November 7, 2022: Another Well-Deserved Plug For The Tremendous Tome

Tremendous Tome The Tremendous Tome project not only made its goal, but hit its first extra-pages stretch goal! If you haven't picked up this book yet, go support it! The $30,000 goal is certainly within reach, and who knows what more could happen?

Here's the Hexscape picture I sent them. We opted for a close shot to show the hexagonal tiles, which are, after all, the whole distinguishing point of the set. And that lets me give credit where credit is due. Crabman and wolves, from the upcoming Fantasy Foes 2 STL set, sculpted by Spyros and painted by Irene Zielinski. Flame constructed by Tom Tullis. Hex columns and tiles conceived by Yr. Humble Servant, and engineered by Jean McGuire with input from many others. The invisible interlocking system, which you cannot see (duh), was designed by Jean as well, and a stroke of genius from Eric Dow really put the cherry on top. You will like it . . .

November 5, 2022: Metric Counting

Our European friends can skip this article, of course. But Americans are not taught the metric system in any proper way, and misunderstandings happen. One of the least understood aspects of metricism, to Americans, is simple counting, or "enumeration." The metric system speeds the process of counting to any given number by approximately two simple rules.

Classic Metric Counting

The classic metric system of counting was introduced by the Emperor Napoleon. Due to an artillery accident, he had only three fingers on one hand, and therefore kept that hand inside his coat. A military genius, Napoleon quickly realized that he could now count to ten 20% faster than his contemporaries. This became a key factor in both the speed with which his battalions moved and the efficiency with which supplies reached them.

History aside, metric enumeration works by simply omitting the numbers 3 and 5, and anything divisible by 3 or 5, from any count. Thus, if you have a handful of nuts, you would count "1, 2, 4, 6, 7 . . ." The speed and advantages of this system are obvious.

The quantities 3 and 5 still play their regular part in mathematics. It is only in enumeration that they are omitted.

Reformed Metric Counting

In the great metric reformation of 1911, this system was made more precise by bringing any product of both 3 and 5 into enumeration. Thus, 15, and any of its products, are now counting numbers.

Proposed Revision

In 2035*, a further revision will come into play. On Wednesdays only, 15 and its multiples will not be used for enumeration. On other days, they will remain enumerative values. This further adjustment allows metric counting to approach the maximum precision available without quantum computers.

* Or "one kilofreeb sevenB," but the metric calendar is for another day.

November 4, 2022: Nightmare Fuel: Three Themed Dungeon Fantasy RPG Bestiaries Crowdfunding At BackerKit

Nightmare Fuel, the latest crowdfunding effort for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG , is coming to a close at 5 p.m. Central Time on November 6, 2022. If you are going to pledge to the campaign, it's time! What's On OfferThe project features three new themed Dungeon Fantasy RPG  bestiaries from three different authors.   Serpents of Legend features snake-themed creatures of all sorts, from the inscrutable coatl to the family of corrupted shadow-worms (myrkra ormur). Also included is a template for snake-folk (snákamaðr) as a playable ancestry module, as well as advice on snake cults and the nightmare corruption of the World Worm threatening to undo all creation. Meet Dulsa Thoom, the snake-cult leader who is absolutely not based in any way on a character from the first and best movie featuring a well-muscled barbarian with a thick Cimmerian accent. Also contains several creatures of myth and legend, including hydra variants and totally-not-Medusa creatures. The Bugstiary is chock full of ants, beetles, bees, crabs, and of course, giant murder hornets. Because if Asian giant hornets are scary, a giant hornet the size of a full-grown person is just right for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG . Beetle-folk have playable ancestral modules, while one of the creatures – the giant hermit crab – makes "mobile home" a bit too literal. There's also an assortment of spiders and arthropods, such as scorpions of unusual size, and creatures that are absolutely not chuul or Mi-Go.  Garden of Evil gives you a bloody green thumb, with fighting and awakened trees, giant Venus flytraps (that sing!), vroom-hoom treeherders, and the terrible devil blossom, shown on the book's cover. Since some of the creatures have the mobility of, well, plants, they are shown as traps or environmental features rather than as creatures with agency.Status, Stretch Goal, and ExtrasThe project met its substantial funding goal of $24,000 (custom art is expensive) and is now looking at whether or not it will hit the only stretch goal: compiling all three books into a single hardcover omnibus edition to be included as an extra volume with any pledge that includes the three softcovers. And in case it wasn't clear: You'll get those, too.

Nightmare Fuel

The stretch goal is at $48,000, so it's going to require about 550 backers to unlock it. Fortunately . . . the last bestiary (the Nordlond Ovinabokin , a 192-page hardcover monster manual with most of the usual suspects in it) had 685 backers. We don't need a record turnout to unlock the book, but we do need a few hundred more people! Also available are two extras which were quite popular last time:A module for Foundry VTT much like the existing one for the Nordlond Bestiary that allows dragging and dropping the creatures – with full stat sheets! – into your virtual environment. A set of Quick-Reference cards you can place before you (physically or digitally) with the monster stats on one side and a scale reference of the creature on the other.Sample Art and Monster FormatThe artwork for the books is all in commission, and some of it has come in.

CoversWhile placeholder covers are there to show something (and they've been popular/amusing enough that some want PDFs or hard copies with the cartoony covers in addition to the painted ones!), the real covers are being drawn, with Garden of Evil being farthest along:

Layout format will be similar to the Nordlond Bestiary , with the giant scorpion here as an example:

As always, each creature has an individual custom illustration, from beetle-folk (riding giant sunspiders!) to awakened shrubberies (Ni! Ni!) to the death-priest demon.

Please Pledge, Please Share! With a few days left to go, the stretch goal is both within our reach (there are more than enough following the campaign who might pledge to get there with room to spare) – and yet still a hard lift. Pledging early in the week helps give the campaign momentum. You can also help by expressing enthusiasm for the campaign on forums and social media. Say:This ENWorld postThese posts on Reddit, on r/gurps and r/rpgThis post on RPG.netSharing on Twitter, Facebook and the like? Excellent. So come join in! There are several dedicated pledge levels to help you catch up on things:All the New Things for those who are current through the Nordlond Bestiary Nightmare Fuel books plus the Bestiary hardback for those that aren'tNew to the Dungeon Fantasy RPG ? There's a starter set for you that includes the Boxed Set!Finally, check out the add-ons, which include the three Dungeon Fantasy RPG Companions, the new Shields Up! book, and moreFinally, Gaming Ballistic is running a 10% off sale on Dungeon Fantasy RPG material with a coupon code that can be found on the campaign website under "Can't Find an Add-on?

November 3, 2022: Kickstarter Reports, November 2022 Update

Kickstarter continues to be an invaluable tool in today's world. The ability to better manage inventory, by determining demand before printing, is greatly helping us seek a steady footing in the market. We're preparing to take Wiz-War to Kickstarter. Part of that preparation includes working with the factory to create a new tooling copy of the game. There were minor edits we wanted to make before project launch so that, if the Wiz-War Kickstarter campaign succeeds, we can move immediately into manufacturing.

Please follow us on Kickstarter – Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23 – to receive notice when we launch new campaigns.

Munchkin Witches, 30 Cards for Steve Jackson's MunchkinOctober 31 to November 10549 backers and currently fundingA new Munchkin mini-expansion! Because of the cost of postage these days, we're also offering other Munchkin mini-expansions, games, and accessories in this project to minimize the pain of shipping price vs reward price. All stretch goals are already unlocked! Please join the Kickstarter campaign today!Roll the Deck, For Use With Steve Jackson's Pick a Card DiceSeptember 21 to October 3950 backers and on scheduleThis small collection of new games for use with the Pick a Card Dice set has already reached Warehouse 23 and we hope to start the fulfillment late this month.Hexagram #10, an Old-School RPG Zine for The Fantasy TripAugust 31 to September 12694 backers and on scheduleOne title needed some tweaks, but everything is once again at print and on schedule. Fulfillment will happen in early 2023.That puts us at three open campaigns. One currently funding, one at print, and the third almost ready to shift into the fulfillment stage. One benefit of running crowdfunding campaigns alongside producing direct-to-distribution titles is that we never lack for work. One drawback is that we never lack for work. Many on our team are spending long hours creating games, and we hope that the upcoming holiday season gives everyone a chance to recharge and prepare for 2023.

For more news on upcoming projects, please join our mailing lists by visiting this page and signing on today!

We do not yet have exact launch dates for our next Kickstarter campaigns, so please follow both Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23 on Kickstarter so that you don't miss anything.

November 2, 2022: FnordCon 6 – From Your Home

FnordCon 6 is coming, and you can enjoy it from the comfort of your home! This is an online convention, held mostly on our Discord but slopping over to Twitch and Tabletop Simulator  for a few events. Needless to say, everything is free! (In fact, considering that our online dealers and Warehouse 23 have some special convention offers, you could turn a profit on the event.)

Phil and I will do a What's New presentation. Jimmie and Hunter will face off in a Car Wars grudge match. We'll present Will Schoonover's Tabletop Simulator implementation of my upcoming Tabloids game. The con suite will be open the whole time for general chat with a lot of the staff. And there's more; see the schedule.

If you're already on our Discord, you don't have to do anything special – the convention rooms will appear at 5pm Friday when the con starts. If you're not yet on the Discord, you have plenty of time to join and bang around on the interface: the link to join us is https://discord.gg/2zdUmeMkSW. Feel free to share that, of course.

Please come see us. The more, the merrier!

October 30, 2022: It Came From The Trailer Park

[Image] The horror anthology It Came From The Trailer Park made a gleefully gory splash last October. Now there's a second volume, right in time for Halloween reading. Good ole boys vs. vampires? Tide fans vs. zombies? The monsters ain't got a chance, brother.

This stupendous showcase of Southern splatter comes from Three Ravens, a relatively new publishing house headquartered in Tennessee. They're bringing a lot of opportunities to the many new science fiction, fantasy, and horror writers coming out of Southern fandom. So the Trailer Park project was absolutely on-brand. And a great read . . . And the second one turns out to be at least as good.

If it isn't obvious where I'm going: this is a plug!

Scott Tackett of Three Ravens is a friend (we will soon make a joint announcement on another project entirely), and I'm excited to see his new book thiiiiis close to a couple of first-place tags on Amazon. So if short horror fiction is your Halloween candy, throw some love their way.
