July 2, 2024: Now I’m getting notes on projects I’m not even working on!

Today I received the following email: ”

“Hi Joseph,

A bit of editing on the Sc. 26.

P 22 Should read after Charlie says “And send me his address. Can’t wait to meet this guy.”

Charlie: A Uniformed Officer is holding him at the warehouse. I’m sending you the address. (or something like that)

Jesse: All in a day’s work, huh,  Good job.

Otherwise reads like he’s being brought in and is a bit confusing.

Thanks for all this though.”

Charlie?

Jesse?

I was confused, checked the sender.  It was an executive I had exchanged emails with in the past, but not someone I had actually worked with.  As I was trying to make sense of the email, I received another email, this time from a second executive who had been cc’d on the first:

“Joseph, once these changes are made we can release but take a beat to read it over tonight because it doesn’t play until next week.”

Her I did not know.  Obviously, they had the wrong Joseph.  I thought of just ignoring the mistake but figured the other Joseph might catch flak for not making the necessary script changes.  On the other hand, sending an email along the lines of: “Guys, wrong Joseph” felt kind of embarrassing.  After some thought, I opted for the following group response:

“Hey All,

I”m working on a rewrite that kind of changes the fourth act so that Charlie and Jesse end up adopting a pet monkey who can figure into future episodes helping to solve crimes and offering comic relief but some pathos as well as he was also abandoned by his father.  He’ll be sort of like Marcel from the first season of Friends but with more of an attitude.Hope you like this idea.  I was going to pitch you first before writing but figured we were pressed for time so I just went ahead and did it.Can’t wait to get your thoughts!Joe”Here’s hoping they love the idea.

June 29, 2024: The Crime Binge Returns!

The Brokenwood Mysteries (2014 – ) Season 1

Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd arrives on assignment in Brokenwood, a small town where memories – and animosities – run deep.

My thoughts: Found this one fairly bland with some cliche characters and a weird Western soundtrack.

3/5

Gomorrah (2014 – 2021) Season 2

Ciro disregards tradition in his attempt to become the next boss of his crime syndicate. The internal power struggle puts him and his entire family’s life at risk.

My thoughts: This top-notch Italian mob show grows darker still in its second season 2, constantly upending audience expectations.

4.5/5

Baby (2018 – 2020) Season 1

A coming-of-age story that explores the unseen lives of Roman high schoolers. Loosely inspired by a true story, the series follows a group of Parioli teenagers as they defy society in their search for identity and independence

My thoughts: Elite without the finesse.

3/5

McMafia (2018) Season 1

Alex Godman has spent his life trying to escape the shadow of his family’s past. But when a murder unearths their past, Alex is drawn into the criminal underworld where he must confront his values to protect those he loves.

My thoughts: The title is appropriate as its the fast food equivalent to much better mob shows.

3/5

Bang Bang Baby (2022) Season 1

Alice is a teenage girl who finds herself involved in the Milan’s criminal underbelly for the love of her father. To cope, Alice will use her imagination, influenced by music, TV and pop culture of her time: the 80s.

My thoughts: Like a high calorie cake – visually appealing, delicious at first, but ultimately insubstantial.

3.5/5

Finally, an update about our extended blog family member Ponytail via Drea:

“Surgery went well. Doctor is very pleased. She still has more treatments to go through – but outlook now improved.”Great to hear and let’s all wish her a speedy recovery!

June 25, 2024: The Tuesday Report!

Yes, things are moving along.  Perhaps not as quickly as I’d hoped.  But they’re moving along.

Fielded a call yesterday about another ongoing project that is close to completing another key stage towards – hopefully – a green light.  The shooting locations for this one have been narrowed down to Hungary and Greece.  For Akemi’s sake, I’m hoping it’s the latter as I think the food scene in Greece (seafood) trumps Hungary (meat).

Incremental progress on the cozy mystery series and the horror-comedy.

Fully supporting Akemi’s renewed interest in baking by eating the hell out of this focaccia.

Recent roast duck lunch with balsamic-glazed cipollini onions.  Pretty delicious.

Akemi’s latest DIY project is a doggy treat box she has placed outside our door for the other dog owners (and dogs).

What do you think of this…

I don’t know if I could eat nothing but meat for a week.  On the other hand, if this guy was cooking for me…

Finally, closing this entry with a dedication to blog regular Ponytail who is recovering from surgery.  Wishing her a speedy and full recovery!

June 24, 2024: The Crime Binge continues!

Umbre (2014 – 2019) Season 3

Umbre follows Relu, an enforcer for a small-time mob boss, as he struggles to keep his family in the dark about his job. The secrets Relu keeps become increasingly oppressive and the lies begin to surface.

My thoughts: The third and final season caps this series is grand style, with some great revelations, unexpected twists, a shocking demise, and one of my very favorite endings that includes this gorgeous (NO SPOILERS) closing sequence to Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll”.

5/5  Absolutely no notes!

Gomorrah (2014 – 2021) Season 1

Ciro disregards tradition in his attempt to become the next boss of his crime syndicate. The internal power struggle puts him and his entire family’s life at risk.

My thoughts: The grand-daddy of Italian mob shows is probably as dark as it gets.  Heavy on the mayhem and melodrama, but great character dynamics.

4.5/5

Fauda (2015 – 2022) Season 1

The human stories on both sides of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

My thoughts: Hmmmm.  This one came very highly recommended, but I couldn’t past the first episode that saw the “good guys” execute the sloppiest of ops, crash a wedding, hold a woman hostage, then shoot a guy who tries to rescue her – in the back.  Later, our hero chases down another suspect and shoots him in the back as well.  Your mileage may vary.

3/5

Criminal: Spain (2019) 1 season

Psychological games abound between detectives and suspects in a tense interrogation room, where the search for answers sometimes comes at a moral cost.

My thoughts: The Spanish version of the Criminal franchise follows in the underwhelming footsteps of its English and French counterparts, delivering a perfectly average drama.

3/5

Criminal: Germany (2019) 1 season

In the interview room, detectives go head-to-head with suspects and try to get to the truth – even if it means breaking the rules and risking it all.

My thoughts: Finally, the Criminal franchise gets it right, delivering on the promise of its premise with a compelling interrogation that actually builds in suspense and pays off its set-ups in satisfying fashion.

4/5

June 23, 2024: Sharky Sunday!

This boy has a new nickname…

He is Little Houdini!  Today, he used his big block head to push open the front door that had been sitting ajar for cross-ventilation, then went on a little adventure – down the hall, past the elevator lobby, to the hallway on the other side of the floor where he started barking for attention.

We now have to keep an eye on this pint-sized escape artist.

Crispy salmon…

Oh, no!  Bath time!

Sharky does the laundry…

Sharky – out and about at the food court…

Strawberry Boy…

Sharky trying to grab the attention of passersby…
