May 2, 2023: Artist's Signature Removed From D&D Movie Poster

As Egg Embry reports here on Geeknative.com, the signature of artist Jeff Easley was digitally removed from his artwork for the D&D movie.

The headline "credits" the removal to Hasbro, but an update points out that the removal could also have been done by Paramount or a Paramount marketing partner, so read the whole article on Geeknative (there are photos) and keep in mind that "credit" is not settled. So don't flame Hasbro, which may be a victim here as well.

Whoever did it, it's reprehensible. Jeff is reported to be taking it with professional good humor. Suggestion - if he's at Gen Con, look for him and ask him to sign your poster!

May 1, 2023: Groo: The Game On Kickstarter This Month!

As we mentioned last month, we're bringing back a classic that has been unavailable for far too long.

Groo: The Game , based on the genius work of Sergio Aragonés, combines the original core game and expansion into a single box. Steve took time to work through the game and make tweaks, developing and improving the game. After all, we've had over twenty years since the game went out-of-print to find better ways to make the game flow and play better than ever.

I'm personally excited to see this one, mostly for two reasons.I remember buying the game at GenCon and even getting the good fortune of Sergio Aragonés signing my copy. And . . .My own copy of the game and expansion have vanished. It will be great to finally score a replacement for those missing boxes.Follow the Steve Jackson Games account on Kickstarter to receive email notification when we launch the Groo: The Game project later this month!

April 29, 2023: David Pulver On "Why I Play GURPS" . . . In 1990

The December 1990 issue of Where We're Going, the old Steve Jackson Games retailer newsletter, has a tiny tidbit of text that's a blast to read so many years after it was first published. When I ran across this recently, I thought it would be fun to share with all of you. You no doubt recognize David Pulver's name, but did you know he was once merely a fan saying incredibly wonderful things about GURPS ? Enjoy!

First, the basic system is at its core, logical and simple ....

Second, I enjoy the tactical feel of the basic combat system ....

Third, the supplementary material has been of a very high standard, and in general, has been fun to read. I get the feeling that the writers understand and appreciate the individual genres or periods they are dealing with.

Fourth, the systems (perhaps because of their basic simplicity and realism) lend themselves to expansion. An example is the recent Animal Character rules in Roleplayer.

April 27, 2023: Ending On Kickstarter Today: Dungeon Fantasy Monster Seeds

Our tiny, tiny "Quickstarter" project is coming down to the final hours, and now's your last chance to join in the campaign before it ends!

If you're unsure of what this current Kickstarter campaign offers, then we recommend clicking here to see the project page and place your pledge before the timer runs out. For a very, very good look at the content of this new booklet, you can find all of the game content free online! Please see this post in our forums for links to the different monster seeds that were originally created to promote the Monsters 2 book.

The creative work is done and we've already run a print test. Once the project ends, then we'll pull the trigger on the full print run and move into the survey and fulfillment stage as fast as possible. If all goes well, we'll be able to deliver the rewards as estimated in the campaign's description.

If you happen to spot this after the Kickstarter campaign has closed, then please remember that we offer the entire Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game on our online store, Warehouse 23. While most of our Daily Illuminator readership may not own a game store, we know that some of you are selling games, and you may be attending the GAMA Expo this week in Reno. Well, so are we!
