June 1, 2024: The Weekend Report!
My chat with Theo Priestley on the Days of Future Passed podcast:
Uh oh. We went to a local bake shop to pick up some bread for my wife. They offered to slice it for us but it was only after we had left that we realized they had trimmed off the crusty ends…Akemi’s favorite part! She has vowed never to go back. Thoughts?
Over on twitter, I do a daily This Day in Supervillain History segment. Today, among the villains profiled, was the Clockmaster…
Take a closer look at Clockmaster…
Does he remind you of anyone?
Also, posted this on twitter last night. I assumed everyone already knew…
But, surprisingly, many fans did not. Did you?

May 31, 2024: The Crime Binge continues!
Bedrag/Follow the Money (2016-2019) Season 1
A big Danish sustainable energy company has had an enormous, suspect growth. Problems start, when an employee’s body is found and cop detective Justesen starts investigating Energreen.
My thoughts: A terrific, tightly-written corporate espionage thriller with some great twists and turns.
4/5
Fargo (2014 – 2024) Season 4
An uneasy peace between two Kansas City crime syndicates is threatened by an untimely death; the Smutny family is caught between a rock and a hard place.
My thoughts: By far the weakest season of this otherwise top-notch series. To be honest, I found it a bit of a slog.
3.5/5
Blinded by the Lights (2018)
An eight-episode story charting seven days from the life of a cocaine dealer whose perfectly organized life begins to sink into chaos while he is forced to make the most important choices in his life.
My thoughts: Kind of weird and out there, but visually dynamic and incredibly compelling.
4/5
Death and Other Details (2024)
Detective Rufus Cotesworth and his protégé, Imogene, dig for the truth on a Mediterranean ocean liner where everyone is hiding something.
My thoughts: Slow, convoluted, devoid of interesting characters and the ending is implausible.
2.5/5
Dark Winds (2022 – ) Season 1
Follows Leaphorn and Chee, two Navajo police officers in the 1970s Southwest that are forced to challenge their own spiritual beliefs when they search for clues in a double murder case.
My thoughts: Flat performances. To be honest, I found it kind of corny.
2.5/5

May 27, 2024: The Crime Binge continues – 1 out of 5 ain’t bad!
Bodyguard (2018) 1 Season
Troubled war veteran turned Police Officer David Budd is assigned to the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Protection Branch.
My thoughts: Clearly one of those shows that was not well thought-out in the writers’ room. Plot holes a’plenty!
2.5/5
Signora Volpe (2022 – ) 1 Season
Sylvia, a disillusioned British spy turned detective starts a new life in the beautiful heart of Italy. She soon finds out trouble follows her wherever she goes.
My thoughts: A little too staid, a little too silly. Some of the plotting a little too dubious.
3/5
Criminal: France (2019) 1 Season
Secrets emerge and entire cases unravel inside a police interview room in Paris, where suspects and investigators face off in an intricate dance.
My thoughts: The French version of this interrogation room series suffers from the same problems as its U.K. counterpart – instead of building a case (and plot) against the suspect, key evidence is simply withheld until an opportune time later in the story, thus resulting in a very unsatisfying narrative. Another miss.
3/5
Suriname/Narco Saints (2022)
The life-threatening journey of a civilian businessman who has no choice but to cooperate with the secret operation of the National Intelligence Service.
My thoughts: In an attempt to cash in on the Narcos craze, Netflix did this series the disservice of renaming it. It’s too bad because fans of the Narcos franchise expecting a tie-in will be disappointed. But anyone else going in with no preconceived notions will be treated to a terrific South Korean thriller that I, personally, enjoyed more than afore-mentioned Narcos.
4/5
Suburraeterna (2023 – ) 1 Season
While chaos rules over Rome, established alliances are at risk as tensions rise with emerging criminal clans. The world of “Suburra” takes a new turn.
My thoughts: Alas, the laws of diminishing returns were catching up with the original series in its final episode, and the decline continues in this spinoff series that proves just way too heavy on the melodrama.
3/5

This boy has never met a woman’s voice he didn’t like. Whenever he is on a walk and hears a woman speak, he will sit patiently until she walks over and gives him attention.
