Rainbow Snippets September 27th, 2020

Again, I missed a week…life is tooo crazy! Our three kittens had their spay/neuter surgeries and I was playing nurse mommy to all of them, plus Jack, who already has enough medical issues for his own nurse. Sigh.

As for the story, let’s continue with this first memorable interaction of Erik and Asher.

Here’s my snippet for the week:

What is Rainbow Snippets? It’s a group of LGBT+ authors who post six sentences (or more) from a current WIP, published work or even something they’ve read that they want to rave about. Click on the link below the rainbow to be transported to a place of wonder where you will find tasters of everything from sweet romance, to hot and steamy, to fantasy and sci-fi.

I”m changing gears completely and going to a beloved co-authored work and a series of Upstaged. Written by myself and Cheryl Headford (Nephy to some) in 2012! Over the course of two years we wrote 12 books together! It was the most insane, wonderful time of my writing life! We hope you love the result. The first four books are published and up for sale at Extasy Press and on Amazon. Here is book #1. Upstaged: Opening Act

Blurb:

Wannabe singer and band front man Erik Von Nordgren hates snarky brit Asher Berkley with a passion. From the moment he turns up at practice with his twin sister Daisy, who is one of the band the two have hated each other.
Through a series of ‘tit for tat’ incidents they annoy, frustrate and exasperated each other. The die hard goth with purple eyes and the hard core rocker with dreams of the big time have nothing in common and no need to cross paths. Except to wind each other up.
Until the day that Erik throws Asher in the school pool, when everything begins to change. Erik is so far in closet he’s in Narnia and Asher has a dark past and trust issues that stand in the way of any relationship, let alone one with the brash American who hurts him every time they try to get together.
A relationship doomed from the start, or so you’d think.

“Maybe if you can’t appreciate our music you should get your ass outta here, Dasher. Or is it Ghoulboy?” Erik laughed at his own wit but was disappointed when it didn’t seem to shake this guy one iota.

“Just because my sister wants to hang around with a bunch of losers, doesn’t mean they’re any good, only that she has really bad taste.”

Erik’s temper rose, his blood nearly to the boiling point. “Who the hell are you callin’ a loser, you…you…emo! You gothic, whiny weirdo…freak!” Asher glanced around slowly and then their eyes locked again. “I didn’t hear anyone whine. But I did hear something squeak. Was it you, little mouse? If I closed my eyes I could have imagined I heard a creaky old gate up there on the stage, swinging in the breeze.”

Rainbow Snippets August 30th, 2020

Happy September to everyone! Sorry I missed last week, but Labor Day weekend went much too fast for us. Kitty #1 is having health issues again, so please keep him in your thoughts. Otherwise, work, school, and life have not slowed down, but we do what we can to keep each other sane.

As for the story, let’s continue with this first memorable interaction of Erik and Asher.

Course, you snobby Brits think you’re just too damn good to sit here and listen to us angsty Americans, aren’t ya.” He glanced over his shoulder. “Sorry, Daisy, I didn’t mean you.” Shaking his head, he growled. “What the hell are you even doin’ here?”

“You gonna answer me or what, man?”

Asher held the grinder against the wall and made it whine again. It was beginning to make a groove. Asher shrugged, and Erik badly wanted to wipe the smug, insolent smile off his face.

“Maybe if the band was better I wouldn’t be so bored.” A blond brow went up as Erik crossed his arms tightly across his chest and harrumphed. “You sayin’ something about my band? The one your own sister is in?” He gritted his teeth and inched closer. “Maybe if you can’t appreciate our music you should get your ass outta here, Dasher. Or is it Ghoulboy?” Erik laughed at his own wit but was disappointed when it didn’t seem to shake this guy one iota.

Who else has a tough time believing it’s the end of August? As I was working Friday I kept doing the mid-August files…and had to remind myself no, this is month-end! Crazy.

The kittens are all checked out and good. They are swatting and hissing amongst themselves now and we are just letting them fight it out (to an extent). Policing is exhausting and these are siblings…they just need to be reminded.

As for the story, let’s continue with this first memorable interaction of Erik and Asher.

Erik touched her arm. “What is it, Daisy?” She pointed to the pale kid and made a fist at him. “It’s my brother. He’s playing with your toys.”

She gave Asher a look like no other, one he hoped never to see aimed at him for any reason. But his ire was up. He stared the irritating teen down. Asher met his gaze and once again pressed the button on the angle grinder he held. It let out that same, high-pitched whine as he pushed it against the wall of the garage.

“Dude! What the fuck is wrong with you? Get your paws off my dad’s stuff!” He leapt off the stage and barreled through the crowd, knocking people out of the way to get to the crazy Brit. As soon as he could, he ripped the plug out of the wall, and the machine ground to a halt.

“You fuck! Making a noise like that while I’m singing? That’s just so fucked up, man.And for fuck’s sake, you’ve damaged the wall!

Another hot one here in ye olde Midwest…after a long stretch of lovely weather that would make autumn jealous. Now summer has made her return…she can leave anytime now. I”m not a fan of heat and humidity, or any combo thereof.

Kitties are all good, all four of them. Yup, we have another one, and this is it. My allergies are already making me look like Rocky Balboa after a fight. Oyyyy. Love is all around them though as I’ve gone from zero lap cats to now three.

Tis a lovely sunny (but humid) Sunday here in the Midwest. My elder kitty keep guard at the window whilst the youngins sleep off a morning (and night) of play. Hubby is off saving the world from long grass.

So, this week I was at the physical workplace all day but one…had to get girl kitten her pill for a tapeworm (which she’d spat out in hubby’s face on home attempt) so let the nurses give it a try.

Hello again one and all! So sorry for the absenteeism last week, but I like to burn the candle at both ends these days. Okay, maybe one of those is labeled ‘procrastination’ in big, bold type with flourishes and a candy scent…but that’s just one opinion

Recovering from a particularly stressful weekend…my beloved cat, Jack very nearly died. We snatched him back from the grasp of the grim reaper just in the tick of time, thank goodness! He was in seizure, wobbly, and hissing at both of us (Jack doesn’t hiss). So, two-and-a-half days of vet visits later and rather high bills, three new meds, and a cranky cat, he is home with us again. Thank goodness! He burned up one of those nine lives for sure.

Ironically, it was our new kitten, the girl, who picked up on it. She’d just met him face to face for the first time that night. She puffed herself up and put on a show but when she saw his condition, she simmered down and approached him, touching his nose. Awwww…

Otherwise, my only joys of the weekend have been playing with the kittens, a bit of drumming, and finally some gaming.

Their hook? They were trying to revive grunge.

After taking in his ragtag troupe from the makeshift stage, Erik surveyed the room and checked his reflection in the mirror that hung at the opposite end of the garage. He shuffled his feet, his new combat boots squeaking slightly as he broke them in. As he shifted his tall, muscular body, his ratty black jeans—two sizes too big for his six-foot-three frame—slipped low on his narrow hips. His chain wallet belt added a hindrance when the thick, heavy chain pelted his leg. He cracked his knuckles and flipped his unwashed, messy blond hair over the short sleeves of his tattered red plaid shirt. He puffed air into his hands to exorcise the nerves he’d never admit to having.

Happy Sunday one and all! So sorry I missed last week but it’s been a wild one around here for my hubby and I. We’ve expanded our family by two adorable kittens that take up a lot of time and energy! They are both rescues and just getting them to the house and settled was a major undertaking; not to mention the vet visits, setting up ‘base camp’ and trying to keep Jack’s keen senses dulled to their fluffiness just yet.

It should be no surprise that one of the kittens is a boy and his name is Billy

So, did everyone sleep well after the assaults on our ear drums last night? Ha ha. My neighborhood had plenty of fun with fireworks next door! They were setting them off like mad and wow were they loud! I should’ve hopped on the kit and joined them with a cymbal crash to join them each time!

This week’s post is different for me; it’s time to divulge why I took up the drum kit. First and foremost…I wanted to take up an instrument. Why not? Secondly, and this is author life crosses into her character world…my boy Billy…the drummer. I adore him. Completely. However, I realized I knew nada about music and drums and the whole world of rock music in general or bands…so as a researcher I dove into the learning of his instrument and fell in love with it myself. Art imitates life and inspires the author herself!

Now if only my adoration of Vince could inspire me to cook better….ah well.

The April weather was perfect. A beautiful Saturday afternoon, with white clouds streaked across a pale-blue sky, washed clean by the spring showers of the night before. Erik Von Nordgren paused to take a deep breath, fresh with ozone, before heading toward his parents’ three-car garage. Since the weather had improved, his band had been consigned to the garage on the basis that now they wouldn’t freeze there was no reason for his parents to suffer the falling plaster in the basement when the band could be as loud as they wanted outside.

Erik was proud of his home. The house itself was two stories high and freshly sided. The quiet cul-de-sac made it the ideal location for their practice. That was one thing about living in the St. Louis ‘burbs. There were plenty of spots with woods in the back where only the random squirrel could bother them.
