State of the TAM: 17th August
My anxiety levels! That’s what! I just realized that I have only two months to pull my GRL stuff together! I think I’ve got most of it, but the eternal worry is that I forget something.
Although I’m going to Virginia. As long as I have my banners and swag, I can get pretty much everything else in a Walmart if it comes to that!
Footwork will be out on the 10th September!

And Sting in the Tail is out Oct 4th!

I am also going away in a campervan for a couple of days in September! My pups are vaccinated, wormed, and passported so they’re coming too! We’re going to head TOWARD Connemara and see what happens :D This is not a picture of my camper, but I am hoping for this vibe!

If a megalomaniacal earth mage kidnaps your little sister, do you:
A) Kill him
B) Kill him
C) Kill him
D) Magically indenture yourself to him to ensure her safe return
Welsh water horse Nevan Quirke would have happily opted for A, B, or C, but had no idea where his sister was hidden—so, option D it is. He’s not a fool, though. He made sure to limit his obligation to a single task.
Unfortunately, he neglected to nail down a few tiny details before the geas brand was seared into his skin, and now:
A) He can’t shift
B) He can’t swim
C) He can’t drink
D) If he fails, he’ll be bound to the mage for eternity
Oh, and that task? Assist in an assassination.
If only he weren’t so thirsty.
And if only his partner for the heinous job weren’t the most appealing man Nevan has seen in his entire two-thousand-year life.
Assassin by Accident takes place in E.J. Russell’s Mythmatched universe and is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special. This book features grumpy/sunshiny, hurt/comfort, mistaken identity, opposites attract, unexpected derring-do, and of course an HEA—no matter how little the men in question think they deserve it.

Pupdate of the Week
The Carnival of Mysteries just arrived in Sutton County. They say if you cross the fortune teller’s palm with silver she can read your future like a map. Right now all Ledger Conroy wants to know is if he has a future.
Back in Sutton after over a decade, Ledger’s plan had been to bury his father--recently deceased convicted serial killer and less-well known warlock, Bell Conroy--clear the property, and then finally wash his hands of being a Conroy. Instead there’s a cured human heart in the larder, a pissed off pretty boy who is definitely not human at the door, and a debt to the devil that Ledger’s just inherited.
Devil. Monster. Something like that. He’d not asked for its pedigree
Whatever it was, it's given Ledger a week to fulfill the terms of his father’s contract. Or else he’s never going to leave Sutton again. With pretty-boy Wren at his heels, more to make sure Ledger doesn’t skip town than to provide assistance, Ledger tries to track his father’s sins across Sutton. The problem is there’s so many of them.
Ledger is faced with old grudges, a Sheriff that thinks Ledger knows more about his father’s crimes than he’s ever said (and isn’t wrong), and a dead man with a book shop. Not to mention the on-going distraction of Wren, who can't decide whether to be a hindrance, a help, or just hot.
Luckily Ledger has a nose for this sort of work.
Sting in the Tail is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries Series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame's Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it's on, so each visit is unique and special. This book contains a dealer in dark collectibles, a man who's NOT people, and a monster with a debt it expects to be paid.

Tired bean and tree bean! *lol*

Must Read of the WeekSomeone once said, "Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company." Gabe Rossi didn't believe in either and figured it would be a long time until he had to deal with finding out if he was right. Instead, he's dragged off a balcony the day after an unnerving meeting with a fortune teller and into a postmortem reality he never would have expected.
Now Gabe is in Hell, which ends up being full of some really nice people who have necessary (if unpleasant) jobs. He's been promised a transfer to Heaven, but in the meantime Gabe will have to deal with a psychotic ex who's turned out to be a former despotic ruler of Ancient Rome, an aged-down grandmother who keeps causing chaos, corporate politics, a pet hellhound, a lot of unanswered questions about his own existence, and a growing attachment to the guy in charge of the place. What's a dead college student to do, aside from enjoy the company?
Go for the Company is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries Series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special. This book contains slow-burn paranormal romance, asexual representation, and a guaranteed Happily Ever Afterlife.
As someone who chronically overpacks (except for knickers) I opened this article with an open heart and opener mind. Only to immediately slam both shut at the mention of doing holiday laundry.
Thank you, but no. My existing practice of just hauling a case of wrinkled, sweaty clothes home with me is quite acceptable.
I said, thank you! And good day!

How cute is this?Phoenix sacrificed everything to become one of the greatest necromancers in nightwalker history—including his beauty, though that was by accident rather than design. As beauty is everything to vampires, he has been a pariah ever since, disowned, discarded, and largely forgotten by everyone he once called family and friend.
Nowadays, he lends his skills to sorcerer Jackie Black and the notorious Clan Mordred. If he still feels lonely and isolated, and rejected by the man he'd been stupid enough to think returned his interest, that's his own problem, no one else's. He's used to rejection anyway.
Then his brother shows up on his doorstep begging for help with a blackmail problem—and offering the one thing Phoenix cannot refuse as payment. But if there's one thing he's learned about nightwalkers, it's that nothing is ever as it seems, and problems always get worse before they get better…

Kinda makes you think of Good Omens, huh?
Why Insect Memories May Not Survive MetamorphosisThe reshuffling of neurons during fruit fly metamorphosis suggests that larval memories don’t persist in adults.
On warm summer nights, green lacewings flutter around bright lanterns in backyards and at campsites. The insects, with their veil-like wings, are easily distracted from their natural preoccupation with sipping on flower nectar, avoiding predatory bats and reproducing. Small clutches of the eggs they lay hang from long stalks on the underside of leaves and sway like fairy lights in the wind.
The dangling ensembles of eggs are beautiful but also practical: They keep the hatching larvae from immediately eating their unhatched siblings. With sickle-like jaws that pierce their prey and suck them dry, lacewing larvae are “vicious,” said James Truman, a professor emeritus of development, cell and molecular biology at the University of Washington. “It’s like ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in one animal.”
I will be artist yet!

Bode Harlan has never claimed to be a good guy, but he’s trying to keep his nose clean and his head down these days.
After a year in prison for assault--and to be fair, he did it--he isn’t looking to go back. Admittedly, his pretty face being the star attraction in an illegal underground fighting ring seems to run counter to that goal, but he’s gotta pay the bills and there ain’t much else he’s good.
And it keeps his parole officer off his back…since she runs the place.
Then his mom skips town and her boyfriend kicks Bode’s 14 year old brother out on the street. Bode grow up in and out of foster care, he doesn’t want that for Danny. It’s not like he can take the kid in, though. He’s an ex-con who gets beat up twice a month for money. That’s how he ends up on his good-natured ex-boyfriend’s doorstep. Sonny is a soft touch. At least he always was for Bode. All he wants is somewhere to crash for a couple of nights, nothing more. Sonny’s got his life together now--a home, a boyfriend, even a dog--and it would take a real asshole to want to blow that up.
…of course, Bode’s never said he wasn’t an asshole.

Must Read of the WeekAlan
I haven't been out with a guy in the last two years. Partly because I'm a gay elementary-school teacher in a fairly small, conservative town. Partly because I'm a sorcerer, and dating ordinary humans only leads to trouble. Sleeping with one though? That's doable, so when my birdbrained familiar Sunny lines up a tall, muscular firefighter for me, I'm not going to say no. Just once, though. Maybe twice. I don't need more trouble in my life.
Jason
I don't regret moving back to my hometown and my big family. Well, not much. I'm not out to them, and I miss the anonymity of the big city, but I like the local fire house and the slower-paced life. Still, when I see my niece's teacher, Mr. Hiranchai, in gray sweatpants talking to a mini-parrot on his shoulder, something inside me (or maybe something in front of me) perks up and says "I want that one." I can't have an actual boyfriend, but I sure wouldn't mind getting laid, and Alan's slim, dark-haired, smart-assed style rings all my bells.
It's no surprise we turn out to be great together, even if my job and his responsibilities make it hard to find time. It is a surprise when I realize I want more than just an occasional night. But some weird fires out in the brush keep us firefighters hopping, and when this strange carnival comes to town and lands me with a pair of magical doll shoes, life gets truly confusing. There's more to Alan than he's telling me, and I'm getting a bad, bad feeling about all this.
Magic Burning is a story in the Necromancer universe, 60 years after Marked by Death, and is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries Series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special. This book contains a snarky, matchmaking bird, a lonely young teacher, and a gay firefighter finally coming out to his large family.
This is fascinating. I never really thought that there WAS any point to the weird boxy ads at the bottom of articles/headlines. I thought they were just pre-generated, or grabbed by people with no desire to do a good job.
Turns out they have a point AND a name. Who knew?
The chumbox is still the dirty design secret of the internet
My breaking point came when I saw the headline for the 50th or so time: “Diabetes Is Not From Sweets! Meet the Main Enemy of Diabetes.” Only this time, instead of the usual imagery that ran below it—alien-looking insects, what appears to be a trio of eels, a bowl filled with (*scream*) raw testicles—there was a pile of porous objects. I squinted. And there, in the tiny square ad, was something that made even less sense: a pile of otherwise delicious (and highly sought after) morel mushrooms.
I cracked. I clicked. And once I arrived at the outbound link—a primitive Web 1.0-esque landing page simply titled “US News”—the morel mushrooms were nowhere to be found. (Nor were any eels or much in the way of explaining the promised “main enemy of diabetes.”) Instead, I found myself a cog in a much bigger machine; one that has transformed the end of so many online articles into a grid of ambiguous horror.
This looks so good.

I’m trying to get all my GRL ducks in a row this week. So far I keep adding things TO my to-do list and not ticking anything off. But I’ll get there. Not like I have a choice. Things must be done, then I can use my sexy new Irish passport for the first time.
First thing on my list for when I GET to GRL is to taunt C.S. Poe with said passport.
So I should be getting a pre-order up this month and another one next month! I haven’t decided whether to do the cover reveal on TikTok (the algorithms confuse me!) or on here. My Tiktok audience is mostly people that like my doggos, so it’s just for the fancy video element.

Pupdate of the WeekJason Richards is ridiculously in love with his friend and coworker, Ahmed Kazimi. Unfortunately, Ahmed is a package deal—he has a boyfriend who, as far as Jason is concerned, needs to be launched into the sun.
Then a mysterious carnival rolls into town, and Jason and Ahmed can’t resist going. Not even if Ahmed’s boyfriend can be depended on to make everybody miserable.
When Ahmed wins a strange prize from an even stranger carnival game, weird things start happening. First, a mishap with a friend’s newly purchased love potion. Then a cascade of steadily worsening bad luck starts to rain down on every corner of Ahmed’s life. Though he doesn’t believe in the paranormal, he can’t help but wonder if his prize is cursed. Just to be safe, he throws it away.
But it comes back. And it keeps coming back.
Upon learning about the prize that won’t go away, Jason suggests the only solution he can think of: return it to the place it came from.
Now Ahmed and Jason are on a mission to get rid of the cursed prize… assuming they can find that game again.

I am always fascinated by articles like these. The thing is that smart (and greedy, greedy is always a cruising for a bruising) people are ACTUALLY more likely to fall for scams like these than other people. Same like cults. They want to believe they’re too smart to fall for something like this, and disregard entirely that it all emotionally based.
Oh, like, did you know that there is a VERY EASY way to stop children and dogs being accidentally left in cars to die from heatstroke? But the people who make cars don’t want to institute it because until it happens to you, most people are offended by the suggestion they would be evil or careless. DISREGARDING completely the fact it’s nothing to do with that most of the time, it’s just how are brains are wired.
That said I’ve always thought I’d be a poor target for a cult, because people being too nice to me makes me suspicious, I cut my teeth on ‘no one gives you anything in this world!’, and I’m cheap and lazy. Also don’t insult my grandmother, because fuck you scientology! (Also that man wrote some bad books that were NOT healthy).
How scammers use psychology to create some of the most convincing internet cons – and what to watch out forPublished: June 21, 2023 4.19pm BST

Online fraud is today’s most common crime. Victims are often told they are foolish for falling for it, but fraudsters use psychological mechanisms to infiltrate the defences of their targets, regardless of how intelligent they are.
So it’s important to keep up with the latest scams and understand how they work.
Recently, consumer protection magazine Which? identified some of the most convincing scams of 2023. These scams all have one thing in common – they insidiously take advantage of people’s cognitive biases and psychological blind spots.
I’m gonna admit, this is always who I fancast as Nicholas Blake from the Wolf Winter books. :D Speaking of which…had I mentioned that Stone the Crows is being recorded right about now? :D

Look, it’s my birthday! So everyone has to be nice to me. Even though I have TOTALLY dropped the ball on my newsletter this year. But! Birthday! So trying to start as I mean to go on!

Basically, just a lot of different stresses and the guy doing my kitchen ghosted me, blocked my calls, and went bankrupt. But that’s ALMOST all done and dusted now. I have countertops on everything, all the doors (cupboards and to rooms) close again, and my washing machine doesn’t leak anymore! It’s all coming up Tam!

Anyhow, I’m going to be a bit scattered until I get back into the swing of things. To start the ball rolling though!

You can’t fly away from destiny.
Crow Rapp assumes he’ll spend his life growing corn in rural Illinois, like the grandparents who raised him. But during a visit to a traveling carnival, he encounters a handsome stranger named Simeon Bell—and receives a prophecy of a horrifying future. When that future materializes soon afterward, Crow flees… only to find that no matter how far he goes, fate pursues him.
Simeon reenters his life a decade later and causes Crow to consider whether actively fighting his fate might be better than constant attempts at escape. In a world tinged by magic, where myths are as real as the sky above them, the men try to determine Crow’s true identity. Along the way, they test the powers of friendship and love and explore the boundaries of free will—ultimately discovering whether the force of destiny can be overcome.
Crow’s Fate is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries Series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special. This book contains an Illinois farmboy, a roustabout from London, and realizations about the power of love.
So cool! Check it out and keep an eye out for some other COOL AS ANYTHING books coming in this series!

The Secrets of Real-Life Wedding CrashersExperts claim wedding crashing isn’t as popular as the movie makes it seem, but maybe that’s because the good ones never get caught.

When 36-year-old writer Orly Minazad told her white American friend that she and her fiancé crashed at least 10 weddings in one summer to gather intel and inspiration for their upcoming nuptials, it took a good minute or two to peel her friend’s jaw off the floor. “She couldn’t believe that I’d gone to all these people’s weddings uninvited,” she says. “And I couldn’t believe she hadn’t!”Right, I’m off to have birthday pavlova :D Next Tuesday I will endeavor to produce a more coherant collection of things for you!

Captain Zaveid L’eau offers Damon a place to recover and space to find himself once more. The attractive captain distracts him from his troubles and it’s enough. Damon can see the light at the end of the tunnel and Zaveid is the one lighting the way.
But with a volcano on the brink of exploding, Damon doesn’t have time for peace.
The pirates are breathing down their necks and a massive eruption destroying everything, Damon has to learn to trust Zaveid with his heart and that no matter the circumstances, love will give them the strength to defeat all enemies, including their own self-doubt.
Calamity is the 4th book of the StarStation series, featuring amnesiac heroes, long-suffering captains and a race against time. Because of the unique circumstances of this book, one does not need to read the previous books but it’s better anyway to get the whole picture.

State of the TAM - 28th March
Not me, I’ve been at sea level all week. From Murlough Bay up to Glenariff…that has the most awesome walk along the coastline. I did get my ticket to GRL though! Despite me getting my times confused and only realizing at 3:30 that I needed to get my butt and my credit card to a laptop!
HOWEVER! Holly Oliver has been up to loads this week, with the launch of her brand new novel, Scars of the Soul. It is out today, so go and check it out! It has cats and pyschics and crime, so can’t go wrong there!
So, I am doing a wee interview and sharing an exerpt from Holly’s novel today! However, I know you guys would miss…

Scars of the Soul is a standalone story set in the same world as Shadows of the Soul. While you might meet old friends, reading the earlier book is unnecessary to enjoy this story.
Neo grapples with his psychic abilities and has been drifting in a sea of chaos for as long as he can remember. Studying toward his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, he’s tried to move on with his life. However, he still finds part of himself stuck on an unsolved case from a decade ago, lost in memories and hounded by the ghosts of his past. When a young woman appears in his vision, he can’t shake the feeling that she’s important.
But can he find someone who believes him?
Jackson, a lynx shifter and detective on the Paranormal squad, is begrudgingly still on leave from work after his accident a few months ago. To pass the time, he throws himself into a case that has plagued him for a decade, the one that got away. When an unwelcome blast from the past might hold the key to moving the case forward, Jackson is forced to take the gamble of his life to see if this ‘psychic’ is the real deal.
Jackson’s firm bet is on NOT!
When they meet for the first time, Jackson and Neo are more surprised than anyone to find out the Fates have deemed them a match. This must be a joke, surely.
Can these two scarred souls find peace?
Come along for the ride as they hunt for the elusive Desert Rose Killer and see if they can get their HEA despite how much they think they hate each other.
Trigger warnings: This story contains an on-page depiction of a suicide and descriptions of murder scenes.
Aside from that, this is a love story intended for adults. Coarse language, some violence, and intimate situations between two consenting adults will be found between these pages.
Enjoy!

Bio
Hi, I'm Holly, and I live in a small beach town in New Zealand. I juggle many hats, mum, wife, nurse, educator, and author, but in truth, I love nothing more than to curl up with a good book and escape the washing pile (that never ends). Aside from books, I also love coffee, yoga, and houseplants.
I write sweet and sometimes sassy or suspenseful stories about sexy men who really don’t look well-suited on the surface but throw fate into the mix, and things get interesting. Sometimes with a touch of magic or a dash of mystery; I'm not confined to a set genre. I want to write them all!
Stay tuned to see what I get up to next.

1: What is the first thing you TRIED to write (mine was a story about an orphaned pig adopted by ballerinas)
From memory, my Mum would have to correct me if I’m wrong, but I wrote Fairy Alphabet books from A-Z with names, descriptions, and stories. I’ve always been fascinated by magic. But my first full story was about a witch with no friends who finds a frog, LOL.
2: What part of this book tickled you so much you giggled to yourself?
There’s a scene where Jackson and Neo need to ‘reconnect’, and they end up trying to have fun times in the car. It’s awkward and messy and made me giggle as I wrote it and every time I ran through to edit.
The other would be the banter between Jackson and Max when Jackson bolts from Neo’s house the first time they meet.
3: Did you lose any part of the book in edit that you really wanted to keep?
I cut a flashback scene which I loved, where Jackson and Randall (a secondary character) were arguing about the proper way to make a coffee--I’m a huge coffee buff--It was sweet and funny but sadly added nothing to the plot.
4: What is your favorite 'nothing is working right and I'm sulking' comfort food?
When I need comfort food, my go-to is a chicken and cheeseburger from the fish and chip shop down the road from me. And I have a plentiful supply of KitKats in the drawer next to my bed 😊
5: Tell us something about you and your characters that we don't know?
Something about me? I lived in a house bus for a year with my hubby, cat, and four kids. I’m obsessed with stationery and have way more notebooks than is healthy, LOL.
Jackson: Eats an unhealthy amount of candy.
Neo: is allergic to avocado.
6: What is the most unhelpful way you would describe this book to someone?
Neo: I have visions.
Jackson: What a crock of shit.
Fate: Haha, let the fun begin.

Jackson slumped onto his ass, perching himself on the sidewalk edge and looking into space. Max must have decided to give him a minute, but the relentless onslaught from his lynx sounded like it was just getting started.
Finally, Max sat beside him, banging their knees together to get Jackson’s attention.
“Jacks, how long have we been friends?”
Jackson snapped his head up to look at Max. “What’s that got to do with anything?” Jackson snapped.
“I’m hoping if I can remind you how much I care about you, it might help you hear me a bit better.”
“I’m listening.”
“He’s your mate.”
It wasn’t a question, but Jackson answered him as if it was, with a clipped, “Yep, but it has to be a mistake.”
“Oh, yeah. Since when did the Fates make mistakes?”
Jackson sighed. “It has to be a mistake…”
“And if it’s not?”
“It is. I’m sure of it.” But, despite saying the words with genuine conviction, Jackson knew it was all utter bullshit. He was screwed! The Fates were fucking with him, and his lynx hated him. And the cherry on top? Neo Jordan Parker was a psychic and his mate. So what if Jackson had done his homework on the guy before agreeing to meet up, he’d been curious and bored. And so what if he was the best-smelling and most attractive man Jackson had ever seen. And did it really make any difference that Jackson’s cock was still rock hard just at the mere sight of the man? Nope, not to Jackson. It didn't matter a damn!
Max sat silently beside him, their knees still knocking against one another as Jackson fumed and tried to block out his lynx’s tyrannical rantings.
“So just let me get this straight. He’s definitely your mate?”
“Yep.”
“You don’t think that’s true?”
“Can’t be true.”
“And you’re going to what? Sit down here until he and Darius finish the profile? How do you expect them to do that without you?”
“If I go back up there, I’m gonna end up doing something that both Neo and I will live to regret.”
“You mean you’ll tear his clothes off and mark him as yours for all eternity.”
Jackson threw him a dirty look.
“But you’re not mates…” Max teased.
“Oh, fuck off, will you!”
