February 15, 2023: Where Am I Going? (And What Am I Doing In This Handbasket?)

Lots of travel coming up for me . . .

February 24-26 I will be at PensaCon, in Pensacola, Florida. There will be a lot of Car Wars and a certain amount of Wiz-War , Melee , and the unannounced-but-we-are-finally-doing-it Tabloids *. Other games are always possible if one asks nicely. www.pensacon.com.

March 10-12 I will be at Nerdi Gras in Atlanta, Georgia. The game menu will be similar, with the likely addition of some after-hours Caligula , because it IS Nerdi Gras! I am also advised that there will be much music and cosplay, and more than a little dancing. www.nerdigras.org.

June 23-25 I will be at LibertyCon in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I'll be playing and teaching the above games, and no doubt some more, while being sure not to miss the charity auction (buy yourself a personal Munchkin card), the David Weber reading, or the pro game of Terraforming Mars . www.libertycon.org.

And July 28-31 I will be at GameFest, held in conjunction with AnimeFest in Dallas, Texas. Other than Car Wars , I can't say yet what we will be playing. So come find out! www.animefest.org.

February 12, 2023: Fan-Created Munchkin Box And Board

Sometimes we just like to highlight something cool that a fan on the internet created, and today that would be Jamie Lettiere's  Munchkin box and wooden playmat. The boxes feature lots of space and the boards have slots for each of the different types of items, just like our neoprene playmats. These are really neat pieces that will make for some awesome games! Thanks to Jamie for letting us share their creations, and to the folks at The Boardgame Group on Facebook who shared it with us. Very cool!

February 10, 2023: Hack & Slash 2 Now In Stores

Our family-friendly game of dungeon adventures, Hack & Slash , has performed well enough that we've published the game's first expansion. Designed by Will Schoonover, the new Whack & Stash tuckbox expansion adds 11 new quest cards to the game and introduces a new card type: Treasures! The new quests offer up the usual rewards – points and meeples – and a chance to snatch a Treasure that may grant you a power during the game (or may be saved to count as points at the end of the game). 

You can find the Hack & Slash game – as well as the new expansion! – at your favorite local game store today. If your store doesn't have Hack & Slash on their shelves, you may either ask them to special order it or, if you wish, order it direct from our online store, Warehouse 23.

February 9, 2023: Calo's Book Of Monsters

In my spare time, I love to create things. Over the last few years, thanks to the pandemic, I've had more time since I'm stuck in traffic far less than ever before and sleeping less than the pre-pandemic days. I've produced dozens of personal works, from music to books, and now one of those creations has found its way to the Steve Jackson Games catalog.

Calo's Book of Monsters is a 64-page book for use with the Mörk Borg roleplaying game. Created under their generous third-party license, this book details new monsters for the game and includes a d66 table of rumors and a tiny hexcrawl. The book has been quite successful as an indie work, selling 1,000 copies in hardcover and a few thousand copies in PDF. That, plus the continued success of Mörk Borg , made it a great choice to experiment with taking one of these independent works into distribution under the Steve Jackson Games brand.

Calo's Book of Monsters is now on the boat and expected to land at the warehouse this month. Please keep an eye on your local store so that you can get a close look at the book once it has shipped to our distribution partners. I'm particularly proud of this book and look forward to seeing how the world responds to the wider release of this small, indie RPG creation.

February 8, 2023: Tabloids Is Coming

I often get the question "Once you have an idea for a game, how long does it take to finish?" And the answer is that . . . it depends. Cthulhu Dice was mostly finished over the course of a long afternoon stuck at the Missoula airport. Munchkin worked (mostly) on its first draft, and was fully playable in less than a month.

Tabloids took more than 20 years.

No, I didn't spend that whole time designing it. I wrote it up and made cards; the initial playtests went well – and then it just wasn't the time for a game like that. I got it out every few years, looked at it, stripped out unnecessary mechanics, added more headline words, and still didn't publish it.

But now, finally, here it comes! This is a game in which you use word cards to piece together an attention-grabbing headline for a supermarket rag. That basic idea has been done before, though I didn't know that back when I started. But Tabloids has a couple of gimmicks that make it more fun, and a judging system that owes a lot to Apples to Apples and its ilk.

We brought it out at FnordCon and people liked it. So we scheduled a few office playtests and everyone had fun. So its time has come round at last! The current plan is to Kickstart it in March or April for a late 2023 release, at $19.95 (there are over 300 cards, with more planned as stretch goals).

February 7, 2023: Hard-To-Find Munchkin Playmat Available Now

Our line of Munchkin playmats are notable for not only being popular accessories, but for helping to start our usage of neoprene playmats in other lines. You can find the influence in The Fantasy Trip and Car Wars with their larger play surfaces. But Munchkin playmats have been unavailable for quite some time . . . until now. We've found a stash of The Flower of Love playmats (with utterly charming art by Katie Cook) just in time for Valentine's Day! February 6, 2023: Aquarium And "Ocean" Dice At Warehouse 23

The Nanogames: Aquarium and Eat Thy Neighbor pocket games have been released at Warehouse 23 in print and PDF. These two games are detailed in a credit card-sized package that, when opened, expands to an 11.82" wide by 9.21" tall double-sided poster.
