I am always intrigued by haunted house stories. Not just because they give me chills, nor because I’m a writing. Mostly because my cowardly, Irish ass would have collected my shit and been out of there after the first thing went bump in the night. I’m sporadically wary of my OWN GARDEN because the field out back is dark and sometimes there are people in it when I don’t expect them.
Nope. I am too Irish for that stuff. You DO NOT mess around with the fey folk or the dead. I mean, obviously not because you BELIEVE in that sort of thing. You just don’t.
These folks definitely have more fortitude than I do!

Brooke and I were on vacation when we noticed the headaches had gone. We had moved into the house in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, only three weeks before, and knew it was time to leave. It had mold, and was making us sick. One bright summer day, we packed two bags, a guitar and the cat into our car and realized we had no place to sleep. We accepted a friend’s offer to crash in nearby Hillsborough, and started looking for a new rental.
The historic house we saw in the ad was big and strangely cheap. The website featured only a couple of out-of-focus pictures, so we walked over to the property and were shocked: It was an enormous place, wonderfully situated. She had five fireplaces and wide wood floorboards, which ran in waves across the ancient rooms. The land was spacious, rolling pasture and old, spreading hardwoods. The Eno River ran placidly only a hundred yards to the south, part of its 40-mile meander from its source to its convergence with the Neuse — indeed, the house sat snug inside the tenderloin of land, bound on three sides by the river’s horseshoe. We could walk to Hillsborough’s modest downtown, but felt as if we were in the country. The night sky was dark and thick with stars.
I mean, she was pretty scary when you think about it. Like Peter Pan.

A Wolf Winter Novel
The world ends not with a bang, but with a downpour. Tornadoes spin through the heart of London, New York cooks in a heat wave that melts tarmac, and Russia freezes under an ever-thickening layer of permafrost. People rally at first—organizing aid drops and evacuating populations—but the weather is only getting worse.
In Durham, mild-mannered academic Danny Fennick has battened down to sit out the storm. He grew up in the Scottish Highlands, so he’s seen harsh winters before. Besides, he has an advantage. He’s a werewolf. Or, to be precise, a weredog. Less impressive, but still useful.
Except the other werewolves don’t believe this is any ordinary winter, and they’re coming down over the Wall to mark their new territory. Including Danny’s ex, Jack—the Crown Prince Pup of the Numitor’s pack—and the prince’s brother, who wants to kill him.
A wolf winter isn’t white. It’s red as blood.

Wayward Wolves: Book One
Gibson Keller’s days are fairly routine: wake up early, get some work done, drink lots of coffee, and take care of Ellis, his older brother, stuck in wolf form after coming home from the war. It’s a simple life made up of long runs on two legs—or four—and quiet evenings…. Until Ellis chases a handsome man off a cliff and into the frozen waters beside their cabin, changing Gibson’s life forever.
For Zach Thomas, buying an old B&B is a new start. Leaving behind his city life, he longs to find peace and quiet, and hiking the trails behind his property seems safe enough—right up to the moment an enormous black wolf chases him into a lake, nearly drowning him. Discovering werewolves are real astounds him, but not as much as the man who rescues him from the icy water, then walks into Zach’s heart as if he owns it.
Loving a werewolf—loving Gibson with all his secrets—has its challenges, but Zach believes their love is worth fighting for, especially since his heart knows the big bad wolf is really a prince in disguise.

A Camp H.O.W.L. Novel
Moonmates exist, but getting together is going to be a beast….
When Adrian Rothschild skipped his “werewolf puberty,” he assumed he was, somehow, human. But he was wrong, and he’s about to go through his Turn with a country between him and his Pack—scared, alone, and eight years late.
Dr. Tate Lewis’s werewolf supremacist father made his Turn miserable, and now Tate works for Camp H.O.W.L. to ease the transition for young werewolves. He isn’t expecting to offer guidance to a grown man—or find his moonmate in Adrian. Tate doesn’t even believe in the legendary bond; after all, his polygamist father claimed five. But it’s clear Adrian needs him, and if Tate can let his guard down, he might discover he needs Adrian too.
A moonmate is a wolf’s missing piece, and Tate is missing a lot of pieces. But is Adrian up to the challenge?

Bones: Book One
Skinny, quiet hipster Dylan Warner was the kind of guy other men barely glanced at until an evening’s indiscretion with a handsome stranger turned him into a werewolf. Now, despite a slightly hairy handicap, he just wants to live an ordinary—if lonely—life as an architect. He tries to keep his wild impulses in check, but after one too many close calls, Dylan gives up his urban life and moves to the country, where he will be less likely to harm someone else. His new home is a dilapidated but promising house that comes with a former Christmas tree farm and a solitary neighbor: sexy, rustic Chris Nock.
Dylan hires Chris to help him renovate the farmhouse and quickly discovers his assumptions about his neighbor are inaccurate—and that he’d very much like Chris to become a permanent fixture in his life as well as his home. Between proving himself to his boss, coping with the seductive lure of his dangerous ex-lover, and his limited romantic experience, Dylan finds it hard enough to express himself—how can he bring up his monthly urge to howl at the moon?

GRL is in TEN DAYS!
Status of prep?
Clothes: packed!
Swag: mostly packed!
Books: on their way or at the site, out of my hands!
Mental state: not ready!
Costume: sorted!
Pre-orders: Still didn’t get my butt in gear to sort those out, so I don’t have to worry.
I feel CONFIDENT that I’ve forgotten something, but I can’t think what. It’s NOT my driver’s license, because I still haven’t officially got that back from the government yet. I guess I’ll find out in Virginia!
I’ll definitely skip a full newsletter while at GRL, but I’ll try and fire off a short one on the Wednesday before the narrator’s panel :D
In other news I’m waiting for Virgin to upgrade my internet like they PROMISED. Currently it seems to have actually gone shittier. I guess it’ll be back to BT for me if Virgin doesn’t pull their finger out.
Pupdate of the WeekIzzy has gone into heat for the first time. She feels very sorry for herself at the moment, so she’s cuddling with her brother a lot. My nerves are wrecked. A dog so much looks at her and I’m like one of those over-protective Dad’s from a country song.

Look at these two hallions! It was piddling down, and they refused to go into the back yard to pee without their jackets this morning. Yet an hour and a half walk (it wasn’t a hike, I exaggerated) through the woods was dandy.
Also I really need my hair dyed! At UK Meet I used this shampoo and conditioner bar thing, and it did HARM to my hair and stripped all the colour. However, I’m lazy and won’t put a colour in until it’s nearly GRL time :D

Look. I am not convinced Liz Truss has a clue about Stormont, and I am convinced that she doesn’t actually care that much. I mean, to date she’s pretty much been ALL IN on just hating anyone who isn’t proper wealthy and tanked both the economy and her government within a month (COUNTING the shut-down when the Queen died!). So not looking forward to her trying to sort this out.
Prime Minister Lis Truss says 'no reason' why Stormont should not be re-establishedNorthern Ireland's powersharing institutions have been dormant for months due to a DUP protest against the protocol

I would eat these. I’m just saying.

The new Sam Smith song is good….
The problem is that TikTok kicked ass on churning out cover versions that were just awesome. So, the original song isn’t even the ear worm I get anymore! This one is good.

GRL is not long now! I’ll be getting ready to take the bus down to Dublin on the 14th….and then a plane on the 15th. Don’t worry, I’ve not gotten confused.
I think I have most stuff ready for it. Well, actually I don’t. I think I’ve forgotten something absolutely vital, but I can’t put my finger on what that might be. So HOPEFULLY that’s just my neuroses talking.

This is going to be another short-form newsletter this week. Sorry, guys. I hate to be unpredictable, but Izzy has gone into heat (so there’s a lot of washing machine action going on and early EARLY morning walks) and tonight she was sick. So she had to run down to the vets and is clinging to me right now.
So brace yourself. This will be short and sweet!

Yes. I know. But bear in mind - Monday was an unexpected bank holiday and it has COMPLETELY thrown off my understanding of the passage of time.
I had to go up to Belfast last week. Since parking is notoriously bad at the venue I decided to take the train. That was an experience I’d give a lot to avoid again. I know that public transport is great and all, but it turns out I get trainsick now. Plus it’s anxiety making trying to keep track of that little bit of paper!

AND SOMEONE PUSHED ME OFF A TRAIN once*. I get to dislike them.
*it wasn’t going fast. It had just started to pull away from the station, I realised I’d missed my stop, and as I dithered in front of the slow to close doors a woman went, ‘Just jump! You can do it!’ and gave me a shove. I landed on both feet, thought for a second I was alright, and then just went down and sorta rolled along until I hit a wall. Then I jumped back up, announced I was fine! And strode off. Only my pride, my knees, and my ankles were hurt.

Pupdate of the WeekA bit of tongue for you all :D

Go to Romance Bookworms and check out this list of awesome free romance books for Stuff Your Kindle day.

Get the books at your preferred ebook retailer, for FREE, no strings attached. This list is for the Amazon store (and some links may re-direct to a geo-specific location, others may link to Amazon.com, that’s the author’s choice. If you live outside the US and want to learn how to navigate from the US store to your preferred local Amazon store, we have a blog post about that here.)
PLEASE CHECK ALL PRICES BEFORE YOU ONE-CLICK! Many of Amazon’s free offerings depend on a bot-driven price-matching system, and the prices sometimes revert to their “regular price”. If a book is not free, put it on your wish list, and Amazon will notify you when the price drops again.
FINALLY! Anyone going to GRL? Come and hang out with me and Bru Baker. We’re delightful! ….well, I know I am! :D
(*I jest, I jest. Bru’s probably nicer than me.)

This is a really cool idea.

So after a whole year (or god, nearly three!) of planning the UK Meet is over. It is always weird to remember that it takes place over a weekend. Leading up to/during it seems much longer, then you surface on Monday and…well, that’s it until…
Actually we don’t know this time. The UK Meet committee all resigned after this year’s meet, so future plans are in limbo until a new committee is appointed or the Meet is disbanded. I hope they find a new committee! It would be a shame to lose the Meet.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. How about a TV crew?
Single dad Aiden is in a bind. His childminder can't have the kids for the holidays, and there is no one else to take them. He has no family to help, his ex is a deadbeat, and holiday club is full. He's running out of options, or the options are running from his twin terrors. He's not sure which.
Can a trashy reality TV show save his bacon? It's his worst nightmare, but it could also solve his problems.
Carter, manny and reality star for hit TV show Manny SOS, can't complain about his life. He has a teenage son he's raising with his best friend, and he's successful. He's got everything—apart from love.
His new TV family should be just another job, but it's never that simple. Between skinned knees, Aiden and the kids, frog Armageddon, and sneaky trips away from the camera, he's fallen so hard he may have concussion.
Now he just has to convince Aiden that their secret romance is worth being in the spotlight.
This headline is the definition of ‘reaching’.

The ‘implications’ are apparently that Scotland, who is already hostile to the monarchy, will now be slightly more hostile and slightly more likely to want to consider independence.
But they already don’t like the monarchy and want independence sooooo….

Izzy is at that horrible but adorable gremlin stage
Turns out the deck in my back garden was a death trap, held together by inertia and rust. So I’m having to have that pulled out and redone, which is not easy with the aforesaid gremlin OR the angelic first born who wants nothing more than to tell the carpenter that he loves him.
UK Meet and GRL are NOT VERY FAR AWAY AT ALL and I am completely frazzled trying to get everything in order.
Anyhow, in the hopes of getting things back on track SOMEWHAT I am going to take the next few weeks wicked easy on the newsletter. Just some links, photos of my puppies at THEIR FINEST and all that. Plus any random tiktok I do :D

It’s warm for us! (This was at, like, seven in the morning).
I like Jack Monroe (for a parasocial level of like, I approve of their online persona and ideals). The fact that people hate them for…showing people how to make cheap but tasty food is bizarre to me (and NO, I don’t care if they have something nice or can afford to go places that they have budgeted for). So here’s one of their recipes that I will never get around to making, but maybe one of you lot will like it?!
#CostOfLivingCrisis low-energy recipe set is last nights dinner, coming in at a princely 45pence per person. You just need a single hob, a pan, and a quarter of an hour. Part of that, to be fair, is that I went away last week for a couple of days. I headed down to Belle Isle (I am not renting the castle, although if anyone wants to go halfsies with me at some point!) with the two pups to have a nice wee getaway.

Before you worry, the weather had broken and, besides, it wasn’t as hot here as it was on the mainland. Trust me you would have heard me complaining if it had gotten to 30 degrees here, never mind 40!!! We topped out at 26 in Newtownards, which was hot enough for the dogs! They got out early and then spent the rest of the day going from sunbeam to cool spot.
The hottest it was while I was away was a balmy 19 degrees.
I have booked my flights to UK Meet and GRL. So that’s a little…somewhere between nervewracking and exciting! :D

Must Read of the WeekI mean, sometimes I’ve been on a call with my friends and the next thing you know one of us mentions ‘goat cops’ and next thing you know what’s all over my facebook. TikTok is worse! I swear it mines my hindbrain anxieties for the FYP.
The Quiet Way Advertisers Are Tracking Your Browsing
Cookies are on the way out—but not enough is being done about browser fingerprinting. So what is it?
Creepy cookies that track all your online activity are (slowly) being eradicated. In recent years major web browsers, including Safari and Firefox, have restricted the practice. Even Chrome has realized that cookies present a privacy nightmare. But stopping them ends only one kind of online tracking—others are arguably worse.
Fingerprinting, which involves gathering detailed information about your browser’s or your phone’s settings, falls into this category. The tracking method is largely hidden, there’s not much you can do to stop it, and regulators have done little to limit how companies use it to follow you around the internet.
I used to read these AGGRESSIVELY. This, despite the cover’s fame, wasn’t one of my favs. I was all about the Mallorys (a pirate AND a rake in one family? Be still my heart) and the Ly-San-Ter clan.
