Free this week!

This is is new for me, and the truth is a part of me is still saying, "What? Free! I worked my computer key fingers to the bone writing this book. I want to make money from it. And we're giving it away? For five days? Five?"
It has been explained to me, over and over, by people who are admittedly brighter bulbs than I am, that this is the thing to do. So, here we are.
Go to Amazon today through March 8, to this link http://www.amazon.com/The-Girls-Tonsil-Lake-Flaherty-ebook/dp/B00HJESTYO a...

Follow the Damn Rules!

No, you're not confused. It is Monday and it's usually Wrangler Liz's day, but we switched because she has something special coming tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

This past week, I entered two contests. One is a three line pitch and the other is a first line contest.
I LOVE first line contests--they REALLY make you see if you have strength in your opening or not.

However, this post is about those who cannot follow the rules!

Three Line Pitch?

You would not believe the # of people who sent in 4, 5...6. ...

MY PHONE--THE ENABLER

I have long maintained that smart phones are making us dumber. Do you know how many people no longer know their own phone numbers because they don’t have to? I work in a retail pharmacy and have actually have had people have to look their phone number up to verify their prescription.

I remember when it was rite of passage that you learned your name, phone number, and address in elementary school. You didn’t make it out kindergarten or first grade without knowing how to answer thos...

When is enough enough?

I was in Savannah, Georgia, in my 20s with a couple of girlfriends, just passing through on our way from Florida to a wedding in North Carolina. We got lost and asked for directions. I was driving and I said, “I don’t care where I have to go, please don’t make me cross that bridge.” The gas station attendant (this was 1974—there was such a thing) told me I wouldn’t have to go anywhere near the bridge, much less cross it.

The Happiest Place On Earth?

In just about a week, RadioMan, bebe and I will be at the Happiest Place on Earth. This has been a really, truly crazy winter and this trip has kept RadioMan and I sane through the hours of snow blowing/shoveling, all the missed days of school, the cold-cold days when we couldn't even leave the house and...well, the list goes on.

And now we're getting ready to leave and checking weather patterns and starting to pack up some summer-ish clothes - because it will be WARM there! - and I just keep...

Good stuff!

A few years ago an in-town crit group ended badly. I won't go into all the seedy details, but one person in particular made it miserable for all of us. He was the husband of one of the writers in the group, and he also wrote.

It was a mixed bag...romance, Christian fiction and a thriller, among others. For awhile, we all became very close and very good friends.

But the truth was, we were just too different and wrote too differently to make it work, or last.

This one man delighted in telling me t...

What do characters look like?

I'm surprised at how little thought I give to what the people in my stories look like. I always include hair color, eye color, and basic build, plus maybe a dimple or a scar or a slight limp so the reader make them look however they want. This is the reason I'm happiest when my books don't have people on their covers, or at least, as in the case of
One More Summer, people but no faces.

Realizing this made me wonder how I could know the people so completely without being able to see them comple...

A blast from the past, and how jaded I've become.

Right now, I'm re-reading The Judas Kiss by Victoria Holt. The book was written when I was fourteen, and I think I read it at age fifteen. I found it in the basement of our house. It became one of my favorite books. I don't know what happened to it, but I found a copy on Amazon. The copy I got looked a lot like the one I had at fifteen. Worn pages, a torn and worn out book cover. I loved holding it in my hands. I immediately started reading. I remembered the plot but I didn't remember the sex...
