Erfurt
Judith, Marc and I set off from Braunschweig early on Wednesday morning, and took the train East across Germany towards the city of Erfurt, capital of Thuringia. Outside, ruined castles began to appear, perched atop darkly wooded hills. Erfurt itself has a marvellously preserved medieval centre, the highlight of which is the Merchants’ Bridge, one of only two in Europe to have houses built all the way across its span (see photos, above). But the whole place is packed with timberframe houses, pastel-coloured and neatly rendered, vying with each other to be the most quaintly charming.
In the evening we went to the local Gymnasium school, and performed to a packed hall of 200 people. Halfway through the tour now, and each event has been distinctive in its own way: this was the most theatrical, with us spotlit on an impressive stage.
Tomorrow: Wurzburg!
