Chapter 3

This was amazing!

Jaxx wandered around the tear, staring at the world beyond.

“That is so cool,” he said.

Drummond huffed.

“It’s like looking into a painting, except it’s real,” said Red.

“It looks like trouble,” Marli muttered.

Jaxx rolled his eyes. Everything was always trouble with Marli. Snow arrived a week earlier than expected, trouble. Vegetable harvest was better than usual, trouble. Anything and everyth...

Slowing Down The Pace – The Climb #930

Thursday 9th September 2021

Today was a bit of a burnout day.  I knew today would probably be the most difficult of all these few weeks of promoting video content, the reasoning being that I don’t need to produce a new video tomorrow for Saturday.

I got a lot done but I let several things slide.  I did a video for tomorrow but I know giving myself a bit more time will allow me to script and better film future videos.  After today I change Write Productively down to once a week.  That was alway...

WRITE PRODUCTIVELY – Building A Writing Projects Database In Notion

It’s very easy to just see Notion as just a digital notebook, but it can be so much more for writers.

Over the coming weeks, we’re going to build some really complex and useful tools for writers.

We start with something really simple: a database of all our writing projects. We’ll eventually be linking this into submissions trackers and our word tracker. If you’re new to Notion this is a super simple project to dip your toe into.

Sluggish Heat – The Climb #929

Wednesday 8th September 2021

It was hot today.  And with the heat came hayfever and a general sluggishness that together with being in the middle of this grind, had me wanting to forget it all and just go and do nothing.

The net result was a 3000 word day vs the previous’ 5000 words.

But that’s OK.  Something I’ve learnt over the last year is that the human body is not a computer.  Super-Productivity is not something that can be maintained.

There’s this aspect of productivity that’s been lab...

The First Draft – Chapter Two

Chapter 2

Marli was vaguely aware that she was laying in water. Someone was talking to her. She blinked her eyes open trying to focus.

“Marli, Marli,” Gynea said, coming into view. She was standing over her with a concerned look on her face.

It was dark, the night sky clear. She shivered from the cold and wet.

“What happened?” she said, scratching her aching head. It felt like she had run headlong into a tree.

“The crystal,” Gy...

WRITE PRODUCTIVELY – Setting Up ToDoist For Success

Let me first say that there are a LOT of task management apps out there.  Which one is best depends on your personal taste and how you like to work.  Let me also add, that there are equally as many ways by which to organise your tasks.  Again, they are all equally valid and you need to find one that suits you and the way you work.

However, the concept of a task management system more advanced than a todo list scribbled on a scraps of paper is new to most writers and I’ve had a few ask if I could...

Is The End Near? – The Climb #928

Tuesday 7th September 2021

Today I published two videos,  livestreamed for two and a half hours and still managed to write 5000 words across four projects.

And yes, I realise I can’t keep this up forever.  But I only plan to do dailies of Write Productively until the end of this week and The Final Draft the week after.  Then it’s down to a weekly cadence.

And after that… I’m going to play video games for an entire day without a single shred of doubt.

But I may have more time soon.  The Accur...

The First Draft – Chapter One

There were worse jobs than digging around in the bog, but at the moment, Redajinn couldn’t think of any. He was up to his knees in water and the sludge he was pulling up stank to high heaven.

“What is this stuff?” Jaxx asked. He was shorter than Redajinn and as such was water reached to his waist. He pulled up a sheet of metal with what looked like a load of wires attached. He handed it to Gynea who stood on more solid ground above, where she added it to the growing pile.

The moors were cold tod...

WRITE PRODUCTIVELY – What Is Notion? (And Why Writers Should Use It)

Swapping over to a digital notebook can be a scary transition for a writer.

But just as the typewriter was replaced by the word processor, so the humble notebook is replaced with apps we can access from our phones and computers.

After years of never really getting the point of Evernote, the move to Notion a few years ago with all it’s database features was a real Eureka moment. No longer did I have a digital Notebook, I had an entire writing productivity system.

In this video I go through the fe...

Two Scenes Ahead – The Climb #927

Monday 6th September 2021

I have to be honest and say that despite it being the start of another incredibly busy week, I had fun today.  I managed to get a 40 minute video out, conduct a 2 hour livestream on character and still get 4000 words written.

Prompted by The First Draft, I’ve introduced a little productivity hack for myself.

I hate going into a writing session not knowing what I need to write.  Often, I’ll have a clear plan for the next 2 or 3 scenes, have a good day and then find my...
