April 24, 2023: Retailers, Visit Us At GAMA Expo!

While most of our Daily Illuminator readership may not own a game store, we know that some of you are selling games, and you may be attending the GAMA Expo this week in Reno. Well, so are we! The SJ Games team will be in full force at booth #723, showing our new and upcoming releases and helping store representatives sign up for our direct sales accounts. We'll also be presenting these games in various panels and demos, and of course, you can check out some of our most anticipated releases at the Game Nights. Come by the booth and say "Hi"! Amy would love to chat with you about our store incentives and answer any questions you may have. And remember to check your coupon book and take advantage of our free giveaway!

April 22, 2023: Dungeon Fantasy Monster Seeds Coming To Kickstarter

The monster seeds we mentioned recently in the Daily Illuminator (posted here) are being collected into a small booklet and we're almost ready to offer this work as our next Kickstarter campaign. This small booklet is being prepared as both a PDF and printed item, with the Kickstarter prices for the two kept as low as we can manage.

In addition to this new booklet, the Kickstarter project will also offer other Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game books and accessories, and we'll even make some of the GURPS ttles and some of our dice and dice bags available as add-ons during the survey stage. 

The content of Dungeon Fantasy Monster Seeds can be found online. This collection is for those of you who prefer to have a PDF and/or print book and would rather not have to visit multiple websites to read the work and incorporate it into your game sessions.

Please follow the Dungeon Fantasy Monster Seeds Kickstarter page today! When the project launches, all followers will receive an email notification from Kickstarter. And you'll want to pay close attention, because this is planned as a very, very short project that will go live this Monday (April 24) and close on Thursday (April 27).

April 23, 2023: Remembering Eric Dow

Eric Dow, a valued member of our staff for many years, died yesterday of cancer. He was 54.

Eric will be missed tremendously. His good cheer and willingness to go the extra thousand miles (not an exaggeration) made him a good friend to the whole staff. His "official hats" were Facilities and Events, but he also took the lead when things had to be fabricated in the shop or with the laser cutter or 3-D printer. A great advocate of green power, Eric was the driving force behind our installation of solar charging units at the office.

Many Austin gamers know Eric and his family as the proprietors of Wonko's, a comic and game store they ran for many years.

He was also a skilled driver, rallier, motorsports fan, and mechanic, and nobody who saw it will ever forget his doing fast doughnuts in my brand-new Tesla in the Wonko's parking lot.

We cannot replace Eric. We can only remember him with love, and try to get along.

April 22, 2023: Celebrate Shakespeare's Birthday With Munchkin Savings

Though the exact date has never been confirmed, William Shakespeare's birthday has traditionally been observed on April 23. So we decided it was a good a time to celebrate with some deals and promos for Munchkin Shakespeare ! This weekend, April 22-24, save 23% on  Munchkin Shakespeare games and accessories on Warehouse 23, our online store. Pretty pawns, the Munchkin Shakespeare Kill-O-Meter , and even the detailed Globe Theatre Playmat will all be in the show! Plus, all orders will include the brand-new Official Munchkin Shakespeare Bookmark of Being True to Swine Own Self! 

Munchkin Shakespeare  has one of the more interesting origin stories in our catalog. This was our first crowdfunded Munchkin game years back, and it also had design contributions from fans on the JoCo cruise. Andrew and Steve hosted a panel and took lots of suggestions from the audience, and many of them were used in the game. Ultimately, it was Andrew's passion project, so we're happy that this fan-assisted and fan-funded game has also become a fan favorite!

April 21, 2023: A Very Munchkin Birthday

Our friends, the Griegos, shared pictures from their combined birthday party for mom, Jessica, and kid, Robin. As you can see, they chose to have a Munchkin -themed party! Fun themed party favors, snacks, and of course Munchkin, were all enjoyed, as well as hilarious custom shirts. Jessica and her husband Daniel have even cosplayed as  Munchkin  characters! You may recall the Griego name as Jessica's father, Al, spent some time on staff with us at Steve Jackson Games and is a long-time MIB. He also helped coordinate with us to get the sweet party decor. 

Thanks to the Griegos for sharing such cool party pictures, and remember: Go Up A Level!

April 20, 2023: We Love Cats Dice Bag Sample

As we've previously mentioned (Daily Illuminator post), Steve's We Love Cats dice game is now at the factory and set for release in stores later this year. We've reviewed and approved the dice, and now the custom dice bag has landed and is also good to go! That leaves the box, rules, and tokens to approve; so far, the game looks to be on schedule. If we get lucky, we might even have advance copies at GenCon!

We'll have more news on the game as the factory finalizes the components and moves We Love Cats into final assembly.

April 19, 2023: Bullet Dice Moves To A Fourth Printing

With three printings since 2019, the  Bullet Dice  set continues to surprise us as demand remains relatively stable. These double-injection molded barrel dice are shaped like bullets and continue to sell through slightly faster than we expect. Each die in the pack is identical, designed to generate results between one and six. The barrel dice include a hexagonal base that acts as a brake of sorts when rolled, reducing the amount of time the dice roll across the table (a problem sometimes encountered with barrel dice that do not include a braking feature.) 

The third printing shipped to stores just last year, and now we have placed an order with the factory for the next printing. While we thought these designs stood apart from many other dice sets, none of us expected to need multiple reprints!

We expect to be able to ship these in June. You can check at your local game store for Bullet Dice (visit our store finder to locate the game store closest to you), but if they're sold out, check back in June!. If you do not have a local game store, you'll be able to find them in our online store later this summer!

April 18, 2023: Groo: The Game Coming To Kickstarter!

First published in 1996, this fast-playing card game featuring the art and characters of Sergio Aragonés has been tough to find for – not mere years – but a few decades. Now, with your support, we'll launch an updated edition that includes both the basic game and the original expansion . . . all in one box!  Steve loves this game and never gave up during the lengthy process of securing the rights . . . and we all enjoyed the playtests. Groo: The Game is as you remember it; most of our work was just aimed at making the cards easier to read and then clarifying the rules.

What is Groo ? Let's take a peek at the game's back cover copy:

Try to build a town without having it stomped to rubble by Groo in this quick, silly game illustrated by the great Sergio Aragonés!

Groo the Wanderer is the classic fantasy hero . . . brave, daring, and completely brainless. When Groo comes to town, armies melt away and buildings fall. He doesn't MEAN it . . . it just happens.

You'll roll dice for resources and use them for buildings (which create victory points) and armies (which knock down other players' buildings and defend your own). Groo moves randomly, always with the best of intentions, destroying all that he encounters. Up to six can play . . . and the more, the merrier!

April 16, 2023: One Roll Quest Gets A Second Edition

One Roll Quest was a surprising hit in a tiny box, so much so that it is returning in a slightly larger box for a second edition! The revised One Roll Quest still comes with the quirky all-in-one die featuring multiple mini-dice inside (one for each party member!). The base game is simple – roll the die and reference the chart to see how your party fared! Did the wizard get a bunch of gold? Or maybe he bit the dust. One Roll Quest tells you in seconds – and lets you make a fun little story to go with it. This is a definitive little opener for game nights while you wait for everyone to arrive, or between turns in a round of an RPG like GURPS . 

The new edition adds the successfully Kickstarted One Roll Chronicles . This booklet adds storytelling prompts to One Roll Quest to send your adventurers on longer journeys with a bit more meat to them.
