The Waterfall is Today

As you know the pond was created months ago but scheduling problems made it impossible for the contractor to create the waterfall.  Finally, W-Day is here.  We started with a bleak landscape courtesy of the cold and frost.  The rocks are dirty but the first rain will take care of that.  Only one more stage to go.  Get the well and the pump in and Lil Farm will have its pond.  Can’t wait.

In the beginning

Laying rocks is harder than it looks.

Care Giving in Branford

Branford Library is always a favorite venue for all of us local authors.  The staff is so encouraging and thoughtful and this visit was no exception.  Just a couple of snapshots before we began talking about the trials and the rewards of caregiving.  The reception I received was wonderful and my hour stretched to an hour and a half.  The women attending had great questions and wonderful stories.

Visit to Sunny South Florida

Impulses are fun and I give into them often.  This impulse was a quick turn around trip to my old stomping grounds for a little break.  Left the top of the state on Monday morning and zipped south, following the sun.  Pictures below are a favorite eatery overlooking a man made lake.  Great food, lots of fun and family.  Later there was a  stop over at my favorite Inn and then back in the rental for the trip home which was great until we ended up in a pile up on the interstate. Thankfully the first collision was clearing and I didn’t see any emergency vehicles zipping away.  The second collision was an explosion of car parts in the rear view mirror as someone raced through bad weather and slick roads without bothering to slow down.  Again, thankfully, I heard later, no one was seriously hurt.

Spring Is Coming

Although the temperature certainly doesn’t reflect it, spring is nipping at Lil Farms heals.  Still lots of chores to get finished before the mowing marathon starts.  This last week has been a race to be ready for the burn of the Sandhill Meadow and the pine tree stand.  Everyone was on standby for the big day.  The weather changed from moment to moment but we finally made it.  The fires were lit on Thursday.  A water truck stood by and the men worked very carefully to keep the flames zipping along the ground so that only the marked areas were touched by the flames.  Since Lil Farm has deer and other animals in the trees, we took special care in making sure that the area was clear of wildlife and that the fire had escape areas as well.  The result was everything we had hoped.  The pictures below show the results.  In the spring the land will come back stronger than ever.

The Friends of Music

Attended a wonderful performance at the Friends of Music Concert Series with a group of friends.  The night was clear and cold but the music was warm and uplifting.  UNF Chamber Singers is an ensemble of talented young people from all academic majors. The conductor, Dr. Cara Tasher, brought a vivacity and skill to the evening, engaging the audience with her coments and her clear love of music.  My friends and I can’t wait for the next offering of the Friends of Music. Our group started with two and we are now up to six which requires two cars.  At the rate we’re going, we may end up with a convoy.

IRS Scam Alert!!

Phone rings and an automated voice says this is your final notice. The IRS is suing you.  Call 206 ….. for more details.

NO, this isn’t a scene out of one of my books. This was my morning on Thursday. I wrote down the number then called the Sheriff’s office. They gave me a hot line number to the State Attorney. Both said it was a scam.  In the process, I had to wonder what if someone had a heart attack because of this kind of call? Would the party responsible be guilty of murder? I am already thinking of scenes. A day in the life of a writer is filled with possibilities.

Relay for Life

Had the honor of doing a presentation to members of our local Relay for Life group.  Although the meeting was small the committment to the goal was huge.  Caregiving is a major factor when dealing with illnesses such as cancer and I tried to touch on some of the hints listed in Care Giving: Real Life Answers.  Being stopped for more details after the presentation by a few of the audience members was a lovely ending to a delightful evening.

Sorry no pictures. Forgot my camera. Left the house in thirty degree weather after two wardrobe changes. Running late.  That’s my story and I am sticking to it.

Cold is Coming

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I am glad the cold is dipping into my part of Florida.  The cold snap will mean that the first ever burn off for the pine forest and my newly created sandhill meadow can take place.  Got the fire breaks done on Monday, now we are all just waiting for that perfect clear, calm day to burn.  Then it is seeding and planting time and a new well to fill the pond before spring.  Can’t wait.  Pictures to come when we get set up.

Altrusa Christmas Tour of Homes

I had an opportunity to take the holiday tour of homes in my county with a friend.  We had awonderful time, starting with a golf cart ride from car to mansion for the beginning of the tour.  The pictures below were taken at the newly restored Heritage Park. There were six houses in all and each very different from the others.  Had a wonderful time and met a lot of people and got great ideas for next year’s decorations.
