April 13, 2024: The Crime Binge continues its solid streak!
A Shop for Killers (2024)
An action drama in which a niece who lost her parents and grew up in the hands of an uncle who runs a shopping mall, faces a new truth after her uncle’s sudden death.
My thoughts: A quirky Korean shoot-em-up that hits all the right notes.
4/5
Broen/The Bridge (2011 – 2018) Season 4
It’s almost two years later and Saga and Henrik reunite when a high-ranking government official is brutally murdered near Øresund Bridge.
My thoughts: Although it lost a little something with the departure of Kim Bosnia, the series still remains one of the best crime shows out there – and finishes strong in its fourth and final season.
4/5
The Bequeathed (2024)
A story in which ominous things continue and the secrets of the family are revealed as they suddenly inherit the family mountain from their uncle, whom they had forgotten.
My thoughts: A pretty taught thriller up until its somewhat nonsensical final episode.
3.5/5
Feedback (2023)
An alcohol-addicted former rock musician, Marcin Kania, sets off on a journey into the darkest corners of Warsaw and the human psyche to find his missing son.
My thoughts: Less of a thriller and more of a reflection on the destructive effects alcohol can have on an individual and those around them. Halfway through, I guessed where we were headed, but that didn’t make it any less devastating when we got there.
4/5
Aranyelet/Golden Life (2015 – 2018) Season 1
A corrupt businessman and family man attempts to navigate his way through increasing domestic, legal, and financial problems.
My thoughts: A terrific exploration of a fractured family on the edge, and the lengths they will go to in order to ensure their survival.

Best: The intense matcha doughnut of course.
Worst: A number of worthy contenders here but I think hot dog seltzer edges out the leek ice cream.
And you?

April 11, 2024: Sundry Matters!
Someone is parked in my parking spot! I received the news this morning, went down to check and, sure enough, there it was, sitting there in all of its shiny white Audi glory. I was annoyed. To be fair, I sold my car some five years ago and either walk everywhere or occasionally use public transport or uber to get around, but I allow the building’s cleaning lady to make free use of my parking spot – something she was unable to do this morning because some jackass decided to help themselves. According to the security feed, it’s someone who doesn’t even live in the building who accessed the parking level by following someone else in. I contacted the parking authority who write them up a $75 ticket. That was at around 9:00 a.m. Some 6+ hours later, the SUV is still there. So next step is to have it towed if it’s still there tonight.
David Chang called a trademark bully for attempting to claim control of chili crunch market.
I have heard a little over a half dozen stories about David Change. Absolutely none of them good. By all indications, one of the truly shittiest people in the food industry.
Visited Le Genie the other day with Sharky (while Akemi went shopping) for their astounding pistachio tart and delicious mocha.
Most of my life, I’ve been a fan of the decadent creamy cheeses like Brillat-Savarin, Chateau de Bourgogne, and Torta Mascarpone, but lately I’ve acquired an appreciation for some of the harder cheeses – long thin slices of Mimolette or white truffle Manchego that I allow to melt on my tongue for a few seconds before enjoying their crystal-studded texture.
Where do you all fall on the cheese spectrum? What are some of your favorites?

April 9, 2024: The Crime Binge continues – A few to my liking!
Traces (2019 – 2022) Season 1
While attending an online forensic course, young lab assistant discovers that the fictitious case study has a link to her past. With the help of two female professors she works on bringing a killer to justice.
My thoughts: Okay forensic thriller that never quite attains the lofty story-telling heights of an Unforgotten. Notable for its casting of a protagonist who looks 14, making the romantic sub-plot kind of creepy.
3/5
Bosch (2014 – 2021) Season 1
An L.A.P.D. homicide detective works to solve the murder of a 13-year-old boy while standing trial in federal court for the murder of a serial killer.
My thoughts: Lots of buzz about this one, but I found it formulaic, from the stock characters to the cliche dialogue.
3/5
Elite (2018 – 2024) Season 1
When three working-class teenagers begin attending an exclusive private school in Spain, the clash between them and the wealthy students leads to murder.
My thoughts: Over-the-top mystery teen soap done right.
4/5
Fargo (2014 – 2024) Season 2
In a small Minnesota town, a shooting at a diner disrupts the lives of a state officer, a married couple, and a North Dakota crime syndicate.
My thoughts: This season surpasses the show’s impressive first season, delivering a top-notch darkly humorous off-kilter small-town thriller.
4.5/5
Australian Gangster (2021) 1 season
A wild tale of ruthless ambition and revenge, set within the Sydney underworld, where gangsters and the Instagram generation collide with Sydney’s glamorous social elite.
My thoughts: The reviews were not kind so I wasn’t expecting much but came away impressed with the tight, tragicomic story-telling and a surprisingly endearing fuck-up wannabe gangster played by Alexander Bertrand.

April 8, 2024: Anti-Eclyptic!
Yesterday, I sat down to desserts (and mocha) at Geste Croissanterie with astronomers Lauren and Seery who were planning to brave the crowds for today’s eclipse. And Lauren came bearing gifts: a pair of eclipse-viewing glasses and a stuffed sharky for Sharky!
We chatted Stargate, Dark Matter, books, and telescopes as we sampled four desserts: the kouign-amman, the Supreme Croissant stuffed with hazelnut cream and nuts, the chocolate-pistachio croissant, and the chocolate chip cookie. As is the custom when dining with me, I had everyone rank the dishes. Surprisingly, each of our rankings were wildly different. Always a good sign.
I tried to explain to Sharky that since he doesn’t have any eyes, he won’t need to protect them during the eclipse, but he wasn’t hearing it. I think he feels the glasses make him look distinguished.
I was told that, here in Toronto, the eclipse would start at 2:04 p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. with a peak at 3:19 p.m. It was super exciting and I took photos to document this rare phenomenon…

Well, that was underwhelming.
Okay, on to the next big thing. What’ve we got? Meteor shows? Super moons? Asteroid?

April 7, 2024: Sharky Sunday!
Sleepy boy
Coffee outing
Kicking up a storm…

His new favorite thing to do: play dead…

That nose is always on sniff mode…

Sharky perfecting his soccer dive…

Good night, Sharky!

April 5, 2024: Eclipsalypse Now!
So, how’re you all ushering in the Eclipsaylpse? Apparently, people are attending watch parties.
From what I understand, it’s dangerous to stare directly at an eclipse so you either have to peer at them through a pinhole in a piece of cardboard or watch them in mirrored reflection. Or is that basilisks? I always get the two confused.
Anyway, burning a hole in your retina may be the least of your problems as conspiracy theories abound regarding this extra special eclipsalypse. In a best case scenario, we may get away with a mere stock market crash. A more dire prediction seems the world shaken by a series of immense earthquakes. I, of course, dismissed the notion as nonsense, and then that earthquake in Taiwan the other day…
Followed by that earthquake in New York today…
Of course it’s nonsense. But just to be on the safe side, I’ve stocked up on La Croix, tin cod livers, and chocolate.
On a somewhat related note, came across this old article about what the continents will look like after the looming polar shift/nuclear war/alien invasion.
Oh, remind me to pick up more dog food!

April 4, 2024: Watching!
A snapshot of my Letterbox’d horror ratings – from my favorite films to the movies I’d recommend to my enemies…
I’d say almost 300 horror movies. At the time, I thought it quite a feat but, fast-forward a year (or two), and I’m approximately 280 shows into my ongoing Crime Binge. And I’ve been listing my favorites – in particular order – on this thread here:
BEST of the #CrimeBinge
24. Delhi Crime (2019 – ) 2 Seasons – India
Based on the Nirbhaya case, Delhi Crime follows the Delhi Police investigation into the finding of the men who perpetrated this crime. https://t.co/xzJBu2Xnsj pic.twitter.com/IJh9sZgtRR

But plan to do a rundown for this blog.
And just when I think I’ve caught up (a ridiculous assumption in hindsight) I end up discovering a treasure trove of recommendations. I just added another 50+ titles to my watch-list!
So, what have you all been watching and enjoying?
