Concert Review: Koite and Mahlasela

Habib Koite and Vusi Mahlasela and their band performed an excellent concert at the Academy of Music in Northampton April 10. Koite lives in the west African nation of Mali, where he is from. Mahlasela lives in South Africa, where he is from. The venue appeared to be almost sold out. The applause was loud and long after every song. Many people danced in the aisles.

300 Workers Form a Union

About 300 workers in Keene formed a union April 6. “Pay, benefits, and the grievance process are our key issues,” Kim Schmidl-Gagne told the Valley Post last year. She is one of the workers in the new union. They work at Keene State College. “New Hampshire is in last place among the 50 states in funding for higher education,” Schmidl-Gagne said. “We want a voice to advocate to change that.”

Workers Win

Thanks to thousands of people who marched and went to rallies, the minimum wage for all workers in California and the vast majority of workers in New York state will be $15 an hour. A march and rally in Boston on April 14 has the same goal for Massachusetts.

April 22 Concert to Aid Cameroon

Derrik Jordan will perform a concert with other musicians in Putney, Vermont, near Brattleboro on April 22 at 8 p.m. Jordan is the lead singer and guitar player in Simba, probably the most popular band in the Brattleboro area. Simba plays reggae and highlife, among other kinds of music. Their concerts usually attract about 100 people, almost all of whom dance for almost the whole concert.

Springfield Rally at Congressman's Office March 30

In Springfield on March 30 at 3 p.m., there will be a rally at the office of congressman Richard Neal. The rally organizers want Neal to commit to voting against the Trans-Pacific Partnership. If passed, the Partnership would reduce workers' wages in the Valley; would make dictators richer in Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei; would hurt farmers in the Valley by increasing the amount of food imported into the USA from Mexico; and would speed up climate change.
