Dirty Dozen Brass Band Concert is September 10

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will play at Gateway City Arts in Holyoke on Saturday, September 10 at 7 p.m. The venue has a dance floor. You can hear the band's music at:

In the next few months, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band will perform in New York City, Chicago, and Hawaii.

Activists Rally at Exxon Gas Station

Activists held a rally outside an Exxon Mobil gas station on August 4 in Keene. They were protesting the company's efforts to persuade the public that climate change isn't a problem. The world's leading scientists say climate change is a major threat to earth's ability to support human life. It is caused mainly by people driving cars and trucks, and by using fossil fuels to generate electricity and to heat buildings.

Amtrak Getting Better in the Valley

Activists are working to make Amtrak service between Springfield and Boston faster, more frequent, and cheaper. Thanks to their work, Amtrak is set to go much faster between the Valley and New York City starting in January 2018.

In addition to Springfield, Amtrak stops in Brattleboro, Greenfield, Northampton, and Holyoke. Activists are also working to increase the frequency of Amtrak service within the Valley. They have a web site at www.TrainsInTheValley.org.

Valley Residents Among Thousands at Philly March

At least five people from the Valley were among the thousands who marched against climate change in Philadelphia July 24. “The march was huge,” Paki Wieland of Northampton told the Valley Post on July 26. She traveled to the march with four other Valley residents. “I am here with CODEPINK,” Wieland said. CODEPINK is a women-led group that works to end U.S. wars and militarism, support peace and human rights initiatives, and redirect Americans' tax dollars into healthcare, education, green job...

Rallies July 21

The environmental group 350.org is promoting rallies on July 21 in Keene and near Springfield, in Hartford, Connecticut. The Keene rally starts at 6 p.m.; the Hartford rally is at noon. Hartford is about 30 minutes from Springfield by car; Amtrak and Greyhound provide non-stop service.

“If elected, Trump would be the only national leader in the world to outright dismiss the science of climate change,” said event organizer May Boeve.

Reggae Singer from Jamaica to Play in Brattleboro

When N.L. Dennis was singing in a recording studio with Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley stopped by to listen. Marley praised Dennis's delivery. Today, Dennis lives in his native Jamaica and joins hundreds of Jamaicans who come to Vermont every summer in search of better paying work. Most of them work on vegetable farms and at apple orchards. Dennis works as a reggae musician. He will perform a public concert with his band in Brattleboro on August 6.

Women Running for Top Jobs

In the Valley, activists are working to elect women to positions of power. On August 9, the Vermont primary election will decide if a woman, Sue Minter, will be on the November ballot for governor. She now leads in the polls. Massachusetts has never elected a female governor. Since George Washington took office in 1789, the USA has never had a woman president.

Money is power. The 10 richest people in the world are all white men. Women earn 79 percent as much as men in the USA.
