October 15, 2022: Wings & Beer Night!
Tonight, Akemi and I are joining some of the neighbors of a beer and wing night. Unlike SOME, we will not be buying our wings from the local Caribbean restaurant or fast food place but will, instead, make three different home versions (from top left clockwise: Gochujuang [Akemi], spicy slated egg yolk [Akemi], honey-lemon thyme [me], sweet Korean heat [me].
Sadly, Suji will be missing out – but we plan to set aside a few wings, just for her.
I also picked up the following interesting(?) beers…
Anybody had any of these? If so, which was your favorite?

Did some writing today on two projects – a pitch deck, and a pilot. Also gave some thought to the horror feature I’m going to co-write with my buddy Ivon. And had a chat with my agent regarding my latest pilot.
Tomorrow is my birthday/our anniversary, so we’ll be celebrating as per tradition – by going out for ramen!

Impetigore (2019)
A woman inherits a house in her ancestral village, but she is unaware that members of the community have been trying to locate her, holding her responsible for a curse that has plagued them for years.
Thoughts: A solid supernatural thriller that gets a little convoluted but is bookmarked by two diabolically disturbing sequences.

Caveat (2020)
A lone drifter suffering from partial memory loss accepts a job to look after a psychologically troubled woman in an abandoned house on an isolated island.
Thoughts: Once you get past the somewhat preposterous set-up, it’s a deliciously diabolical descent into Irish gothic horror.

When his abducted brother returns seemingly a different man with no memory of the past 19 days, Jin-seok chases after the truth behind the kidnapping.
Thoughts: Implausible, incoherent, and nonsensical.

October 13, 2022: Your Handy Guide to Weird Yokai!
If a poor old rice farmer dies, and his indolent child(ren) sell his land for booze money, and the new owner neglects the rice fields, THEN he will rise out of the mud to haunt the area as a Dorotabo – a zombie that will not rest until the land is sold to a more capable owner.
If you’re walking along a riverbank, you may encounter a Shibaten, a bipedal cross between a monkey and a duck, who will challenge you to a wrestling match. Should you agree, you will lose all sense of time and spend the better part of the night being tossed about.
The Enko is a variety of water-dwelling Kappa. Simian in appearance, they mostly frequent rivers at night. Occasionally, if they’re feeling peckish, they may enjoy a human liver by reaching up through an unwary swimmer’s rectum and helping themselves.
On a rainy night, the Ame Onna may appear as a solitary old woman, drenched by the downpour. Under cover of darkness, she will steal newborn baby girls, leaving their despondent mothers to follow in her damp footsteps and become Ame Onna as well. October 11, 2022: Homeward Bound!
Morning stop-over at St.-Viateur Bagel. I picked up a sesame seed and poppy seed mix for Akemi and our neighbor, Kevin (by special request).
Final lunch: sweet cannelloni.
Homeward bound!
Akemi and Suji surprised me at the airport upon my arrival (I believe it was Suji’s idea). I think I may have dislocated my shoulder lugging my bag back home as it was laden with bagels, taralli, biscotti, and TWO laptops – one for net surfing which I did use and one for writing which I did not use as I was unable to focus. Tomorrow, I have three different projects to resume work on. And also a Horror Marathon to resume!

October 8, 2022: A Return to Montreal!
I got up at 6:45 a.m. this morning. To be honest, I was awake even earlier but opted to stay in bed in the hopes I could salvage maybe another hour’s sleep. Alas, it was not to be. Typical for a travel day.
After packing, I took Suji out for her morning constitutional (Last time I was aware, she didn’t poop for three days!), then left the house at 8:00 a.m. with Akemi. I have to say, one of the great things about living in the heart of downtown Toronto is that Billy Bishop Airport is only 15 minutes away on foot. Door to gate, make it 25.
I’d opted for the digital boarding pass which always gives me no end of anxiety as I’ll often worry about accidentally deleting it or my five year old iPhone suddenly dying at check-in – but fortunately, on this occasion, security was a breeze. I arrived 45 minutes early for my flight, so dedicated the time to twitter and stock research.
One hour later, I was on the ground in Montreal – well, Montreal’s West Island’s Dorval Airport where my sister picked me up enroute to mom’s. It’s been over a year since I was last in town.

If there’s one dish I can be guaranteed to be served ever time I visit Montreal, it’s fried peppers.
I like them with bagels. Note – these are actual bagels, not the bland imposter bread rounds sold in Toronto.
And, for dessert – Sis made pistachio cake.
“Oishikatta!”as the Japanese would say.

Everyone settled in for a post-lunch nap. Very Italian of us.

I’ve done very little today, but am exhausted nevertheless (despite that mid-afternoon nap). Going to take it easy tonight with a little smoked duck in a can. Sounds weird but – who knows?

October 6, 2022: A break from horror and yokai!
This weekend I am Montreal-bound to celebrate Thanksgiving with mom and sis! Fly out Saturday morning and back home Tuesday afternoon. What awaits me in La Belle Province? Besides Smoke Meat Pete and Chocolats Favoris.
