Reggae Singer from Jamaica to Play in Valley
When N.L. Dennis was singing in a recording studio with Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley stopped by to listen. Marley praised Dennis's delivery. Today, Dennis lives in his native Jamaica and joins hundreds of Jamaicans who come to Vermont every summer in search of better paying work. Most of them work on vegetable farms and at apple orchards. Concert Review: Sierra Leone All-Stars
The Sierra Leone All-Stars performed an excellent concert near Greenfield on June 25. It was at the Shea Theater in Turner's Falls, Massachusetts. The dance floor was full. The band has recorded several excellent albums. Most of the songs on the albums are Afro-Pop or “high life” style. Some are reggae.
Lead singer Ruben Koroma asked, "Our country, Sierra Leone, is rich in minerals. Why are our people in poverty?"

Sierra Leone All-Stars Concert Set For June 25
The Sierra Leone All-Stars will perform a public concert near Greenfield on June 25 at 7:30 p.m. It will be at the Shea Theater in Turner's Falls, Massachusetts. In Northampton, the Iron Horse Music Hall has dozens of concerts every year. It regularly hosts world famous musicians like Michael Franti and Dar Williams. In 2014, one of the best concerts in years at the Iron Horse was performed by the Sierra Leone All-Stars. The dance floor was full.

3,300 Nurses To Go On Strike
About 3,300 nurses will go on strike June 27 in Boston. They are asking the public to join them at a rally on June 26 at 4 p.m., and on the picket lines starting June 27 at 7 a.m. Buses from Springfield to Boston leave every two hours and take about an hour and 40 minutes. One-way fares start at $16. Details are at www.greyhound.com. From the Boston bus station to the rally takes about 12 minutes by subway; to the picket line is about 30 minutes by subway. The fare is $2.10.

Construction Projects To Aid Planet
In Keene, workers are erecting a bridge over a busy highway. The bridge will be for the exclusive use of people walking or riding a bicycle. Near Brattleboro, electricity will soon be generated by a long-standing dam on the West River. A similar project is bring proposed in Keene.

Environmental Victory
Activists saved 65 acres of land in Amherst and 45 acres in Belchertown, Massachusetts. Belchertown borders Amherst. Protecting land from development is one of the best ways to stop climate change, which the world's leading scientists say is a major threat to earth's ability to support human life. Most of the money for protecting land comes from the government; politicians decide how much to invest in saving land, versus tax breaks for billionaires, war, and prison for non-violent people.

Workers Win
Workers in the Valley walked off the job April 13 as they joined the biggest strike in the USA in five years. They work for Verizon. Community supporters joined them on picket lines in Springfield and in Hadley, Massachusetts, near Amherst. On June 1, the strike ended with a major victory for the 39,000 or so striking workers. Their wages will increase by 11 percent.

Concert Review: Indigo Girls
The Indigo Girls performed an excellent concert in Northampton on May 27. The Academy of Music was sold out. The audience sang along to many of the songs, sometimes so loudly that the band's Amy Ray and Emily Saliers stopped singing and listened, smiling.
Highlights were the songs “Texas Was Clean,” “Jonas and Ezekiel,” and “Sugar Tongue.” Ray and Saliers, who both play guitar, were accompanied by an outstanding violin player, but not by any other musicians. The Valley Post interviewed Ray a...
