April 1, 2024: The Crime Binge continues!

One of Us is Lying (2021 – 2022)

A brain, an athlete, a princess, a criminal and a “basket case” walk into detention–but only the first four make it out alive.

My thoughts: Gossip Girl-like murder mystery centering on soap and teen angst.  A light-weight adaptation of a pretty good book.

2.5/5

Irmandade/Brotherhood (2019 – ) Season 1

A hard-working lawyer discovers that her missing brother has been jailed for years and is a leader of an ascendant criminal faction.

My thoughts: Little nuance in this somewhat cliched, fairly straight-forward tale of corruption inside Brazil’s penal system.

3/5

Wentworth (2013 – 2021) Season 1

The confronting look into the lives of the inmates and prison staff of Wentworth Correctional Centre as they navigate the ups and downs of their lives in the prison system.

My thoughts: More grounded and more compelling than its American counterpart Orange is the New Black.  Loved Ruthless Martha Stewart.

4/5

Fargo (2014 – 2024) Season 1

Various chronicles of deception, intrigue, and murder in and around frozen Minnesota. All of these tales mysteriously lead back one way or another to Fargo, North Dakota.

My thoughts: A quirky, character-rich successor to the offbeat film.

4/5

Griselda (2024)

Fleeing from Medellín to Miami, Griselda Blanco creates one of the most ruthless cartels in history.

My thoughts: Tepid dramatization of the rise and fall of a drug queen.  The performances vacillate between underwhelming and hammy.

2.5/5

March 30, 2024: Updates!

Some of the recent supervillain-themed t-shirts that arrived over the past month.  I’ve amassed a pretty sizable collection, none of which I have worn.  I’ve been waiting to get a green light for a summer show so that I can show off a different villain for every day of prep, production, and post.  Unfortunately, the series I was expecting to fall into this particular category has hit a bit of a snag.  Not sure what’s up but communication has gotten a little…spotty of late.  And I know from experience what that means.

Along those same lines, the horror comic has also hit a snag.  After many months of no feedback, I received some fairly sizable notes.  I responded with some thoughts of my own – how I would address some suggestions, why I didn’t think other suggestions worked, etc.  And then…another two months of radio silence.  Finally heard back that they took exception to my respond to their input.  To be fair, I didn’t realize their notes were defacto dictation and assumed they were part of a collaborative conversation.  My bad.  In the end, however, I’m not so bothered.  To be honest, the single face-to-face I had with their team did not exactly inspire confidence.

Meanwhile, have yet one more run-thru for that pitch for action-adventure series in advance of the pre-pitch the following week.

Many a hoop still to jump through!

What do you and your partner disagree about most?

I asked Akemi and, not surprisingly, she said exactly what I was thinking: Whether Sharky gets enough treats.  She firmly believes he over-indulges while I, of course, am of the opinion that he does’t get enough.  The truth, as they say, falls somewhere in between.

March 29, 2024: The Crime Binge continues!

Warrior (2019 – 2023) Season 1

During the Tong Wars in the late 1800s, Ah Sahm, a martial arts prodigy from China, immigrates to San Francisco and becomes a hatchet man for the most powerful tong in Chinatown.

My thoughts: I found it unbearably cheesy, but action fans may not mind.

3/5

Mindhunter (2017 – 2019) Season 1

In the late 1970s, two FBI agents broaden the realm of criminal science by investigating the psychology behind murder and end up getting too close to real-life monsters.

My thoughts: Great-looking and conceptually interesting, but everything not involving the profiling is deadly dull, especially our lead.  Highly recommended for serial killer aficionados.

3.5/5

The Nurse (2023)

A new nurse at a hospital begins to suspect that her colleague’s desire for attention might be tied to a series of patient deaths.

My thoughts: Not a bad little thriller, but it does, at times, leave you wondering about certain illogical moments…until you realize it’s based on a true story.

3.5/5

The Fall (2013 – 2016 ) Season 1

A seemingly cold but very passionate policewoman goes head to head with a seemingly passionate father who is in fact a cold serial killer in this procedural out of Belfast. The only thing they share is their common complexity.

My thoughts: Anders and Dorman are terrific in this taut thriller, but it’s difficult to judge a season that leaves so many storylines unresolved.

3.5/5

The Fall (2013 – 2016) Season 2

A seemingly cold but very passionate policewoman goes head to head with a seemingly passionate father who is in fact a cold serial killer in this procedural out of Belfast. The only thing they share is their common complexity.

My thoughts: A riveting first season is followed by a shaky second season rife with implausibilities and suspect policing that feels more plot-prescribed than logic-based.

2.5/5

March 26, 2024: Important T.V.-related questions!

Rescue one t.v. character from their on-screen death.
Who are you saving? pic.twitter.com/rMi9rzDGNa

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) March 23, 2024

This one stands out for me, not so much because they killed him off but because of the way they killed him off.  It was gruesome, upsetting, and undeserving of the character.  It was the one and only time the death of a character affecting me so deeply as a viewer that I actually stopped watching the show.  And, it turns out, I wasn’t the only one.

Who is a t.v. character you hated at first but ended up loving? pic.twitter.com/YIRbwZAPzM

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) March 26, 2024

To be honest, this one was a toss up between Jamie Lannister and this guy…

Not surprised to see a lot of followers answer Dark Matter’s THREE for this one.  I recall perusing the internet the day after the show premiered and reading almost universal dislike for the character.  The plan, of course, was to introduce these characters – seeming cliches because of their lack of backstory – and then gradually subvert audience expectations.  Like my college psych professor once told me, former friends make the worst of enemies while former enemies make the best of friends.  That’s exactly what I was looking for, a redemption in the eyes of the viewers that would have them eventually fall in love with the character.  But seeing all those negative reactions to the character, I’ll admit I was a little concerned.  And I admitted to actor Anthony Lemke that I’d feared I’d gone too far.  But he just laughed it off.  He’d read the scripts for the next nine episodes, knew what we had in store for our audience, and he wasn’t concerned in the least.  He knew that they’d eventually fall in love with his character.  And he was right.  They did.  By the end of season 3, viewer scores put THREE and Android as the audience favorites.

Who is a t.v. character you initially loved but ended up hating? https://t.co/OAQDdp58GY pic.twitter.com/jqOtH9Fn5h

— Joseph Mallozzi 🏴‍☠️ (@BaronDestructo) March 27, 2024

This one stands out because it was the most recent.  Loved this character in the beginning of Better Call Saul as I’d already been introduced to him in Breaking Bad and, throughout the BCS’s first five seasons, I loved his character.  Then, in season six, the show and character take a very dark turn and so much screen time is spent detailing Saul’s mean spirited targeting of Howard Hamlin, a good-hearted character who effectively has his life destroyed.  Bleak.  And off-putting.

*

And how would you respond to the aforementioned questions?

March 25, 2024: The Crime Binge continues!

Ferry: The Series (2023)

Before “Undercover’s” Ferry Bouman became a notorious drug lord, he had to rise from obscurity by ascending the ranks of Brabant’s criminal underbelly.

My thoughts: I’m not usually a fan of sequels but the character of Ferry Bouman is an absolute delight.  Given another season or two at this level of quality, I’d prefer this series over the original.

4.5/5

Le Bureau (2015 – 2020) Season 1

A unique and captivating series about the “bureau des légendes”, the mythical powerhouse within the French Secret Service and its dare devil ghost agents.

My thoughts: Smart, intricately plotted espionage thriller that reveals the games nations play with the lives of their citizens.

4.5/5

Only Murders in the Building (2021 – ) Season 3

After Ben Glenroy’s collapse on stage, Charles, Oliver & Mabel piece together the show’s first days with a suspicious cast & crew to determine if foul play was involved.

My thoughts: Kind of loopy, kind of over=the-top, but loads of fun nevertheless.

4/5

After the Party (2023)

Penny loses everything when she accuses her husband of a sex crime against her daughter’s teenage friend and no-one believes her.

My thoughts: Somewhat slow-paced and heavy on the family drama in this dark, depressing, and affective character study.

3.5/5

The Afterparty (2022 – 2023) Season 1

After a high school reunion’s afterparty ends in a death, a detective grills the former classmates one by one, uncovering potential motives as each tells their version of the story – culminating in the shocking truth.

My thoughts: Fitfully funny whodunit with some creatively suspect choices (ie. the cartoon episode).  The detective work is presumptuous nonsense.

3/5
