May 22, 2024: News of Note!

Do you think they could be preparing us for something?

I grow increasingly impatient with Hollywood…

My bad..

Follow the science…

I assume this is painfully obvious to everyone but the executives green lighting these sink holes…

Rigorous testing reveals the tastiest part of the chicken is, in fact, the butt…

May 21, 2024: Crime Binge – 5 more shows to consider/reconsider!

Wisting (2019 – ) Season 1

Homicide detective William Wisting struggles with the two toughest cases of his career. His serial killer investigation crosses paths with his journalist daughter’s news story, putting her in grave danger.

My thoughts: The first season offers two mysteries – the first is solid Nordic Noir, but the second really knocks it out of the park.  Recommended.

4/5

Wentworth (2013 – 2021) Season 2

A dynamic often confronting drama series our story follows Bea Smith, a housewife coming to terms with her new life inside one of Australia’s toughest prisons.

My thoughts: While I did miss Kris McQuade’s ruthless Martha Stewartesque Jacs Holt, I found the equally ruthless and infinitely scarier Governor Joan Ferguson a terrific addition to an already solid cast.  Great.

4.5/5

Le Chalet / The Chalet (2018-2019)

A reunion of childhood friends at a remote chalet in the French Alps soon turns into a desperate struggle for survival as they get cut off from rest of the world and a shocking dark secret from the past surfaces.

My thoughts: Contrived (no land line or cell phone services available) aside, there are some pretty dumb moments here in addition to a questionable lottery sub-plot.

2.5/5

Terriers (2010)

Ex-cop and recovering alcoholic Hank Dolworth partners with his best friend, former criminal Britt Pollack, in an unlicensed private investigation business.

My thoughts: Was really hoping to like this as the premise and series tone seems right up my alley and it came highly recommended by people whose taste I trust, but as much as I liked the characters and the banter, I thought found cases and somewhat “cable-dated”.

3.5/5

Bad Guys / Nappeun Nyeoseokdeul (2014)

Reinstated to eradicate the worst crimes in the city, a detective requests the release of three convicts to enlist their help in catching the felons still at large.

My thoughts: High operatics meet high-octane action in this twist-laden thriller that plays like a Korean gangster Dirty Dozen.

4.5/5

May 20, 2024: Checking out MHZChoice, LinkedIn’s dubious connections, and Lord Baal reigns supreme!

In case you missed it, the Stargate’s Greatest Villain Tournament final pitted Anubis vs Baal and, in the end, our winner –

He was certainly the most fun villain to write for, and much of it had to do with Cliff Simon’s brilliant performance.  Legend.

I don’t know, LinkedIn.  I don’t know…

I got a subscription to MHZChoice, “You Passport to the Best International TV”.  One week and a little over a dozen shows in, I would dispute “Best”, but it certainly offers a bunch of titles I can’t find anywhere else.  Whether the service is worth it in the end will really depend on the overall quality of the shows I check out – and I do intend to check out a lot of them before the end of my monthly subscription.  So far, I saw two I would heartily recommend, a Turkish thriller series called Persona and a German comedy about a Crime Scene Cleaner called, appropriately enough, The Crime Scene Cleaner (That I’ll eventually be covering here on the blog).  The rest have been pretty average.  We shall see…

May 19, 2024: Sharky Sunday!

Out and about with m’boy!

He enjoys a more leisurely walk with plenty of breaks for belly rubs…

A lazy walker but a pretty intense, high impact sleeper…

LOVES his toilet paper rolls…

Getting his steps in…

Sharky’s average Sunday afternoon…

Loves to get his butt scrubbed…

May 18, 2024: Back on the Crime Binge!

Fargo (2014 – 2024) Season 3

Follows the lives of a couple, Ray Stussy and Nikki Swango, who, after unsuccessfully trying to rob Ray’s wealthy older brother Emmit, become involved in a double murder case.

My thoughts: Not quite as strong as the show’s second season, yet nevertheless a quirky and compelling character-driven story.

4/5

The Sopranos (1997 – 2007) Season 2

New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano deals with personal and professional issues in his home and business life that affect his mental state, leading him to seek professional psychiatric counseling.

My thoughts: A fantastic season that introduces the menacing likes of Furio and Richie Aprile while also bringing back one of my favorite characters, Janice Soprano.  Brilliant.

5/5

Mob City (2013)

1947, Los Angeles. Cop Joe Teague walks the line between the LAPD, led by William Parker, and the mob, led by Bugsy Siegel.

My thoughts: Torturously over-stylized to the point one might be excused for assuming it was a parody.  Inflicted only six episodes on the viewing public before taking a well-deserved dirt nap.

2/5

Murder in Provence (2022)

Antoine Verlaque, Investigating Judge in Aix-en-Provence with his romantic partner Marine Bonnet, investigates the murders, mysteries and dark underbelly of their idyllic home in the south of France.

My thoughts: While I really did enjoy the character dynamics between the husband and wife investigative leads, the mysteries were just okay.

3/5

Get Shorty (2017 – 2019)

The adventures of a mobster-turned-movie producer in Hollywood. TV show based on Elmore Leonard’s novel and subsequent film.

My thoughts: If you liked the movie, you may find this series mildly inoffensive.  Or you may hate this sluggishly executed, terribly miscast series that feels like it’s trying to be Fargo but comes up woefully short.

2.5/5

May 17, 2024: The results are in! Prepare to be unamazed!

The results of Sharky’s DNA test are in and they are…underwhelming!

I guessed mostly pug but probably some beagle.  Maybe mastiff or boxer.  Perhaps a touch of dachshund?

We sent away the samples three weeks ago and today were alerted to the results.

Are you ready?

Yep.  Mostly pug.  I’m not surprised he’s majority pug but kind of surprised by how much pug given the big ears, stubby legs, and sausage-like body.

But maybe there are answers in that 7.5%?

Unresolved?  DNA too small to assign to any one breed?  Come on.

So the best they can do is guess…

I mean sure, it’s possible.

I guess.

How uncertainly uninteresting.

In other news, the semifinal results are in in the Stargate Greatest Villain Tournament.  To no one’s surprise, neither was particularly close…

Which sets up our BIG championship finale.  It’s Anubis vs Baal.  Who ya got?

To be honest, I was expecting a Baal-Todd finale so these championship possibilities kind of surprise me.  Kinsey is quite the dark horse.  I honestly expected Apophis to triumph over Anubis given the characters longer history with the franchise, but I can see the evil appeal of the cloaked one.  What do you all think?

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) May 14, 2024

I lean Apophis just because of his longer history, but Anubis has his supporters.

The #Stargate Greatest Villain Tournament!
Round 2: Baal vs Adria
Cast your vote!

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) May 14, 2024

I’ve got to go with the stylish Baal, one of the most fun System Lords to write for.

The #Stargate Greatest Villain Tournament!
Round 2: Todd vs Senator Kinsey
Cast your vote!

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) May 14, 2024

I’ve always been a fan of the bad guys that turn into unlikely allies so I’m going with Todd here.

The #Stargate Greatest Villain Tournament!
Round 2: Michael vs Kolya
Cast your vote!

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) May 14, 2024

Loved Kolya, but Michael was too nuanced a villain to deny.

My Final Four Picks: Apophis, Baal, Todd, and Michael
