Vusi Mahlasela in Northampton

Vusi Mahlasela, a singer-songwriter, guitarist and activist who lives in South Africa, performed an outstanding public concert in Northampton on February 16. Mahlasela was active in the movement that overthrew the apartheid government in South Africa. In 1994, he performed at Nelson Mandela's presidential inauguration.


"Vusi has a sort of profound beauty about him. He has a light on," said two-time Grammy award winner Dave Matthews.

Springfield Bank Protests Feb. 22, 24

Activists are asking the public to attend three protests against banks that want to foreclose on Springfield homeowners. On February 22 at 10:30 a.m., a protest will be held at 1179 Saint James Avenue. There will be two actions on February 24. At 9:30 a.m., activists will gather at 12-14 Foster Street. At 12:30 p.m., they will be at 29 Verge Street.

On February 7, about 25 people protested a foreclosure auction of a Springfield home by Wells Fargo Bank.

Like a Leech, Wal-Mart Returns to Greenfield

Wal-Mart wants to build a massive new store and parking lot, destroying open space in Greenfield. The town Planning Board will hold its final public hearing about Wal-Mart's scheme on February 17, according to a board spokesperson. "Please save the date, and encourage your friends to come and speak out against this environmentally and economically valueless plan," said Greenfield resident Al Norman.


The hearing will start at 7 p.m. at the high school cafeteria.

Springfield Bank Protest Is Feb. 10

On February 7, about 25 people protested a foreclosure auction of a Springfield home. As a result of the community action, the auction was postponed by Wells Fargo Bank. A second rally will coincide with the re-scheduled auction. The rally will be on February 10 at 1:30 p.m. outside the home that Wells Fargo wants to auction: 129 Champlain Street in Springfield.
