March 27, 2023: Munchkin Curses (Fourth Printing!) Now At The Factory

We've published several Munchkin mini-expansions over the years. Ranging in size from 15- to 30-card decks, these tiny supplements to the core Munchkin games bring all sorts of weirdness and fun to the table. From Knights to Princesses to Dragons to Squids , we've covered a wide variety of subjects . . . and several of them have performed well enough to receive multiple printings!

One such set that's back at the factory for more is Munchkin Curses . First released in April of 2017, the expansion has proven popular enough that we've sold through three printings. We hope that we've ordered enough in this latest (fourth) to last a couple of years, but it's impossible to judge demand for many game titles these days. Will we sell 500 or 5,000 units through distribution? It's a roll of the dice! If we get lucky, we're on the 5,000 end of the scale. If we roll poorly . . . well, don't roll poorly.

If all goes well, this latest printing of Munchkin Curses will reach stores this summer. Of course, a lot of it depends on how we roll the dice. Wish us luck!

March 26, 2023: Now Available, The Elder Futhark Die

After the success of The Zodiac Die , we decided to expand our library of dice + books with The Elder Futhark Die , a massive 24-sided die you can use with almost any roleplaying game . . . so long as you're imaginative and not afraid to roll the die and make up a story as the randomness of life hits your table.

March 25, 2023: A Tabletop RPG Art Asset Jam

Are you an aspiring game creator and publisher? Then you will want to take a look at this art jam at itch.io where several artists are sharing stock art – single images and packs of images – many of which may be perfect for your next roleplaying game or zine.

With over 60 submissions as I write this, there's a lot to choose from! And, buying a pack or two from the jam's entries helps support indie creators!

March 24, 2023: Munchkin South Park Available Now

Oh my god, they killed . . . a monster! Go on down to Munchkin South Park , the newest collaboration from The Op and Steve Jackson Games, hitting game game stores and Warehouse 23 now. Join the students of South Park Elementary as a New Kid and Kick Down some Doors to fight iconic South Park characters like Chef and The Devil. But you've got Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny on your side. Unless someone kills Kenny, but who would do that? 

We're proud of our 22 years of Munchkin , and combining that with over 25 years of South Park, you've got a lot of comedy in one box. Two great tastes that taste great together (as one might say). Munchkin fans may not know, but the late great Munchkin Czar Andrew Hackard was an enormous South Park fan, and was a champion of this set for a long time. While he couldn't see it come to fruition, knowing his input on the project and how much passion he had for both properties makes this one a special release for us.

March 23, 2023: Pocket Box Reprints: Car Wars And Ogre

In addition to the three new Pocket Box games (mentioned here), we're also working on reprints of two classic Pocket Box titles. Both Car Wars and Ogre , reprinted in 2020 thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, have been important titles to our catalog for over four decades and we're happy to report that these are coming back late this year. As a sign of how inflation is impacting costs, both games will increase in price to $24.95 as we pull some of the fluffier components (such as journals and stickers) from the reprinted editions.

We don't expect to ship these reprints until very late in the year, so please watch the Daily Illuminator for news. You can also subscribe to our newsletter to receive news of these and other Steve Jackson Games releases. We're planning to offer both of these reprints to distribution, so stores worldwide will have a chance at stocking these. If all goes well, both games will be in stores for Christmas.

(In related news. the second Pocket Box Kickstarter is still on our wish list, but other projects have to come first. Again, we recommend subscribing to our newsletter if you want to receive an email when we're ready to announce a launch date for this project.)

March 22, 2023: Grind Some Gears With Munchkin Steampunk

Can you believe it's been seven years since Munchkin Steampunk launched onto the scene? Think of how many sprockets have been ratcheted and springs that've sprung over that time! I got a bit nostalgic and looked back at one of our earlier #SJGamesLive streams with Rhea at the local Dragon's Lair in Austin. (That's where the Munchkin Steampunk Launch Party was held.) Video technology was definitely a bit more archaic compared to our new studio setup, but it was awesome to see so many people having a blast with the game.

Since then, we've been graced with a number of superb additions, all with that iconic Phil Foglio art. The expansion took us to the world of Phil's comic Girl Genius , a legendary steampunk story that fits right in with the world of Munchkin . And then we expanded with fun accessories like Kill-O-Meters  and even some promo cards and bookmarks. I think the Munchkin Steampunk Kill-O-Meter has been my single most-used accessory over the years in the office. I even used it on stream a few weeks ago while we played Wiz-War ! Phil also did the art for that one, so it worked great in a pinch. 

This isn't a eulogy, though.  Munchkin Steampunk , along with the expansion and accessories, is still available on Warehouse 23. Gather your friends, family, and favorite bucket of bolts for a great game!

March 21, 2023: Choose Cthulhu Gamebooks Coming To Kickstarter

It has been a few months since we last mentioned the Choose Cthulhu series (see this Daily Illuminator post), but we can now report that the first six books in the series are almost ready for Kickstarter. We've run print tests, constructed the campaign page, and we think we have everything lined up and ready to go. 

If you're a fan of old-school solo adventure books, then Choose Cthulhu is going to make a fantastic addition to your library. Each book is a stand-alone game, and you can play any or all of them in any order you wish.

March 20, 2023: Munchkin Kittens Now Shipping!

The fifth printing of Munchkin Kittens has landed and is now officially shipping to distributors. One of the more popular of our many Munchkin mini-expansions, Munchkin Kittens was first published in November of 2015 and continues to be one of our evergreen Munchkin supplements. 

What's an "evergreen" title? These are the games, expansions, and accessories that sell steadily year after year, forming the backbone of our operations. Game publishing can feel like a treadmill at times, especially in today's periodicals-like market, so having a library of consistent sellers is a huge benefit and greatly helps with stability. We're fortunate enough to have dozens of evergreens, of which Munchkin Kittens is merely one example. 

With Munchkin Kittens again shipping to stores, now's also an excellent time to direct you to the Munchkin Kittens dice bag. March 19, 2023: Monster Seeds For Use With The Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game

When we were working on the Monsters 2 book (available in print and PDF, and also as a print-on-demand book), our team crafted a number of adventure seeds for use with monsters found in the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game . We used those adventure seeds on Facebook, in Kickstarter updates, forum posts, and even a Daily Illuminator post. 

The adventure seeds did their job at the time – directing attention to the Monsters 2 Kickstarter campaign while providing gamemasters with ideas – and to be honest, they're as useful today as they were when originally written. Fortunately, we thought to create a forum thread collecting links to the adventure seeds in a single place . . . and the thread is still there and ready for those of you who happened to miss these when they were first posted in 2019.

March 18, 2023: Using The Zodiac Die In Roleplaying Games

When we released The Zodiac Die , our goal was to put a fun die design into the world and give gamers a tool they could use in their favorite roleplaying games. The book packed with the die includes Steve's thoughts on using the die to generate personalities for your RPG characters, but there was only so much space. So Steve wrote designer's notes and included some ideas not in the booklet. The article first appeared in Hexagram #7, but we've since gone on to post it at Medium where everyone can read it and get a better understanding of Steve's motivation for the creation of The Zodiac Die .
