Yesterday, after two recent weeks touring in the UK, I set out on a week’s tour of Germany. I flew to Hamburg for my first event, held in the beautiful church of St Katharine. It was a very appropriate place, as the pastor told us - during recent renovations, they uncovered many skeletons beneath the church floor. Fortunately, no unquiet spirits seem to have been among them, and we had a great first reading of Lockwood. I was on stage with Marc Langebeck, my translator and master of ceremonies, and the actress Judith Hoersch, who gave beautiful readings from the book.
Today I took the train to Berlin, and spent the afternoon in the amazing Pergamum Museum, which contains (among other marvels) the rebuilt market gates of Miletus, and Babylon’s Ishtar Gate, which Bartimaeus claims to have helped construct. I inspected his handiwork, and it was surprisingly solid, given that he was also responsible for the walls of Jericho. This evening we had a great reading at the Thalia bookstore, where it was lovely to meet old friends and new fans alike.
