March 3, 2024: Sharky Sunday!

Bubbie the Penthouse Pug comes for a visit.

Bubbie with a lot more stamina than Sharky

Snapinsta.app_430312486_2135091966850208_4659672689313063612_n_1080

A short nap before dinner

Enjoying some blueberries…

One of those rare moments where he is actually playing with his stuffy…

He’d rather play with empty boxes…especially if they once contained treats…

Nighty Night!

March 2, 2024: The Crime Binge continues!

Undercover (2019 – ) Season 2

Kim’s investigation into illegal Syrian weapons trade leads her to the El Dorado Ranch, a western horse ranch where Bob goes undercover to earn the trust of the brothers Berger, ranch owners & arms dealers.

My thoughts: As much as I enjoyed season 1, season 2 is a let-down as the action shifts to a Country-themed riding school and bar in the Belgian hinterlands.  There’s something inherently silly about Europeans in cowboy hats, especially when they’re villains we’re supposed to fear.

3/5

Save Me (2018 – 2022) Season 2

Nelly hasn’t rested trying to find his missing daughter Jody, he won’t give up, and he will do anything to find out what happened. Discovering things about him and those around him, things he never imagined.

My thoughts: Season 1 was, I thought, a perfect standalone season and while the second season does detract from its near perfection, Lennie James’ return as a father determined to rescue his missing daughter is no less compelling.

4/5

Undercover (2019 – ) Season 3

Hoping to turn his life around, Bob takes on a dangerous undercover mission to root out a police mole, but his path once again crosses with Ferry Bouman.

My thoughts: Mobster Ferry Bouman takes center stage in the show’s third season, becoming an unlikely ally in a bid to Tom Waes’ Bob Lemmens, and its a ton of fun.

4.5.5

Arctic Circle/Ivalo (2018 – ) Season 1

A detective and a virologist pursue an unusual investigation that places them on the wrong side of the law.

My thoughts: Whenever they slip into English, the dialogue gets pretty cheesy.  Pair this with clunky plotting and dubious character interactions and you have a show I could not get through.

DNF

Sweet/Vicious (2016 – 2017)

Hell-bent on bringing justice to those who get away with abuse on their college campus, Jules and Ophelia take on double lives as wannabe vigilantes.

My thoughts: Well damn.  I love the premise and really wanted to like this one, but, in the end, it just feels like a light-weight MTV show – overly quippy, with a silliness that undermines any genuine stakes or drama.

2.5/5

March 1, 2024: End of week updates!

Well, looks like i’m about to close on a deal to rewrite a pilot script that, pending network approval, could see us in Portugal this summer shooting an 8-episode first season.  Next week, I’ll pitch everyone my take on the revised pilot and then, hopefully, turn it around before month’s end.  If everyone is as quick at turning around notes as I am writing, we could be convening a writers’ room in April-May, then prepping in June for an August-September shoot.

Anyone been to Portugal?  I hear the fish and seafood are amazing.  Something for Akemi to look forward to.

If we do go, we will, of course, be bringing Sharky with us so we’ve started looking into the requirements for traveling with a dog.  So far, it looks fairly straightforward and relatively simple.

Sharky may not be traveling alone as we’ve made some inquiries about some pugs in need of a good home.  We’re okay with seniors and special needs, but really need a smaller pug as they will travel with us in-cabin (and I hear Air Canada are being absolute jerks about pet travel of late).

I’d look to pick up the new addition to the family sometime in March as that is when I am looking to be in L.A. to pitch another series.  Ideally, the timing would line up so that once I finish production and post on the Portugal show, I could roll into the writers room for this one – which is looking like it would shoot its first season in Croatia and additional locales throughout Europe.

Looks like this will all force me to put my ongoing Crime Binge on hold.  I’m 224 shows in and the scorecard tallies up thusly:  Thumbs up: 53  Thumbs down: 167  Thumbs sideways: 4

Speaking of putting on hold, I’ve grown increasingly frustrated with twitter and its suppression algos that have suppressed my account’s reach.  So once I finish uploading the last of these Stargate bloopers and cut scenes, I’m going on hiatus for a couple of weeks to see if that resets the algos.  If not, then life’s too short and I have other places to be – like this blog for instance.

Hope all is well with all of you!  The weekend awaits!

February 29, 2024: Musings!

At this point, Google is really not all that different from the "well-intentioned" supervillains of fiction. And it could be argued this have been true for many years now. https://t.co/E6BGvoohcx

February 27, 2024: The Crime Binge continues!

Blood and Water (2020 – ) Season 1

A local teen uncovers her family’s secret past and navigates the complicated world of a South African high school.

My thoughts: Lightweight YA.

3/5

Vera (2011 – ) Season 1

With her caustic wit and singular charm, DCI Vera Stanhope leads her team as they face a series of captivating murder mysteries set against the breathtaking Northumberland landscape.

My thoughts: Liked it, but not enough to keep watching past its first season.

3.5/5

You (2018 – 2024) Season 1

A dangerously charming, intensely obsessive young man goes to extreme measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is transfixed by.

My thoughts: His knack for stalking without being caught feels very convenient after a while.  Also, it’s hard to emotionally invest in such unlikable characters.

3/5

Reyka (2021 – )

In 1994 in South Africa, the daughter of a multiracial couple is kidnapped. She escapes and, as an adult, becomes a detective. Reyka Gama uses her skills to raise her child and solve mysteries.

My thoughts: Gets off to a strong start but then ultimately falls victim to clichés, poor plotting, and suspect character decisions.

3/5

Matrioshka (2005 – 2008) Season 1

A Belgian criminal gang head east to Lithuania to recruit young women desperate to leave their impoverished lives.

My thoughts: Has the look and feel of a 70’s pulp movie.

3/5
