Under Strain And Peace-Seeking Beings

Kamyelle, the heroine of Under Strain, the second Rebel Cyborgs story (releasing in May), is the last of a long line of peace-seeking humans. Her ancestors came to Rohini 9 in search of a place where they could live in harmony with other beings, with other creatures, with the land.

They found that place…for a while. Rohini 9 hosted predators, velociraptor-like theropods, but the humans learned how to coexist with them with very little conflict…similar to how indigenous people in North America lived with predators like wolves or bear. There was a mutual respect.

Then the Humanoid Alliance arrived on Rohini 9. They brought cyborgs and warships and killing machines with them. And they didn’t want to share the planet…with anyone or anything.

As you can imagine, it didn’t go well for Kamyelle and her kind.

Under Strain

A damaged cyborg warrior is huntedby a peace-loving human female.

Strain is severely malfunctioning.The D Model cyborg was the sole survivor after a horrific decision was made byhis cruel manufacturers. He hates all humans, and when he attacks one who is underhis cyborg leader’s protection, he is reprimanded, stripped of his weapons, andtold to watch and not actively participate in the next mission.

That mission takes place on a smallremote planet. Its lush terrain should only be inhabited by the cyborgs they weresent to rescue, but Strain senses another presence on the surface. She iswatching him, tracking him, hunting him.

A fully operational cyborg would endher lifespan.

Strain wants to claim her. Forever.

Kamyelle is the only one left ofher kind. Warriors have killed the other nonviolent human inhabitants of herplanet. She survived…barely…by hiding in the trees, observing her enemies, and coveringherself with lifeform scan-concealing mud.

When a handsome, gray-skinned,brilliant-blue-eyed male arrives, surrounded by weapon-carrying warriors, she hasto save him. Warriors harm and they kill. That is what they do.

Throwback Thursday – Warlord Sky

Warlord Sky is the first standalone story in the new complete Chamele Barbarian Warlords series. Ironically, it is the only one of two stories that DON’T have a Warlord hero. The hero of Warlord Sky is Qulpa, a Chamele pilot. He has been injured, worries he’ll never fly again.

The one being who could make that happen is Nayan, the head of Ship and Weapons Design. She is brilliant yet doesn’t trust anyone. Nayan deliberately isolates herself from other Chameles.

When the two of them meet, it is explosive. Literally. (grins)

Warlord Sky

No one grounds a barbarian warrior.

Qulpa, a Chamele warrior, lost everyone he loved in the brutal Succession Wars. Flying is the only thing that brings him joy. Serving as his team’s pilot is the sole duty he has left. Then a horrific crash leaves him injured and unable to fly.

The one being who can help him is also his gerel, the female destined to be his. She insists she doesn’t feel their connection. Qulpa is certain his beautiful mate is lying and nothing will stop him from finding out why.

Cyborgs And the Seasons

It is Spring in my corner of the universe. Spring is one of my favorite seasons. Animals are having babies. The snow has melted, creating little streams of running water everywhere. (My home isn’t close to running water normally so this is a treat for me.) Tender shoots of grass and flowers are bursting from the ground. The birds sing happily every morning. It is a wonderful time to be alive.

In the depths of space, there aren’t, of course, any seasons. But on most of the planets the cyborgs and other warriors visit, there ARE seasons. We merely don’t see them change during the duration of a story.

In Holding Hoarse, locals were celebrating the harvest, which implies there’s a Fall/Autumn or Harvest season. Containing Malice was set during a barren, snowless Winter. The rock outcropping sporting the laboratory is stark and unwelcoming. Under Strain, the May release, is set during a rain forest-like Summer. The vegetation is lush. The ground is wet.

Cyborgs are manufactured to adapt to different conditions and they thrive in all seasons. I suspect they would enjoy the Spring here on Earth as much as I do. (smiles)

Malice, a C Model cyborg, has spent his long lifespan enslaved by the Humanoid Alliance. His cruel manufacturers have hurt him in all the ways a male could be hurt.

Extras And Newsletter Snippets

On non-release months (like this month – grins), I often share updates on existing couples (or more) or backstory on upcoming characters (this month, that backstory snippet was about Power, Lethe and Eirene Ours) in my newsletters.

It is fun to revisit with characters and to ‘see’ scenes thatare unlikely to make it into the stories.

Why I Build Worlds

I wrote a post for Dragon’s Book Hoarde about why I tend to build worlds.

“I get attached to people. I’ve known and loved Dragon for well over a decade (we won’t say how many years more – grins). I’ve worked with my cover artist on other projects long before I was a published writer. I consider readers to be part of my book family and I worry when I don’t hear from them.

This is no different for my characters. My characters are their own beings. It is sort of like the characters in our dreams. They might come from our brains but they do their own thing. I care for many of them…greatly. I also want them all to find their romantic happy ever afters…if that is possible (sometimes it isn’t possible).”

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – March 21st

I found this image in stock photo and thought you might enjoy it. The pink water lily represents Truth’s pink-wearing Princess and the gray leaves symbolize Truth, a D Model cyborg with gray skin. It is one of those magical images we find every so often that are exactly right for the story.

I sent my newsletter this week! If you are subscribed and didn’t receive it, reach out to me and I’ll share it with you. It features a bit of Eirene Ours’ childhood and is a heart-warming slice of Ghost, Lethe and her life. They are such a happy little family. I hope reading it will give you joy.

I wrote more chapters in Baring Grudge, the third story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in August). Amanda, my awesome cover designer, has almost finalized the cover for this story. I can’t wait for you to see it! It is man titty delicious! (grins)

I hope to complete the first draft of Baring Grudge this week (knock on wood). That’s my big goal. There will be at least 2 more drafts before I send it to my Awesome Editor (for 3 more rounds of revisions/edits). But I always feel a bit better having the first draft done. As a wonderful editor once told me, she can help a writer fix a messy first draft. She can’t write that first draft.

How Long Should Your Book Series Be?

I shared my thoughts on The Wicked Writing Corner about how many stories a series should have (I’ve figured out the right length for my series but that likely won’t be the right length for every writer or every series.)

Here is a snippet…

“I’m a pantser, a writer who writes by the seat of her pants. Sometimes, I’ll start a series with the intention of it being X stories long and the series becomes X+12 stories long. That happens. I write as many stories as I have to write to give readers a satisfactory end to the series.

But my ideal series length at this moment is five.

That’s because I’m self-published so I know my publisher (me – grins) will give me those five stories to run with. It is because my current favorite marketing strategy is to price the first story in the series, after a few years of being published, at permafree. And it is because, in cyborg romance, I see readership of a series dramatically drop off after five stories.

That might not be your ideal series length.”

Under Strain And Dinosaur Planets

Much of the action in Under Strain, the second Rebel Cyborgs story (releasing in May), occurs on Rohini 9, a dinosaur planet.

You KNOW I couldn’t resist that type of setting for long. I’m proud of myself for waiting this many stories to visit a dinosaur planet. I LOVE dinosaurs, real or fictional. I’ve been on digs. I’m a Jurassic park/world fan. When I was a babysitter, I was a hit with many kids because I could talk dinosaurs with them.

Looking at this setting from a science point of view, there is no reason why there couldn’t be dinosaur planets. If there hadn’t been a triggering event here, Earth might still be a dinosaur planet.

The cyborgs, especially Grudge and Rancor, have an absolute blast with them. And I hope you’ll enjoy this planet also.

Throwback Thursday – Releasing Rage

Releasing Rage was the first cyborg romance I ever wrote.

I wrote it for myself. Two of my favorite cyborg romance writers were taking a break from their series at the same time. I was craving my cyborg romance hit, was bellyaching about it to the Dear Wonderful Hubby. He pointed out that I was a writer. I should write my own cyborg romances.

So I did.

When I finished Releasing Rage, I thought other cyborg romance reading buddies (I SEE you!) might enjoy it also.
