ROAR!

For the last few weeks, I've given new meaning to the words couch potato. I believe the living room sofa has a permanent imprint of my butt on it. If I wasn't at work, I was in front of the tv, letting the endless shows melt my brain. And I was fine with it. Until it worried me. What was I doing? Normally, I'm a pretty private person. I never let anyone know when something is bothering me. What changed? I'm letting my insecurities eat at me from the inside out. Not Good.

The commute from my j...

Finding Your Glue

Six years ago if you’d asked me who the glue in my family was, I would’ve said my mother.
Five years ago my dad died and I’ve come to discover that he was actually the invisible glue that made us a family.

My dad was older than my mother by nine years and that began to show as they moved into their golden years. Dad was content to stay home, watch TV, feed his birds, and just generally, putz around the house. Mom, on the other hand, was—still is—in constant motion. She’s either golf...<![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]>

The Tree

This tree is down the road from my house, and I see it a couple times a week when I go to town for this or that. This tree has struggled to live in the adobe clay that fills this valley. It is difficult to survive here. Dry, windy, harsh.  This tree has managed to stand for God knows how long against the odds. Every fall it looks like this, sort of Poe-like. Kind of melancholy and sad. Can't you see it's limbs filled with black crows? Like it wants to give up? But I...

What happens when you don't believe?

Today I was reading a book by a long-time favorite author and came upon a scene I didn’t believe. The hero hears something about the heroine’s father. The heroine insists he tell her what was said, even though she knows the comment came from an unfriendly and not necessarily truthful source. Finally, unhappily, he tells her what was said.
Guess who she gets mad at.          ...

Meet Author Stephanie Berget

Hi, Steph: You and your husband both were professional rodeo-ers! You barrel raced and he’s a champion saddlebronc and bareback bronc rider. Love that. Did a little High School rodeoing, but gave it up when I graduated. You’re relatively new to writing. You told me that you read a book where rodeo was featured and the rodeo facts weren’t very good, so you decided to write your own book. I, too, get aggravated by books (and there are so many) with poor research into horses, rodeo, cowboys. Tha...

A rerun...and it's only October!

Yikes! It's mid-Monday and I just realized I hadn't done...anything. When all else fails, I tend to post things I wrote...oh, years ago...in the hope no one will remember having read it before. This one's dated--it is, after all, about seven years old--but I feel pretty much the same way now as I did then. Thanks for reading. Sorry it's not writing-related!          The world, even with all its terrors and horrible events, is a wondrous place.  Humankind’s i...

A break from writing lead to this---

Since I've barely written a word this past week, I'm going off on a rant about overzealous customer service in retail stores these days.

2008 did more than ruin our economy, it put the fear of God--or the non-committed consumer--into the heads of CEO's across the country.

I work for a major retail establishment and I know this quite intimately. We are told to greet customers when they walk in the door, "Welcome to our store."
Store not-to-be-named so I can keep my day job and paycheck. ...
