plastic bag ban was enacted in Northampton in January. Danielle Baudrand lives in Keene and is leading the effort there. “We need more people to help,” she told the Valley Post in a phone interview March 9. “The law says the city can't ban plastic bags unless the state says it's OK.”

Amtrak Gets Faster in the Valley

Thanks to the work of transportation activists, the trip to and from Brattleboro to Springfield, Massachusetts on Amtrak recently got 27 percent faster. The train stops in Greenfield, Northampton, and Holyoke on its way to New York City. It now takes one hour and 34 minutes, down from two hours and nine minutes.

Salmon Return

About 200 years ago all the salmon in the Connecticut river in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut died because of pollution caused by humans. Before that, tens of thousands of salmon lived in the river. Now, thanks to the work of environmental activists, wild salmon are returning to the river and laying eggs.
