The beauty of being ordinary

Make the Ordinary Come Alive
Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is a way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples, and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.William Martin wrote these words. Nu...

Sports Nut? Not so much--

Anyone who knows me knows I love a good movie. I try to make it to at least a movie a week--usually on $5 Tuesday. What you may not know is that the movies I can't not watch are sports movies.
Which is weird because I'm not exactly a sports nut. Sure, I watched most of the Super Bowl this year--because the Seahawks were in it. I am a Washingtonian, after all and I knew everyone would be talking about it everywhere. And I did watch parts of the Blazers playoffs--but mostly because it was...

A Contest

Before I published, I was a contest slut junkie. I loved entering contests. I placed in some and won a few. The rush of that call from the contest coordinator never got old. A few months ago I entered the Authonomy contest and won it. I rarely enter now, but this one looks interesting, although I don't write sweet...

"Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it..."

This is me 46 years ago (yikes, really!) on the day I graduated from high school. Further down the page is my daughter-in-law Tahne, who graduated 26 years ago. She’s with Tierney, her daughter and my granddaughter, who will graduate Sunday.           My heart aches for all of us.           For Tierney because I know no matter what her parents do or no matter how smart and talented and pretty she is, som...

A Tribte to Maya Angelou

This week, the world said goodbye to a literary icon. Maya Angelou. She was an author, a poet, and actress. When she was younger she was a calypso singer. To me, she was pure inspiration. The kind of woman I strive to be. Confident, sophisticated, sassy, and wise. If you're on facebook, you've probably seen lots of statuses containing her quotes. What I remember most is her poem, Still I Rise. I recited it several times in high school and learned it by heart. My oldest daughter did too. And...

Blooming Among The Weeds

This morning I was thinking about what to blog and my mind was blank. Since I did a hodge-podge last week, I didn't want to resort to that.

I looked outside and inspiration sparked. See those white flowers to your left? White Bells?

They're new. I didn't plant them. I've never had them in my garden before. I have plenty of Bluebells, but no white.

What a surprise. Like writing. Ohh--check out that turn of subject.

But, it's true. Haven't you ever been writing when a wildflower takes root in your...

Songs About Rain

It's been a really, really long winter here. Like just about every where north of, oh, Missouri or so. So when the temperature gauge left 60 behind a week ago I rejoiced. Put all the coats and long pants in Rubbermaid storage boxes and sent them up to the attic. BRING ON SUMMER, I say!

But a funny thing happened late last night and early this morning: it started to rain. I think the Earth actually sighed when it started because it's been a soft, gentle rain and not a monsoon. And there's not...

What 4-H Taught Me

I pledge my head to clearer thinking,my heart to greater loyalty,my hands to larger service, andmy health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world.

For sixteen years, I was a proud 4-H leader. My sister and I started a horse club for our five kids. They brought friends, then strangers joined, and before we knew it, we ran one of the biggest clubs in our county.
I loved every moment of 4-H. I couldn't participate when I was a kid. We moved every six-seven months and 4-...
