Lessons From The Superbowl – The Climb #922
There are a number of reasons I’m doing so much at the moment.
Back over (gulp!) 20 years ago when I started Action-Figure, I did not know what I was doing. Back then, I just went for it; sucked up how silly I felt trying to run one of these new-fangled websites and just went for it.
A decade later I would be doing consultancy work for a firm that had spent $6 million on a superbowl ad to advertise their website. I would tell a team of highly skilled engineers ...
What Is Write Productively?
To kick off one of my two new video series that I’m starting, I thought I’d go into the idea and vision behind the series.
My plan is to try and get videos out each weekday for the next two weeks to build up a bit of content before settling back into a more natural cadence of once a week.

Consistently Imperfect – The Climb #921
One of the pieces of self-development I’ve been working on recently is my tendency to plan excessively. For a lot of the things I do this is a really good trait to have. I write quicker and to a higher quality when I have things planned out, either in my own mind or on paper.
But there’s part of me, especially when stepping far outside my comfort zone that wants everything perfect before I action those plans. I’ve been reading a bit about it in my latest piece of se...

Announcing New Writing-Related Projects
As you may have seen across my social media channels over the past 24 hours, I’m launching two new projects; both writing related, both on Youtube.
The first is called Writing Productively and is dedicated to being more efficient as a writer. As just about all writers know, we have good days and bad days when it comes to writing. Some days the words flow, other days it feels like we are wading through treacle. Finding time to write can be difficult as well.
About ten years ago, I made some ...
You Fall To The Level Of Your Systems – The Climb #920
For someone who goes on about productivity so much you’d think I have it all sorted. In truth, I go on about productivity so much because I personally need those tools.
It’s not that I’m particularly lazy without them, I’m just a bit disorganised and sporadic when I try and juggle a large number of projects. I’ve still managed to write and edit close to 400,000 words so far this year.
The problem is that almost everyone sees productivity as a binary. I used to. Yo...

I Should Be Prepping For Next Week, But Instead I Spent It in Minecraft – The Climb #919
I give up.
So I had most things in place for our ultimate Minecraft sorting system, and it was working and looking great. But one of my friends decided overnight that it was too big, and decided to rebuild it somewhere else.
I don’t have the spoons to argue.
Maybe they can do it better and great… but then why get me to waste my day trying to do it? It’s not like mine wasn’t working. Plus it was expandable.
Rather than argue (“this is a game, it’s meant to be fun”...

The Ultimate Minecraft Sorting System – The Climb #918
Taking a bit of a break from Warcraft lately I’ve been playing Minecraft. Whilst I played it back in the day, it was never something I really stuck with. But with anything Blizzard leaving a bad taste in my mouth, it’s made for a welcome little break. I fully intend to become bored with it in due time… but for now, it’s a pretty chill game.
Back in the day, I’d always wanted to do this project where myself and a group of friends each had their own spot in the world,...

I Have Thumbnails Until August Next Year – The Climb #917
One of the activities that goes into the creation of The Climb each day is the construction of a thumbnail image to go with the post.
Visually these are pretty simple. It’s just a picture of me with the logo. It gives the post a bit of visual uniqueness as well as some ‘brand awareness’.
I used to take the picture on the day but back then (in the pre-pandemic times) I was travelling around a lot more. Since Covid hit (and I brought back The Climb) I’ve tried to dev...

Full Steam Ahead – The Climb #916
I have my PC back. Several components and hundred pounds later the desktop is back, installed on my desk and running. I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve missed it.
I thought I might have spent all day playing around with the ray tracing feature on the new graphics card but to be honest I did a lot less of that than I thought.
Instead, I got to work moving The Climb thumbnails to a synced location and then merging the backlog on the PC together with the ones I’...

Getting Back In Action – The Climb #915
I should be getting the desktop back tomorrow, and with it, I can kick some plans into high gear.
I had been planning to launch a couple of YouTube series. I’d done a lot of the prep work, producing intros and the like. That should have allowed me to have a pipeline where I could get the videos out quite quickly.
The problem was that a lot of my video files were on the Desktop and not synced like my writing is.
In many ways, I’ve been really pleased by how easy i...
