March 11, 2024: Forging ahead with the Crime Binge!

Rectify (2013) Season 1

Daniel Holden must put his life back together after serving 19 years on Georgia’s Death Row before DNA evidence calls his conviction into question.

My thoughts: Slow-moving laconic character drama.

3/5

Animal Kingdom (2016 – 2022) Season 1

Centers on a Southern California family, whose excessive lifestyle is fueled by their criminal activities.

My thoughts: A fine, L.A.-centered Ma Barker riff that feels a little bit too tepid and “networky” at times.

3/5

Narcos (2015 – 2017) Season 1

A chronicled look at the criminal exploits of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, as well as the many other drug kingpins who plagued the country through the years.

My thoughts: An interesting and informative dramatization of true events, but none of the peripheral characters are particularly interesting.  Given the hype, I was expecting better.

3/5

Before We Die (2021 – ) Season 1

Detective Hannah Laing becomes deeply conflicted when she discovers her son is playing a crucial role as an undercover informant in the investigation of a brutal murder.

My thoughts:  Dry.  Perfunctory.  Unremarkable.

DNF

Forhoret/Face to Face (2019 – 2023) Season 1

Bjørn investigates the killing of his daughter. People around him believe she might have committed suicide, but he doesn’t accept that. The stakes and suspense rise as Bjørn inches closer to the truth.

My thoughts: An interesting format but the show grows increasingly ridiculous as the big investigative breaks just fall into our protagonist’s lap.  The coincidental connections between our various players also feels a little absurd after a while.

2.5/5

March 8, 2024: Catching up with the Crime Binge!

Sneaky Pete (2015 – 2019) Season 1

A con man on the run from a vicious gangster assumed the identity of his prison cellmate Pete, reuniting with Pete’s estranged family, which threatens to drag him into a world just as dangerous as the one he’s escaping.

My thoughts: All of Brian Cranston’s scenes are brilliant, but the rest just feels like an average network show.

3/5

Trapped (2015 – ) Season 2

When a man immolates himself and a government Minister outside Parliament in Reykjavik, Police chief Andri Ólafsson is in charge of the case.

My thoughts: It feels like whenever a show does a Nazi-themed storyline, they trot out the B-team writers.

3/5

Maldivas (2022)

To investigate a mystery, a young woman moves into a posh condo community, where she comes into contact with its quirky – and suspicious – residents.

My thoughts: Silly, soapy, overly plotted, but not a bad little mystery.

3.5/5

Broen/The Bridge (2011 – 2018) Season 2

The Bridge (Bron/Broen) follows Detective Saga Norén as she and her colleagues investigate a series of crimes committed around the bridge connecting Sweden and Denmark.

My thoughts: Maintains the quality and great character work of season 1.

4.5/5

Scream (2015 – 2019) Season 1

A serialized anthology series that follows a group of teenagers being targeted by a masked serial killer.

My thoughts: Not bad but it feels very stretched out for what is essentially an extended slasher film.

March 7, 2024: Slow and steady wins the race. And, presumably, gets that show green lit!

Well, pitched my take for the revised pilot script yesterday and the team seemed to like it.  I’ll make a few minor adjustments, brainstorm some ideas for the first season finale with series creator  Denis, then schedule a second pitch with the network.  Once they sign off, I’ll write the script, get THAT approved and after that it’ll be smoooooooth sailing!  In the beautiful waters off Portugal!

Meanwhile, another pitch looms…soon…ish.  I was given a window of something mid to late March and that is fast-approaching.  It would be great to nail down the dates sooner than later as I would rather not be paying 11th hour prices for an L.A. trip.  P.S. Nothing wrong with a good ole-fashioned zoom pitch by the by!

My wife enjoys watching this certain foodie influencer.
Every time he takes a bite of something, he tilts his head back, rolls his eyes, and says: "Wow".
Every. Fucking. Time.
Enchilada = "Wow"
Snake blood wine = "Wow
The cardboard plate beneath that slice of pizza = "Wow

March 5, 2024: Back on the Crime Binge!

Godfather of Harlem (2019 – ) Season 1

A gangster named Bumpy Johnson makes his way in Harlem during the 1960s. A TV prequel to the 2007 film, ‘American Gangster’, which centered on the criminal enterprise of Frank Lucas.

My thoughts: Forest Whittaker is great, but the show just feels like a pastiche of seminal gangster epics.

3/5

Snowfall (2017 – 2023) Season 1

A look at the early days of the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles during the beginning of the 1980s.

My thoughts: Stylistic anachronisms abound in this 80’s era exploration of the cocaine trade.  Borrows heavily from what has come before.

3/5

A Model Family (2022 – )

After unwittingly stealing money from a cartel, a cash-strapped professor finds the only way to save his broken family is by working as a drug courier.

My thoughts: Annoyingly contrived.  Coincidences and illogical decisions drive the plot and conveniently complicate matters.

2.5/5

Cruel Summer (2021 – 2023) Season 1

In this anthology series, each season follows a new cast of characters who deal with traumatic events over several timelines, and how those events impact their lives.

My thoughts: Pretty solid storytelling a cross three timelines but sunk by overwrought dialogue and heavy handed direction.

3.5/5

Boy Swallows Universe (2024)

In 1980s Brisbane, a precocious boy and his selectively mute brother embark on a suburban odyssey of love, redemption, and retribution after their family is torn apart by a drug lord.

My thoughts: Tonally, it’s all over the place.  Some parts are dark and tragic while others are silly and farcical.  Weird, and not in a good way.

2.5/5
